Airport Express disconnects randomly

My Airport Express disconnects me randomly, without any reason, and it even disappears for some time from the available networks. I was wondering if anyone had a fix for that.

I just wanted to echo the problem. I also have occasional disappearances of the AirPort Express, completely without reason. I'll be using the internet, or not...listening to music, or not...and poof, all signal bars are gone, no more connection between the computer and the AE. The LED on the AE stays green, indicating no problem.
I do a soft reset on the AE. Still not appearing. I shutdown, wait, and restart the computer. Nothing. I have to do a hard reset on the unit to get it to be "seen" by the computer again, and set up the AE and my wireless network from scratch. Annoying and frustrating.
This tends to happen about once or twice a week.
I guess it wouldn't bother me so much if I didn't have to re-enter all the Airport Express settings/passwords each and every time.
Any ideas?

  • Random Airport Express Disconnects

Hi, I don't kno if this has been posted are if any others of u have a problem w/ this. But i have my Airport Express set up w/ windows xp and for the most part it works fine. But occasionaly every few hours it'll randomly lose connection and reconnect. This is very annoying especially when in AIM conversations and in games. I was just wondering if anyone has an idea of why this is happening. Thanks!

    The article states:
"Direct Satellite Service (DSS) RF leakage: The coax cable that came with certain types of satellite dishes may cause interference. Obtain newer cables if you suspect RF leakage."
Could a coax cable running from a TV to the jack cause interference if it's about 3 inches above the AE?

  • My Airport Express Disconnect From the Cable Every Few Minutes

    Hello,
I have had an Airport Express for 3 years and it sometimes disconnects after a few minutes. Actually, it more looks like that the Airport crashes: the "PC Link" light on the cable modem goes off, the Airport lights go off and I cannot find my Airport Network any more on my computer.
When this happens, I can either unplug it from the power and plug it back in, or simply move the Airport around a little bit, and it will re-start. Sometimes the problem does not re-occur for a few hours or days, sometimes it keeps happening every few minutes and of course drives me crazy...
    Is it because ... :
    - ... my Airport has a faulty connection and I should replace it?
    - ... there are power surges in my electricity installation (eg this seems to happen when I or my neighbors have air conditioners on, I live in one of those old New York buildings), and I should get an anti-surge device, or a newer Airport would deal with this better?
    - ... of something else?
    Thanks for your help!

First, my mistake: I have an Airport Extreme base, not Express.
Second, I am sorry, I do not think it is interference.
I lose the connection to the CABLE, not the base, it's like the BASE crashes. How is that interference? It's not about the signal but about the connection to the cable. The cable MoDem does tell me that the connection is lost, as I said ("PC Link" does not blink anymore).
Finally, there is nothing in direct proximity of the Airport Extreme base that looks likely to do this: the computer and the base are 6ft apart, there is no microwave, no power line, no cordless phone, no bulletproof indow ...
    Any better idea, anyone?

  • Airport express disconnect

Although it used to workk seamlessly, the Airport Express keeps disconnecting after a little while.  This means that every time I want to stream, I have to reconnect, and then works perfectly, until I come back the next day and find it gone...
has anyone had the same problem?  any idea on how to fix it?  thank you in advance!

Is your AirPort Express Base Station (AX) the only wireless router in your current network configuration? That is, is it connected directly to the Internet modem and not to another router upstream of it?
Do you happen to live in an area with a high concentration of other Wi-Fi networks present, like in an apartment, condo, or dorm complex?
Finally, did you make any software/firmware updates recently that may be the origin of this new issue?

  • My airport express disconnects intermitently

    Hi all,
My airport express keeps disconnecting repeatedly. It's connected to a router via ethernet, using DHCP, and in bridge mode, to create a wireless network, has all the latest updates and it has been reset.
But still, all in a sudden, the light becomes orange and all connections are lost, the router indicates that it is not receiving signal at the wlan port.
And again all in a sudden the light turns green and the connections work out fine. But it is quite annoying as it keeps turning orange and green every 5-10 minutes.
It is not an internet problem as I have the router connected straight to a PC and it seems to be working fine.
    Any idea???
    Lots and lots of thanks,
    Vicky

    Welcome to the discussions!
Temporarily, can you connect a short ethernet cable to the Express and let it run for a few hours as a test to see if the connection drops continue?
If you have a stable connection, then look at the longer ethernet cable to be sure that it is functioning correctly. Often one of the very small contact points on one of the plugs does not make good electrical contact, or sometimes, there is an actual break in one of the small copper wires inside the cable itself.
I work with custom installers in my business and would estimate that at least half of all issues with a connection drop or intermittent signal can be traced to bad cabling or poor electrical connectors on the cables. This may not solve your issue, but it is the place to start with your investigation.
If the connection drops on the Express continue when you use another short ethernet cable, then the Express may have an issue.

