Airport Express for music streaming, but not Internet?

I currently connect my PowerMac G5 to the Internet via a direct connection. How do I setup the A/E to stream music from my PowerMac G5 (Airport equipped), without disrupting the existing Ethernet connection?

If you want your G5 to be on the Internet AND stream music at the same time, the AirPort Express (AX) must be connected to your Internet source. The G5 can not use the Ethernet connection for Internet and the AirPort connection for streaming music at the same time.
If you have a wired router but do not have a wireless router, you could connect both the G5 and AX to the wired router.
If you do not have a router of any kind (other than the AX), you could connect AX to the ISP connection and then have the G5 wirelessly connect to the AX.
OR you could connect a wireless router to the ISP connection and then have the G5 and AX wirelessly connect to the router. Alternatively the G5 could be connected to the wireless router via Ethernet.

  • New AppleTV or Airport Express for music streaming to Receiver

    Hello,
I am wondering if it would be better to get a new AppleTV for streaming music to my AV Receiver than my my trusty Airport Express (n). I have always used ethernet cable to link the AExp to the computer and an optical cable for the audio link to the Onkyo 875 AV Receiver.
I was recommending the AExp to a friend yesterday and had say "Hold On!" as I was not sure if the AExp was the best choice anymore, given that the new ATV costs the same price and does video too via HDMI. My main interest is audio, but video is a welcome bonus. All my music is in Apple Lossless format.
Appreciate some feedback to help decide on the best solution.
    Regards, Jim.

I don't think the audio quality can be worse (esp. from Apple Lossless), perhaps only better if you are running a HDMI cable from the ATV to the AV Receivers input port (I hope this is the case! Anyone know for sure?). The receiver should have a good DAC, but I believe the ATV (and AE) would use it's own DAC.
I must say the AE has been a wonderful device and people are still amazed after all these years that ALL my music that resides on the computer can be played wirelessly (wired in my case with a 20m long ethernet cable) from our HiFi speakers.
Trust me, the DAC on the AE is nowhere near the quality of CD. All of my Apple Lossless was getting converted with the AE DAC and going to my analog receiver. It sounded tinny, all the mid-range and upper range seemed to be compressed or something, and there was no bass response. Seriously, with a mediocre analog receiver and some affordable but good speakers, you can get incredible sound from a CD. But the AE sounded horrible compared to that. That's why I got rid of the analog receiver and bought a receiver with a DAC. However... the quality hasn't even improved that much, even with using the toslink and comparing to simple 1/8" jack to RCA. I'm pretty disappointed.
This is why I want to know if the AppleTV is literally going to have a better DAC than the AE. That's the only way I can see it sounding better. Either that or getting a separate DAC (because I can't afford a nice digital receiver, they're just too expensive).

  • Love airport express for music throughout the house but it goes dead from time to time

Airport Express for music just goes dead
is there a quick fix to this

You don't really want 2 wireless networks. After you get the Linksys set up, you will want to configure the AirPort Express (AX) to join the wireless network created by the Linksys base station. You will then have one wireless network that provides Internet and wireless music streaming.
Use the directions in KB 302153, AirPort Express: How to join an existing wireless network in client mode to configure the AX.

  • Airport Express works with Skype but not with internet

    Hi,
I recently bought some new Airport Express' for my company. However, when plugging it in we seemingly get full access, but only Skype seems to work. If I do a search on the internet it can sometimes look like it find the address after a long while, but don't manage to open the page. E.g. writing www.google.com in the search field doesn't give access to that page.
I brought them home to check if the Airports worked there, and they did. No problem. But at the office the Airports don't. If I connect the same plug which is connected to the Airport into the MAC / PC, then I have full connection to the internet.
    What to do?

After Grant pointed out the DNS thing, I started to check that part, and I noticed something funny. I called Apple Support regarding the problem, and now it's solved
    Here is my experience:
    1. My Airports worked fine when home, but not at work.
    2. Checking the LAN DNS addresses I received three addresses. 2 in the 158.xx... range and one in the 129.xxx... range.
    3. The Airport Extreme and Airport Express does only support two DNS addresses, and since the two 158.xx... DNS addresses came first in that range the 129.xxx... was left out.
    4. I manually changed one of the 158.xx... addresses to the 129.xxx... address I got on my MAC / PC when I connected directly to the wall and did a "ipconfig /all" on the PC. The three same addresses is listed under network - airport on the MAC.
    5. Now suddenly it all worked. This due to that the two 158.xx... addresses seamed to be internal addresses, and the 129.xxx... address was from outside delivered from our operator.
    Summarized:
When you receive 3 DNS addresses you MAC and PC can handle it fine, but your Airport not. Find all your DNS addresses and write them down. Enter Airport Admin Utility and do a manual setup. Change one of the two equal address to the third address. Most probably listed as the last DNS address when you are connected directly and type e.g. "ipconfig /all" on your PC or you enter the network settings.
    Best regards,
    Bouw

