Airport Express: Extend a network and do Airtunes at the same time?

Hi, I'm trying to organize the people in my apartment building to share an internet connection wirelessly.
The connection is originating from a friend's apartment; he has a Linksys router, probably "g" flavor.
We're going to put one Airport Express in a neighbor's apartment to extend that.
I have an Airport Express connected to my stereo which I use only for Airtunes.
So I'm wondering: can I connect my Airport Express to this network and extend it and ALSO use it for Airtunes?
Also: Can I prevent my neighbors from seeing my Airport Express for Airtunes purposes? IE, I don't want my stereo to show up in the "multiple speakers" drop down of iTunes for other people connecting to the network...
Hope there's a way to work this out...

can I connect my Airport Express to this network and extend it and ALSO use it for Airtunes?
In order to extend the wireless range of the Linksys router, you would have to configure your AX and the Linksys in a Wireless Distribution System (WDS). Unfortunately, very few non-AirPort router are WDS-compatible. The few Linksys models that are reported to be compatible are the WRT54G & WRT54GS.
If you can create a WDS, streaming iTunes should not be a problem.
Also: Can I prevent my neighbors from seeing my Airport Express for Airtunes purposes? IE, I don't want my stereo to show up in the "multiple speakers" drop down of iTunes for other people connecting to the network...
No, but you can establish an iTunes Speaker password so they would not be able to stream to it.

  • Airport Express to extend network and stream music at the same time?

Hi. I have an Airport Extreme base station (primary wireless access point) and an Airport Express. Currently I connect my Hi-Fi to the Airport Express and stream music from iTunes, but I would like to also make use of its Ethernet port to connect other wired devices to my network. Is this possible; can it be used for both simultaneously? I've tried various configurations but not managed to achieve this.

    Welcome to the discussions!
If you have an AirPort Extreme(n) and AirPort Express(n), the ethernet port for the Express will be active if you "Enable ethernet client" during setup using AirPort Utility.
It sounds like you have either the "g" version of the Extreme or Express or both. Both devices must be "n" capable to use this option. If you don't see an option on the Wireless setup page of the Express to "Enable ethernet client", you have a "g" Express and this function is not available with your device.

  • Connecting to wireless network *and* another computer at the same time?

    Hi,
I will be getting a new macbook soon and have an old powerbook with airport. I am wondering if it is possible to connect to my old powerbook via airport, while still being connected to a third-party wireless internet connection (from the macbook). The crucial point is that I cannot connect both computers to the wireless network, because subscription is based on the computer's hardware address and I don't want to pay for 2 computers (I don't need to have internet access on the old computer, just a connection between the two computers). Anyone knows?
    Thanks!

What you are referring to is known as "Internet Sharing" for Macs, but it's typically restricted to sharing the Internet connection from one port (either AirPort or Ethernet) to the OTHER port...not AirPort-to-AirPort or Ethernet-to-Ethernet.

  • Can't connect Airport Express wirelessly to network so that AirTunes and internet are available simultaneously

I can't connect Airport Express wirelessly to network so that AirTunes and internet are available simultaneously.  My old AE allowed this but can't make the new one work that way.

In your instructions, you say to use the same encryption type as the router has set up. well, I am using the WEP 64 bit encryption and the Airport Utility does not have this...it has 40 bit. Is this a problem, or do I have to be using a the same type of encrytion ?
WEP is available in either 40 or 104-bit, but is usually "advertised" as either 64- or 128-bit respectively. For example, 64-bit WEP uses a 40 bit key (also known as WEP-40), which is concatenated with a 24-bit initialization vector (IV) to form the 64-bit RC4 traffic key. So, WEP 64 on the Linksys & 40-bit is equivalent.
What concerns me more is the loss of bandwidth performance you are experiencing when connecting the AX. When the AX is configured as a wireless client it is acting just like any other wireless devices (computer, laptop, printer, etc.) and not like another router. This should cause little or no bandwidth loss. True the more secure the wireless encryption used WPA2 vs. WEP, the more overhead is required for security, but the differences you are seeing seem excessive.
It is very possible that you may have some form of Wi-Fi interference in the immediate area that is preventing your Linksys from providing a good clean signal.
I suggest you perform a simple site survey, using utilities like the following to determine potential areas of interference, and then, try to either eliminate or significantly reduce them where possible:
    For Macs:
    o MacStumbler
    o iStumbler, or
    For PCs:
    o NetStumbler

  • Airport Express extends 5 Ghz and 2.4 Ghz or just one at a time?