  • Airport Express disconnects every 5mins (Client Mode)

    Hi all,
I recently bought an Airport Express (n) so I could stream music to my Hi-Fi and bridge my Xbox 360.
I have configured the AX to connect to my existing wireless network which is served up by a Billion 7800n router (G+N mode).
However, every 5 minutes it disconnects from the network, here are sample of the logs..

I'm using WPA2 AES encryption, wireless is on a non-competing channel and the airport is only 2-3 meters away from the router in the same room.
Things I've tried are upgrading Router firmware to latest (1.6), switching Wi-Fi channels, enabling B mode on the router (BGN) but nothing seems to work.
I don't think it's interference as it disconnects almost every 5 minutes which suggests some config/hardware issue.
Anyone have any ideas? I've hit a brick wall.
    Thanks...

    Update:
This appears to be by design? - connection doesn't drop when using AirTunes/Airfoil which is what I bought it for.
However I thought the Ethernet port wouldn't work when used in Client mode (according to the FAQ). I was able to connect my Xbox 360 to the AX when in Client mode using a network cable and it is able to connect to Xbox Live. When doing this it drops off on the 5 minute intervals when the AX disconnects and reconnects.
I guess if I used AirTunes at the same time as the X360 it would work.
Would be nice if it worked as a stable bridge in client mode as I could bin off my other wireless bridges. Never mind - I ain't forking out for another AX so I can use "Apple's" WDS.

  • Airport Express Connection Randomly Dropping Out

I've got a rather bizarre situation here. I'm using an AirPort Express with a 1.33 GHz PowerPC G4 laptop running on OS X 10.4.5. I've had it for slightly more than half a year, and it's always worked perfectly. Yesterday, without any apparent provocation of any kind, it randomly started malfunctioning. AirPort would find it and connect me to it, but then the AirPort menu icon (the four bars showing the strength of the connection) would randomly start flashing on and off at a very quick speed.
I've tried all of the different reset flavors (soft reset, factory default reset, and the one in between), and all of them have been equally ineffective. After one of the two more powerful resets, the signal will stay consistent for a couple of minutes and then begin to rapidly fade in and out again. I've tried to figure out if there are any new sources of interference in my room (going as far as to move the AE from the power strip with the other appliances to its own outlet across the room), but haven't been able to think of any. I haven't installed any new hardware for a couple of months, so I don't believe it's a hardware problem; the same goes for software. AirPort itself seems to be working fine, as does my ethernet cable; I really think that there's something going on with the AE itself. The bizarre thing is that even though the connection is rapidly flickering in and out, the unit's light remains a steady green all the way through.
If anyone has any insights or further questions about this predicament, please let me know.
    Many thanks,
    Matt

If you connection signal strength bars start "flashing" it appears as if the AE may be going bad.
Do you have any issues connecting to other wireless networks? If not, it appears as if it's your AE.
Sorry I don't have better news for you.

