Airport Express Guest Network

This could be an Apple Airport hardware issue but wanted to double check I haven't made a mistake in setup or if anyone else has experienced this fault. We have Sky Broadband Unlimited installed running through a Sky Hub with Apple Airport Running an additional Wireless network, primarily for the 'Guest Network' feature. When enabling the guest network, we are able to broadcast the signal however the device trying to connect is unable to complete connection. I'm half confident that it could be an issue relating to the Airport requiring two IP addresses. One for the standard 'full access' signal and the other for an 'Internet Only Access' Guest Network, however it is only given one IP via DHCP on Sky Hub. My immediate thought is to set the Airport to allocate IP Addresses as opposed to the Sky Hub. Any thoughts anyone?

I was able to get the guest facility of the AirPort Extreme to work by double NATing, but it leads to all sorts of other issues with complex environments. If yours s a simple LAN/wifi environment then switch the Airport Express to route instead of bridging and leave the Sky Hub with the same default settings. But if you have ports forwarded or games consoles this isn't recommended. I noticed you put a like on my other post concerning switching on the wifi on the Sky router with wifi isolation enabled and using that for your guests; this is also a good solution to the issue.

  • Apple Airport Express guest network not really secure?

I've setup several of these devices and they work quite well but I setup the guest network on one and it's in the 172.X.X.X range and the local network is actually on the 192.X.X.X network. If I go to Start and Run and type in \\server it doesn't work but if I do \\192.168.1.2 it asks for the server credentials and allows someone to pull data! That's not a true "guest" network! Is this expected and normal? Do I need to return this device to the store and use something that actually protects the internal network?

It is not actually expected and normal. The guest network should be on a separate vlan to the main network. So even if you can get connection without wireless credentials the only access should be to the internet.
Tell us a bit more of the setup.
What is the main router? Is it setup to isolate vlans?
What about the switch.. again if it is managed or not and how are vlan setup?
What you might find is the Express is designed to work with the Extreme and in extend wireless mode where the network is correctly vlan isolated.
Have you tried another brand of wireless AP, with a guest mode.. because this might actually be a problem of the main router.. as it should not allow access.
I am not saying the Express are perfect by any means.. and people do occasionally report guest network functioning when it should not be.
What is model and firmware they are running.. ?
Are they plugged into the network by ethernet and setup in bridge.. then create a wireless network? Is it setup for roaming rather than extend or have you mixed them??
In the case where you use them in roaming.. the guest network should not work unless there is an airport extreme running as main router to provide vlan support.. or you have a managed switch.

my ibook G3 OSX 10.2.8, airport admin utility software 3.1.1 no longer can detect the airport express wireless network (powerbook G4, OSX 10.4.11, airport admin utility 4.2; airport express, WEP protected, to DSL modem). i just installed an ipod driver update on the ibook, and wireless networking went down on restart. any help greatly appreciated!

This isn't harmful, because it is only a preference list, so it will be created brandnew as soon as you re-setup the Airport stuff.
Mac OS X ( especially Jaguar ) has a tendency to corrupt some plists out of the blue, it is more or less harmless and can be fixed with recreating them plus permissions-repair.

  • PCs suddenly no longer see Airport Express wireless network - please help!

    Hi,
I am new to this forum and I need help. Two days ago - without me making any changes to settings etc. my Airport Express wireless network at home was no longer visible to any of my devices except to the Powerbook (G4 OS 10.3.9) which controls it. From one second to the next two Vista laptops and my cell phone (Nokia, Symbian OS).
My Powerbook has no problem connecting through AE to the internet. The two laptops are both able to connect to other wireless networks so they don't seem to be the problem. I just don't understand what caused this sudden drop-off/invisibility.
I have already tried the following: resetting the base station, changing the channel on the base station (from automatic) removing the network security altogether (from WPA2). But none of the devices except the powerbook can now see or detect my network.
Please - if anyone knows what the cause of this problem could be or how to fix I would be very grateful!!

  • Airport Express WiFi network MAC address filtering not working

I have an Airport Express WiFi network which I bought and installed new in 2011. Initially I enabled MAC address access control and populated a list. It was working perfectly, I know, because a niece visiting tried to connect her iPhone and could not until  I added its MAC address to the allowed list. Now however, anyone can connect without being added to the list. I think I read somewhere that a recent firmware update permanently disabled MAC filtering in Airport Express, even when it was previously working? Can anyone enlighten me about what's going on here?

