Airport Express - green blinking light, every second. doesn't power up

I've tried resetting it, it doesn't react to it. I've tried leaving it without power for a while, it's the old one, got it around 2003 I think, has it reached its burrial time or is there something I can do to fix it?

But since it does sort of "power up" and gives me an error, I should be able to do something about it?
Not if an internal electronic component itself is defective, which is likely the case. And, even if you could find the component on the circuit board, I doubt that you could replace it easily.
I have seen close tolerance internal connections work loose due to internal heat expansion issues over time, but as I said.....it is a real longshot.
If it were me, I would replace an 8 year old device, but it might be fun to poke around inside the device if you have the time.

Unfortunately, green blinking is usually a symptom of an internal electrical problem on the AirPort Express.
Try a Factory Default Reset as a last resort:
    Power down the Express
    Wait ai few minutes
Hold in the reset button first, and keep holding it in for an additional 9-10 seconds while you simultaneously plug it back in to power
Release the reset button after the hold period and allow a full minute for the Express to restart.
You want to see a slow blinking amber light at this point, indicating that the Express has been reset to factory defaults. You can reconfigure it again now.
If you try the Factory Default Reset a few times and this does not help, I am afraid that the Express is defective and will need to be replaced.

  • Airport Express Green Light - Can't Get To Internet

    Hello.
I'm staying at a friends cottage. Their internet works fine (I can connect via ethernet to the internet). I can get the wireless network to work fine using Airport Express (green light on AX, shows network signal in menu bar).
When I try and connect to the internet via AX it fails.
I am using WPA2 Personal for the password.
    Am I missing something simple?
    Thanks in advance.
Hello... I tried to find this before I asked, but I couldn't narrow the search enough to find an answer... I'm sorry if this has been asked a lot before.

I am connected directly from the back of the modem to the ethernet on the AX.
So you're replacing the friends' equipment (if any) with your AX? Some questions:
    1) Did you remove power from the modem for several minutes before you connected your AX? Some modems will refuse to connect to a "new" device until they're reset by that process.
    2) How is your AX configured? Settings in AirPort Utility of particular interest are AirPort panel, Wireless tab, Wireless Mode and Internet panel, Internet Connection tab, Connection Sharing.

  • Printer working but airport express is blinking amber

Hi. I configured my computer to print using the airport express and it is printing. However, the airport express is blinking amber. Does anyone know why and how to fix it so it is green?
    Thanks!!!

I have read other posts that say to go to airport admin utility and check what the issue is (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305101). the post says to install software that came with airport extreme - i don't have the airport extreme base station, only the airport express. so i'm not sure how to resolve the blinking amber light.
any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • Shuffle stops playing occasionally, 5 green blinking lights

    hi,
my 4th generation ipod shuffle occasionally stops playing a song, seemingly caused by a minor movement of the shuffle or the headphones.  when this happens, the indicator light blinks green exactly 5 times.  the behavior is otherwise like clicking pause (which blinks green 30 times) in that clicking play again fixes the problem.  it happens pretty commonly when running, though some days it never behaves this way and other days it shuts off almost constantly.  putting the shuffle into lock mode doesn't help.  it also seems unrelated to the battery level.
it's behaved this way for some time though i'm past my coverage period.  anyone else encountered this and/or know a fix?  i've already got the latest iTunes and shuffle software installed.
    thanks.

I tried the cotton swab approach from http://techtips.salon.com/ipod-pause-itself-3299.html.  I took a Q-Tip, ripped off most of the cotton, dipped the Q-Tip in rubbing alcohol, and cleaned out the ipod shaft and the headphone jack.  You could tell it was lubricated when I put in the headphone jack, as it swiveled pretty easily.  After doing this, I had no playback problems.  Where before a slight movement of the headphone jack would stop playback, now I was unable to stop playback short of removing the headphone jack completely.
I also was pleased to discover that the 5 green blinking lights are exactly what happens if during playback you remove the headphone jack completely.  So that's consistent with some type of connectivity problem between the ipod and headphones.
Sadly, later that day, after leaving the headphones connected to the ipod for a few hours (turned off), I found I was back in my initial state where a slight movement of the headphones turns off playback.  I really thought I had found the permanent solution, but it seems like I might be routinely using rubbing alcohol and a cotton swab to make the ipod work normally.

