Airport express dropping internet while streaming from computer

In the last week or so, everytime I try to stream video from my PC to my apple TV (2nd gen), my airport express (only router in my house) drops the internet connection.  I thought at first it was my ISP,  it then noticed it happened only when I was streaming movies from my PC ( have tried it with two different computers and same result). As soon as I stop streaming my internet kicks back in.  I've restarted and reset both my Apple TV and airport express back to factory settings and still get the same result.  In addition, the same problem occurs when i try to stream videos from my PC to my iPads or iPhone via the shared library.  Curious if anyone has encountered this problem before and if it is a firmware problem and not a hardware problem.
SIdenote: Airplay in general has been unstable as well so I'm assuming the two problems are linked.

And your reminder of the channels got it fixed. Being out in the country my internet is provided wirelessly (WISP) and  I remembered after your comment that  the tech who installed our receiver dish said that the internet is being broadcast on the 2.5 ghz band on channel 7 and if any issues arise change the channel to a lower number.   Never had an issue till now and updated the channel to 1 and back in business. A big thanks.

  • Airport Express dropping internet?

    G'day all.
I've been having a long term problem with the internet dropping out while my computer is shut down. I have AT&T DSL with the Motorola modem they provided linked by eithernet cable to my Airport Express 802.11n. I have two IbookG4s and a Windows computer on the network. When the problem occurs I unplug the motorola modem from its power supply and then plug it back in. Then I see the message at the top of my screen saying "Looking for PPPoE host..." that can go on for 1 minute or an hour. Once it finds what it's looking for the internet works fine. And that can last from a few hours to over a day. Then the usual pattern is you come home or back to the computer and the internet is gone. I went through troubleshooting with AT&T and they say the modem is good, phone line is good, and check that I have the filter on the phone jack. The Airport always has a green light and I don't have to unplug it to re-establish the internet connection. Just the modem.
My suspicion is that I don't have some setting right. If not in the airport utility settings for the network then in the motorola dsl modem set up. Such as PPP location; should it be on the modem or on the computer?
    Thanks,
    Hugh

For most consumer-grade Internet service, your ISP does provide you with a dynamic Public IP address from a limited pool of addresses that they have been given. They, in turn use DHCP to provide these addresses to each of their subscribers.
As I mentioned earlier, ISPs that provide DSL service typically require PPPoE to authenticate the user before their DHCP server will issue one of these Public IP addresses. That's really the only difference between the two.
PPPoE, in turn, sends your user credentials (username & password) securely to their authentication server. Once verified, they send the IP address via DHCP.
Both the AirPort routers & computers are DHCP clients by default. That means, they will attempt to locate a DHCP server, and if successful, will make a request for the IP address. The AirPort routers are also DHCP servers and provide local network clients with their Private IP addresses. By default, the AirPort's DHCP server provides these addresses on a 24 hour lease. ISPs typically provide a dynamic Public IP address for several days ... so just powering off your computer shouldn't cause it to "lose" its address every time it does.

  • Airport Express fails to be streamed from by iTunes

So when I use the Airport Utility (v.5.4.2) to configure an airport express (v.6.3) everything's fine. It can join my WPA network and is visible in iTunes (v.9.0.3).
But as soon as I try to connect:
An unknown error (-15006) ocurred while connecting to the remote speaker <blah>
The annoying aspect is using Airfoil and other apps (e.g. Spotify) I can stream perfectly, but as soon as iTunes attempts to connect, I see the error and need to cut power and restart it to make it visible again.
iTunes can't eat its own dogfood, but Airfoil can?
The firewall is disabled, if that's your first suggestion!

First of all, I feel your frustration...
Second, you cannot install Airport Express on any device...
You can only install "Airport Utility" on devices......
Third, your profile shows you have a Black Macbook running 10.5.5
    Is this correct??????????????
A little more info and updated information will help all of us.........