  • Airport express only music streaming

    Good morning,
I just want to you use airport express for streaming music conneting a receiver and my mac pro book.
I don´t wanna go into the internet.
    What to do?
I´m using a fritzbox 3270 for internet, phone, etc.
    Thanks in advance.
    Michael

You basically have two choices and they are dependent on whether or not you want to "switch" wireless networks between accessing the Internet and streaming.
The AirPort Express can be used standalone, meaning that you do not need to connect it to a network or the Internet in order for it to provide a Wi-Fi network for streaming. However, if you do so, you will (again) have to switch which wireless network you will connect to in order to do so.
If this works for you, then I can provide the set up instructions.

  • Airport Express shows green light but NO Internet

I am using a Macbook Pro and an Airport Express for my Wi-Fi.
I have recently changed my Internet Service Provider. The new ISP provided me with the following information:
    1.IP address: 172.100.11.17
    2. Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
    3. Default Gateway:172.100.11.1
    4. Preferred DNS: 172.16.0.1
    5. Alternate DNS: 8.8.8.8
My ISP told me to enter this information manually unlike my previous ISP who used DHCP.
I entered this information by going to system preferences >> Network >> Advanced  >> TCP/IP >> Configure IPv4: Using Manually. I also entered the preferred and alternate DNS information under DNS servers in DNS tab.
I applied these settings and the airport express shows solid green light but gives NO access to internet.
I have also tried connecting the Ethernet cable directly to the computer, which also shows connected but gives NO access to Internet.
I borrowed another router from my friend (not apple) and entered the same settings given by my new ISP and boom !!! I got connected to the internet  only through wirelessly BUT no connection again using the ethernet.
So I am facing the following problem in Mac OS X (10.7.5)
    using
    Airport Express: NO internet
    Ethernet: NO internet
Other Router(non-apple): Internet works using Wi-fi
    Ethernet: NO internet
I do not know if something is blocking the connection or what is happening. I have created new locations (under network) and deleted the old existing one's but nothing seems to help. I also did a hard reset of my Airport Express but nothing seems to help.
    Please help me !!!

I am using a Macbook Pro and an Airport Express for my Wi-Fi.

    5. Alternate DNS: 8.8.8.8
I am able to connect to the internet now directly using ethernet cable but my airport express wouldn't let me connect.
I must be doing something wrong with entering settings in Airport Express. The ISP technician is as clueless as me and had even did some changes under Wi-Fi in the network section on my macbook pro. I dont know if it is causing these problems. I have a few questions, please help.
Q1. While entering the ISP provided details using Airport Utility, which of these should I choose: A. Static B. DHCP C. PPPoE ?
Q2. Should my MAC address in the Airport Utility be set to configure manually or automatically ?
Q3. What should be my Wi-Fi settings in my computer ?. I mean in system preferences under network, should my TCP/IP set as DHCP or manually ? Under hardware tab, there is an option to select MAC address as either Automatically or Manually. What should it be ?
    Please Help !!!

  • Airport Express USB Printer Visible, but Not Printing

I've connected my printer (HPc7260) to my Airport Express. It is visible on the network. But print jobs get stopped and the print utility says the printer is offline.
    Any thoughts?
+This question is also posted in follow up to a thread I started earlier, which was answered helpfully by Duane (thread: How Setup Airport Express for Wireless Printing to HP Photosmart C7280) Sorry for redundancy and clutter. I hadn't followed up on the old thread for a few days. Thought it might not get another response.+

    Solved.
A restart, followed by reselecting the printer in the print dialog got the job done.

  • Time capsule and Airport Express for music and internet

Hello! I have a time capsule and an airport express. I use the time capsule for back up, extra space (music) and internet connection. Then I use the airport express to play my music wirelessly (it is attached to my speakers via an amp). This set-up used to work fine but not any more... I can play music via the
Airport Express but then I won't have internet, or I have an internet connection via my Time Capsule but then the Airport Express has to be removed. It seems like the Airport Express overrules the Time Capsule when it comes to internet connection, and obviously (as there is no ethernet cable connected to it) that doesn't work. But somehow I can't select the Time Capsule network any more.  What am I doing wrong, what happened? I have spent hours searching the internet to find the solution but so far no good. Please help! Thanking you very much!

just leave the TC on it is designed for that.