  • My Apple Airport Express is blinking Amber and I cannot find it with the utility

My Apple Airport Express is blinking Amber and I cannot find it with the utility

Hi, had the same problem -
    1) Connected AE to Time Capsule with Ethernet cable - Configured it  - All worked fine
    2) Removed Ethernet cable between AE og TC - All worked fine
    3) Unpluged my AE from the socket outlet (power off) and pluged it inn where its supposed to be (2m from my Time Capsule)
    4) Now Airport Utility do not find me AE (after all i reconfigured through the Etheret calbe) ????
    A) Seems that Airport Utility are not able to "see" any wireless AE, only configurable by Ethernet Cable.
    B) Seems that AE are not able to reconnect to configured network after a power loss.
This is a little bit ****** - older airport utility had none of the problems (A and B)

  • On my second Airport Express in 3 months and still doesn't work!

I bought an airport express 3 months ago and it worked perfectly just up until a few days ago. I went thru all the possible fixes and hard resets, changed cables, re-located the airport etc. And all failed leaving me with a blinking amber light. I went to the store that I bought the airport from and they tried hooking it up on their system and they got the same result. They told me I would have to go thru apple to get it looked over. I have a home business and needed this unit to work that day as I depend on the internet. So I said screw it and bought another airport express, got it back to the office and guess what? Yup it also doesn't work either. So what can I derive from this, is it my set up? It worked without any changes to the settings for three months. Is it the unit? It doesn't work in my office or at the shop I bought it from. Any suggestions before I buy another brand.

Ok here is what I suggest:
    1. Reset the ISP modem, most can be done by simply pulling the power on the unit and waiting about 10 seconds then plug back in
    2. Reset the Express to factory defaults:
Use pen or paper clip to press and hold the reset button for 10 seconds.
    3. Open Airport Utility (Do not use the assistant at this time) and set up with the following settings.
    Airport
    Base Station Tab
    - keep all defaults
    Wireless Tab
Wireless Mode - Create a wireless Network and keep all else default
    -Keep all others default
    Access Tab
MAC Address Access Control - Not Enabled
    Internet
    Internet Connection Tab
    Connect Using - Ethernet
    Configure IPv4 - Using DHCP
    Ethernet WAN Port - Automatic
Connection Sharing - Share a public IP Address
    DHCP Tab
DHCP Beginning Address - 172.16.1.200 These addresses are simply examples and default.
    DHCP Ending Address - 172.16.1.210
    -Keep all others default
    NAT Tab
    -Keep all defaults
Do not set up any security options at this time, wait until you get the Express operating then you can start to set up WEP, WPA etc. Security
Once you have all these settings configured the press update and wait for the Express to reboot. If you still have a Blinking Orange light then I recommend contacting the ISP and make sure that they have the Expresses MAC address in the data base. Most ISP's will require the MAC address of the unit they are giving an IP address to.
Or you can try to reset the Express by unplugging the Express then while using a pen or paper clip press and hold the reset button while you plug the Express into the AC outlet. Then try setting up the configuration as above.

  • Airport Express Green Light but No Wireless Connection

I would be grateful for any help on an issue that has been driving me crazy! I have spent countless hours trying countless solutions. My wireless network is set up as such: Time Capsule serving as a Base Station, Airport Extreme, 1 Airport Express downstairs in dining room, 1 Airport Express upstairs landing, and 1 Airport Express in the bedroom. All are new, 802.11n. Time Capsule is configured as Create a Wireless Network/Allow This Network to be Extended. All other devices are configured as Extend a Wireless Network/Allow Wireless Clients. All device lights are green. The Time Capsule and Extreme produce a signal and have strong wireless connectivity. The expresses, though green, do not receive a signal and I cannot connect with laptop/iPhone etc. I have tried pretty much everything including changing the channels on the Time Capsule - basically ran through 10 of them with no difference. The Extreme relays strong wireless signal to the upper landing, but the Express - though showing green - simply does not put out a signal. Getting desperate here as have great wireless interest downstairs, but nothing upstairs no matter what I try. Any ideas MOST welcome. (ps...all firmware is up to date)

