Airport express/dvd movie audio transfer

hi gang,
my first mac and looking forward to playing and learning.
my question is, if i run a dvd and watch a movie on my mac, can i send the audio of the movie via airport express to pump out of my hi-fi system. the reason i ask this is i do not have a tv and the misses and i are going deaf. so the volume is not loud enough for our ears and i want to be able to crank the hi-fi up in sync to compensate. can this be done through a/port express or would i have to say run a hard line say from the headphone socket to an auxiliary plug to the back of the amp. this means a 5 meter cable which i prefer as a last resort.
many thanks

Or am I missing the bigger picture?

As long as you have a Superdrive or an external burner/drive, burning, watching, installing, etc. from CD or DVD will work just fine. And so will sharing.

How many airport express can I add to my network for the purpose of using the airport express to send audio signal to different rooms in the house? I'm interested I'm running about six different zones.
What I'm looking to do is to have self powered in ceiling speakers in every room in my house with out having to run wires to every room to carry the audio signal. I would like to use the airport express to do the job of carting the audio signal.
Here's my set up now I have an airport extreme and one airport express that I use to carry audio to one room.

FWIW. I have used up to four AirPort Express Base Stations (AX) for streaming sucessfully in pretty much the way you have described. I didn't have a need to try more so I can't attest that more would or would not work.

  • Cannot see Airport Express as an Audio Output option!

    Hello All,
    Very frustruating.
I bought an AirPort Express hoping to use it as a Audio output device for movies/spotify etc.
Plugged it all in to my reciever (using optical cable) configured it to my TC network.
Opened itunes and the Airplay function is working perfectly. Music is streaming as expected.
However i cannot see the AE in the audio output options (when i "option+click" the speaker icon).
Tearing my hair out as this was the primary reason for purchasing the AE!
any help would be greatly apprecaited.
    Tim

Trying to play movies through VLC and stream the Audio component to my AirPort express. Similary use Spotify on my computer and stream the audio component.
I thought i would be able to enable my laptop (Macbook Air) to use the Airport Express as its 'speakers' through selecting it as the output source in System preferences.
However it does not show up in the system preferences at all, what has me stumped is the Airport Express is 100% functional through itunes as well as some third party applications (Airfoil).
Im very confused as other users (from extensive google searching) appear to be able to atleast see the AirPort Express as an output device.
    Any help greatly appreciated.

  • Airport Express as wifi audio for ip camera?

Hello all. I have a question regarding Airport Express's audio transmitting capabilities. First, I recently purchased an Airport Express to expand the wifi range in my new house. The house is one floor, and my Linksys N router is located on the other side of the house from my bedroom. The signal from the Linksys is spotty at best in the bedroom, so I have the Airport Express connected via CAT5 in bridge mode in my bedroom. The signal is great and everything has worked fine so far with that setup.
The reason that I needed wifi stronger in the bedroom is that we have 2 IP cameras that we use as baby monitors for our toddler and newborn. We have a Trendnet system, which includes a 7" wifi monitor that displays multiple Trendnet cameras connected to your network simultaneously. That all works great as well, with only one drawback. The monitor does not support audio from the 2 IP cameras at all. So I get video but no audio, and the audio is important when using them as baby monitors.
The IP cameras are audio capable, and you can actually hear the audio when you access the cameras from your computer. The only problem is that we have a desktop at home and no laptop (although I recently purchased an iPad, but all IP camera apps that I seen so far have the same lack of audio issue). The IP cameras also have a 3.5 mm output jack on them, so you can hook up speakers to them to extract the sound that way.
My question is this...if I purchased a 2nd Airport Express, is there a way that I could connect the audio output to an AE (through the 3.5 mm jacks) by the baby's camera, and then have the audio wirelessly transmitted to the AE in our bedroom (hooking up a small set of speakers to the AE in the bedroom as the output for the audio)?
I'm very new to the Airport Express world, so any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance!

Sorry, but no. The audio port on the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) is an audio OUTPUT port, not an input port ... so connecting the output audio from the camera via this port won't work. The AX's audio is dependent on receiving an AirTunes (or ROAP protocol) stream over IP ... typically from iTunes (or as Jolly has pointed out via a third-party solution like Airfoil).

  • Airport Express and the audio output.

I bought an Airport Express sometime last year, when it first came out. I don't have any of the packaging or the manual with me. What I would like to know is if Airport Express had support for both analog and optical audio output right from the start (when it was first released).
    Thanks.

