Airport express does not appear in Airport Utility

Hello,
I am having problems connecting my Airport Express to my network.
My configuration is all Apple. I am attempting to set up Airtunes. I have an Airport Extreme (software version 5.7) plus Airport Express. The Airport Extreme is hardwired to my Power Mac G5 (10.5.6) via ethernet. Wireless security is WEP 128 bit.
The Airport Express appears to establish a connection with no problems. The indicator light on the Express goes through normal start up and then a steady solid green.
Airport Utility shows the Airport Extreme but the Airport Express is not listed.
Any suggestions on how to make the connection are appreciated!
Thank you!

When having difficulties accessing the AirPort thru the AirPort Utility, try the following, in order checking accessibility with the AirPort Utility after each step:
o Check the local connection. If you are trying to access the AirPort wirelessly, make sure that you are connected to its wireless network before running the AirPort Utility to administer it. If you are still unable to access it with the utility, temporarily connect your computer directly using an Ethernet cable to one of the base station's LAN ports.
o Power cycle the base station. Remove the power adapter's plug from the power outlet, and then, wait 15 seconds before plugging it back in.
o Perform a "factory default" (AirPort Express) or "hard" (AirPort Extreme / Time Capsule) reset.

  • Airport extreme does not appear in airport utility and will not reset

    Hi,
Here's the problem: My base station wasn't letting me reconfigure its settings via ethernet or airport. I unplugged all cables and performed a hard reset. Now, it will not appear in airport utility either on ethernet or wireless, and it will not revert to the factory 'Apple Network #######' broadcast. It is still showing the name of the previous network in my computer's airport settings. Also, running iStumbler, it too does not see a new network.
Question: Is it fried? If not, what should I do?
    Thanks.

I'm may be having the same problem:
Airport Utility doesn't find the base station, despite being connected with ethernet and even now while I'm actually connected to the internet through it via Airport. In my first experience, I reset the base station, and then it did show up, though, as you said, not reset to factory defaults. On another occasion, it wasn't showing up again, but did the next morning when I sat down. Weird. This is on an Alum. PB 15" running Tiger (10.4.11). I also just got an Oct 08 MBPro with 10.5.5 and it's copy of Airport Utility is finding the base station right now while this machine is not. Is this some kind of bug? Both copies of Airport Utility are 5.3.2 (532.8)

  • Apple express does not appear in airport utility

I have an airport base station (extreme) that is already set up and working fine. However, we needed to extend it's range to a separate guest house so I purchased an Apple Express. When I initially attempted to set it up - I launched the Airport Utility window - it appeared and walked me through the set up. However, it now doesn't appear in the Airport utility window, nor is it functioning (not showing up on any of our computers).  I attempted a reset several times but it no longer appears in the Airport Utility window. Any suggestions or ideas about what the problem is? Thanks.

Which version of AirPort Utility are you asking about here?
If you are not sure, open AirPort Utility and click on the AirPort Utility menu at the upper left corner of the screen.
Click About AirPort Utility and post back with that info.
In the meantime, move the the Express to the same room as the AirPort Extreme
Power up the Express and let it run a minute
Hold in the reset button for 9-10 seconds on the back of the  Express and let it restart

  • Airport Express does not respond to Airport Utility

I use 2 Airport Express units as printer servers.  I recently changed routers, and both started flashing yellow.  I reset both and reconfigured using airport admin.  The first is now working(I can print wirelessly from my mac laptop) . For the second I got a message after the reconfiguration that Airport admin had lost contact with it.  I cannot bring it up using reset or ethernet.  It flashes yellow soon after each reset.
While I was joining the forum and typing this it came back onto the screen as unconfigured.  I  reconfigured and get the same message:Airpport Utility was unable to find your wireless device after restarting. The device has been successfully updated, but there is a problem rejoining the wirless network.  The AE is flashing yellow again. Any suggestions would be welcome.