  • Airport Express dropping out constantly so I can't print wirelessly

I have an iMacG5 running OSX 10.3.9. I have a DLink wireless router which creates my wireless network that the iMac connects to. Also, as my printer as at the other end of the room, I have an airport express connected via USB to the printer so I can print wirelessly. Everything worked like a dream for about 12 months. Until recently I had no security on this network and although I was aware this was risky, I was reluctant to change anything because it all worked so well. But my paranoia got the better of me and I changed the DLink to WPA security. Ever since then, the airport express has acted very strangely. The connection dropped and I was required to do a hard reset. I did that and everything worked. I felt so smug that I had worked out a computer issue! Little did I know that as soon as I shut down the system the airport express dropped out again. I have since discovered that I don't actually need to shut down for the thing to drop out. It just does it of its own accord.
I have contacted AppleCare 3 times and spent a total of about 4 hours on this to date. No luck. They suggested interference. However my airport icon usually shows either 3 or 4 bars and there is no difference when the thing drops out.
The only thing I have learned is that Airport Express does not have to be reset all the time. In my situation, it is best to just unplug it, let it rest for about 30 seconds and then you should be able to see the thing in the airport admin utility. It does take a while and several rescans in the utility, but eventually it does show up. This at least means I don't have to constantly set it up to join the network.
In fact, really it is a doddle to print! I don't know why people like to just go File-Print when you can go through the delight of getting out of your chair, unplugging Airport Express, waiting 30 seconds, looking at the dust under the cupboard thinking I really must get that, plugging the airport express back in, watching the light change from green to amber, to flashing amber, wait for it...wait for it...it's not happening....waiting...finally - green!. Back to the computer, go to Finder - Applications - Utilities - Airport Admin Utility, not showing up, rescan, not there, rescan, rescan, rescan, still not there, rescan, oh good, airport express is showing up. Now, go to Printer setup utility, delete the printer that is there, then add printer, select rendezvous, add my hp, OK......now I can hit File - Print.
Has anyone got any ideas on how I can join the boring legions of people who are oblivious to the joys of printing my way?

  • Airport Express drops connections

I recently bought an airport express to use for streaming music. I set it up to join my existing wireless network using DHCP to get an IP address. It works fine for a few minutes to a few hours. Then it drops the connection to the existing wireless network. Streaming doesn't work and I can't ping it. The status light remains green and I am unable to connect to it using airport utility. If I unplug it and plug it back in, it reboots and then works ok for a while. If I connect to the Airport Express using the ethernet port it reboots and then works fine for a while. The behavior has been consistent for 3 days.
My existing wireless network consists of two access points. One is part of the router that Verizon provided with my fios connection and is an Actiontec and is running in mixed b and g modes uing WPA. The other access point is a Linksys WAP54G with a wired ethernet connection to the router. Both access points use the same SSID. (I have two access points to provide adequate signal strenght throughout the entire house.)
    Any suggestions?
    Tom

Hi, I recently swapped an old N 450 Router to Apple Extreme (5Gen). Initially the signal was very strong and even in first floor Smart TV Netflix loading was almost instantaneous. I have a 50mbps Xfinity Blast. All nice and felt that it was such a good move and justified the cost of the router too. After 2 days, started noticing connection drop outs, IP address conflicts, unable to connect, wifi was connected but no internet. Power recycled it and things seemed okay. again after 2 days, the internet was very slow, dog slow infact to load up regular websites and pages. This time through it was something with the Xfinity modem (Motorola SB6121) which never in 2 years had given me any issues, but recycled it, seems to be marginally better, but the speed ( not the wifi signal) remained very slow. I am a IT person, not specifically Networking, but quite good with systems, configurations etc. Finally eating up my pride called the Apple Support. The guy who responded seemed knowledgeable. He asked me to walk through the set up process, which I said, I have already done it.He asked me how did I set the router up. I had used an iPad with the Apple Utility and since there about 15 devices connected through out the house, I had used the same SSIDs one for 5Ghz and another for 2.4 Ghz. Apparently using the same SSID leads to deterioration in both connectivity and signal strength. I have never heard of this as I have swapped out routers in past 12 years using same SSIDs without any issues. The Support guy told me that this is only with Apple Routers and not with other brands. I have never heard any such thing and trying to google did not get me much information on this. I reached this forum as result. I need answers desperately so that I can decide to return or keep the router. Thanks

  • Using Airport Express as internet connection for one Mac and one PC

Will probably be judged a complete dork for this question. I have successfully set up my Imac G5 to run an internet connection through an Airport express. My partner runs a PC (Windows XP) and I want to connect this too. Have installed a USB wireless card on the PC, and installed Airport Utility, but it just won't find the Airport Express - it will however find the Imac with something like 96% signal strength. So I set up a network on the Mac and have successfully linked into it with the PC, but it soon comes up with a connectivity problem that will not allow internet browsing. So two questions - can I connect two computers to the Airport Express at once for internet browsing, or do I have to do it through linking the PC to a wireless network? If the latter is the route - any ideas on what the connectivity issue will be? Help!