  • Music streams but no internet connectivity and a question about a poss. fix

Forgive me if this question has been answered already (searched the forums for two hours and found none that were answered). Where I work there are two wireless networks, set up completely separate from one another using Linksys WRT54G routers. I've set up my Express to join one of the networks, (let's call it Network "A"). I chose this one because it's closer, signal is stronger and when I tried Network "B", streamed music would crackle out regularly.
Lately though I find that my internet connectivity disappears on Network "A" while music continues to stream flawlessly (airport signal shows full strength). I reset the Express, restart my computer, nothing seems to fix it outside of leaving for the night and coming back the next day. I switch to the other network, no problems with the internet, but streaming music becomes problematic. So here are my questions:
    1. Anyone have advice on how I can fix the internet connectivity problem on Network "A"?
    2. Failing that, does anyone know if it's possible to set up my express in such a way where it's only being used for streaming music (without joining or extending a wireless network) and then also connect my computer via wireless to either network for internet access? Wired access is not an option here unfortunately...
Again, sorry if this question has been answered somewhere else.

    1. Anyone have advice on how I can fix the internet connectivity problem on Network "A"?
When joining an existing network with the AirPort Express Base Station (AX), the AX is acting no different than you laptop connecting to that same wireless network. If there is connectivity problems with this network, both the AX and your laptop should "see" the same problems.
It is very possible that you may have some form of Wi-Fi interference in the immediate area that is preventing your Mac from getting a good clean signal from the Linksys router.
I suggest you perform a simple site survey, using utilities like MacStumbler or iStumbler to determine potential areas of interference, and then, try to either eliminate or significantly reduce them where possible.
    2. Failing that, does anyone know if it's possible to set up my express in such a way where it's only being used for streaming music (without joining or extending a wireless network) and then also connect my computer via wireless to either network for internet access? Wired access is not an option here unfortunately...
The only other option would be to configure the AX to be its own wireless network. The disadvantage of this would be that you would have to "switch" wireless networks in order to either stream audio or access the Internet.

  • Airport Express prints from Vista but not Leopard

I have an airport express (G model, not N) which I've started to use as a print server. I'm using a Samsung ML-2510 printer. Everything worked just fine about yesterday, but today I'm finding that the Airport Express will only print from windows vista. On my wired macs nothing happens and it sometimes tells me the printer is busy, when it's not. On my wireless mac, an iBook, it tells me the printer is offline.
I can print from mac using a D-Link print server, but not from my airport express. Windows Vista has absolutely no problem with airport express. I find this a little odd.
Is there any way to fix this? I don't even know how it broke. I would like my airport express to work with my macs again.

Thanks for your reply- just to re focus my problem- I
have no issue with getting a wireless network "green
    light"
Which is the cable modem correctly giving the Express an IP from your ISP's DHCP pool of numbers.
    - my issue is I can't stream itunes or get a
usb printer to work off the xpress USB port.
I have checked everything as my posts explain- The
reason I have been looking at this thread is I have
never been able to see the airport in a "scan" per
    JDee post.
That is odd and doesn't happen on my wireless network!
Nor have I read in any post that an extra
    ip address is necessary
All routers have at least two IP's - an external and an internal. When the router acts as an internal DHCP server it hands out many more IP's. Your Express gets one external IP and the default internal one is set to 10.0.1.1 and the first IP handed out is 10.0.1.2, etc.
However I have seen different subnets- from dncp
    server.
Are you talking about the external IP's that your ISP is randomly assigning without your control? Are you talking about the different ways you can configure the internal DHCP numbers? If not there's something else going on. Everything on Douglas internal network should have an IP from the Express DHCP server vs. JDee's internal IP's should all be assigned by the modem/router DHCP server. Once you have everything on the same network numbers AirTunes, printers, and Airport Admin Utility lists just work!
Hey look I really appreciate your help here in
anyway- I'm really stumped. I want to stream music
really bad... and just don't see why it won't work-
    its drving me crazy...
I enjoy a good challenge, especially when they are solvable. After trying all the possible software and connection possibilities there's always the chance it's been a hardware failure all along
What IP number does your computer have and what number does the Express have? If it's a router it has two IP's!

