Airport Express Ethernet WiFi bridging with 3rd-party wireless base?

I want to use an Airport Express as a substitute for a very-long Ethernet cable. Essentially, I want to connect a device (say, a computer) to the AE using an Ethernet cable, have the AE connect to a base station (not an Apple device) via wireless, and reach the network (Internet) on the other side of the base.
A diagram of the desired goal is at http://img.skitch.com/20091111-1j7a61eka32jqntm217wwg7d3g.jpg
I'm baffled. Here is what I've done:
-Reset the AE to factory defaults
-Connected a laptop to the AE via the Ethernet cable. Turn off my wireless (to make sure I'm talking to the AE via wired connection; this confirms the AE Ethernet port is working.)
-Configured the AE (via the Ethernet cable) in a variety of ways (see below), restarted it.
(alternately)
-Reset the AE to factory defaults
-Connected a laptop to the AE via wireless (connecting to the default-named network the AE creates on factory default reset)
-Configured the AE in a variety of ways, restarted it.
(This essentially suggests the AE is fully functional and not failed; I'm successfully able to connect to and configure the AE after factory default reset either wired, or wirelessly.)
I've tried various configuration attempts, but the one that seems to get closest - but still fails the goal is this:
-On "Airport / Wireless" tab: Join Wireless Network
--(I've entered my SSID for my network in the Wireless Network name field)
--(I've selected WEP 128 for security. I don't think I should be using WDS, given what I've seen elsewhere about WDS only working with an Apple Extreme.)
--(Of course, I've confirmed the passwords match)
-On "Internet / Internet Connection", the "Connect using" dropdown is disabled / greyed. This appears to only be enabled when I select "Participate in a WDS network" in the Wireless tab - which (as I said) I don't think I can use.
-On "Internet / Internet Connection", the Configure IPv4 is set to use DHCP
On restart, the AE successfully starts - it get's its IP address, the FIOS base station sees the device and lists it as online, and I can transmit audio successfully from iTunes to the stereo via the AE.
BUT, configured this way, the Ethernet port is not providing network connectivity to the device attached to the AE via the Ethernet cable -- the same Ethernet cable that was moments ago letting me talk to the AE to configure it is now not active. When I attach my MacBook to this cable and open System Preferences and look at the Ethernet connection, it shows as not even having a cable plugged in; there's no Ethernet link / carrier present. (Until I do a Factory Reset on the AE, after which it works fine again.)
Note: My AE is about 2-3 years old. I initially / previously had this configuration working just fine after I first installed the AE (after much pain, I recall). But I recently had Verizon installed, and in the process they put in a new base station. I seem to not be able to re-create the configuration I had that was working before.
Note 2: I'm attempting to use the wireless base station supplied by Verizon FIOS, which supports a ton of connectivity options - though it doesn't list (and therefore I'm assuming doesn't do) Apple's WDS.
Note 3: When I had it working before, I could have sworn the AE was also acting as a wireless base station that I could see in my available wireless networks listings, and was able to connect to the Internet wirelessly through it - as if it was a repeater of some kind. This isn't crucial; but it could be helpful in diagnosis.
Note 4: I think I may have previously had the AE connecting via another device: I also have a Netgear WG602v2 that was connected BaseRouter---Netgear((( ))) AE---Device (where --- is an Ethernet wire, and ((())) is a wireless link). HOWEVER, I can't be sure this is how it was working; this may have been a relic from attempts to get it working originally several years ago. It is not essential.
What am I missing?

It sounds like you have an older 802.11 b/g AirPort Express, which as Duane mentions will not function as you would like.
The newer AirPort Express 802.11n has a function called ProxySTA which allows the device to join (according to the attached article) virtually any wireless network with an option to "enable ethernet clients".
While it is not possible to know whether any wireless network will be compatible with this feature, it has worked on a 2Wire and Netgear router that I've tried. Haven't tried Verizon Fios, so I can't assure you that this will work as you desire.

Another option might be to use a pair of ethernet powerline apapters, providing that everything is on the same master electrical circuit. In general, I've found the adapters to be more reliable and better performing than wireless, but of course, your mileage may vary. Post back if you need more info on this option.