The device has been successfully updated, but there is a problem rejoining the wirless network.
This is a famous "error" message that in effect says that the Express stored the settings that it received, but these may not have been the settings that it needed to join the network successfully.
Or, there were some other settings that were still stored on the Express, and the new settings are in conflict with the old settings.
My suggestion would be to first perform a Factory Default Reset on the Express and then try to reconfigure it again.
To perform a Factory Defaut Reset......
Power off the AirPort Express for a few minutes
Hold in the reset button on the Express and then keep holding it in for an additional 10 seconds while you simultaneously plug the Express back in to power
Release the reset button after the hold period and allow a full minute for the Express to restart to a slow, blinking amber light
    Now try the configuration again.

  • Time Capsule does not appear in AirPort Utility after Yosemite upgrade

Just upgraded to Yosemite and the Time Capsule appears as a shared device in Finder, but does not appear in AirPort Utility.  Any solution to this so I can manage my Time Capsule again?

I'm having the same problem. Did you reset your Time Capsule to factory settings or simply restart it?

    Contact HP for support.
Explain that you are using a Mac, anticipate the inevitable groan, and wait patiently for their resident Mac expert to return from vacation.
Until then download and install its driver here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?product=5058338&cc=us&dlc=en &lc=en
Otherwise return the printer and purchase one from a company that visibly supports OS X. HP isn't on that list.

  • Hi, The Airport Express does not work with iOS 7.0.4, I appreciate your help to resolve this event. Thank you,

Hi, The Airport Express does not work with iOS 7.0.4, I appreciate your help to resolve this event. Thank you,

Please locate the model number of the AirPort Express and post back that information.
The model number is located on the side of the AirPort Express. It begins with an "A" followed by four numbers.
We are not sure what you mean by "does not work".  Does this mean that the AirPort Express worked at one time and has just recently stopped working?
Have you installed a newer operating system on your iOS device recently?
Or, is this a new AirPort Express that you are trying to configure for the first time?
If yes, what service will the AirPort Express perform on your network?
Please remember that we cannot see your network, so we only know as much about your problem as you can tell us.

  • HT4259 I have my airport extreme plugged in within range but the device does NOT appear in airport utility (on the left).  Please advise.

To extend wifi range, I plugged in my airport extreme within exisitng range but the device does not appear in my airport utility (on the left of the screen).  The airport extreme is blinking amber.  Please advise. Thank you.

The AirPort Extreme can extend the signal from another Apple router wirelessly, so as long as you have a 802.11n version of the products, the extend function should work.
Please check to locate the Model No of both of your AirPort routers. It will be on the bottom of the device. Starts with an "A" followed by four numbers, as in "A x x x x".
    Post back with that info.
We also need to know the version of AirPort Utility that you are using. If you are not sure, click the AirPort Utility menu in the upper left corner of the screen, then click About AirPort Utility and post back with tht info as well.

  • Airport Express does not see SSID.

Odd problem.  I am trying to configure an Airport Express to stream music.  I am using a D-Link DGL-4500 wireless router on a mixed 802.11n and 802.11g network.  SSID is set to broadcast.  Security is WPA2-Personal.  Network has worked fine for years, and every device I have tried has connected fine.
I plug in my Airport Express and bring up the Airport Utility.  When I start the configuration, I do not see my network's SSID in the list of available networks.  I can see my neighbors' SSIDs, but not mine.  If I manually enter the SSID, and complete the configuration, the Airport Extreme will not connect to my network (only blinking amber light).  I've checked the router logs for the Airport Extreme's MAC, to try to determine if there was a connection attempt, but I see nothing.
I've done a factory reset and tried several times to configure the device, but it never connects.  More strangely, it does not appear to even try to connect.  I'm pretty much at the end of my rope.  Any ideas before I send it back?
    Thanks!