  • Airport Express Shows in WAN, but not Wireless

I have an old Airport Express and a Time Machine (and Powerbook 13" 2011 model ... OSX 10.8.2). I have been using the TM fine for quite some time now. I used to use the AE, but packed it away for the last two years. Having just gotten a new stereo, I would like to play music via the AE again, as I used to.
However now I cannot get the AE to show up in Airport Utility. If I plug it in by Ethernet, it shows up fine and plays music. But the moment I unplug the Ethernet, I lose connection. I have tried to configure as Extend a Network and Join a Network, and the same thing happens with both ... music plays fine with plugged in, but cannot get a signal with wireless. AE does not show up at all on AU on wireless. Resetting the AE has no effect. The AE light is solid green the whole time.
I suspect I am doing something really basically wrong and dumb, but cannot figure it out at all. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    ok here's an update.
now my airport express turns to green automatically (only in my room)
it will still be blinking amber anywhere else
so the problem is still not solved.

  • Airport Express for Airtunes Apple TV Only - Internet Through Ethernet

I just upgraded to faster internet and when I connect my computer directly though the ethernet it's world's faster than the Airport Express I have. I cannot update my Express since my MacBook Pro won't do 801.1n. I want to use the AE just for Airtunes and AppleTV, but when I turn on the AE it seems to disable the direct internet connect via ethernet. Is there a way I can have my laptop wired to the internet and still use AE for Airtunes and AppleTV?

I just upgraded to faster internet and when I connect my computer directly though the ethernet it's world's faster than the Airport Express I have.
I assume that you mean that you connect your MBP directly to the new Internet modem by Ethernet ... correct? If so, then the bandwidth of this Ethernet connection is at least twice as much as the maximum provided by the 802.11g AirPort Express Base Station (AX) ... which would be 54 Mbps.
I want to use the AE just for Airtunes and AppleTV, but when I turn on the AE it seems to disable the direct internet connect via ethernet. Is there a way I can have my laptop wired to the internet and still use AE for Airtunes and AppleTV?
Most likely this is because your MBP's network configuration has the AirPort connection at the top of its list, followed by Ethernet. If this is the case, your MBP will attempt to connect to the networking device in order of that listing.
Unfortunately, if you are connecting your MBP directly to the modem, the AX will represent "another" network ... and you would have to "switch" networks between Internet access and streaming.
    You have a few options:
o Get an 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn); connect the AEBSn to the modem, and in turn, connect your MBP to the AEBSn by Ethernet. The AX could then "join" the wireless network, created by the AEBSn, for streaming.
o Replace the current AX with the 802.11n version. In addition, get an 802.11n USB wireless adapter for the MBP.

  • Airport express working on mac but not on pc

My airport express works wonderfully on my Macbook Pro, but I would also like my PC to connect to the same network. I have tried everything that I have found online, and the PC will not recognize or "find" the airport network. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Ok, thanks for the additional info.
    I suggest trying the following:
o Temporarily disable the WPA/WPA2 Personal wireless encryption, and then, check to see if any of the XP devices can now access the network/Internet?
o If they can't then, while the encryption is still disabled, change the radio mode on the AX to a non-"n" one, like "802.11g only." You can access this mode, by holding down the <Option> (Mac) or <Control> (PC) key prior to selecting the mode within the AirPort Utility. Can they access the network/Internet now?

  • One Time Capsule & Two Airport Express for Range Extension but will my time capsule hard drive be accessible to all the user on network ?

I am planning to buy 2TB time capsule which is [2TB hard drive + Airport Extreme] and two Airport Express to extend the range of my wifi network. we have a large family & because of that we have 1 macbook, 2 laptops , 2 desktops, 4 iphones, 2 ipads, 3 android phones, 2 apple tvs, 2 ps3's. all of these devices are on my Wifi network but some of them are off usually ps3, apple tv and desktops computers r off but still their is alot of traffic. Now i am buying this 2TB time capsule instead of Airport Extreme so that i can save money by getting 2TB hard drive for me only & not the whole family so i want to know if i can keep the hard drive private & at the same time i want to share my internet connection with all of these devices which belongs to my family members, will this be okay ? and they wont be able to access my hard drive ? & will i be able to access my hard drive if i m connected to any of those two airport express & not the main time capsule. indirectly i will be connected to time capsule by using airport expresses in client mode correct me if i am wrong

You can use TC with whatever wireless you currently have.. if it works you should not need to buy a pair of express as well. The best method is to bridge the TC and plug it into the main router.
You can certainly keep it private for your own access only.. simply set a disk password only you know. Easy.
As long as you have a single network, then wherever you connect in the network will be able to access the TC.. but also note file speeds to the TC with multiple wireless hops will be terrible slow.
Also note all security on the TC is an illusion. It is a home device.. press reset and anybody can then access it. You can even get past disk password. If you want security keep the device off the network.. use an external hard disk plugged directly into the computer.