In a sense those are/were/should operate as two separate functions, which they did before recently.
They do operate as two separate functions.....but it all depends on how you have the default rule setup in Timed Access.
If the default rule in Timed Access is set to No Access.......then a wireless device cannot connect....even it has the password for the network.....unless it has been setup on the list of allowed devices in Timed Access.
I have checked this 3 times this evening to verify. It works as it always has, and as expected.
If the default rule in Timed Access is set to Unlimited, then any device can connect to the network if it has the password. Devices that are listed or specified in Timed Access will be allowed to connect at the specific times that have been set up for each device.
So, if you want to use the more traditional MAC Access Control settings, the default rule has to be set to No Access and then you must set up a rule for each device that you want to allow to connect to the network. Only devices on the Timed Access list will be allowed to connect to the network. Other devices will not be able to connect to the network....even if they have the correct password.
If a recent firmware update has changed things from what they have always been.....then I am not affected....and I should be if I am using the same firmware as others.

  • I enabled the guest network feature on my time capsule.  Can I configure my airport extremes guest network feature if I use this as a network extender using a "roaming" network?

I enabled the guest network feature on my TC.  Can I configure my airport extremes guest network feature if I use the extreme as a network extender connecting my Airport Extreme to my TC via ethernet cable?

Unfortunately no, since the AirPort Extreme should be configured in Bridge Mode if it is connecting to the Time Capsule using an Ethernet connection.
The Guest Network option cannot be enabled when the AirPort is configured in Bridge Mode.
Another way of saying the same thing is that the Guest Network cannot be "extended" either by using an Ethernet connection or wireless. It is only available from the Time Capsule "main" wireless router on your network, not any extending devices.

  • When attempting  to set a password on my Airport Extreme guest network i get this "Advertising a service globally using Bonjour requires a global hostname." What can i do to set password on this network?

When attempting to set a password on my Airport Extreme Guest Network i get this "Advertising a service globally using Bonjour requires a global hostname." What does it mean. Or what i need to do to correct it.

When trying to troubleshoot my problem I discovered a forum that was saying certain NTFS drives work just fine
Apple support says that an NTFS or exFAT drive cannot be used when connected to the AirPort Extreme.
I suppose it is possible that someone might have been using some type of special software on the drive that might perform a "conversion", but without more details, it is hard to know.
Note: ExFAT and NTFS formats aren't supported.

  • Iphone will not connect to airport express extended network - macbook and ipad will - Help

Iphone will not connect to airport express extended network - macbook and ipad will without problems.
iphone will connect to base station no problems, I've restored settings and started again but still the same, the iphone picked up the network for the last couple of months, but not now ?

I'm having the same issue. My AExpress used to give a good signal strength on the far side of the house extending he network created by my Extreme. However, I've noticed lately that my iPhone does not receive the same strong signal it once did. AE has a green light, I've rebooted it, and my Extreme but there is no change in signal strength. Other than the green light, how can I tell if the Express is working if I don't get a good network signal?

  • Linking Dell Laptop to existing/working Airport Express wireless network

    Hi,
I'm trying to connect a Dell Laptop (Inspiron 2500) running on Windows XP to an existing and functionning Airport Express wireless network set up for my girlfriend's iBook. It works perfectly for the iBook.
I have outfitted the Dell with a D-Link wireless G USB adapter and I see the network (i have the password) and it says I am connected to the network (even says connection is very good).
However, when I open the internet browser, nothing.
The network set up is: Cable to RCA Digital modem (model DCM425) to Airport Express (via ethernet) and to computer.
I have tried playing around with the Dell Laptop settings (IP, DSN, etc ...) and I have called everyone involved (including Apple) to no avail.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Nick
    Dell Laptop   Windows XP   iBook

    Thanks for the reply.
WEP is enabled. As far as the encryption, I'm not sure. I believe that it's 64-bit, as the password for the network is a five-letter word.
The funny thing, though, is that I had been using an IP address which I found on my girlfriend's Ibook, which allowed me to connect to her AEBS network, although the internet browser showed no connection.
Following directions from somebody else, I removed the IP address to enable DHCP, and then I was able to connect to other networks in the area (and the browser also connected to the internet) but I couldn't get onto her network anymore. Even with the password ...
    Any ideas?
If i'm supposed to upgrade to 128-bit, how should I go about doing that?
    Thanks again for the reply.
    What encryption are you using?
    Do you have WEP enabled?
The problem you are having probably lies with the
    encryption key.

  • I use Airport Express to network 3 iMacs to a DSL modem.  Recently, the network became undiscoverable to one of the iMacs.  Suggestions for a fix?