Since its release over a year ago, there has only ever been one hardware version of the Airport Express. Therefore - yes - a combo analog/optical digital output has been built into the Airport Express right from the start.
You can download PDF versions of all the manuals at:

  • Airport express an Wifi audio

    Hi,
I need help. I'm using airport express for audio, but when there is a lot of phone , either not connected to my wifi, the audio does not play normally . How can I resolved it ? Is it could be better with making my ssid invisible ?
    Thanks in advance

You can mitigate the effects of wireless interference by using the Express's 5 GHz network, if it is capable of it. All Express models produced within the last five years can create a 5 GHz wireless network, but only the newest iPhones can use 5 GHz.
... Is it could be better with making my ssid invisible ?
No, unfortunately this will not help.

  • Using AirPort Express to stream audio (non-iTunes)

Title says it all - is this possible? Apple's description seems very specific to sending iTunes output to a remote stereo - will the system also work with streaming internet audio?

Out of the box the Airport Express will only stream iTunes output. If you're willing to purchase additional software, Rogue Amoeba's Airfoil will "hijack" audio output from most any program and send it to an Airport Express, Apple TV or another computer on the network using companion Airfoil Speakers software. Available for Mac and Windows, check it out at http://rogueamoeba.com/airfoil/. I have no connection with Rogue Amoeba other than as a satisfied customer.

  • Airport Express for Airplay Audio Stream while still using iPhone's 3G/4G Internet?

I'd like to use an Airport Express to stream music from my iphone via Airplay (AMP > Analog RCA's > Minijack Splitter > Airport Express). Here's the rub: I wont have an internet connection where this setup is located at.
Basic networking would make it impossible to get online with thise becaue the iphone would be looking at the Airport as the default gate.
I understand that you can setup the network on your phone to be a static IP, subnet, and leave the default gateway blank. This should allow the phone to see the Airport/Airplay and still utilize the 3G/LTE of the AT&T service. Can anyone confirm this?  UPDATED, THIS PIECE WORKS LIKE A CHARM.
If that works, that's great, I could stop there, but I'd like to take it a step further to make it easier to use by someone other than a network engineer. Can you set the DHCP server on the Express to give out a Blank default gateway, or will you need to configure the network on each device you connect to it?
The last piece isn't a deal killer for me, but it would make it super easy to use for others.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks!
    Ryan

Hello TKSF78. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
I want to use my Airport Express to stream my music to my stereo so I can listen to music while still using the WIFI connection for internet.
In order to do both simultaneously, you just need to reconfigure the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) to join the wireless network created by the other router.
The following is the basic settings to do so:
AirPort Utility > Manual Setup > AirPort > Wireless
o Wireless Mode: Join a wireless network
o Wireless Network Name: <enter the Network Name or SSID of the wireless network that you want your AX to join>
o Wireless Security: <select the appropriate security type>
o Wireless Password: <enter the appropriate wireless security password>
AirPort Utility > Manual Setup > Music
    o Enable AirTunes (checked)

  • Solved: AirPort Express and AirTunes Audio Distortion Connected to a Stereo

*The problem*: Terrible sound distortion while using AirPort Express AirTunes features. Even when nothing was plugged in, there would be a buzzing noise.
*The setup*: AirPort Express connected via 3.5mm stereo jack to a pair of computer stereo speakers. Note: This post does not apply to you if you are using an optical Toslink between the AirPort Express and your speakers. iTunes installed on a Mac. AirTunes setup to allow music to stream wirelessly to AirPort Express and speakers.
*The solution*: The AirPort Express needs to be grounded. The included AC tip is only two prong. In the US, the third prong (round) is used for grounding.
Therefore you just need to attach the three prong AC tip. This is not included with the AirPort Express. What you need is the Apple Power Extension Cord which has a 3 prong tip.
    Example:
    http://www.amazon.com/Adapter-Extension-Apple-PowerBook-Notebook/dp/B002V4XKRS
This is the same extension cord that comes with most Apple notebooks.
    Hope this helps!

    Bob,
This is really simple so no instructions are necessary.
Plug in the new Express when you get it and have it "Join the existing network"...
Give the iTunes Music section a name like "Front Room Stereo" and that's it...
Plug the stereo into the Express and select it in iTunes for playing music.

