Airport Express dual signal Wifi oddity Help required please.

I have a 2nd Generation Airport Extreme and a 2nd generation Airport Express.
Both have been reset loaded and reloaded with the latest firmware as of 29/12/2013 to 11/1/2014.
My ISP is Virgin Media UK so I have their wifi router connected to my extreme (with a network cable) and the express is the wifi extender for the extreme.
Their are no issues with either with wifi signal degredation or connectivity.
2 weeks ago I noticed an odd thing with the airport express.
I have a program called iStumbler, the program provides information about nearby Wi-Fi Networks, Bluetooth Devices, etc.
The situation I have is, my Airport Extreme is listed lists the Vendor as Apple and only has one signal output, as expected.
The Airport Express (which is extending the Extreme via wifi) has two signal outputs with two slightly different mac addresses and is not listed as an Apple Device but instead uses the numbers 28-37-37 and has two different Mac Addresses.
Below is an example of what is going on, I have grey out my neighbours signals to show you my network. The locations of the devices are upstairs and downstairs, oddly the location of the second signal (Frequnecy 5500) coming out of the Airport Express is different to the first signal (Frequnecy 2407) of the Airport Express which I also find a little odd. (Across the road according to Google Maps) though not sure the accuracy of this information.
The picture below is just after I hard reset the device and downgraded then upgraded the firmware with 4 different firmware numbers from lowest to highest, which meade no difference to the dual signal.
The Airport Express was set up via the automatic "extend another airport device) mode, then in manual mode. As the Extreme already had security etc. the Express copied the settings. I have, over the years, reset the devices for various drop out issues (neighbours on the same frequencies) or moving home and have also used iStumbler to check networks when setting the kit back up. This is the first time I have seen this issue since about 2 weeks ago. It does not appear to be affecting our network speed at all it's just very odd.
My questions are:-
1/ Is this normal?
2/ Would there be a reason why my Airport Express is now not listed as an Apple Device?
3/ Is there anything I can do to fix this if this is not normal?
4/ Any ides how this could have happened if this is not normal?
5/ Should I just take the Express into the genius dude (or dudette) to have the look at it?
Thank you in advance for any information you can throw my way.

Anyone?

  • Can I use Airport Express as a Wifi Extender?

Forgive my ignorance, but I just swithed to all Apple products a few months ago and I have a question about the airport express.
We currently have one airport extreme base station set up in our house. The only problem is that the g signal for my iPhone won't reach quite far enough to get to the third floor (its a very long and tall home).
I was wondering if you can use the Airport express as a wifi extender with no cords plugged into it, similar to the linksys extenders you can buy that extend the signal range.

    LukeW, welcome to the discussions!
Yes, an AirPort Express could be used with your Extreme to "extend" the wireless network created by the Extreme. I assume here that you have an "n" capable Extreme.
If you have an older 'g" Extreme, the Express could be used to "participate in a WDS" (wireless distribution system), which is a similar setup.
It will probably take some experimenting to find the best position for the Express (you want it to receive as strong a signal as possible and "extend", so a good starting point would be to place the Express at a point that was roughly half way between the Extreme and the area that needs more wireless signal.

  • The network on my airport express works, have wifi on the ipods, etc. But when I open airport utility on my mac and on the iphone nothing exists. Why?

Reboot the modem. Just pull the power for a few seconds. No settings are lost.  The laptop getting through to the internet is not relevent.

  • Do I have to use airport extreme to be a main network if I want to use Airport express extend my wifi range

Do I have to use airport extreme to be a main network if I want to use Airport express extend my wifi range.

You cannot extend wifi from a different brand router..
    Only apple to apple.
But the apple router does not have to be the main router.. it can be in bridge.. as long as it is creating a wireless network it will work fine.

  • Will be renting a condo with an ethernet cord.  Can I plug this into Airport Express and have wifi?

I will be renting a condo with an ethernet cord available.  Can I simply plug this into my Airport express and have wifi for computers, iphone, and printer?

As long as the Ethernet cord leads to a router connected to the Internet, then yes, it will do all that.
What you want to do is the reason a lot of people bring an Airport Express with them on trips. They plug it into the hotel room Ethernet port and bam, their laptops and phones have wireless Internet.
If you don't already have a password on your Airport Express, now would be a good time to add one, especially if Internet usage is metered. Just to keep others from getting onto your network.

  • Utilizing airport express to establish WiFi - TMO's hotspot@home program

Has anyone any positive or negative experiences with apple's wireless compact router: the airport express (not the larger base station), TMO's hotspot@home service, getting UMA connections?
I'll be traveling overseas next month, and some of the hotels don't have wifi in rooms but do have hardwire connections. I was thinking of connecting airport express to create wifi and then connecting with my BB 8820 for UMA and free calls to stateside numbers.

  • Airport Express 802.11n Wifi firmware

    Hello,
    i have an Airport Express 802.11n Wifi Model-Number: A1264
Somehow Airport Utility cannot update the firmware to 7.x. It is stuck at 6.3.
I tried loading the firmware while holding the option key. But Airport Utility tells me it cannot install the 7.4.2 Firmware on this device.
Also there is no option for "n network in the wireless settings in the utility.
What can i do? Whats wrong with may Airport Express?