I use Airport Express to network 3 iMacs to a DSL modem.  The network has become undiscoverable to one of the computers. I have reset the base station to factory settings but this does not help.  The other two computers are unaffected. All 3 computers can access the internet when connected directly to the modem.  I suspect the problem might be the Airport card?  Suggestions?
    beaucleo

Thx for the suggestion, although I didn't have to reset the SMC to fix the problem. The problem was the handshake between the security password and the designated network.  The following links gave me info for investigationg the problem.

I would recommend these web sites to anyone who is having problems setting up and/or maintaining a wifi system.
I discovered after reading one of the web references that if I disabled nework security the problem went away. This, however, was unacceptable.  Further experimentation showed that the solution to my problem was to change the name of my network while keeping the same password.  I tried only changing my password but that didn't help.  I still don't understand why only 1 of the 3 networked iMacs was affected.
Again, thx for your interest and reply.

  • Airport Base/Express - Guest Network

I have the lastest generation Airport Base station connected to 2 Airport Express stations in my house with a primary wireless and guest network.  I made a change to my guest network password on my base station, but the password change have not been pushed to the 2 Airport Express stations and the old password is still recognized on the Airport Expresses.  I have restarted both units, but the old guest network is still recognized.
I like to periodically change the guest network password and making the change on the base station should push any changes to express units automatically.
Has anyone else had this issuse and what is the resolution?
    Thanks
    Vijay

You might want to let Apple know what you would like to see in a future update.

In the meantime, you will need to manually change the password on each AirPort.

  • Time Capsule & Airport Express Extended Network loses connection!

OK, so I am an Apple virgin of 2 months experience, after many many years with Windows based PCs, so please be patient and gentle with me. Sorry about the long explanation.....
My set-up comprises of a Time Capsule, which is connected to the Internet via a NetGear ASDL modem. Both pieces of equipment are situated in my wife's office on the first floor of our house. My office is on the ground floor, where I have a 27" iMac and an Airport Express which is connected to a printer via the USB port. The Airport Express is sited about 10 feet from the iMac.
All software and firmware are lastest versions - TC v7.5, AX v7.4.2 & Airport Utility v5.5.
For the past 2 months, I have only been using the AX to print wirelessly and the set-up has worked faultlessly.
Earlier this week, I decided change the configuration to extend the network to allow me to use my laptop & iPhone in areas of the ground floor where I had no signal. I followed the online instructions and first changed the TC to check the box to 'allow this network to be extended', after updating the configuration successfully I moved to the AX. Here I changed the wireless mode to 'Extend a wireless network', selected the network name and checked the 'Allow wireless clients' box. This also updated successfully.
Everything ran correctly and the range of the network was greatly increased.......great, job done...not!
After about 3 hours the iMac lost the connection and the TC disappeared from the Airport Utility pane and refused to reappear. I checked but also couldn't connect or see any network on the laptop or iPhone, so have dismissed a fault with the iMac. I finally got things back up after doing a power reset of the TC, but after a few hours same problem occurred, and occurred and occurred. By clicking the Airport Utility icon on the top right of the screen and following the prompts from 'no Internet connection', I can at least get things up and working without a power reset of the TC, but the connection still drops after 2-5 hours each time.
My first call to Apple Support led to a full reset and re-config of both the TC and AX, setting the extended network up as I had done originally. The only difference was an iMac reset (alt/cmd P&R on power up) and changing the 2.4Ghz channel from 1 to 11. This had no affect and the connection drop-out problem continued.
My second call to Apple Support led to me being passed to a Level 2 Techie, who first suggested that I tried disabling the Guest Network - tried it, and it made no difference. I was then told to try a WDS network, which whilst not losing connection, is slower and has less range than the original extended network and frankly sounds a cop-out.
Has anyone had a similar problem, anyone solved the problems, can anyone offer any help or advice please.. I'd appreciate any input....thanks.

