Airport Express Faliure to Setup

Hi Mac heads.
I'm hoping you can help me with my airport express setup. All I'd like to do is use it to run music to my stereo system.
I'm trying to connect to a 3rd party router (linksys wrt54g) which is running WPA personal with a hex password. I go through the setup assistant and everything works fine until the last reboot of the airport express. It says it's waiting for it to reboot but it doesn't. Once airport express reboots it goes to its kiss of death orange flashing light. There are no errors. Any ideas? Is it due to the security on the network. Thanks.

First, welcome to the discussions.
See if this link will help you.

  • Airport Express Problems w/Setup Assistant

My old Airport Express died yesterday. I got a new one tonight, but I can't make it connect to the internet. Ran through Airport Utility a few times; kept getting message that device can't get an IP address.
Computer connects OK (via PPPoE) when I connect the ethernet cable directly. Two computers connect wirelessly (via the Express) to each other. So I'm confident that the modem and both computers are functioning normally.
Called Verizon (my DSL provider), went through utility again, still no luck. He asked me to go to Airport Setup Assistant, but when I click on it, I get an error that says assistant can't help me with this Airport device. Message says to download proper assistant from Apple site, but I can't find whatever it is I need.
Another note: he says I need to select DHCP options for Express. As I said above, when I connect the ethernet cable directly to my iBook, I have to connect to the internet via PPPoE. Could this be part of the problem?
    Please help....

So, you're telling me that I need to somehow configure the AX for PPPoE, and then configure my computer(s) for DHCP?
    Yes.
For the AX, you configure PPPoE as follows:
Either connect to the AX's wireless network, or temporarily, connect directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then, using the AirPort Utility (in Manual Setup), configure the following settings:
    Internet - Internet Connection
    o Connect Using: PPPoE
    o Username: <enter your PPPoE username>
    o Password: <enter your PPPoE password>
    o Verify Password: <re-enter your PPPoE password>
    Internet - PPPoE
    o Connection: Always On
    o DNS Server(s): (optional)
    o Domain Name: (optional)

  • AirPort Express with PC -- Setup Problems

    Hi
Just wanted to share my experience -- I wasted most of a day getting my AirPort Express network up. Problem was, the setup software assumes that you have a wireless card in your PC. If, like me, you have a simple ethernet connection to a wireless router, then the program apparently has no way of finding the AirPort Express.
After hours of fumbling with suggestions on this forum, I finally found the tech support number and we figured out that I needed to run the setup program on my laptop, which does have a wireless card.
I would STRONGLY encourage Apple to re-write its setup software to recognize this very common hardware configuration and work with it, lest more customers waste more of their time. I was THIS CLOSE to angrily returning the box. Now that it's up, I really love it, but I almost didn't get there.

Airport Express   Windows XP   No wireless card -- ethernet connection to wireless router

I had the same problem as you did with the setup of the AX from a PC connected to the router by Ethernet. I was able to run the setup by using the "Other ..." button at the bottom of the Base Station Chooser and giving it the IP address of the AX.
Does iTunes on the PC connected to the router by Ethernet find the AX? It doesn't for me. It works great from my other 3 PCs that are connected to the network by wireless. Of course, the PC with the problem is the one across the family room from the stereo ...

  • Airport Express fails during setup.  Airport Utility doesn't find device, blinking amber light.

I bought an Airport Express Model A1392.  It is connected to my cable modem with an ethernet cable.  The cable ethernet works fine when plugged directly into my computer.
I open my Airport Utility on my Mac and no device is found.  I've tried resetting and powering off my modem and the AE.  Any other thoughts, is this a bum product?

fixed it myself: hard reset and setting my AirPort's wireless settings to 100% power did the trick.

  • Airport Express 802.11g Setup with iOS Airport Utility

I'm traveling with just an Airport Express 802.11g model and my iPad mini. I want to change the settings on the Airport Express but the Airport Utility for iOS says this base station isn't supported. Do I have any options available to me to change the settings on the road without a computer?