I don't have my long list of Apple model numbers handy, but I can confirm that if you bought an AirPort Express(n), you would certainly see a Radio Mode option to include 802.11n when you look at the settings in AirPort Utility.
I believe that the firmware for the 802.11n models started with version 7.3.1. I would guess that the "7" designates the addition of "n" capabilities.
I suspect a mistake was made and the device will need to be exchanged.

  • Connect airport express to router wifi not apple

I already have a wifi router is not Apple, I have already configured iPhone and iMac to wirelessly, now I need to connect my hi-fi via an airport express (via wifi of course) I can connect "airport express" to a wifi router does not Apple via wifi?

now I need to connect my hi-fi via an airport express (via wifi of course) I canconnect "airport express" to a wifi router does not Apple via wifi?
Yes, the AirPort Express can "Join" virtually any wireless network if you know the name of the network, the exact type of wirelss security that is being used on the network and the wireless network password.
The Express will work for AirTunes and/or allow you to connect a printer when it is configured this way.
But....the Express cannot provide any additional wireless coverage for the network when it is configured to "Join" the network, so it will not "repeat" or "extend" the wireless network in this type of setup.

  • Using AirPort Express as a WiFi Range Extender

I have a Westell Versalink 327 W combination DSL Modem and Wireless Router downstairs hooked up to an iMac via ethernet cable. Can I use the AirPort Express as a WiFi Range Extender upstairs? Any issues I should be aware of?

I suggest that you check with DLink on this as using the same manufacturer will always give you the best chance at compatibility.
    Maybe this would do it:

  • Can airport express boost signal without connecting to 3wire bigpond router?

Can airport express boost signal without connecting to 3wire bigpond router? just via wi-fi?

The Express would not sit with the bigpond router......it would need to be located in the area where you need more wireless signal coverage.
Assuming that you have an open available Ethernet port on the bigpond router, you can use that to connect the Ethernet cable to the Express and locate the Express where it is needed in a remote location.

  • Can I use my airport express to establish wifi with Motorola SB6120 SURFboard DOCSIS cable modem?

Can I use my airport express to establish wifi connection with a Motorola SN6120 DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem?

Yes, the AEx goes into router mode.. plug in via ethernet to the modem port.. you then need to power cycle the cable modem.. it might need to be off for 20min or more before it will lose the previous connection and start afresh with the Express.

  • HT1515 how does the airport express make my wifi signal stronger?

i am thinking about buying an airporst express because the wifi signal in my room is so slow. so i was wondering if i bought the device, how it would work and how is it conected to my main internet source?

First, please understand that the AirPort Express will only "extend" a wireless signal from another Apple router. It will not work with a device from another manufacturer for this purpose.
The Express "extends" a wireless signal by receiving, amplifying and re-broadcasting the original signal from the "main" Apple router. The result is a much stronger wireless signal with better wireless coverage. Although the Express can make the signal stronger, it cannot make it go faster. So, the Express needs to be located where it can receive a very strong signal from the main Apple router.

  • Airport (express) extremely slow wifi and ethernet speeds! Please help!

    Hello there,
I am having some difficulty with my new airport express. Basically I got it to use while at university where they only have ethernet. It's like a hotel, once you connect to it you log in via a web browser.
The issue is I plug it in, set it up to create a new wireless network, everything connects to it fine (macbook, ipad etc) but then the speed is HORRIBLE.
I did a speed test on my iPhone (over wifi) and the down speed was about 10x slower than what it was connecting my laptop straight to the ethernet port on the wall.
The laptop when plugged in via ethernet to the airport base station was even slower! Speedtest couldn't even load itself.
I used to use my macbook pro and just share the connection with other devices I had, but I didn't like leaving it on near 24/7.
I'm failing to understand why my macbook pro shares the internet fine with other devices, but the airport express cannot do the same (it shares it, but SUPER slow).
Any tips would be appreciated. I've come here as a close to last resort .
In bridge mode it shares the internet with any one device absolutely fine as well.
Hopefully someone can help me out!
    Thanks,
    Tan

Ha that's highly unlikely they can tell you have a router don't worry!
Right so I figured it out after numerous attempts!! My internet is now super fast to all devices and no slow issues at all!
What I did was to change the settings for router mode to 'DHCP and NAT' and although the airport came up with an error about double NAT, this is actually what we want. So you can click the ignore button.
By changing it to NAT the router appears as one device on the uni network and the devices that connect to it are monitored soley by the router so they don't really appear on the uni network. This means that the connection that was previously split to three devices through one point on the uni network is now only going to 'one' device (router) which is then splitting the connection itself and so it's much faster!
Hope that makes sense I know I haven't explained it very well...
I've left all other settings as default in case you were wondering.
    Good luck!

  • Help required please! Netgear router to Airport Express to stream iTunes

I have recently purchased an Airport Express and I have an iTunes account.
I wish to stream music from a computer in one room to a Sony Hi fi in another room (not very far apart). I am having great difficulty in setting this up with instructions in the box.
I have a NETGEAR wireless router provided free by Virgin when they put my broadband cable in. So I need simple step by step instructions on how to link the Netgear router on my computer with the Airport down on my hi-fi. I have the cable to the hi-fi plugged into the Airport and the router is working okay.
I have spent hours on this and have also had a computer expert try to help me but he has drawn a blank. When I click on Airport Utilities the message comes up saying that it has not detected a wireless device. Scan Again! Can anybody help?

initiate the set up using ethernet then configure the Express wireless setting. Y=As the second router you may need to put it in bridge mode. Use Airport Utility to do that.