No, not if the AirPort Express "joins" the wireless network.
No, I do not want to join a network.
It is possible to have the AirPort Express "create" a separate wireless network that would not have access to the Internet, but if you did this, you would need to log off of your normal network....(losing your Internet connection) and then log onto the AirPort Express network when you wanted to listen to AirPlay.
Then, when you wanted to have Internet access, you would have to log off of the AirPort Express network and log back onto your normal wireless network.
Ok, I understand that it is not possible to use airport express only for sound streaming while having an Internet connection at the same time. Airport express does need to join a network if I want sound streaming next an Internet connection. I wanted airport express not to get into way of my Internet connection because in this case the sound streaming messes up sometimes. When I configure airport express only as a sound output, the problems I encounter fade away but then I cannot access to the Internet. Anyhow thanks a lot for the answer.

  • √using successfully airport express for internet/ when hooking up new airport extreme light glows green, but does NOT appear in devices seen????airport wifi devices

using sucessfully airport express for internet
when hooking up new airport extreme light glows green, but does NOT appear in devices sesn in 5.6 airport wifi devices
wanting to use extreme at base and express in another part of the house

How is the express getting internet? What modem is it plugged into?
How is the extreme setup? New extreme cannot be setup with 5.6 utility.. you must use latest 6.3. Which also means you cannot setup from computer using less than Lion .. or you must use iOS with latest utility but it has limited configuration cf the computer version.
IPv6 is also needed.. turn on local link.

  • AirPort Express Choking Internet Access?

My AirPort Express is running the 7.5.2 update and is plugged into my Comcast modem.
I keep having download/upload speeds dropping way below what I should be getting. Speedtest.net keeps showing download speeds of around 5mbps or less on average but I should be getting around 15mbps.
I've tried troubleshooting with Comcast with no improvements. I suspect it's network congestion but they just won't admit it because I've done speed tests on a weekday during business hours and it works great. But in the evenings/weekends it's poor.
The AirPort Express is directly below my desktop computer so I doubt there's enough interference to cause this slowdown.
I've set the radio signal in the AX to 802.11n 5mhz only thinking that would help.
The AX is about 3 years old. Does it just need replacing?
Would appreciate any suggestions for how to change settings, etc., that might eliminate this problem.

Speedtest.net keeps showing download speeds of around 5mbps or less on average but I should be getting around 15mbps
You are connecting to an optimized server when you do this. All this number tells you is what speed you are connecting at to that particular dedicated server which performs no other functions such as transferring a normal amount of data that would usually be present during a normal Internet connection.
Your actual connection speed will vary quite a bit depending on what site you are visiting, how many users are on the site, and many other things, including congestion on your providers service (which they will never admit).
I've done speed tests on a weekday during business hours and it works great. But in the evenings/weekends it's poor.
You pretty much have your answer already.
I've set the radio signal in the AX to 802.11n 5mhz only thinking that would help.
It won't help your internet connection speed since that is controlled by your provider. Your AX is capable of much higher speeds that the ISP can ever provide. If you are using 5 GHz, these signals are much weaker than 2.4 GHz signals, so you really need close to a line-of-sight relationship between the AirPort Express and your computer using 5 GHz. Since your AX is close to the computer this may not affect things that much, but if you were a few rooms away, you would see that the 5 GHz signal was much weaker than the 2.4 GHz signal.
The main advantage of using 5 GHz is that you avoid other networks using the congested 2.4 GHz Channels.

  • Why cant i print from my ipad using airport express but i can print from my mac using the express

why cant i print from my ipad using airport express but i can print from my mac using the express

Because your printer has to be Airprint compatible and connected to WiFi. There are applications, such as Printopia, that will allow you to print through your computer.

  • Airport Express connected but keeps disappearing from itunes

    HI,
I have an airport express which is connected to some speakers and I'm using Airplay to stream music from Itunes to the speakers.
However the speakers keep disappearing from itunes.  If I reboot the Airport Express they reappear, then have a few hours will disappear again!
In all cases I can connect to the Airport using the configuration utility and I can ping the device, so I don't think it's a problem with the Wifi, just with Airplay.  Also the Airport express is only 4 meters from the Access Point.
I have two windows 7 machines, both using itunes (latest version) and a MAC - all machines have the same difficulty with the speakers intermittently disappearing.
Also on the network I have 2 x TVs and a Bowers and Wilkins Zeppelin - all working fine with Airplay.
The Airport Express is on version 7.5.2 and is using a static IP address.
    Any Thoughts anyone?

Did you disconnect the cable modem's power supply before re-connecting it and then attaching the AirPort Express device? Be sure to pull the power spike—don't just use an on/off switch.
On some older cable modems, it's necessary to leave the power cable unplugged for up to 12 hours or so.

  • Why won't my airport express allow internet connection on TV blu ray? I have internet connection on iMac

Why won't my Airport Express allow internet connection on my Blu Ray when there is internet connection on my IMac?

