Airport Express - Ethernet to Wireless Bridge

I use an Airport Express to create a wireless network in my university halls from the ethernet port in the wall. All of my apple devices can connect without problems, however whenever a Windows computer connects it can successfully join the network but only local only, it can never reach the internet. Is there any way to solve this problem!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Welcome to the discussion area!
Check the firewall settings on your Windows computer. You really need to post in a Windows forum for your operating system, as your AirPort Express is working fine and there are no other adjustments on the Express that you could make.

  • Airport Express as a Wireless Bridge and AirTunes?

I have a linksys router and just got a Tivo I was thinking of getting the Tivo wireless adapter but after much though i had a brainstorm
What if i were go get an express and hook it up as a wireless bridge (connect the Tivo to the ethernet port) and while i am at it connect my computer to my stereo system via AirTunes.
Is it possible to use the Airport Express as a wireless bridge and use airtunes at the same time while using my linksys router?

To do this, you must use WDS. Very, very, very few 3rd party devices are compatible with Apple's WDS.
The Linksys WRT54G or WRT54GS (not latest versions v5) however are compatible with Apple's WDS. If you have one of those, it is possible.

  • Use airport express as a wireless bridge?

    Hi,
I am wondering if an airport express can be used as a wireless bridge to connect my xbox on my lan?
    Lan description:
dsl modem --> wifi linksys router --> office pc
wifi -- airport express as a client --> audio system
Right now, I use it solely for itune streaming, but I would like to connect my xbox to the ethernet port of the airport express give internet access, possible?

Thank you for replying, I was finding all sorts of confusing information, some said it would work, others said it wouldn't, and I was hoping someone with a little experience would know firsthand
I'm hoping I can take it to work where we have an iMac with Snow Leopard and pre-configure it there to do what I want at home, but if not I'll find a way to make it work, the link might come in handy for me.
I'll report back anything I encounter with a link to my blog, hopefully that will help others out as well.

  • Airport Express as a wireless bridge

I can buy an airport express relatively cheaply (£20) and was wondering if it can solve an issue I have. I have a Toshiba HD-XE1 HD-DVD player which has an ethernet port use for upgrades etc. I have a (non-apple) wireless network 802.11a/g using wep security. So my question is whether I can use the airport express to provide a wireless bridge for the HD-XE1 and if so how?
    Thanks in advance

Hello foxyloxy. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
You could connect the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) directly, using an Ethernet cable, to the existing wireless router. In turn, the AX would be reconfigured as a bridge to allow the existing wireless router to continue to provide NAT/DHCP services for the entire network.
To set up the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) as a bridge, either connect to the AX's wireless network or temporarily connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then, using the AirPort Admin Utility (located in the \Applications\Utilities folder), make these settings:
    Network tab
    o Distribute IP addresses (unchecked)
    o Apply the new setting.

  • Airport Express as a wireless bridge can't connect using the 2.4GHz band

I have an Airport Extreme with simultaneous dual-band support as well as an Airport Express serving as a wireless bridge to extend the range of my primary base station.

By the way, the 5GHz band does not penetrate very well,
That is not surprising since the higher frequency signals are not as strong as 2.4 GHz signals. Many users are finding that you almost have to have a line-of-sight situation between the computer and router for 5 GHz to work really well.
and the signal becomes weaker significantly after it penetrates through two walls.
Again, not surprising. What is surprising is that the AirPort Express was choosing the 5 GHz band to "extend", as it normally latches onto the stronger of the two signals, which almost always the 2.4 GHz signal.
You may be correct that the newer firmware has made some changes in this regard. My guess would be that most users were trying to extend the 5 GHz band and not having much success. We'll keep an eye on this.

  • Wireless bridge to LW 12/640 via Airport Express/ethernet?

