Airport Express has very weak signal even to the next room

I am wondering why my airport express has a weak signal. The signal to the next room(about 4 or 5 meters away), is so weak that you can only see one or 2 lines from the graphic at the internet connect. My base station has the last firmware from apple. Has anybody else experiencing this problem or knows what could be wrong?
Mac mini G4 1.25, iMac G5 2.0, MacBook 2.0, iPod 20Gb, iPod nano 4Gb, iPod 30Gb Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I have tried changing channels, I have tried using interference robustness but nothing seems to work. Isn't it so wierd thought that in the same room within 1 meter distance, the signal becomes from strong to weak, to zero?? The funny part also is that when i change channel for a few seconds the signal is very strong until it drops to zero. When i try another wireless device doesn't seem to have this problem but only with airport express base.

buy one (or two) of those newer md031 airport extreme base stations as they have a higher power output.
ur post is implying 'join a wireless network' so i dont think limiting to 2.4ghz or 802.11b or 802.11g would help..
using 2.4 or 802.11b would help over distances, if ur creating a network and joining it then thats not an option
the airport has a couple settings like power output (make sure its set to 100%) or multicast rate that might be worth trying out. multicast set to low helps with clients joining at longer distances and multicast set to high kicks off clients at distances
put the aiprort express up high on the wall so it has a better chance of not being obstructed ?? and not on the bottom of the baseboard??

Will Airport Express boost a weak signal?

I get wireless coverage everywhere in my home, but in some areas the signal is less strong than others. Will an Airport Express boost the signal so that the 'weak' areas will have the same signal strength as the 'strong' areas?

If you are 20 feet from the router and only show a couple of "bars", either your router is not performing up to specifications or you have some wireless interference issues at your location.
An AirPort Express can extend the signal "deeper" but it won't make it stronger. It can only extend what it receives.
I suggest that you investigate your low signal strength issue before adding an AirPort Express. BTW, I assume that you are aware that the Express can only "extend" a signal from another Apple "n" router. It won't work with the products of other manufacturers for that purpose.

My iPad loses connection after waking away from router even in the next room over.

I know it's just my iPad, as when other people with iPads are here (or even just with my iPhone), they still have their connection and mine is lost. Or when I go places, people will have their connection pretty far away from their router and my connection is lost. I have rebooted the iPad and nothing. My iPad screen cracked previously so I took it someplace to get it fixed, so I don't know if that has anything to deal with it? Help please!?

Some things to try first:
1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.

4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
5. Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
    •    Launch Settings app
    •    Tap on Wi-Fi
    •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
    •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

I'm having the same problem, even more:
- Watching movies over AppleTV: switches off every 20min (sleep mode).
- Listening to iTunes music ofer AirPlay: the same.
- A whole confusion with switching airplay destinations (AppleTV, AirportExpress) over iPhone remote app. Sometimes remote cannot find my library anymore
- Before, I was able to multitask: stream a DVD to AppleTV, using airplay mirroring, and simultaneously stream music from iTunes on the same computer, over the iTunes airplay selector, to loudspeakers connected to AirportExpress. No longer possible.
I've grown a big Apple fan in short time, proudly living what for others is the future (your media stored anyhwere, controlled from anywhere, played anywhere, stop thinking in terms of devices). And, I've learnt to savour the moments when you can look your Microsoft friends deep in the eyes and say: "The big difference with Apple - it just works"...
At the moment, I'm trying not to invite my friends.

Airport express has signal, diagnostics ok - but no internet

I just bought an Airport Express and am having trouble connecting to the internet. Sites will not load, and I am redirected to a message from my ISP stating that I am not connected. I use Safari 2.0.1, by the way.
I have a G4 ibook running Tiger 10.4.2 with a Motorola router for Insight broadband service. I called my ISP and they report that I AM connected to the airport and should be able to connect just fine.
I have a full strength signal and the diagnostics check out fine. The unit has a constant green signal. The network base shows up in Admin Utilities. Also, I AM able to stream iTunes to my stereo. All other settings show that I am connected to the airport.
I've reset the Airport to the default settings, reset the router and restarted my mac, but the problem persists.
Any ideas? Would updating Airport software solve this?

Yes, the extra 3-4 minutes can make a difference - on a few systems, nothing less than leaving the modem unplugged from power overnight will reset the connection.
Note to both you and Cam - often people refer to the device connected to their cable or DSL internet service as simply a "modem". These days, many ISPs provide their customers with a device variously referred to as a "gateway", a "cable router", or a "DSL router". For owners of these devices, the solution may simply require disabling the router built into the Airport Express. This is done by (a) running the Airport Admin Utility, (b) selecting to configure the Airport Express, (c) clicking on the Network tab, (d) unchecking the setting to "Distribute IP addresses", (e) updating settings to the Airport Express, and finally (f) restarting all wireless computers.
There is the odd internet provider with with the Airport Express simply refuses to work, even though (by the book) it should. For hard cases like this, buying an inexpensive non-apple wireless router is often the easiest way out.

