Airport Express & Ethernet Switch

Hi All,
I'm hoping somone can help me here.
I have an original Airport Express that was previously connected to an old Linksys router via my cable modem.
After experiencing intermitent web surfing speeds(via my ethernet connected iMac), I decided to swap my Linksys router to a NetGear 8 port gigabit switch.
My ethernet connection works fine, but for some reason the Airport express is not able to connect. In the airport utility, I am seeing two errors:
1. Internet Connection
2. No DNS Servers
I've reset the airport express numerous times as well as reset my cable modem, ethernet switch, and iMac.
I even doubled back and connected the old Linksys router and the Airport had no trouble connecting.
Any input/advice would be greatly appreciated.

You removed your router, and cannot use a switch without one. There is nothing to switch.
Connect your Express directly to the cable modem and reconfigure it as a wireless router.
Since your original AirPort Express has only one Ethernet port, there is no longer a connection available for a switch. You either need a new Express or Extreme or router with at least one LAN port.

Does anyone know if the airport express' ethernet port outputs to devices as well as receives.
Ideally I need to convert my current 802.11n time capsule signal back to a ethernet device (a AV component) that does not have wifi capability.
Is this possible? Could I connect my airport express near the device and connect them up using ethernet - would this connect my device (via ethernet) to my internet signal?

If you have the 802.11g AirPort Express (AX), you will need to configure the AX and Time Capsule to wirelessly connect using WDS. In this mode the AX's Ethernet port will be active.
If you have the brand new 802.11n AX you can either use the new 802.11n "extend network" feature OR WDS to wirelessly connect the two.

What generation of Express is it? What OS are you using? Have you tried with multiple cables?

Airport Express Ethernet

I have an Airport Express and I have used it as a extension from my Airport Extreme. I have brought it into work today to create a wireless signal via an ethernet cable but the light is flashing orange and is sending out no signal. Do I have to re-configure for this connection and if so will it cancel the other operation I have set up on it already? Any info and set up instuctions are appreciated and thanks in advance.

Most likely you will need to reconfigure your AirPort Express Base Station (AX) for the type of network that it is being used with.
The AX can store up to five different configuration profiles.
You will need to use the AirPort Utility, located in Applications/Utilities to create & save these profiles.
To create a new profile:
Open AirPort Utility, select your AX from the list, and then, click "Manual Setup."
From the AirPort Utility menu, select "Base Station," and then "Manage Profiles."
Click "+" to create a new profile; give it a name, and then, click OK.
Set options, such as network name, passwords, Internet connection method, etc.
When done setting the options, click Update.
To switch profiles:
Open the AirPort Utility, select your AX from the list, and then, click "Manual Setup."
From the AirPort Utility menu, select "Base Station," and then "Manage Profiles."
Click on the desired profile, and then, click OK to apply the new profile and restart the AX. Just remember to switch to the desired configuration profile before removing power from the AX.

Airport Express "ethernet unplugged"

My airport express was working fine. Now has blinking yellow light. Airport utility says "ethernet unplugged". I verified that the AE is plugged into a working ethernet cable from my router by unplugging the AE and plugging a laptop into the same cable and verifying that my laptop is then connected.
Tried resetting the AE (by pressing the little recessed button). Reconfigured, but same problem. AE firmware is 6.3. iMac is running Leopard with all SW updates applied. Ideas?

It appears that the communication between the modem and the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) is "broken."
Try the following, in order, until resolved:
1. If the modem has a reset switch, use it to reset the modem. Wait at least 5-10 minutes for the modem to initialize.
2. Remove power from the modem. If it has a backup battery, remove this as well. Wait 5-10 minutes. Replace the battery, and add power back to the modem.
3. Perform a complete power recycle of your network components as follows:
Modem/Router Power Recycling - Quick
o Power-off the modem, AX, & computer(s); Wait at least 5 minutes.
o Power-on the modem; Wait at least 5 minutes.
o Power-on the AX; Wait at least 5 minutes.
o Power-on the computer(s)
If this fails to get the modem to "recognize" the Internet router, then try the "Full" version.
Modem/Router Power ReCycling - Full
o Power-off the modem, AX, & computer(s). (Wait at least 30 minutes. If possible, leave the modem off overnight.)
o Power-on the modem; Wait at least 15 minutes.
o Power-on the AX; Wait at least 5 minutes.
o Power-on the computer(s)
4. Contact your ISP to have them perform a "modem reset."