We recently switched to FiOS, which means they installed their own wireless router and created a new network. I want to keep printing to my trusty 12/640 PS laserwriter, but it's not really feasible to run a cable to the new router, which is now on a different floor. I've tried without success to configure and use an Airport Express (not Extreme) in "bridge" or "client" mode to extend the network but the system message keeps saying the new network cannot be extended. I thought I would then use a new 3rd party router to set up a separate wierless network just for the printer...but the fellow at the local Apple store said that the Express cannot connect with a printer at all via Ethernet, only USB.
Will a USB-to-Ethernet adapter do the trick? If so, do they come in differnt configurations that I shoulsd watch for?
Or is there some other way to get this to work short of spending money I do not have on still more hardware?
Or am I reduced to drilling a hole in the floor?
    Thanks in advance! Bill

    Could you please describe:
    Where is the Router
    Where is the printer
What computer is near the Printer (if any), and how is that computer connected to the Network
The LaserWriter 12/640PS is an Ethernet Level 2 Printer with built-in LPD/LPR. Once it assigned an Ethernet Address, it can stand by itself as  Network device.
The Verizon router is on the first floor; the printer and my own (currently-unused) router (whether the Airport Express or the new SMC) are both in the basement, within probably 12 feet of one another. There is no computer down there; we have an iMac on the first floor and another on the second floor. One of those was once next to the printer, and I did assign it a hard-coded IP address at that time which let me run an Ethernet cable between the router and the printer.
So I suppose the issue ultimately comes down to how to get the printer to be available on the network (whether Verizon's or a home-grown one) short of drilling a hole in the floor, which will make domestic bliss rather less blissful. If this is not possible then I will have to accept that and either drill the hole as inconspicuously as possible or scrounge some quarters from under the sofa cushions for a newer machine, but I really hate to have to do that...plus there really aren't any, I looked. Thanks!

  • Can you use the Express as a wireless bridge?

I need to get an ethernet connection to a slingbox next to my airport express. My airport express is currently configured as a client that connects wirelessly to my netgear router that connects to my cable modem. I can play itunes on any computer to the airport express.
Is it possible to use that ethernet port on the AE to bridge my slingbox back to the netgear/cable modem?

Can you use the Express as a wireless bridge?
Yes as long as WDS is used with a compatible device.
Is it possible to use that ethernet port on the AE to bridge my slingbox back to the netgear/cable modem?
No. The Netgear base station is not compatible with Apple's WDS implementation.

  • Airport Express Ethernet Problem

I tried searching for help and couldn't find anything.
I use an airport express as a wireless router attached to a cable modem. I keep loosing my connection to the internet however the indicator light stays green. Unplugging the ethernet cord and plugging it back in fixes it, but this is a pain. I tried a hard reset and it hasn't helped.
    Any ideas? Thanks.

  • Airport Express - Ethernet jack

    Hi
Does anyone know if the airport express' ethernet port outputs to devices as well as receives.
Ideally I need to convert my current 802.11n time capsule signal back to a ethernet device (a AV component) that does not have wifi capability.
Is this possible? Could I connect my airport express near the device and connect them up using ethernet - would this connect my device (via ethernet) to my internet signal?
    Thanks

If you have the 802.11g AirPort Express (AX), you will need to configure the AX and Time Capsule to wirelessly connect using WDS. In this mode the AX's Ethernet port will be active.
If you have the brand new 802.11n AX you can either use the new 802.11n "extend network" feature OR WDS to wirelessly connect the two.

  • Can't See Airport Express on my Wireless N/work

I have a D-Link DSL G604t router, and have spent hours trying to get it to "see" AE - no joy. I have added the MAC Address to the enabled access list but still nothing - everytime I scan for it, it cannot be found. My Compaq l/top connects no problem to the network, and I cannot find any answers in the manual. Only trying to send itunes to my hifi - don't need to share connections or printers.

    Hi:
I had a similar problem with a DLink DI-624 wireless router and AirPort Express afew months ago. Here is what you can do.
As an intermediate step, which is undocumented but I found necessary, connect your Airport Express to the wireless router via an Ethernet cable. After the wired connection, your router will definitely see AirPort Express. Then you can go through the normal network registration process. Once this is complete, you can then power off Airport Express and disconnect it from the router and then place it where you originally intended. Once the solid green light comes on (30-60 seconds), you should be able to access AirPort Express the way it was intended, in a wireless manner.
Again, this worked for me after hours of unsuccessful struggling with the installation process as described in the Apple documentation. I hope this helps.

  • Can I use my Airport Extreme as a wireless bridge?

Can I use my Airport Extreme as a wireless bridge?