I'm guessing you only have the modem/router supplied by your isp and the Airport Express.  Is the Airport Express connected to the modem/router with an ethernet cable?  If not, plug one end of the cable into an available port on the modem/router and the other end in to the WAN port, indicated with a dashed circle, on the Airport Express.
    Have a nice day.

  • Movie streaming from computer not working after 6.0 upgrade

After the ATV 6.0 upgrade, video streaming from computer stopped working.
I'm trying to watch a movie from my computer and ATV is just sitting and buffering.
If I try and watch a preview from the video rental, it is just buffering as well.
    iTunes radio is not loading.
I have the latest update of iTunes.
Regular mirroring works fine and music from the MacBook computer is working fine.
Everything worked fine before the 6.0 upgrade.

I have an RM-507 N97 as well, upgraded to v20 firmware and with the GPS antenna factory fix.
It appears that the firmware upgrade changes something between the MAPS app, the MAP data and the GPS drivers which causes this issue.
Recommended course of action is to delete and reinstall map data using PC Suite or Ovi Suite.
ps. There is another apparent problem that can cause lack of GPS fix which is currently under investigation.  If your N97 is "hot" (i.e. just after charging or long periods of continuous display activity), you may have problems getting a GPS fix.  Also, if you run the MAPS app for a long period of time with display active, you may see loss of fix problems.

  • Airport Express for Airplay Audio Stream while still using iPhone's 3G/4G Internet?

I'd like to use an Airport Express to stream music from my iphone via Airplay (AMP > Analog RCA's > Minijack Splitter > Airport Express). Here's the rub: I wont have an internet connection where this setup is located at.
Basic networking would make it impossible to get online with thise becaue the iphone would be looking at the Airport as the default gate.
I understand that you can setup the network on your phone to be a static IP, subnet, and leave the default gateway blank. This should allow the phone to see the Airport/Airplay and still utilize the 3G/LTE of the AT&T service. Can anyone confirm this?  UPDATED, THIS PIECE WORKS LIKE A CHARM.
If that works, that's great, I could stop there, but I'd like to take it a step further to make it easier to use by someone other than a network engineer. Can you set the DHCP server on the Express to give out a Blank default gateway, or will you need to configure the network on each device you connect to it?
The last piece isn't a deal killer for me, but it would make it super easy to use for others.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks!

Hello TKSF78. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
I want to use my Airport Express to stream my music to my stereo so I can listen to music while still using the WIFI connection for internet.
In order to do both simultaneously, you just need to reconfigure the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) to join the wireless network created by the other router.
The following is the basic settings to do so:
AirPort Utility > Manual Setup > AirPort > Wireless
o Wireless Mode: Join a wireless network
o Wireless Network Name: <enter the Network Name or SSID of the wireless network that you want your AX to join>
o Wireless Security: <select the appropriate security type>
o Wireless Password: <enter the appropriate wireless security password>
AirPort Utility > Manual Setup > Music
    o Enable AirTunes (checked)

  • Using 2 Airport Express stations - internet on one, stream to the other?

This has to be possible but I'm unable to find any documentation about it....
    Summary:
I have 2 Airport Express base stations. One is downstairs with my cable modem and stereo - downstairs. The other is upstairs connected only to a stereo - upstairs. Is it possible to be connected to one Airport Express (downstairs) with my system and a different Airport Express (upstairs) with iTunes?
    Details:
Right now, I have to disconnect from downstairs - losing my internet connection - just so I can select upstairs in iTunes and stream music upstairs. Eventually when I want to check my email, or access the internet, I have to kill my streaming music going upstairs and connect back to downstairs. I thought for some reason that both downstairs and upstairs would appear in the drop-down in iTunes regardless of what network I'm connected to with my system. But it is now obvious that it just shows only the network I'm already connected to in the drop-down.
It's frustrating that I can't be connected to both in some way. Is this even possible?

Initially, I'm gonna say, "Yes." I've got a dual-band setup. I've got a AEBS (g-only) with two APEX (g-only) and an AEBS (5 GHz n-only). I can use AirTunes to stream music to both APEXs and my Apple TV.
So, if I understand your setup, Upstairs is only connected to a stereo and Downstairs is connected to your cable modem and a stereo. And your iTunes is either wireless or wired to the same network. iTunes should allow you to stream AirTunes to your computer, Upstairs, and/or Downstairs. If you want to stream to ALL three, simply select Multiple Speakers in the bottom right corner of iTunes.
    Hope that helps.
Oops! I assumed that you're running one (1) network. After reading the other post, I would agree. In your situation, you need to have one of the Expresses acting as the WDS main base station and the other needs to be set to participate/join which essentially extends the network.