Kinda have a similar problem. Hijacking it.
Everything's up to date. About 1 year old.
Modem to AXp via Ethernet, AXp set to create a wireless network, shows greenlight.
Modem is a Motorola SB6120. Probably isn't relevant but let's mention it just to be sure.
Alu Macbook detects AXp. In Airport Utility, when I right-click Identify, it says orange/green flickering light. However, the state is greenlighted and it says that it's normal.
All of my devices detect and can connect to my network. It seems everything's working alright except that none can access Internet.
Internet works fine when I directly connect my modem to my Macbook and when I reset the former (which, according to what I read here and there, is fine).
Everything (Macbook, iPod Touch, Wii) was working fine until yesterday afternoon, and nothing since then. Tried resetting the AXp, cycle everything (unplug all, plug in modem, AXp and boot Macbook, in that order) and it didn't work.
Whether it's set to be distributing IP adresses to be sharing a public IP adress, it doesn't work.
I can click on renew lease, I can reboot my devices, same results.
So, where do I go from here? Just so you know, I know next to nothing about network stuff. Thanks in advance and here's the mandatory "sorry for my horrible english".

  • Airport express Green light on, itunes transmitting, internet not working

    Hi,
I have a thinkpad running XP and a cable/telephony modem from comcast. I installed the airport express following the directions and got a blinking amber light and no functioning internet or airtunes. I then took down the IP address, router address, etc (IP Address: 66.30.116.41 Subnet Mask: 255.255.248.0 Default Gateway: 66.30.112.1
DHCP Server: 68.87.71.8 DNS Servers: 68.87.71.226, 68.87.73.242) from my modem and manually configured those settings into my airport express, and now I have a green light and am able to transmit itunes but can't access the internet. My computer connects to the network but then I can't load any pages. When I try "repair," it fails when reconnecting to the network. The IP adress when I'm connected to AX begins with 10.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

no answer but same problem as yours. any news on your side ?

  • Airport Express - green light, no connection to net, but Windows cabled OK

    Hi all,
For 2 days I've been having a strange problem:
Suddenly I don't get a valid internet connection through my airport express (AX), although the whole setup has worked for 3 years.
I am connected that way: a DSL modem from my network provider is connected via ethernet cord to the AX. This opens a WPA2-encrypted network via PPPoE, and uses a MAC-Address filter.
So far, I have settled it down that way:
When working under Mac OS X (latest updates for Leopard are installed, the last one was a pure application update for notes, pages and keynote 2 days ago), I don't get a valid connection: Via AirPort it cannot find the PPPoE host, although the green light is solid visible. Via Ethernet-Cable I also don't get access to the PPPoE host.
Here comes the strange thing: When working under boot-camped Windows XP, setting up a network connection via Ethernet cord, it works! Obviously, when trying to connect wireless to the AX, a connection could be established, but there is no traffic possible.
Any suggestions or hel would be very much appreciated !
Could it be, that the last application updates for iWork had these effects? Would be too strange to believe..
    Thanks in advance,
    Andre
BTW: MacBook Pro, 10.5 Leopard with all system updates are installed. No custom firewall or such things.

    Hi Andre
I just had a similar thing happen to me where airport has been running fine for about a year and suddenly my iMac can't find the network although other wireless networks are found and our Wii, PS3 and PC notebook all connect. I contacted Apple and found that resetting the Airport Express was the only solution as it was originally set up on the Mac. The fact that it was picking up other wireless networks proved that there was nothing wrong with the wireless internals in the Mac.
So I factory reset the Airport Express by pressing the tiny button with a pen until it started flashing really quickly. Set it all up again on the Mac, then let the AE restart, then unplugged power from the wall for both the modem and AE for 20 seconds and reconnected.
It did the job for me - I hope it works for you.

  • Airport express, green light but not working.

while streaming music to airport express, it suddenly stops. Green light on AE, but connection with wireless net is gone. iPad airport express app tells that the AE was in a network and isn't anymore. Only way to get it back working is power off/on. Sounds familiar? Any tips what can be the issue?