  • How to control an Apple Base Station with 3rd-party wireless card?

I recently upgraded my early 2004 Power Mac G5 2GHz DP to the 802.11n standard using a Newertechnology MAXPower 802.11n/g/b Wireless PCI Adapter to communicate with my new "n"-standard 2TB Time Capsule. My G5 shipped with an 802.11g-standard Airport Card which I disconnected when I installed the PCI card to avoid hardware conflicts. The new n-standard wireless set-up works without a problem, but having lost the Apple Airport Card, I no longer have the ability to control/manipulate the Timecapsule via the third-party card e.g. I cannot connect/disconnect my internet connection or otherwise troubleshoot the base station.
So, the question is, how can control an Apple base station with a third-party wireless card? As it stands now, I must boot up my laptop just to see if I have a connection.
    My thanks in advance,
    T. North
    Brussels, Belgium

Thanks for the assistance. Yes, I can indeed administer the Time Capsule from inside the Airport Utility, but I am still unable to connect or disconnect the Internet connection like you can with an Airport card (using the Airport drop-down menu.) If my ISP signal drops for whatever reason (which is does often) I have to boot up my laptop just to reconnect. Is there some feature within the Airport Utility that permits one to connect/disconnect the signal? If there is, I haven't found it yet.

  • Airport Express won't work with Acer Aspire One

I've recently set-up a wifi network for my parents. They have a cable modem from which an ethernet cable runs to their Vonage modem. From there, another ethernet runs to the Airport Express (set to Bridge Mode). Wifi uses WPA2 Personal encryption.
My MacBook Pro as well as my dad's Dell laptop (Vista) can connect just fine and browse the web, no problemo.
However, my Mom's Acer Aspire One netbook (Win XP) keeps on saying "Acquiring network address" and kind of just hangs there. I've tried resetting the Airport Express to no avail. Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing this? I'm open to any suggestion guys, thanks!

I'll take a quick pass, but no guarantees as I'm not a PC guy.
XP, depending on the version installed on the Acer may not fully support WPA2 Encryption. Or, if it does, you may need to change some settings on the PC to use TKIP, not AES associated with WPA2.
It might be a bit easier to switch the security to WPA/WPA2 Personal on the AirPort Express and give that a try.
AirPort Utility > Manual Setup > Wireless Tab > Wireless Security.
The same TKIP/AES thing may still apply on the ACER though, so you'll need to investigate if things are still sticky on the ACER.
Finally, my PC friends tell me that 90% of all connection problems on a PC can be traced to the Firewall settings and/or anti-virus settings. You may have to go into the applications to specifically allow the connection to the Express.

  • I have bought a new airport express and using it with my macbook (iTunes 10.2.2). I have joined an existing network for internet in my home and with that i am trying to play the music via itunes but there is audio dropouts every 60 secs or so. any soln ?

I have bought a new airport express and using it with my macbook (iTunes 10.2.2). I have joined an existing wireless network for internet in my home and with that i am trying to play the music via itunes but there is audio dropouts every 60 secs or so. I am using a set of speakers from kenwood connected to the airport express. The operating system on my macbook is mac os X 10.5.8. i am sure it is not a problem of streaming music online because i have even tried playing music which are stored in my macbook.
Is there any problem with the setting in itunes or quicktime ? Kindly reply...... I am waiting for your valuable suggestion.
Thank you a lot in advance.