  • Airport Express disconnects from LAN overnight

I have set up a brand-new Airport Express (v. 7.6.4) recently. The AP Express is connected via the Ethernet 1 port to a Power Mac running OSX 10.9.5 (Mavericks). The AP Express is in "Join a wireless network" mode, and it connects to a LAN consisting of a cable modem/router, a "smart TV," a printer, and a MacBook.
Most of the time, all of this works fine, and the Power Mac gets a nice fast wireless Internet connection, which is the main objective of having an AP Express. (I'd rather use a direct Ethernet connection between the Mac and cable modem, but that would require snaking a long ugly cable thru my living room somehow.)
However, once or more per day, the AP Express gets disconnected from the host Mac (and the network) The symptom (sometimes) is that AirPort Utility reports that "no configured Airport base station has been found." Another symptom (sometimes) is that the AP Express is visible, but is reported to have a "self-assigned" IP address. It's SUPPOSED to be getting its IP address via DNS, and if it can't do so, no Internet connection...
This **seems** to happen when there is no traffic between the host Mac and the AP Express - most typically, overnight. I don't know of any "sleep" mode on the AirPort... ?
Sometimes, I can get the connection back up by tweaking a harmless parameter in AP Utility  and forcing it to "update" itself. In the worst case, I have to power down the AP Express and reconfigure the whole thing.
AFAICS, when this happens on the AP Express, the other devices are talking nicely to the cable modem.
At this point I'm at a total loss.... I thought that this would be a very simple installation, it's very disappointing to have to in effect "reinstall" the AP Express every morning...
    thx -- John

I phoned Apple Care and brought the AirPort to the Apple Store

  • Airport Express disconnects (via WLAN and ethernet)

    Hi guys,
I recently moved to another flat. After re-building my audio setup I did a upgrade to the firmware of my Airport Express.
Now it keeps disconnecting, after an hour or two. The stream from iTunes just stops. I first used the Wifi connection and later changed to ethernet, to make sure there is no issue about the wireless connection.
It is obviously not. The stream still stops after some time. If I try a restart iTunes keeps telling me the Airport would not be available.
The only possible solution is a reboot of the Airport (which ***** btw).
    Any suggestions?

    Hey guys.
In case this helps someone. I was having the exact same problem, and though I didn't find an answer, I did find a workaround.
I use my Airport Express to listen to my iTunes music on my Home Theater.
I tried installing different firmware versions, but that didn't work, so what I tried was to disable authentication on my wireless router. And the Airport Express stopped disconnecting.
What I did though, was to enable Mac Filtering on the router and disable SSID broadcasting so that it wouldn't be so "open" to the world.
So, I guess the Airport express is having some kind of issue with maintaining its connection to the wireless router when using WPA/WPA2 authentication.
I didn't try changing authentication to WEP, because frankly, WEP is not so secure, and as I don't get that many visitors that want to use my Internet Access while at home and as I don't mind fetching their Mac Address and putting it in the router if they needed it, this works perfectly for me.
The next time that a firmware update comes I'll try it again under the normal setup.
    Meanwhile, hope this helps
    Cheers

  • AirPort Express disconnects internet

I purchased an AirPort Express 2 days back for WiFi/Router and music streaming solution. I have Ethernet based Internet connection and a Cat6 with RJ45 crimpped is terminated on AirPort's WAN port. The Airport receives Public IP from ISP's DHCP server and does NATing of Local LAN.
From the moment I have replaced my old Router with connected Airport, my internet is intermittently getting disconnected. When I check with Airport utility, it shows the Public IP as router address but connection says disconnected. To make it work again, I go to Internet tab of Airport utility and renew the DHCP lease. Immediately it start working again.
What could be the problem behind this? I never faced this problem with my other router though. It was always connected day & night.

  • AirPort Express Disconnects

My AirPort Express is disconnecting after some time of usage... It disappears in AirPort Utility and internet connection is lost. This happens to both my & my sisters computers which are both MacBooks. The only solution I found to solve this is plugging it out, and back in mechanically. This way it's solved for some time but it gets disconnected again..
So, I would like to find some solution to fix it forever. Thank You.

    Hi, all -
I'm having the same problem, but may be able to add a few more clues:
I bought a new AirPort Express (version 7.3.2) over the holidays to stream music (only), and have successfully added it as a client to my existing wireless (WPA2) network. When I plug it in near my stereo, it eventually connects to the network and shows the solid green light, and is picked up by Airport Utility (version 5.3.2) on my IBM Thinkpad T42, and plays music from iTunes (version 8.0.2) to my stereo speakers just like I'd hoped.
At some point, however, the Airport Utility starts saying that it is now "unable to find any Apple wireless devices" - despite repeated rescans, and even though iTunes is still playing from my laptop through my stereo via the Airport Express. Eventually, though, perhaps an hour later, iTunes also can no longer connect to the remote speakers and the music stops. This despite the fact that the laptop has not moved (8 feet from AE), still has a strong connection to the wireless/Internet, and the Airport Express is still showing solid green, indicating that it's presumably still speaking to the network fine.
Rebooting the Airport Express, by unplugging it and plugging it back in, seems to resolve the issue every time - the computer can now see it again (in both Airport Untility and iTunes). But if i stop the music or it goes on too long, the same thing happens. It's rather annoying to have to reboot the Express anytime i want to use it!
Interestingly, my roommate has a brand new MacBook, and it's seeing the same thing - when my Thinkpad can see the Airport Express, so can the MacBook. But when the Thinkpad's Airport Utility doesn't see the AE, neither does the MacBook's (also version 5.3.2). This makes me think it has little to do with my computer or iTunes and seems to be something about the Airport Express itself... Any ideas???

