AirPort Express has weak signal while playing music from Iphone, intermittent play

I'm having the same problem, even more:
- Watching movies over AppleTV: switches off every 20min (sleep mode).
- Listening to iTunes music ofer AirPlay: the same.
- A whole confusion with switching airplay destinations (AppleTV, AirportExpress) over iPhone remote app. Sometimes remote cannot find my library anymore
- Before, I was able to multitask: stream a DVD to AppleTV, using airplay mirroring, and simultaneously stream music from iTunes on the same computer, over the iTunes airplay selector, to loudspeakers connected to AirportExpress. No longer possible.
I've grown a big Apple fan in short time, proudly living  what for others is the future (your media stored anyhwere, controlled from anywhere, played anywhere, stop thinking in terms of devices). And, I've learnt to savour the  moments when you can look your Microsoft friends deep in the eyes and say: "The big difference with Apple  - it just works"...
At the moment, I'm trying not to invite my friends.

  • Will extending a wireless network using airport express cause weaker signal?

Hoping someone can advise on the following please....
I have installed an Airport Express to extend my wireless network and have confirmed with Apple tech support that it's connected and configured properly. I'm using an Airport Extreme base station as a wireless router.
The AX does not seem to be extending the signal range at all, and since the setup the signal strenght from the Extreme base station seems to be at half previous strengh.
Has anyone experienced this please and, if so, what's the fix?
    Any replies gratefully received.
    Regards

Let's check the settings on your Express. Temporarily, move it to the same room or an adjacent room to the Extreme and power it back up.
Open AirPort Utility - select the Express - Click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the icons and make sure that your settings look like this:
Wireless Mode = Extend a wireless network
Wireless Network Name = Same name as the Extreme wireless network
Check mark entered next to Allow wireless clients
Wireless Security = Same setting as the Extreme network
Wireless Password = Same password as the Extreme network
    Confirm Password
Update to save settings, wait for green light.
Then move the Express another room or two further away from the Extreme....and restart both the Extreme and the Express. Then perform the BSSID test again.

  • Airport Express, a poor choice for transmiting music from iTunes to my receiver

Looks like I just wated $99 for this  devise.   I got rid of my extra iPod which I used to play music on my stereo system.   However, the wirelss Airport express device has frequent interruptions.   Each time someone walks or moves anywhere in the house the transmission gets interrupted.  Sometimes it get interrupted or pauses for a couple of second even without any movement.   Looks like I'm going back to an iPod or CD's to play music reliably.

How do I know if there is wifi interference?
    iStumbler.
I have not connected this device via cable to my router.  I don't want to do it because the router is in one room and the device sits next to my TV and receiver in an adjacent room and I don't want wires dragging on the floor or walls.
You could always use Powerline adapters.
You don't have to turn this device to a router for it to play music from your computer to your stereo.
No, you don't, but it is usually a better router than ISP provided routers. If for whatever reason it doesn't work properly there's always the return grace period.

  • HT204291 Apple TV has huge lag when airplay music from iPhone 5, but video streaming is just fine.

My new iPhone 5 has trouble with airplay music, however, it did perfectly with video sharing.
Symptoms: In "Music" app, turn on airplay, tv screen shows the current playing song. But, it has a huge lag, time jumps every 2 second instead of continously roll over. Switch to "Pandora", same issue. But with youtube video, both video and sound appear very normal.
I tried with my old iPhone 4, no problems at all. I'm pretty sure there's something wrong with the 5. Any idea how to fix this?

Same here. Streaming from my MBA 2012 to apple tv3 works flawlessly, but any type of streaming with iphone 5 has huge lag. I have 10 mbps of internet dl speed and a cisco N broadband router.

  • Airport Express has very weak signal even to the next room

I am wondering why my airport express has a weak signal. The signal to the next room(about 4 or 5 meters away), is so weak that you can only see one or 2 lines from the graphic at the internet connect. My base station has the last firmware from apple. Has anybody else experiencing this problem or knows what could be wrong?
    Mac mini G4 1.25, iMac G5 2.0, MacBook 2.0, iPod 20Gb, iPod nano 4Gb, iPod 30Gb   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I have tried changing channels, I have tried using interference robustness but nothing seems to work. Isn't it so wierd thought that in the same room within 1 meter distance, the signal becomes from strong to weak, to zero?? The funny part also is that when i change channel for a few seconds the signal is very strong until it drops to zero. When i try another wireless device doesn't seem to have this problem but only with airport express base.

  • My Airport Express has a weak signal 50-75 feet from base.  Any solutions?

My AirPort Express has a very weak signal 50-75 feet away from the base.  Any suggestions?

    ideas
buy one (or two) of those newer md031 airport extreme base stations as they have a higher power output.
ur post is implying 'join a wireless network' so i dont think limiting to 2.4ghz or 802.11b or 802.11g would help..
using 2.4 or 802.11b would help over distances, if ur creating a network and joining it then thats not an option
the airport has a couple settings like power output (make sure its set to 100%) or multicast rate that might be worth trying out. multicast set to low helps with clients joining at longer distances and multicast set to high kicks off clients at distances
put the aiprort express up high on the wall so it has a better chance of not being obstructed ?? and not on the bottom of the baseboard??