Confusion with AEBS, Airport Express & Ethernet

I have an Airport Extreme Base Station (AEBS) in one room and an Airport Express (AX) in other. The AX is set to extend the wireless network.
The AEBS is right by my desktop machine so I have opted to connect to the AEBS by way of an ethernet cable. When I went this route I turned the Airport off on my MacPro. When I got the AX I couldn't see the device in my Airport Utility until I turned the Airport on. My quesiton is by leaving the Airport on in Airport utility and having the ethernet connected is my MacPro connecting via wireless or directly by way of the ethernet cable? If I turn the airport off in the Airport utility then does that turn off the wireless or does it just think I want to turn wireless off on my machine?
In theory it may not matter but I have a gigabit ethernet switch that I use so I can also connect a NAS drive and a windows PC (for work) into. I just like to know how I connect.

Both, it turns out. In the "Info" tab of Network Utility you'll see that both your Ethernet port (en0) and your AirPort connection (en1) have an IP address and network traffic.
If I turn the airport off in the Airport utility then does that turn off the wireless or does it just think I want to turn wireless off on my machine?
Don't confuse (a) using the AirPort menu bar item to "Turn AirPort Off", which just disables the AirPort circuitry of your Mac and (b) using AirPort utility to disable the AirPort functionality of your AirPort base station, which reduces the base station to an Ethernet router.

Is the Airport express Ethernet port input only?

I am thinking of the airport express to stream audio now that the iPad supports airplay, but am wondering if the ethernet port is useful. I think that the Airport can connect to my existing wifi, and I have the audio interface, so far so good! But I also have a gaming adapter that takes the wifi signal and outputs it through an ethernet cable to my DVR, I am wondering if I can redeploy the gaming adapter

If you configure current model the AirPort Express to "join" a wireless network for AirTunes/AirPlay, you can also enable the ethernet port if you wish so an ethernet device can connect. If you need more than one ethernet port for devices, you can attach an ethernet switch to the Express.

HT4259 Airport Express Ethernet port used for home entertainment?

I use my Airport Express to extend my network with my 2TB TimeCapsule base station. The Airport Express has one ethernet port. Can I buy some other device with say 3 or 4 ethernet ports and plug it into the one ethernet port on the AP Express to connect all my home entertainment devices? What should I buy if this can work?

As long as you are talking about the N version of the Express.. what is often called Gen1.. then any switch will do the job. The express is only 100mbit.
The cost of network switch is $20-40 depending on the number of ports and if it is older 10/100 or gigabit.. IMHO buy 8 port gigabit.. any brand you want,, they are much the same.. metal case ones are nicer than plastic.. but they are cheap consumer item in any computer store.
If you buy what I suggest, it will be useful well into the future.. the slower 5 port is cheaper but the usefulness of it into the future is questionable..

Wireless bridge to LW 12/640 via Airport Express/ethernet?

We recently switched to FiOS, which means they installed their own wireless router and created a new network. I want to keep printing to my trusty 12/640 PS laserwriter, but it's not really feasible to run a cable to the new router, which is now on a different floor. I've tried without success to configure and use an Airport Express (not Extreme) in "bridge" or "client" mode to extend the network but the system message keeps saying the new network cannot be extended. I thought I would then use a new 3rd party router to set up a separate wierless network just for the printer...but the fellow at the local Apple store said that the Express cannot connect with a printer at all via Ethernet, only USB.
Will a USB-to-Ethernet adapter do the trick? If so, do they come in differnt configurations that I shoulsd watch for?
Or is there some other way to get this to work short of spending money I do not have on still more hardware?
Or am I reduced to drilling a hole in the floor?