Your express will need to see the SSID in order to connect. I would suggest that you temporarily turn off the security (WPA2) on your D-Link router, make sure it is broadcasting the SSID, and then see if the express detects it. If the express doesn't see it, make sure some other device can.
You also might try changing the SSID, or turning it off and back on and see if that helps.
Once you can see it in the clear, add the security, and be sure to enter it in exactly, be careful of capitals, etc.

  • Help Needed: Airport Express does not work

My Airport Express was ok until one day I setup it under bridge mode in a hotel room. Now neither my iMac and Dell laptop can update the settings in the Airport Express. It always shows error in reading the settings.
I have tried soft, hard reset and also tried to bring it back to factory settings. However, all these trials were not successful. It did not even blink with green light when I tried to reset it to factory settings (hold the reset pin, plug in power socket and then release the pin... I believe I did it right).
Also the network name I created in this Airport Express did not change to default name. The Airport Express name was restored to default though.
Does anyone know how to fix this? Do I have to send the hardware to Apple to fix it or it is just a software failure that I can fix at home with you guys help?
    Thanks!

Same problem here -- followed instructions to do factory reset to a "T", never saw blinking green LED. Instead led blinks yellow. Always get an error in Airport Utility.
Apple had best quit poking fun at how lousy Microsoft stuff is before someone sees the large number of product complaints logged in the forums. It isn't smart to toss stones in a glass house.

  • I just purchased a wireless connection for my Tivo but the signal strength from my airport express does not allow the tivo to load data. How do I increase the signal strength?

I just purchased a wireless N network adapter for the TIVO premier and am trying to use my apple airport express to connectand it  is in the another room. I am only receiving one  bar of strength on my network adapter. How can I raise the signal strength of my airport express.

There are several things that might help, not all of which would be feasible depending on your situation:  (1) Move the TiVo unit and AirPort Express closer together.  (2) Use another AirPort Express to "extend" the network of the first AirPort Express.  Put the second AirPort Express half way between the first AirPort Express and the TiVo unit.  (3) In the general case, Power-Line equipment might allow the TiVo unit to get a good signal, but it's likely that the Ethernet port of your AirPort Express is probably connected to your broadband modem, so that solution wouldn't work for you.  (4) Changing the band or channel that the AirPort Express is using might help.  If the TiVo unit is connection on the 5 GHz band, try one of the three-digit channels, which are allowed to use higher power.

  • HT1238 ipod shuffle 2nd generation does not appear in Reset Utility window.

Hi there! I'm seeking some advice for repairing an old ipod shuffle.
My mom's 2nd generation iPod shuffle suddenly will not appear on her computer. She is using windows vista (sad face). I ran all the reccommeded troubleshooting suggestions, but still can't repair the disk.
When connected to the original computer (windows vista), the charging light comes on but the disk does not appear anywhere on the computer. I ran the diagnostics and it apparently has the most updated software, but there is another unspecified error.
When I tried to run the repair suggestions on my own computer, i can't get the disk to show anywhere....the charging light will not even come on.
Any other suggestions I might have overlooked?

but there is another unspecified error.
    What is that error?
Are you sure she has a Shuffle? You mentioned a Sad Face.. that would indicate that the iPod has a display, which a Shuffle does not.

  • New Airport Express is not discoverable by Airport Utility

    Hello,
After searching the forums for a while and not finding any posts that really address the issue I'm having, I've finally decided to create my own post.
I received a brand new Airport Express from my girlfriend for Christmas. I've finally gotten some time to set it up, but I seem to be having some issues with Airport Utility even seeing it. I haven't even been able to set it up because I can't access it. Airport Utility simply says that it cannot find any Apple Wireless devices and continuously asks me to rescan.
The first time I plugged in the Airport Express, it flashed the green light once like it's supposed to, then the light turned to solid amber for a couple of minutes, then started blinking. It still does this even after I do a factory reset.
Very rarely Airport Utility will see it, but it takes a lot of rescans before it finally does. When Airport Utility does finally see it after several rescans, I enter manual setup, enter my information and click Update. After I click update, I'm no longer able to connect to the Airport Express at all until I do a factory reset. Then it takes a lot of patience and several more rescans until I can finally connect again.
I first placed it directly below my desk, but have since tried many other locations throughout the house to see if it was location that was the problem. That is not the issue.
The intention is to have it join my current wireless network, so I do not have an ethernet cable plugged into it. I've tried plugging one in, but with the exact same results (Airport Utility still can't see it).
Any ideas as to what may be the problem?
    Thank you!