Yeah, that's what I gathered. Question is, do I have any alternate means of configuring it? For example, a web interface.

  • Airport Express Base Station Setup problem

My new Airport Express Base Station (2nd generation) does not sense the internet using an ethernet cable.  The status light is green.  I am using a hotel's DSL system in Brazil.  When using the same cable, and connecting my laptop directly to the system, it senses the internet just fine, so I know it isn't the cable or the hotel.  Does anyone know of compatibility problems with this Airport model?

Does the DSL service require PPPoE for authentication before allowing you Internet access? If so, then the device directly connected to the DSL modem would need to be configured as such.

  • Airport Express & Apple TV Setup Problems

I am having some strange problems with my network. First, I reset my Airport Express and went through the steps of connecting it to stream music, however, the Airport Utility will not recognize it after restarting (I can do a hard reset and it will find the unit, but then hangs up over and over at the same point).
Also, at the same time, my Apple TV is showing in iTunes, can stream music and movies, but is not showing in the Airport Utility and will not sync.
I am not sure what I might have changed...any ideas

I am on 10.5.8. When I do a hard reset the airport Express, the computer finds it, however, after going through the steps to add it to my network to stream iTunes, it restarts and the computer can't find it (light continuously blinks amber).
The AppleTV is showing in my iTunes, but NOT in my list of wireless devices and it won't sync. So it does stream movies and music, just won't sync. When I try and sync it, I get a firewall error, but I have my firewall settings to allow all incoming devices.
Should I just reset everything and try and start over?

  • How do you hook up multiple non-mac computers to an Airport Express?

I have hooked up my airport express and it works for my computer and only my computer. I cannot get the other 2 computers in the house (which are both pcs)to go further than verifying the ip address when trying to log onto the internet. Please help!!

Hello JamieLG. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
First, let's double-check your AirPort Express Base Station's (AX) settings...
AirPort Express Base Station Setup (AX) w/High-Speed Cable Modem
    Setup the AX
Connect to the AX's wireless network, and then, using the AirPort Admin Utility, check these settings:
    AirPort tab
o Base Station Name: <whatever you wish or use the default>
o AirPort Network Name: <whatever you wish or use the default>
o Create a closed network (unchecked)
o Wireless Security: <your current wireless security setting: None, WEP, or WPA>
    o Channel: Automatic
    o Mode: 802.11b/g Compatible
    Internet tab
    o Connect Using: Ethernet
    o Configure: Using DHCP
    o WAN Ethernet Port: Automatic
    Network tab
    o Distribute IP addresses (checked)
o Share a single IP address (using DHCP & NAT) (enabled)
If you have wireless security enabled, which type is it: WEP, WPA, or WPA2?

  • I want to set up my Apple Airport Express router to gain access to Unblockus. How do I do that?

Does anyone know how to set up the Airport Express router to gain access to Unblockus.
Unblockus has provided me the Preferred and Alternate DNS server numbers. I just dont
know how to configure the Airport Express router to accomodate this DNS address.
Also I dont want to negate the DNS address I already use to gain access to my internet service
    provider, when I do this.
    Help....

    I just dont
know how to configure the Airport Express router to accomodate this DNS address
Caution......This will overwrite any existing values that you have in the DNS Server boxes. There is no way to keep your existing DNS numbers if you enter new DNS numbers.
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
    Click on the AirPort Express
    Click Manual Setup
Click the Internet icon at the top of the AirPort Utility window
    Click the TCP/IP tab
Enter the Primary and Secondary DNS numbers in the DNS Server boxes
Click Update to save the new settings