Airport express wi-fi connection signal problem

It's been 3 days that I'm struggling with my airport extreme and I can't really understand where the problem does come from. Actually, I have two computer, one 1,5 years old 17 inch mbp with Leopard on it and a brand new 15 inch mbp unibody from this summer with snow leopard 10.6.2.
Here is the situation, both of them work well when I'm at work connecting to the wifi of my office. Hence I suppose it's not a computer problem but the connection with my airport express.
At home, I'm loosing the signal from time to time. The problem seam to be worst with Snow leopard than with Leopard. Namely, I have to stay very very close to my airport express to keep having my signal and therefore internet working.
When I loose the signal, airport utility can't even detect my airport express.
I did a hard reset already. The problem seamed to have gone for 30 minutes then it start again with the drop of the signal.
The other symptoms are the following:
1- On snow leopard I sometime have an exclamation point instead of the bars of wi-fi signal on the airport menu.
2- When I restart airport and manage to get my signal back I loose it after 30 minutes on SL and maybe 2 hours on L. However I must incline that globally leopard is still ok, but sometimes its drops too.
Does anyone has any idea or pointer on how to solve those issue ?
My aiport express is also 1,5 years old. Is it still covered knowing that I took the applecare ?

I just want to point out that I never had any issue since those 3 days. I was in vacation and I might have done some updates but I don't remember and I'm not sure. In any case, I'm fully updated for now. Wether it is airport utility, airport express, L or SL. Everything is updated.

I just recently had the same problem with my MacBook Pro (Sept '09). I even used an ethernet cable to connect but to no avail. Then I go to the Apple store and it works just fine...
My wife's iMac (September '09) works just fine too. Go figure.

I already tried the following:
a. Turned the phone off and then on.
b. Checked all wifi connections – no problem given that all our laptops and desktops can connect seamlessly.

e. Tried different microsims from all networks
f. However, all methods failed given that the network reception is very weak and often reflects – “no service”. And with regards to the wifi reception It has difficulty in reading even the signal right in front of the wifi router.
I went to two Apple resellers here in Bangkok and requested that they please look at my Iphone and have it serviced. I was frustrated when they said that given that I bought my phone in Canada, they are not able to support me and should instead try to contact the Apple store in Canada.
I went to apple.ca website and went to the expresslane support and I was said to register and callback. Tried calling the 1800 number but given that I was in Thailand I had difficulty getting a connection.

Very weak signal

I have just moved, and in last home the airport express sent a strong signal to my iBook and my G5.
Now that I have moved (and I added the connection to my speakers) the signal is very weak (but working) on my G5 but full signal on the iBook.
I checked Airport Admin and increased robustness also I don't think it's other items that may cause interference.
The Express is now on the same shelf as my TV, DVD, stereo, but I don't think that should matter should it?
Please help

It is very possible that you may have some form of Wi-Fi interference in the immediate area that is preventing you from getting a good clean signal.
I suggest you perform a simple site survey, using utilities like KisMAC, MacStumbler, iStumbler, or IPNetMonitorX to determine potential areas of interference...and then, try to either eliminate or significantly reduce them.

I have a 5 year old Dell PC and purchased the Airport Express last year. After one of the iphone 4s updates I lost the contact and cannot reestablish. I have even tried to hard wire from my router to the airport express and I cannot connect.

An error has occurred and I can not do anything else.

If you have the AirPort Express setup in Bridge Mode, try changing the Connection Sharing setting to "Share a public IP address"

You will probably get a message about a Double NAT error. Click to "ignore"
This setting might allow mutliple devices to connect and may not. It's worth a try...I have about a 60-70% success rate at hotels with this setting.
Unfortunately, as you note....hotels have become a lot smarter about connections to their network. At some point, they probably will not even allow another router to connect at all.

Try a reset:
Hold the Sleep and Home button down until you see the Apple logo.

I am sorry to hear about your troubles with service on your phone. We definitely want to make sure that you are always receiving the best service options. What zip in general are you having the most trouble in? How many bars of signal are you typically getting? Could you try clearing the cache on your device http://vz.to/KRifEf and also try removing/reinserting your 4g sim card. We are here to help, so please keep us updated.

What I'm looking to do is to have self powered in ceiling speakers in every room in my house with out having to run wires to every room to carry the audio signal. I would like to use the airport express to do the job of carting the audio signal.
Here's my set up now I have an airport extreme and one airport express that I use to carry audio to one room.

FWIW. I have used up to four AirPort Express Base Stations (AX) for streaming sucessfully in pretty much the way you have described. I didn't have a need to try more so I can't attest that more would or would not work.

Airport Express has stopped working, no IP-adress

Airport Express has stopped working. In my Airport tool, I can't see the Airport Express anymore.
Under network, I can still see the Airport, but it says, that it cant find an IP-Adress.
It can see my Airport Extreme.

Try resetting the Airport Express.
If you don't see it in Airport Utility in your Utilities folder, then you would need to reset it...
Do you have it set to "Join" the Extreme network? or something else?

Also, you would not see it in your Network preference panel in the System Preferences.
You will only see the main network which is your Airport Extreme....
Unless you have 2 separate networks....