  • IPod Touch has Weak Signal on Airport Express

    I have the following:
    1. Airport Express with 802.11n Wi-Fi (Version 7.3.2)
    2. iPod Touch running Software Update 2.2
    3. iPhone 3G 16GB running Software Update 2.2
My iPhone can connect to the Airport Express with no problems at all. The signal is very strong and the connection is excellent. However, the signal on the iPod Touch is very, very weak and drops out all the time. In fact, I can be standing right next to the Airport Express and the signal can be very weak. This does not seem right. What do I have to do to ensure that my iPod Touch as the same signal strength as my iPhone? Thanks

That definitely helped a bit. I guess I get one more bar than I got before. However, it is still significantly weaker than the iPhone and is still a bit inconsistent. That was a very good tip though, thanks

  • I have an iPad 2 connected to airport express so that I can play and change music whilst I am teaching ballet class. Recently, I keep losing connection and the airport express gets quite hot. I have alway used Archos but changed to Apple for reliability!

I did use Archos but changed to Apple for reliabilty! Can anyone help or should I just buy a new airport express.

I agree that it's probably interference. Only other possibility, since you mentioned it, it overheating. Is the express situated so that it is well ventilated? That is to say, not buried under other equipment and laying on its side? What does the status light do when you lose connection?

  • Can I use a 2nd Airport Express to extend signal?

I have the AirPort Express 2nd gen.  I play music via my iPhone & iPad when I am "in range" with the AirPort Express thru my home music system.
If I go outside, my iPhone drops the signal and music stops.  My iPad on the other hand has a stronger signal and the music plays on in the same location.
Can I purchase a 2nd AirPort Express and use it as a wifi extender or range extender to increase the distance of my wifi signal?
Or, can I use any wifi router to accomplish this?
I'd like to stay all Apple, if possible, as mixing Apples and Oranges is not good.
If so, can someone please tell me how to set this up?
Thank you all for your valuable assistance.

The AirPort Express 2008 "extender" is about 80 feet away from the AirPort Express 2012 (new) model.  Is this too far to get a good signal?
Wireless performance is affected by "interference".  If you have a clear, line-of-sight path between the AirPort devices, then 80 feet may not be too great of a distance.
But, if there are walls or ceilings or other obstructions in the signal path that "interfere" with the wireless signal, the distance that the signal can travel and maintain decent signal strength and speed is dramatically affected.
On average, a typical wall (sheetrock and 2 by 4s) in a home will absorb anywhere from 10-20% of the signal.  As you might imagine, a ceiling will absorb even more of the signal since it is thicker and more dense than a wall.
Heavy furniture, large mirrors (a mirror has a metal backing) will really slow down and absorb the wireless signal as well.
If the wireless signal must pass through multiple walls, or a ceiling and a few walls, not much of the signal will get through.....even if the distance might be only 20-30 feet between the AirPort devices.

You're probably right, but I've found that sometimes interference can affect one client but not another, even when they're equidistant. (Altho it would be especially surprising in this case, given the similarities in the clients.) Anyway, I thought it wouldn't hurt to try.

  • Second Airport Express to extend signal

How do I do this? My base station has one name and my new airport express has another name. How do I combine them? I just want my signal to extend further around the house but am at a loss as how to do that.

One thought, however. The use of acronyms usually confuses people mightily unless they are totally dedicated to learning a new technical language, which I certainly am not. Most Apple users simply want the setup to be as simple as possible and to only have to deal with it once.
Good point and I really appreciate the feedback. I will keep it in mind. Interestingly, I have found the opposite to be true as well. Some folks prefer the acronym-to-meaning spelled out early in the dialogue, and then, just see the acronym from that point on.
Now that I have my base station extended, not very far but noticeably better than before, I wonder if I can experiment and move the extenders Airport Express to a slightly more distant location to se if it will extend the range further. I hesitate to unplug it and replug it into another location for fear I will just have to reprogram it all over again, something I would early like not to have to do. Can you answer that last question?
Yes, you should be able to do so without having to reconfigure either AirPort. One thing to take into consideration: The extending AirPort needs to be within a reasonable range of the AirPort that it is extending to be successful doing so. This is because, just like any wireless client, it needs a strong enough signal to "see" it in order to extend it.
Without going into a long technical diatribe, network Engineers measure both the signal strength and noise levels to calculate a value, called the Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) Sorry, just had to throw in one of those pesky acronyms there. They then use this value to determine if a wireless device will be successful in connecting to another one. Knowing this, they then would be able to determine the maximum distance away from the primary wireless router to place the extending router. However, the method you propose would work as well ... albeit, a bit more of a "trial-and-error" approach. I have provided the details on how to go about doing so on a number of my Discussion posts and will be happy to help you with it as well ... if interested.

  • Airport Express not broadcasting signal

My Airport Express has been used to extend an Airport Extreme network. This has been working for a few years without trouble.
Today I noticed my Airport Express was only recognizing my Airport Extreme. When looking at the Express setup screen under wireless clients it showed only 1 (the Airport Extreme). The Extreme shows several wireless clients.
I tried resetting the Express to its factory settings, but it doesn't want to do that either.
    Help!
    Thanks!

Did you try the default reset as follows:
Power down the Express for a few moments
Hold in the reset button and while you continue to hold the reset button in, plug the Express back in to power
Keep holding the reset button until you see the amber light begin to blink more quickly.
If you try this a few times without success, then I'm afraid that the Express has experienced an internal failure and it will need to be replaced.

And I have tried to connect with iPhone - same same.

  • Airport Express has stopped working, no IP-adress

Airport Express has stopped working. In my Airport tool, I can't see the Airport Express anymore.
Under network, I can still see the Airport, but it says, that it cant find an IP-Adress.
It can see my Airport Extreme.
    Thanks in advance.

    Try resetting the Airport Express.
If you don't see it in Airport Utility in your Utilities folder, then you would need to reset it...
Do you have it set to "Join" the Extreme network? or something else?
See this Apple doc on how to reset your base station.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3728
Also, you would not see it in your Network preference panel in the System Preferences.
You will only see the main network which is your Airport Extreme....
Unless you have 2 separate networks....
    How many do you have?