  • What other than the Apple Airport Express can make audio systems (speakers/stereos) play with airplay?

    .

Besides the AppleTV there are many AirPlay - enabled devices available from various manufacturers other than Apple.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AirPlay:
"AirPlay wireless technology (receiver mode) is integrated into speaker docks, AV receivers, and stereo systems from companies such as Philips, Marantz, Bowers & Wilkins, Pioneer, Sony, and Denon.[9] Song titles, artists, album names, elapsed and remaining time, and album artwork can appear on AirPlay-enabled speakers with graphical displays."

  • Airport express & digital audio through usb

Can airport express stream digital audio through usb to use with a usb DAC?

No. Digital optical audio is only available via the AirPort Express' audio port only.

  • Apple AirPort Express - use only as wireless audio gateway

    Hello!
I use a Samsung Notebook (Q35) and iTunes extensively. My WLAN (801.11 g) connection is already set up with an existing access point and router - but what I really want to do is to make up a wireless audio connection between iTunes and my stereo system. Sounds like the AirPort Express is the right thing to do - but, please, can anybody tell me
    a) if I can use both my existing WLAN network and the AirPort Express as ONLY audio gateway to my stereo TOGETHER at the same time (I do not want to include the AirPort into my WLAN-DSL network - I only want to use it as audio gateway to the stereo),
    b) which performance I can expect in such configuration (does surfing the internet slow down the audio link in such configuration)?
    c) can I use the AirPort Express to take up an extrenal harddrive in such a configuration?
Do You have any suggestions of alternatives for a wireless audio gateway to the stereo? Are there other, generally useable ways?
Thanks very much for Your answer in advance.
    Björn
P.S.: Do You know - can I use the USB connector in the AirPort Express to connect to a USB hub - and use it to connect it to my iPod and synchronize my iPod wireless?

    hi Björn,
    a) if I can use both my existing WLAN network and the AirPort Express as ONLY audio gateway to my stereo TOGETHER at the same time (I do not want to include the AirPort into my WLAN-DSL network - I only want to use it as audio gateway to the stereo),
the Airpor Express can be configure to join your existing WLAN. so as a part of your local network, it will be an accessible device while you can still used your internet.
    b) which performance I can expect in such configuration (does surfing the internet slow down the audio link in such configuration)?
i haven't notice a significant slow down while i'm surfing internet and streaming AirTunes but i'm not able to tell you how much bandwidth AirTunes actually needs.
    c) can I use the AirPort Express to take up an extrenal harddrive in such a configuration?
No, only the new Airport Extreme n base station can support AirDrive but the Airport Extreme base station does not have the AirTunes features.
Do You have any suggestions of alternatives for a wireless audio gateway to the stereo? Are there other, generally useable ways?
personnally, i do beleive that the AirTunes features you will get with the Airport Express is the better alternative since you already use iTunes for your playback.
P.S.: Do You know - can I use the USB connector in the AirPort Express to connect to a USB hub - and use it to connect it to my iPod and synchronize my iPod wireless?
to my knowledge, the usb socket on the Airport Express can only be used by a USB printer or a AirTunes remote control. you will not be able to synchronize your iPod on the Airport Express.

  • Slow transfer speed with Airport Express N in an N-only 5Ghz network.

    I have a Time Capsule set to 802.11n-only (5GHz).
My new Airport Express N is set to extend such network.
I have a Mac Mini connected via Ethernet to the ethernet port of the Airport Express; however when I transfer files from the Mac Mini to Time Capsule the speed is incredibly slow (1 Megabyte of data every 3-4 seconds).
I know I'm supposed to get 100Mb/s via the Ethernet airport.
    Any ideas?

I have the same problem with the 5ghz mode from my time Capsule. The connection is fine until the wireless connection is maxed out, then the wireless conenction drops and I have to click on the airport toolbar icon to get it reconnected (Just click on the menu item...I dont actually have to re-select the wireless network).
Dropping down to the 2.4ghz mode solves the problem, but I want the bandwidth increase 5ghz gives me. Thats why I bought the Time Capsule to begin with.
Some have said that this issue started with Leopard. I cannot confirm this since I didnt have any 802.11n equipment until after I upgraded to Leopard. Also, I noticed that with Time Capsule firmware 7.3 the connection drops but the airport icon stays solid. In 7.3.1 the connection drops and the airport icon greys out (indicating no connection).