When you say "wireless bridge", I assume that you want the AirPort Extreme to receive a wireless signal and provide an Ethernet output, correct?
If you have another Apple router providing your "main" wireless network, the AirPort Extreme could possibly be configured to "Extend a wireless network".
In that setting, the Extreme provides more wireless coverage and Ethernet ports are enabled, so you could connect an Ethernet device that way.
But, the AirPort Extreme cannot do this with a product from another manufacturer.
So, in order to answer your question specifically, can you provide the make and model number of your "main" router?

  • Airport Express questions on wireless print serving

I have a wireless network setup using a linksys router and thinking about using an Airport Express as a wireless print server in another room. I currently have a Canon MP500, 2 wired PCs connected to the router and 2 wireless laptops one Windows and an iBook. Would the Airport Express connect to my existing wireless network to act as a wireless print server for my network?
    Thank you

Hi, does anyone know how to change the port setting on Windows XP Pro. I recently purchased an Airport extreme and the network is working great, however when I tried to set up the printer the documentation left some key peices of information out.
I had followed the step for installing a printer, but when I got to the point about specifing the adapter type, the documentation in the manual that came with the Airport skipped over that part. I guessed at the adapter and unfortunatly (and obviously after reading the instructions here http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/1008.html) I chose the wrong adapter. Now I want to go back and fix it but I can't figure out how. When I tried to run the add printer wizard again and the port setting wizard it said the port (IP_10.0.1.1) was alread in use and kicked me out of the wizard.
How do I change the settings on the port to the correct settings?
    Thanks

  • I cannot get my Airport Express to accept wireless clients.

I cannot get my Airport Express to accept wireless clients. After resetting to factory default and reconfiguring, it works briefly but then stops again.
The Airport Express is on the second floor of my house and is seen by Airport Utility. Using a LAN cable with the Express works no problem.
My network is created by an Airport Extreme (ground floor) and extended by a Time Capsule (first floor)
Have run through all settings repeatedly and as I said I can get it to work briefly by resetting and then reconfiguring, but after a short while again my iOS devices can no longer connect and revert to cellular.

The issue is most likely due to the fact that the AirPort Express may be too far from the AirPort Extreme to properly extend it with enough bandwidth to be useful.
It is important to understand that with Apple 802.11n or 802.11ac base station an extended network works in a wheel-like fashion with the base station to be extended at the hub and each extending base station along one of the spokes. This type of configuration does not allow for daisy chaining the base stations. That is, in your case, both the Time Capsule and AirPort Express are attempting to extend the AirPort Extreme.
Each extending base station must be within a certain signal quality range in order to extend the network properly. Please check out the following AirPort User tip for details.

  • Trying to connect my wired PC to the wireless airport express via the wireless router.

Trying to connect my wired PC to the wireless airport express via the wireless router.  TP-link wired/wireless router.  Ultimate goal is to send music from iTunes on PC to wireless router, then to airport, then to reciever.  The amber light is blinking.  Thanks in advance for the help!

If I'm understanding right your need and your computer has wired access to your network/router, all you have to do is give your AX wireless or wired access to your network too.
Wired should be easier.  Just use a network cable to connect to the router.  Power up the AX and look for it on AirPort Utility, do so without changing any of your computer settings.  If it's visible, then on iTunes your AX should be visible on the AirPlay icon at the bottom-right corner.
If you want to connect your AX to your router wirelessly I would suggest to reset your AX settings by pressing and holding for a few secs the reset button next to all the ports.  Once it is reset, using your computer try to look for the wireless network it'll be creating, it should be something like Apple Network 4341eb.  Join that network and, using the AirPort Utility, configure your AX as a network client.  Go to Wireless > Wireless Mode: Join a wireless network.
Select your router wireless network from the drop-down menu, select the appropriate security and type in your password.  Click update.
It'll restart and automatically join your network.  Have your computer join back your router network and, again, in iTunes bottom right you should be able to see the AX speakers.
Let me know if this worked.

  • Can u run Airport Express and a wireless modem together?

Can u run Airport Express and a wireless modem together at the same time?
I'm using AE purely for music distribution and have just bought a wireless modem for the internet (not a AE). However I can now only select either the AE network, OR the wireless internet network (it's BT HomeHub). Hence I can either play music or use the internet, but not together!
    Any ideas anyone..??
    Thanx
    David

You should configure your AirPort Express (AX) to join the wireless network provided by the modem. The instructions are in KB 302153, AirPort Express: How to join an existing wireless network in client mode.