  • Airport express printing problem with Snow Leopard

I am no longer able to print to my shared printer after upgrading to Snow Leopard. I get a message that starts with "communication failure the computer is no longer able to communicate with your printer". My network consists of a dual-band Airport extreme and an Airport Express. The dual-band Airport Extreme creates the network and is connected to the internet. The printer (HP LaserJet 1012) is connected to the AirPort Express. The AirPort express joins the dual-band Airport extreme network for the sole purpose of turning the HP LaserJet 1012 into a shared wireless printer. Everything was working fine before the upgrade to Snow Leopard. When I connect the printer directly to my MAC via USB, it prints fine. I can "see" the printer fine through bonjour when it is connected to the AirPort express, but I get a failure whenever I try to print to it. I have tried plugging and unplugging the device. I have effectively redownloaded the print-driver by connecting the printer directly to my MAC. It sounds like a Snow Leopard bug. Any suggestions for a work-around? Thanks.

I upgraded to Snow Leopard and had difficulties connecting to my HP Photosmart 7150 printer through Airport Express. Apple setup found a 3rd party printer driver by Gutenprint, which I downloaded and the printer works. But like it did under Leopard. Under the 10.5 OS, a print command would send a wake up signal to the HP, which automatically turned off after a period of idleness, and then print. Under 10.6, there is no wake up and I need to manually activate the printer. I went to the HP web site hoping to find a "new" driver for 10.6 and HP has posted a message saying it does not and will not be providing print driver for 10.6. It then has a long list of HP devices that cannot or will not print with Snow Leopard. So those with no-printing issues should check your model against the HP driver listing. I believe this is a neat way for HP to force Mac users who upgrade or install 10.6 to buy a new printer for which HP has a 10.6 driver. At least I can print and the only inconvenience that I can see if the lack of that wake up signal. My wife says it won't hurt me if I have to get up and walk to the room with the printer to turn it on!

I am trying to connect my wireless capable Samsung BuRay Disc Player to my Airport Express Network. The Samsung keeps telling me to check my IP Address, DNS Server, Gateway etc. I have tried to set it up using the auto option and using the manual option. Neither is working. Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
I looked at a manual for a Samsung Bluray Disc player. They seem to have left out an important capability: the ability to choose a wireless network and supply its password.
You may be able to use the WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) capability, although that is said to be tricky between Apple and non-Apple equipment. Use AirPort Utility to put your AirPort Express into "manual setup" mode. Invoke the menu option Base Station -> Add Wireless Clients. Then follow the player's instructions for "PBC (WPS)". Use the AirPort Utility option "First attempt". The AirPort Express' status light will turn blue while it waits for a connection from the player.
I have no direct experience with this. All the above information came from the electronic book "Take Control of Your 802.11n AirPort Network" (http://www.takecontrolbooks.com/airport-n).
I have no relationship with Take Control Books other than that of a customer.

  • Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 and an Airport Express

Hello. I would like to know if the Airport Express can be setup "easily" as a WDS bridge to a wireless network that is coming from a Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 wireless smartrouter. I see that both support WDS. Is there a doc anywhere that might help me to configure this setup?
    Thanks.

Is it possible to use it as some sort of a "repeater"?
Apple's "extend" function was designed to only work with other Apple devices, so it would be extremely unlikely that the Buffalo router coulld be configured to extend the AirPort network using wireless only.
There is no harm in trying, though. Check the documentation for the Buffalo router to configure it to act as a "repeater" or "extender".
There are no settings to adjust on the AirPort. It is up to the Buffalo router to join the Express wireless network and then repeat or extend the signal.

  • Airport network - multiple Macs + Airport Express/Airtunes

Hello all - I am in need of some advice on how to correctly setup a home network.
We have an Extreme base station (one of the older dome shaped ones) connected to our DSL modem - from this we operate 1 G4 Powerbook, 1 G5 iMac, 1 Intel iMac, 2 iPhones. All can currently access wireless internet with no problems. I am trying to add my old model Airport Express to this setup so that I can use Airtunes from the 2 iMacs - specifically so that we can use the iPhone Remote App to control the music coming though our living room stereo.
I have managed to set it up so that I can use Airtunes from the Intel iMac, but it seems that i have to disconnect from the base station network to do so - i.e. I can either have internet on my iMac or Airtunes, but not both - as a result I cannot use the Remote App on my iPhone to control the music.
I obviously have the network set up incorrectly - what do I need to do? Do I need to startover with the whole network design?