The LaserWriter 12/640PS is an Ethernet Level 2 Printer with built-in LPD/LPR. Once it assigned an Ethernet Address, it can stand by itself as Network device.
The Verizon router is on the first floor; the printer and my own (currently-unused) router (whether the Airport Express or the new SMC) are both in the basement, within probably 12 feet of one another. There is no computer down there; we have an iMac on the first floor and another on the second floor. One of those was once next to the printer, and I did assign it a hard-coded IP address at that time which let me run an Ethernet cable between the router and the printer.
So I suppose the issue ultimately comes down to how to get the printer to be available on the network (whether Verizon's or a home-grown one) short of drilling a hole in the floor, which will make domestic bliss rather less blissful. If this is not possible then I will have to accept that and either drill the hole as inconspicuously as possible or scrounge some quarters from under the sofa cushions for a newer machine, but I really hate to have to do that...plus there really aren't any, I looked. Airport Express Ethernet Port in Client Mode Please

I am writing here as I can find anywhere to post feedback on Airport Express. I would really like to see the Ethernet port work in client mode. I am sure not the only one (a search on the net tells me so). If someone from apple could explain why this is not possible, I would be interested so that this subject can be put to rest.

Simple reason - Apple's engineers made a design decision not to support it. Speculation as to the reasons for that decision are not permitted in these forums. Apple won't tell us here either, since their employees don't post to these forums on matters of this nature.
As I suspect you are aware, the ethernet port is active when the Airport Express is configured as a remote base station in a wireless distribution system (WDS).

Airport Express Ethernet port doesn't work.

I bought my airport express little over a year ago, so the new one, and since then the ethernet port stopped working. The only way i can get it to work is by bending the eithernet cable a certain direction and holding it down, other than that it does not recognise there is even a CAT5 cable plugged up to it. Has anyone ever seen this or know what to do to fix it? I do not want to have to buy another.

This should not be much a problem, unless it's...... you guess it:

If it is, does changing cables help?
If it really is the port and not the cables, I"d probably try to fix it manually myself, unless it's still under warranty.

Airport Express Ethernet WiFi bridging with 3rd-party wireless base?

I want to use an Airport Express as a substitute for a very-long Ethernet cable. Essentially, I want to connect a device (say, a computer) to the AE using an Ethernet cable, have the AE connect to a base station (not an Apple device) via wireless, and reach the network (Internet) on the other side of the base.