  • Airport Express disconnects, blinking

I own an Airport Express. About once a week my wireless disconnects, Airport Utility will open, and then it shows a red, blinking 1. It doesn't matter whether I'm in my iPad or my MacBook. Sometimes it will reconnect in a few minutes, other times it takes longer. What is this? Is it updating? If so, does it really need to update every week? Can I schedule it to update when I'm off my devices? I'm an online student so having it cut out like this is a bit of a problem. Any advice appreciated. Thank you.

I suggest performing a "factory default" reset on your AirPort Express. Note: You may have to do this a few times to make it "stick." If the base station continues to provide the same status light indications, either the status light LED is bad or the unit is faulty.

  • Airport Express disconnects wired internet connection when attempting to extend Airport Extreme WiFi network

I just purchased and airport express to extend my wifi network.  My base station is an airport extreme, I have one wired connection and a wifi network.  When I go through the recommended steps to set up the express and "extend the network", the airport extreme will no longer connect to the internet via ethernet.  I have tried various settings and can't seem to resolve the problem.  Any assistance would be much appreciated.

Ok so we now have a solution to the problem.   A friend of mine came round to work this out with me last night and we were able to get it working, but it is not as easy as I had hoped.  Fisrtly we plugged the airport express into my router using the ethernet cable  (for this I am using an Airport Express Base Station") and in airport utilities selected the airport express.  In edit, we then gave the airport express a new range of IP address which did not conflict with any of the other applications that I have already assigned.  We also named the Airport Express with a distinguishable name.  We then waited for the changes to be registered then unplugged the Airport Express from the router.  I then plugged my AppleTV via HDMI into a tv to test it and selected the new wifi network with the new Airport Express distinguishable name.  I was able to watch a video that I have on my ipad directly on my tv without being connected to the internet, and was able to play Airplay presentations.
No the easiest solution, and certainly not something that anyone at Apple has talked me through in my lengthy conversations with them at Applecare.
    Hope this helps.

  • Encrypting my airport express disconnects my airport expresses

I finally got around to setting up encryption on my airport extreme. Now my two airport expresses won't show up. I've tried all four of the encryption methods, but the only way the AEs show up is to turn off encryption. What am I doing wrong? How do I fix this? I'd obviously like to have my wireless network encrypted.
    Thanks,
    David

I'm not sure if you have your AirPort Express devcies configured to "join" or "extend" a wireless network, but in any case if you have security enabled on your "main" router, you will need to reconfigure each of the AirPort Express devices to "join" or "exend" using the same wireless network name, same security setting, and same password as your "main" router.
When making a change like this, I would suggest that you "hard reset" each Express to clear out the current settings and then reconfigure the device again with new settings.
To "hard reset" the Express, make sure the device has been powered up for 60+ seconds, and then hold in the reset button for 10-12 seconds. Release the reset button and the Express will restart. After 40-45 seconds, you should see a slow blinking amber light, which indicates that the Express is ready to be reconfigured with your new settings.

  • Airport Express disconnects non-Macs

My Airport Express network has been working flawlessly for my MacBook Pro, including Airplay. However, my work PC and Android phone both experience frequent loss of internet. During this time, they both register still being connected to the network, but have no access to webpages or VPNs.
I read a suggestion to change my security type to TKIP rather than AES, so I set up the guest network with WPA/WPA2 TKIP and the issue has persisted. Any thoughts out there?

I just wanted to echo the problem. I also have occasional disappearances of the AirPort Express, completely without reason.