Here are the basic steps for configuring the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) for AirTunes ...
Perform a "factory default" reset of the AX
    o (ref: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108044)
To set up AirTunes on the AX, either connect to the AX's wireless network or temporarily connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then, use the AirPort Admin Utility to check these settings:
    AirPort tab
o Base Station Name: <whatever you wish or use the default>
o Wireless Mode: Join an Existing Wireless Network (Wireless Client)
o Wireless Network: <select the existing wireless network>
    Music tab
o Enable AirTunes on this base station (checked)
o Enable AirTunes over the Ethernet port (optional)
    o iTunes Speaker Name: <whatever you wish>
    o iTunes Speaker Password (optional)
    In iTunes:
    iTunes > Preferences... > Advanced > General
o Look for remote speakers connected with AirTunes (checked)

  • Multiple airport express airtunes problem

    Hi,
I have my wireless network setup, using my AirPort Extreme with 802.11n to create the wireless network, then i have a new AirPort Express (with 802.11n) and an old AirPort Express (not 802.11n).
The two additional AirPort Expresses i have setup to connect to the wireless network, they all look fine and return the green light - but my problem is, that i am only able to select the new AirPort Express in my iTunes (as external speekers) - i can not get it to show me the old AirPort Express
It is kindof sad, now my old AirPort Express is useless - the point was that i should be able to have them both as external audio targets for my iTunes...
I hope you guys can help me.
    Kind regards,
    Rasmus Burkal, Denmark

    Hi again Bob,
Just one thing i find "funny" - you know, in the AirPort tool, you can go and change the settings of a AirPort device. If I go to the "new" Express, I can change the "name" of the iTunes speakers (the name that apear in my iTunes drop-down) - but when I try to do that at the "old" Express, when I click update - I gives me a warning - saying something like "not supported by this wireless apple device" (even though the setting is avalible from the AirPort tool)
    All the best,
    Rasmus

  • MBA 13 (late 2020) and older Airport Express

Visiting a friend where I have installed an Airport Express way back and where I usually connect my MacBook generations, I found that my new MBA would not connect.
First, "cannot find any preferred network"
When selecting the adequate network, with the password from Keychain, I get "connection timeout"
Quitting, after some retries, I don't see my network at all.
Turning Airport off and then on again, I can again see my Network, but same procedure, even when I type the password instead of letting Keychain provide it.
Airport Utility coud not find the Airport Express, until connected via Ethernet and resetting the Airport Express would not help.
And - all the while my iPhone 4 worked wonderfully with the network through the same Airport Express...
Is there a version requirement for Airport Express when it comes to the latest MBA?
    Thanks for any input.

I just brought home my new 13 inch Macbook Air, and have been having horrible problems with the airport express. My setup is as follows:
Airport Extreme base station in the lower level.
Airport Express setup to extend the network on the main level, and plugged into audio system.
Airport Express setup to extend the network on the upper level with USB printer attached
Both Airport express are about a year old.
This has been working great with my 2 year old macbook pro and various iDevices for quite some time.
Now, the Macbook air will connect, but it gets horrible throughput, and it only keeps the connection alive for about 10 minutes before all network traffic stops. I can still see that it has an IP address, and normally renewing the DHCP lease will get me another 10 minutes. Sometimes I need to turn AirPort Off/On to get going again. I think I've been seeing a very similar problems with the pre-release iOS 4.2. Just upgraded to the released 4.2.1 so who knows...
Finally, in desperation I unplugged both Airport Express and have just been using the extreme, I get great speed and the connection has been completely reliable.
Any ideas on what might be causing the problems with the airport express??
    Thanks