Similar problem here. Cable Modem (Moto SB6120)->AEBS (802.11n dual-band)>AX (802.11n) for wireless connection to MacBook Pro running Mac OS X 10.6.2. AEBS configured as dual-band: 801.11a/n at 5GHZ and 801.11b/g/n at 2.4 GHZ. AX configured to wirelessly extend the AEBS 5GHz 802.11a/n network. I am able to run on the extended 5GHz network (via AX) for varying lengths of time, until the internet connection dies. When this occurs, I am able to switch over to the 2.4GHz network to get back online. Solution up until now has been to unplug the AX, then plug it back in. After the AX restarts, I am able to hop back onto its 5GHz signal and get to the internet. However, the internet connection on this band will drop again after some time.
I was on the phone with Apple Support twice in the past week to get this resolved, but no joy. Senior Advisor seemed to think that my AX was working properly, and that that the problem could be with my AEBS -- perhaps the 5GHz antenna might be bad in my AEBS? Seems odd to me, since both my AEBS and AX are less than 2 months old...
I just read the post from LocoDoc and decided to see if I could replicate the problem. Sure enough, when I am connected to the internet via my AX extended 5GHz network signal and a Time Machine backup starts, the internet connection quits. Only recourse is to restart the AX. Note that I do not experience this problem with Time Machine while connected wirelessly straight to the AEBS 5GHz signal. Only when I am connected to the "extended" signal via the AX.

  • Airport express, guest wifi, time capsule all muddled up - Looking for Bob Timmons!

My operatign system is OS X 10.9.1
Airport Express Time capsule 1 TB
I have had my airport express time capsule for 2 years (1 TB)and it worked pretty near flawlessly since then.  It started with the time capsule being too full and that got me messsing with it.
I could not fugure out how to delete files from the time capsule and it was not writing over old ones.  I have seen the same problem on here already. (In the end I bought an external drive and now that seems to have solved it and is scurrently bqcking up to the exteranl, even though I deleted a bunch of old files and my computer is now hovering around 830 MB it still won't back up to time capsule a stime capsule states it is hovering around 965 MB .  If you can help me on this part that is great.   )
Then I tried to reset my AE device.  WIth that I had to reset my network.  this is where the problems began.
Previously my AE had a steady green light and hosted two wifi names (mine and for guests).
Now if I click not bridged (?) then I can not get Internet access on the guest network, i get the signal and it is there just no internet connection.  If I click DHC and Nat it constantly blinks amber but the guest network is  there and i have internet.  I have gone back and forth with this and it is consistently behaving like I described above.
I have done a reset.  I have done a reset and unplugged the machine (though I admit I did not wait two minutes, closer to 45 seconds)
I want to go back to the steady green light and the two wifis established as before.
Also one  more thing to add.  My Server name has disappeared too.  I get an error message that says
There was a problem connecting to the server "name"
The server may not exist or it is unavailable at this time.  Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, then try again.
Seems I did a great job messing with this today.
    Can you please help me?

In its default state, the 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn) will broadcast an unsecured wireless network. It does not need to be connected to another network or the Internet to operate this way. Wireless clients can then connect to this wireless network, but as you know, none will have access to the Internet. Both your Mac and iPhone should have no issues connecting to this network.

  • Can't connect to Express Guest Network

I have an Airport Time Capsule connected to my wireless network. I have a new Express (named Catalina Express) connected as well. There is a secure network and a guest network. The guest network does not require a password. The Catalina Express is located in another Building about 80 feet away. It has a very strong signal. Light is green. When in that building I can connect to the secure network but not the guest network even though the guest network also shows a strong signal.
If I use the Airport Utility, I can see that the express is set up correctly, meaning it has a guest network which doesn't require a password. Here is my network. Everything works fine except the Catalina Express.
Here is the detail on the Catalina Express:

I found the problem. Although the Catalina Express had the Guest Network enabled it was getting its signal from another Express that for some reason did not have the Guest Network enabled. So I enabled that and everything seems fine now.

  • AirPort Express Guest

So we have 3 AirPort Express set up for our wifi network. This network is in a firehouse and it was the easiest way for us to set something up. The issue we are having is that we can not set up the Guest network.
I have figured out what the cause is but cant fix it. The issue is that we run a static IP. The AirPorts are run of the static IP so we have access to the server drives and various printers on the network. This network gives me a 192. IP address which is perfectly valid and we are able to get online. All the AirPorts are plugged into the network switch again to give the access to the shared drives.
When you set up the Guest network the AirPort gives a 169. IP address which is obviously not a valid address.
Now, if I connect the Airports to the modem directly I am able to set up the Guest network without an issue. The problem is we now have no access to the shared drives or our server when directly to the modem. That stuff is only accessible when we connect through the switch.
Any suggetions as to get the Guest Network set up leaving the AirPorts still connected to the switch? Again we are a firehouse and a group of firefighters so we try to keep things simple. We want the Guest network to prevent access to the shared drives and our network server.

Please see this thread for information:
Re: Airport Express A1392 guest network setup issues
Unfortunately, the bottom line is that in order for the Guest Network to work correctly, the AirPort must be connected to the modem.