I recently switched my dual band Time Capsule to use different names for the 5 Ghz and 2.4 Ghz networks.
Will the Airport Express extend both or just one at a time, if so, which one will it extend?
I have two Airport Express modules, bought a long time apart, is there any difference in functionality and how do I tell them apart if this is the case?
All are running the most recent firmware version.

Welcome to the discussion area, Mike!
Will the Airport Express extend both or just one at a time, if so, which one will it extend?
The AirPort Express is a single band device, so it can extend either the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz band, +but not both at the same time+. Since you have different names for the 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz bands, the Express will extend the 2.4 GHz band by default. Using AirPort Utility, the setup application for the AirPorts, it is possible to configure the AirPort Express to extend either band.
If you are perhaps thinking of extending the 5 GHz band, this can be a bit tricky because 5 GHZ signals do not travel effectively over distance or penetrate obstructions as well as 2.4 GHz signals. You almost have to have a line-of-sight relationship between the Time Capsule and the AirPort Express to be able to extend the 5 GHz band.
I have two Airport Express modules, bought a long time apart, is there any difference in functionality and how do I tell them apart if this is the case?
Look on the side of the AirPort Express for the model number in the small print. You'll need Model No A 1264 to be able to "extend". If you have the older Model No A 1084, that version will not be able to "extend" a wireless network, but you could use it to "join" the wireless network and stream AirTunes to the device.
All are running the most recent firmware version.
That would be 7.5.2. If you have the older version of the AirPort Express, the latest firmware version for that device would be 6.3.

  • HT4437 can i play songs from my ipad to my airport express and Ihome speaker at the same time?

can i play songs from the ipad to both the airport express and ihome speaker at the same time?

    Let's double-check your AX's settings...
To set up AirTunes on the AirPort Express Base Station (AX), using the AirPort Admin Utility, connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then, try these settings:
    AirPort tab
    - Base Station Name: <whatever you wish or use the default>
    - Wireless Mode: Join an Existing Wireless Network (Wireless Client)
    - Wireless Network: <select your Belkin wireless network>
    Music tab
    - Enable AirTunes on this base station (checked)
    - Enable AirTunes over the Ethernet port (optional)
    - iTunes Speaker Name: <whatever you wish>
    - iTunes Speaker Password (optional)
    In iTunes:
    iTunes > Preferences... > Advanced > General
    - Look for remote speakers connected with AirTunes (checked)

  • Airtunes - Analog and Digital output at the same time?

    Howdy,
This may seem strange to ask, but can the Airport Express output audio in digital and analog formats at the same time? Is there a strange splitter cable that could do this for me?
I recently learned that most AV receivers with digital inputs cannot output digital sources to their analog zone 2 outputs. The usual work-around is to connect their digital sources to the receiver by both analog and digital cables.
    Mikael

I just learned the same thing. Does connecting the digital and analog connections to your reciever work ? Did you connect them to the same source or assign different sources for each? Thanks,

  • Time Capsule and 2 macbook at the same time

    Hello,
I have a time capsule and 2 macbooks.
Therefore, when my macbook is doing a backup ( every hour), my collegue cannot acces to internet, and cannot backup at the same time.
But it looks like this problem is only one way ( I mean when my collegues backup, I don't have any trouble to go on internet).
Anyone can help? cause it's really annoying.
    Thanks

    Ngarraud,
    Try this:
    *Multicast Rate / Transmit Power*
    Launch Airport Utility.
Select your Time Capsule on the left.
    Click "Manual Setup".
Select "Airport" from the toolbar at the top.
    Click the "Wireless" tab.
    Click the "Wireless Options..." button.
Check the setting for "Multicast Rate".
This setting controls the range at which you allow devices to access your network. Lower is better if you want access throughout the house. But this setting won't improve speed. Tesserax has a nice explanation of this setting in the following quote:
+"The Multicast Rate option sets the threshold throughput level a wireless client must obtain in order to be "accepted" by the base station. The lower this value, theoretically, the greater number of clients that can connect, especially those at greater distances from the base station. At the opposite end, the higher this number, only those wireless clients that can achieve the higher throughput value will be able to connect.+ [http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6736587]
Next, verify that your "Transmit Power: is set to 100%.
*Interference Robustness / Use Wide Channels*
Finally, ensure that "Interference Robustness" is checked (For certain network configurations this setting will say "Use Wide Channels. Verify that it is checked nonetheless.)
Help Doc states: +"You may experience network performance problems if a microwave oven or other source of interference is used frequently near your base station or Time Capsule. To help minimize interference, turn on interference robustness."+
Let us know if this was helpful.
    Cheers!