If AirPort Utility is still having trouble "seeing" the Airport Express (AX), temporarily connect an ethernet cable from your computer to the AX. You may need to move the AX close to your computer for this and restart both your computer and the AX.
Once you have the AX configured, you can move it back to the desired location.
So I am able to connect to the Airport Express via an ethernet cable and configure it like that, but I am still unable to connect to it wirelessly. I wonder if there could be something wrong with the unit itself? After configuring it, I can't even see it in the Airport menu on the menu bar on top.
    Any other suggestions?

  • Airport icon does not appear

The "About this Mac" dialogue in my Mac Pro shows I have Airport Utility 5.5.3. BUT, I go to System Preferences - Network to select "Show Airport Status In Menu Bar" and there is no Airport icon. I click the + to add it and it does not show up as a selection. All I get is Firewire, Ethernet 1 and 2 and Bluetooth.
My Airport Extreme DOES show up in the Airport Utility box when I click on Airport Utility but I can not set it up as a wireless connection. I have the Extreme hard-wired to the Mac Pro. I also have a Mac Mini and I had no problem installing that computer as a wireless connection.
The problem appears to be that the Airport Utility for some reason, is not showing up under System Preferences - Network. Instead, it is being used as an Ethernet connection.
When I bought the Extreme, I asked Apple for help. They refused to give me any help with the Mac Pro because it is "out of warranty" even though I think this is NOT a Mac Pro issues per se but it is an issue with the Airport Extreme that IS under warranty. I will not pay for support because I do not at all believe that a company should charge to support their products. Charging for support is just wrong.
    Any help would be great.

Make sure that the drive is formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) to work correctly with the AirPort Extreme. Unless you purchased a drive that was specifically formatted for Macs, the drive is likely pre-formatted for use with PCs.
Use Disk Utility in your Utilities folder under Applications to format the drive if needed.
Often, it helps to use a powered USB hub with a drive...even if the drive has its own power supply....since the USB port on the Extreme is borderline as far as its power capabilities.

  • Airport Express does not show up under 10.3.9 - but shows up under 10.4.9

    Hi
my Room Mate uses an PowerBook with 10.3.9 and was able to use his Airport Express before without any problem.
Without any reason the Airport disappeared from the options in his list in the taskbar, also looking for preferred networks does not show the station.
    BUT
if I start my PowerBook - running 10.4.9 - with the latest Utility Program that came with my Airport Extreme BaseStation - I have no problems to identify, configure and connect to the Express Station!
Why is my Room Mate unable to get the Airport Express on his Mac?

    Max,
As I read it below, you both have separate internet sources and basically two separate wireless systems. He uses the Airport Express as a base station for his system and you use an Airport Extreme 802.11n for your base station.
You said he used to be able to access the system but now he can't. What changes to the system were made during that period of time.
Under these circumstances what I think I would try is for him to open up the old Airport Admin Utility, factory reset his Express, and then try to reconfigure it to build his own wifi system with the old Airport Admin Utility. Once he factory resets it goes back to the factory id and loses all memory of any system it may have been tied to.
I'd call the new system a different name than the old system and if he uses security use a different password than the first one.
The thing I don't understand below, if he has his own separate system, I don't understand how you can see and edit his settings because he's not part of your system. However, since you have to be using 10.4.8 or later for the new 802.11n Extreme and it looks like you tried configuring his system with the new Utility and he's running 10.3.9 - that may have something to do with it.
Beyond this, it's out of my knowledge base.