I am shocked to have found this same AX audio dropout problem starting TODAY, every few seconds the audio just drops for a couple seconds and then resumes:  Latest software versions of everything.  No iPad, iPhone or Touch.  Internet hardwired to D-Link DES1105 (1000baseT Switch) hardwired to new 80211N AX, AX optical to stereo, AX Wi-Fi internet to basic 1st-gen MacBook operating at 80211G, and an older 'G' AX extender at the far end of the house, away from all this.  The MacBook streaming iTunes is usually 12 feet from AX.  I've used this setup for years of trouble-free AirTunes / Airplay until today.  Today I also found 2 very reliable fixes and 1 way to force a dropout, but first, I read some posts and tried ALL following settings one-at-a-time and restored them ALL because NONE of them helped:  Turned off IPV6.  Streamed to multiple speakers 'Computer' and 'AX' (restored to just AX).  Turned off 'Ask to Join new (WiFi) Networks'.  Turned off Bluetooth (can't live without Magic Trackpad, so glad that wasn't it).  Here's my discoveries:  Lo and behold, each time I click the Airport icon in the Menu (you know it shows you've got 4 bars from AX) when the status switches to 'Looking for Networks' for a second it CAUSES the AX audio to drop out for a couple seconds (it never did that before today.)  iTunes still playing, streaming, AX laser still lit, but the 'PCM' light on stereo and the sound GOES OUT EVERY time I click the Airport icon in the menubar, just like the regular, annoying dropouts.  So, to reduce traffic I quit Safari (3 tabs, no streaming, just Gmail, Google, and Netflix browsing).  Lo and behold, the dropouts stopped altogether.  No other Web apps going (not iTunes Store, Genius, Ping, nothing), so I launched Chrome to the same 3 tabs and the dropouts HAVE NOT RETURNED.  That's right, not only did simply QUITTING SAFARI cure it, and Chrome doesn't contribute to it, but I can demonstrate it just by forcing my Airport to re-scan.  Works for me, written using Chrome.  The other reliable fix is to hardwire MacBook to the Switch.  This is obviously not ideal, but Airplay audio doesn't drop out over Ethernet.  Also, in all my tests, it made no difference whether iTunes did the streaming, or Airfoil did.

  • Airport Express - Ethernet jack

    Hi
Does anyone know if the airport express' ethernet port outputs to devices as well as receives.
Ideally I need to convert my current 802.11n time capsule signal back to a ethernet device (a AV component) that does not have wifi capability.
Is this possible? Could I connect my airport express near the device and connect them up using ethernet - would this connect my device (via ethernet) to my internet signal?
    Thanks

If you have the 802.11g AirPort Express (AX), you will need to configure the AX and Time Capsule to wirelessly connect using WDS. In this mode the AX's Ethernet port will be active.
If you have the brand new 802.11n AX you can either use the new 802.11n "extend network" feature OR WDS to wirelessly connect the two.

  • Airport Express Ethernet Port for XBOX

    Please could somebody help me!!!
I have the new Airport Extreme in my home office running an 80211n network. It is also connected by one of its ethernet ports to my first airport express providing my home with an 80211g network for our older powerbooks.
I have a second Airport Express in my living room which is plugged into my Sony Receiver for use with airtunes.
Question - we have just got an XBOX. It is located in the living room next to the second Airport Express. I want to plug the xbox into the LAN port on the airport express so that the XBOX can access the internet. Please could somebody explain how I do this. (I do not have the wireless adapter for the XBOX).
    Many thanks!

Thanks for the help. I followed your directions and the info in the linked page. Everything appeared to configure correctly. However, the xbox still does not get a connection. The xbox is connected to the 2nd AX using an ethernet cable. Am I meant to somehow tell this AX to allow its single WAN port to act as a LAN port? Or is this meant to be automatic? Also, do I need to set this AX to distribute IPs... or will the 1st AX do that? In other words how does the xbox get an IP. Any other ideas???
I am really grateful for any help you can offer...

  • Airport with third party wireless router?

Will Airport Extreme units play well with third party routers? I have Verizon FIOS and would like to use my Airport Extreme base station and Airport Express unit on my home network. I have successfully set up Airport Express in my office as a WDS. Can Airport Extreme base station be set up as part of a WDS?
    Thanks for any insights.

Will Airport Extreme units play well with third party routers?
No industry-wide standard exists for WDS, so it is impossible to predict how Apple's implementation of it (or anyone else's for that matter) will interface with other equipment.
Wikipedia has a short but fairly comprehensive list of third party equipment that allegedly support WDS. Missing from the list is a Linksys access point, which I nonetheless successfully configured as a WDS remote station. They call it "repeater mode".
    Yes Verizon FiOS is absent.

  • Airport Express and Linksys bridge, HELP!!!