  • Connecting Micro USB and HDMI cables at the same time

I need to be able to use a Micro USB and HDMI cable at the same time to configure ATV to connect to WPA2-Enterprise secure WiFi network.  I'm using Apple Configurator to do this.  Because of the poor hardware design, it isn't possible to connect both the Micro USB and HDMI cables at the same time.  Does anyone have a worrkaround to resolving this issue?
I saw a similar post about this problem in the forums dating back to April 2013 with no real solution.  It's been over a year now and I'm hoping someone has found a workaround to this problem.  I have a bunch of ATVs that I need to configure for our classrooms.
    Thanks!

  • L2 OOB and L3 OOB at the same time

Can you run L2 OOB and L3 OOB at the same time?
I have a core 6509 and it is trunked to access layer switches “ 4506 and 2960s”.
The problem is that I am installing a 3845 router” off the 6509” to act as a hub for crypto tunnels. The spokes will be 2821 routers with 2960 switch on its own subnet that requires routing not L2.
Could someone provide a good example of configuration? Most confused with the CAS.
In the above need do I have E0 and E1 in different VLANS with different IP's.
    Using a 10.x.x.x /24 private address network.

Yes you can run layer 2 and layer 3 in other words client adjacency is 0 hops from cas in respect to the 6509 and multi hops in respect to the 2960 switches at the remotes.
Unfortunately its not as simple as providing you a working config getting this set up is usually a 1 week process for most cisco partners.

  • Can you use Time Capsule on a windows and 2 macs at the same time.

Can you use Time Capsule on a windows and 2 macs at the same time as either a backup for one and a seperate HD drive for two?

    Yes.
From one viewpoint the Time Capsule is just NAS (Networked Attached Storage) and it supports the file sharing protocols necessary for both Windows and Macs.
From the viewpoint of the Macs it can also be used by Time Machine for backups.
As NAS it can be used for storing files, and there are many backup software packages that support NAS on both Windows and Macs.
In addition from a networking point of view it can serve as a router, wireless access point etc.

  • Bash script: Rotate your wallpaper and SLiM theme at the same time

    EDIT;
I've decided I should really thank Cerebral for his help with writing this script; this thank you should have been here from the get go.
    After writing:
    #!/usr/bin
    echo "Hello World!"
I wrote a script to rotate my fluxbox background and SLiM theme at the same time, so I could have a contiuously changing background and still have a smooth transition from SLiM to fluxbox.  (It just looks so much cooler when both have matching backgrounds).  By the time you finish reading it, and configuring your box so it will work, you will probably have decided you could have writtin your own, better script to do the same thing.  But, on the off chance anybody finds use for it, here it is:
(this should be obvious, but: don't run this script without at least reading the comments)
    #!/bin/bash
#this is a script to rotate a number of backgrounds
#to be shared by the fluxbox desktop and SLiM login manager.
#it is the first meaningful script I've written. It may be
#freely distributed and used with the understanding that you are
#using it at your own risk.
#Before running this script you need to check that your SLiM
#themes are installed to the path /usr/share/slim/themes, which
#is the defulat path for installation in Arch. Here are some
#other things you need to set up:
#1. create (if you don't have it) the directory /usr/share/wallpapers
#2. create a wallpaper in /usr/share/wallpapers called 'dummy' by copying
#you current wallpaper to that filename
#3. set your window manager to display the wallpaper 'dummy', this works fine
#using a style overlay in fluxbox, I haven't tested it with any other window
#manager, but I don't see why this would cause a problem.
#4. create a directory /usr/share/slim/themes/current, you can copy one of
#your slim themes into that directory if you want. (this will prevent you
#from seeing some error messages the first time you run the script)
#5. define the names of the themes you want to rotate, in order for this
#script to work, you must name them "themeNUMBER", where NUMBER is replaced
#by an integer. Your themes must be numbered consecutively, start with 1
    # that is:
    #theme1 , theme2, theme3, etc. , theme305
#If you don't number consecutively, this script will not run properly. You
#must also define the total number of themes as "rotate_number"
#6. Check if the script runs, if it does, you should change /etc/slim.conf to
    #use the theme "current"
#7. This theme will now rotate your SLiM theme and wallpaper in such a way as
#to make them match each other. Note that SLiM will not let you change themes
#"on the fly", (as of July 6, 2008), so changes will not be apparent unless you
#restart SLiM. I run the script before I run slim in my etc/rc.local local
#script, so each time I reboot I get different wallpaper / login background.