I'm baffled. Here is what I've done:
-Reset the AE to factory defaults
-Connected a laptop to the AE via the Ethernet cable. Turn off my wireless (to make sure I'm talking to the AE via wired connection; this confirms the AE Ethernet port is working.)
-Configured the AE (via the Ethernet cable) in a variety of ways (see below), restarted it.
(alternately)
-Reset the AE to factory defaults
-Connected a laptop to the AE via wireless (connecting to the default-named network the AE creates on factory default reset)
-Configured the AE in a variety of ways, restarted it.
(This essentially suggests the AE is fully functional and not failed; I'm successfully able to connect to and configure the AE after factory default reset either wired, or wirelessly.)
I've tried various configuration attempts, but the one that seems to get closest - but still fails the goal is this:
-On "Airport / Wireless" tab: Join Wireless Network
--(I've entered my SSID for my network in the Wireless Network name field)
--(I've selected WEP 128 for security. I don't think I should be using WDS, given what I've seen elsewhere about WDS only working with an Apple Extreme.)
--(Of course, I've confirmed the passwords match)
-On "Internet / Internet Connection", the "Connect using" dropdown is disabled / greyed. This appears to only be enabled when I select "Participate in a WDS network" in the Wireless tab - which (as I said) I don't think I can use.
-On "Internet / Internet Connection", the Configure IPv4 is set to use DHCP
On restart, the AE successfully starts - it get's its IP address, the FIOS base station sees the device and lists it as online, and I can transmit audio successfully from iTunes to the stereo via the AE.
BUT, configured this way, the Ethernet port is not providing network connectivity to the device attached to the AE via the Ethernet cable -- the same Ethernet cable that was moments ago letting me talk to the AE to configure it is now not active. When I attach my MacBook to this cable and open System Preferences and look at the Ethernet connection, it shows as not even having a cable plugged in; there's no Ethernet link / carrier present. (Until I do a Factory Reset on the AE, after which it works fine again.)
Note: My AE is about 2-3 years old. I initially / previously had this configuration working just fine after I first installed the AE (after much pain, I recall). But I recently had Verizon installed, and in the process they put in a new base station. I seem to not be able to re-create the configuration I had that was working before.
Note 2: I'm attempting to use the wireless base station supplied by Verizon FIOS, which supports a ton of connectivity options - though it doesn't list (and therefore I'm assuming doesn't do) Apple's WDS.
Note 3: When I had it working before, I could have sworn the AE was also acting as a wireless base station that I could see in my available wireless networks listings, and was able to connect to the Internet wirelessly through it - as if it was a repeater of some kind. This isn't crucial; but it could be helpful in diagnosis.
Note 4: I think I may have previously had the AE connecting via another device: I also have a Netgear WG602v2 that was connected BaseRouter---Netgear((( ))) AE---Device (where --- is an Ethernet wire, and ((())) is a wireless link). HOWEVER, I can't be sure this is how it was working; this may have been a relic from attempts to get it working originally several years ago. It is not essential.
What am I missing?

It sounds like you have an older 802.11 b/g AirPort Express, which as Duane mentions will not function as you would like.
The newer AirPort Express 802.11n has a function called ProxySTA which allows the device to join (according to the attached article) virtually any wireless network with an option to "enable ethernet clients".
While it is not possible to know whether any wireless network will be compatible with this feature, it has worked on a 2Wire and Netgear router that I've tried. Haven't tried Verizon Fios, so I can't assure you that this will work as you desire.

Another option might be to use a pair of ethernet powerline apapters, providing that everything is on the same master electrical circuit. In general, I've found the adapters to be more reliable and better performing than wireless, but of course, your mileage may vary. Post back if you need more info on this option.

Airport Express Ethernet Port

Ok, I have an Airport Extreme base station, and I was thinking of getting an Airport Express to extend the range of my wireless network. I have been reading on the Airport Express part of the Apple site and it says the Ethernet port can be used to connect to a DSL or Cable modem, or an existing network. I was wondering If I could use it as a way to connect my PS2 to the Internet?

2. run the Airport Setup Assistant on one of your Airport card equipped Macs, and use its guidance to configure the second Airport Express as a new base station that "extends" the existing wireless network created by the Airport Express acting as your main base station.

Airport Express Ethernet Problem

I tried searching for help and couldn't find anything.
I use an airport express as a wireless router attached to a cable modem. I keep loosing my connection to the internet however the indicator light stays green. Unplugging the ethernet cord and plugging it back in fixes it, but this is a pain. I tried a hard reset and it hasn't helped.

Airport express - ethernet cable

Hope you guys may be able to help here. Just moved house and during the build works, we've had 4 cat 5e points done to each room. The basement has an imac with a zepplin in close proximity, both of these have data points within reach. Grd floor living area has my mac book air with a bang & olufsen stereo closeby. What i'm after doing is having the airport express plugged near the B&O, ethernet the airport express to avoid any potential drop off's which our last house suffered, so i'm hopefuly bypassing wifi, and jack pluggin the airport express to the B&O. All worked via wifi before, but will this still work if i use the ethernet only?
I have various steroes around the house and hoping to use the remainder of my airport expreses this way too...unless you guys tell me...Nope, gotta be wifi

I know it's gonna be different thread, b ut chancing my arm and asking, have an B&W Zeppelin airplay, hard wired it via ethernet, but with the firmware upgrade, always reverts to wifi and during the day, music drops off...any thoughts?