    Hello,
I was just wondering if it was possible to use a Linksys router as a primary wireless access point and using the Airport express to bridge/ extend the wireless network?
If so, what are the steps that i must take to make it happen?
Would i be able to thus use the airport express' ethernet connection cable to connect to my xbox 360, in effect, turning the Airport express into an expensive wireless ethernet adapter?
    Thanks in advance...
    Ian

    Thanks a lot...
Just one last question though, would i be able to use the ethernet cable from the airport express and connect it to let's say, an xbox 360, will the airport express work as a wireless ethernet adapter now?

  • Using Airport Express to bring up the speed of wireless to n with a/b/g devices

I have an old computer my wife will not give up for whatever reason.   It's slowing the entire household network down with it's a/b/g card.  I turned off her wifi and used a cat 5e cable to connect to the Airport Express set to extend a signal.  I've found my wireless works MUCH faster.  I hope this helps you!

Yes, I kind of thought that but didn't know why.
Could you explain 'cause I'm trying very hard to
    understand Networks.
An Airport Express can be configured to extend a wireless network wirelessly using WDS (wireless distribution system) which effectively receives the signal from a main base station and broadcasts it again.
You can only use an Airport Express in this way with a main base station which supports Apple's implementation of WDS.
    You can do this with
    - another Airport Express
    - an Airport Extreme Base Station
    - a Linksys WRT54G or WRT54GS (not v5)
    - a Belkin Belkin F5D7230-4 and F5D7231
    - one specific model from SMC (can't find model number right now)
    - one specific model from Buffalo
For wireless routers not on this short list - not possible.
In particular, it will not work with any WiFi routers from D-Link or Netgear.
    Also, can you suggest an
    alternative?
    You have two options.
Purchase an Apple main base station (and sell the D-Link)
Connect the Airport Express to the D-Link by cable and extend the network in that way (known as a roaming network).

  • Airport Express as wifi card for Xbox Live, then connect to Extreme network

My son just got xbox Live and we're trying to use Airport Express as wifi card for xbox (connected to xbox via ethernet). We use Airport Extreme as router for the house.
We're having trouble setting up Xbox Live, keep getting stuck at getting the xbox to communicate/access the web. Error reads "can't obtain IP address from router... make sure DHCP is enabled and has a large enough address range for all devices on network.. also make sure MAC filtering allows your console's MAC address or is disabled... "
We dont' know what else to do. I'm at wit's end before giving Gates $100... Anyone know how to get connected?
    Thank you!

You can also perform a simple test to verify if you have an internet connection at the ethernet port on the AirPort Express.
Move a laptop near the Express, turn off the wireless on the laptop, and connect to the Express using an ethernet cable. See if you can open your browser and get a good solid internet connection.
If you can, the Express is setup correctly and you know that you have an internet connection reaching all the way to the Xbox.
If you can't then there is a configuration error somewhere and it will need to be identified and corrected.

  • Time Capsule & Airport Express as a bridge

I am using a Time Capsule as my wireless router upstairs, and I would like to set up an Airport Express as a bridge so that I can connect my Xbox 360 to my network (to play Xbox Live and stream Netflix and iTunes, etc.). Do I have to do something to the Time Capsule to get this to work? Or can I just use a laptop downstairs (where the Xbox is) to configure the Airport Express as a bridge? I looked in the manual settings of the Time Capsule but all I see is for it to extend a network, not to allow anything else to extend the network it's already creating.

+In the Airport Utility they are both configured to "Join a wireless network" and have checked the box to "Allow Ethernet clients". Very stable connection.+
Not sure if you were aware that you have the option to configure the AXs to "extend a wireless network" as well. The ethernet port is also active in the "extend" configuration. If you need more wireless coverage, this is a nice feature of the AX(n).
Then again, if you don't need the additional wireless coverage and things are working well as you indicate, you might want to just leave things alone.

  • Airport Express as an end point on a wireless network and connect a computer via the ethernet port?

Can I use my Airport Express as an end point on a wireless network and connect a computer via the ethernet port? - I'm wanting to connect a computer that does not have wireless and is in another building.

The requirements for this to work are:
    1) The AirPort Express must be the 802.11"n" version. Model Number is A1264
    2) There must be adequate wireless signal stength where the Express will be located
    3) The Express must be configured to "join" the wireless network with the option checked to activate the Ethernet port