Is the AirPort Express the only wireless router in your current network configuration or is it configured to "join" another wireless network for streaming. If there is another wireless router, where is the Express placed in relation to it ... same room, different room, different floor?
When streaming from your iPad, is it in the same room, different room, or different floor than the Express?

  • ITunes can't connect to my new Airport Express even when light is green and see it with Airport utility. Please help!

    Hi,
I'm using iTunes with my iMac and like listen the my music collection in my Hi-Fi which is 20 m far from the Mac. Because of the distance in my flat and other obstacles I'm using a power line. I installed the Airport Express through the Utility and no problems: Airport light is green and configured. iTunes air see it but it can't connect to it.
I made several resets, plugged and unplugged the power and no change, but Airport light is always green, see it in iTunes and the Utility.
    This is driving my crazy!
    Any ideas ?
    Thanks

    Hi Jim,
Thanks for reacting to my question.
Yes, I did reboot the router, unplugged and replugged the Airport Express with ro result .... iTunes cannot connect to the Airport Express. I'm using power line to carry Ethernet because between my Mac and AE there are about 20 meters, but problems started since I updated AE version to version 3 ...
It is also non sense because the Utility sees it and then suddenly disappears ! but light remians green ...
I think there might be something wrong with the new firmware versions ...
    Carlos

  • Brand New Airport Express-Green Light Wireless, Dead Green Wired

I just bought a brand-new airport express device. I have a cable modem connected to a dual band AirPort Extreme base station in my basement. My house is wired with Cat5 Ethernet cable. In a far bedroom, I am replacing an airport express-N (previous model) that was hard-wired to the Extreme. Always worked perfectly in extending and supplying 2.4ghz band wifi to that part of the house. I bought the brand-new AirPort Express to utilize the dual band bridge.
After many hours of trying, this new airport express will only work properly if I do not plug in the Ethernet cable. It seems to be performing well, but i was under the impression that an ethernet cable should be used to physically connect the AirPort devices each other.
Currently, in this wireless setup, I do have both bands available. I feel that if I used the cable, I would have much stronger better signal.
Interestingly, when I do ether-connect the airport devices together. My AirPort Utility looses all of my AirPort devices and shows (with a yellow dot) that my Internet (modem) is not available. At the same time, all of my AirPort devices continue to show a green light. I am unable to connect anything with any of my wireless devices.
Also, when everything seems to be working fine, my AirPort Utility does depict the wireless set up with a dashed line between the two AirPort devices representing that it is wireless connection.
With my last AirPort Express, a wireless set did extend the range, but only while slowing everything down. An ethernet cable, when introduced, made everything work perfectly, during which time the AirPort Utility depicted that setup with all solid line indicating wired connectivity.
I would appreciate any feedback from anyone who might be able to tell me why when I introducing ethernet to the new AirPort Express, it takes down the entire wireless network.
Hi, of course, try all of the normal troubleshooting suggestions. I recycled all devices I have rebooted everything.

It's always a good idea to do a complete power recycle when switching out network components ...
Try the following, in order, checking for Internet access after each step, until resolved:
    1. If the modem has a reset switch, use it to reset the modem. Wait at least 5-10 minutes for the modem to initialize.
    2. Remove power from the modem. If it has a backup battery, remove this as well. Wait 5-10 minutes. Replace the battery, and add power back to the modem.
    3. Perform a complete power recycle of your network components as follows:
    Modem/Router Power Recycling - Quick
o Power-off the modem, 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn), & computer(s); Wait at least 5 minutes.
o Power-on the modem; Wait at least 5 minutes.
o Power-on the AEBSn; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    o Power-on the computer(s)
If this fails to get the modem to "recognize" the Internet router, then try the "Full" version.
    Modem/Router Power ReCycling - Full
o Power-off the modem, AEBSn, & computer(s). (Wait at least 30 minutes. If possible, leave the modem off overnight.)
o Power-on the modem; Wait at least 15 minutes.
o Power-on the AEBSn; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    o Power-on the computer(s)
    4. Contact your ISP to have them perform a "modem reset."
