Airport Express: How to configure?

Hi, I need help with configuring Airport Express - I have successfully connected to the airport express and the light is green, however I still can't connect to the internet.
I checked the internet configuration, and I'm connected using ethernet and manual. I have optimum online as my provider. I tried to use the DHCP setting, but it's asking for a DNS server and router name, which I have no idea what to enter. Help...

Have you used the Airport Utility to configure your connection? You should be able to use the "Assist" option to set up your network. I would double check which network you use in your Airport menu. I find that I need to reset my cable modem when I modify my settings. Simply pulling the power cord from the modem for a minute should do the trick.

    Hey everyone in Apple world!
I figured out how to fix the flashing yellow screen problem that I've been having on my MBP!  Yessssss!!!
I found this super handy website with the golden answer: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
I followed the instructions on this page and here's what I did:
    Resetting NVRAM / PRAM
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
I went through the 6 steps above twice, just to make sure I got rid of whatever stuff was holding up my bootup process.  Since I did that, my MBP boots up just like normal.  No flashing yellow screen anymore!!
(Note that I arrived at this solution when I first saw this page: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570?viewlocale=en_US)
Let me know if this works for you!

  • Can't read airport express base station configuration wirelessly

    The setup:
2TB time capsule that takes the ethernet feed from the cable modem for internet access.
Airport express 802.11g plugged into speakers for Airtunes. No ethernet connection, just a wireless network.
    The problem:
I can only read the airport express base station configuration when the mac is plugged into the time capsule by ethernet cable. This does not happen with the other mac I have on the network. It can connect to both the time capsule and the airport express without any problems. So unless I'm plugged in, iTunes and airtunes doesn't connect to the base station, and neither can Airfoil 3.5 or Airport Utility. Airport Utility does see the airport express. It just doesn't read the configuration wirelessly.
I think this had something to do with elgato eyetv not liking airfoil, but I can't say for sure.
    Any thoughts?

When I switch it on all three lights flash, but then after a while the middle one stays on and nothing happens.
You posted in the AirPort Express area, but it sounds like you have an AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS)--correct?
If so, let's start by performing a complete power recycling of your network components to make sure that the BT Voyager router "recognizes" the AEBS.
    Modem/Router Power Recycling - Quick
    - Power-off the BT Voyager modem, AEBS, & computer(s); Wait at least 5 minutes.
    - Power-on the BT Voyager modem; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    - Power-on the AEBS; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    - Power-on the computer(s)
If this fails to get the modem to "recognize" the Internet router, then try the "Full" version.
    Modem/Router Power ReCycling - Full
    - Power-off the BT Voyager modem, AEBS, & computer(s). (Wait at least 30 minutes. If possible, leave the modem off overnight.)
    - Power-on the BT Voyager modem; Wait at least 30 minutes.
    - Power-on the AEBS; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    - Power-on the computer(s)

  • Airport Express -- how high off the ground?

I'm thinking of getting Airport Express. I'd put it by my TV in the living room since that's where the stereo system is so I can pipe iTunes into the main system.
Only thing I'm now hung up on is where to plug the thing in. The closest available outlet is rather low to the ground.
So I'm wondering, for those who have Airport Express, how high off the ground do you think the outlet needs to be in order to allow all the cords to hang underneath and whatnot...?
The outlet is actually oriented sideways... do you think the unit would be able to stay in place if it's hanging that way? If not, I can easily use an outlet rotator, but this then brings me to the issue of clearance off the floor...
    Thanks for your help.

    Welcome to the discussions!
In general, wireless devices like the AirPort Express need to be placed in a higher location to avoid as many obstructions as possible. There's nothing wrong with attaching an extension cord to the device to move it up higher if that is possible.
If you must plug the device into a low wall socket, try to allow the Express as much of a free look into the room as possible.

  • Airport Express: How to switch out of Bridge Mode

I have an Airport Express connected to a Westell 7500 Modem/Router.
Talking with Airport Express support from Apple today they told me that since I was running in Bridge mode there
was limited amount of support that they could provide. Since my AE is only provisioning wireless.
I'd like to change that. I suspect that on the AE I need to unconfigure Bridge Mode.
The Apple person said that the modem would need be configured from 'Private IP to Public IP'.
In the config for the Westell there is an Advanced/Lan/Private Lan which is enabled and has a DHCP start address of 10.0.0.2
    and end address of 10.0.0.33.
There is also an Advanced/Lan/Public Lan page which is currently disabled.
It has Public LAN DHCP Server Enable, Public Lan Enable, Public Lan IP address (set to 0.0.0.0), and Public Lan Subnet Mask (set to 0.0.0.0).
Are these the areas I need to change?
I'm currently using two of the Ethernet ports on the Westell. One feeds into the Airport Express.
The other is connected to one of my Windows 7 PC's.
Thanks for any advice or help!

I think my concern is support as we are becoming more Apple centric.
I would suggest that you check with your Internet service provider to see if they can furnish you with a simple modem.....not a modem/router or gateway device.
Then, Apple will fully support that setup....and your Internet Service Provider (ISP) will as well.
If you are thinking of trying to configure your modem/router to function as a simple bridge mode modem, it might be a good idea to first ask your ISP.....
    1) if this is even possible and, if so,
    2) how to do this, and
    3) if they will support you when the device is configured this way.
I would be very surprised if your ISP will satisfy all three conditions above, so if service and support is important as you state, you might want to think of both your ISP and Apple in that regard.

  • AirPort Express dynamic DNS configuration

    Hi,
I just bought a 2nd gen AirPort Express and completed the setup successfully. Then I saw the option to configure a Dynamic Global Hostname, I assumed its for a DNS. But I can only complete username, password and host name. is that enough? I mean, does the AirPort automatically locates the provider? I want to use noip.com.
    Thank you very much.

    thank you.
The only thing, the instructions in that post are for Mac, very close to the real deal for iOS 8, here are the corrections, I forgot to say that these configurations are unavailable in the AirPort Utility for PC.
    1. Open the AirPort Utility on iOS 8
    2. Click on your AirPort Device, then click "Edit".
    3. Select the "Internet Connection" tab.
    4. Now in the "Domain Name" section type "no-ip.ddns"
    5. Now click "Done" and go back and go to "Advanced" and then "Dynamic Global Hostname"
    6. Enable the sitch for "Global Hostname"
    7. In the "Hostname" section fill it with "yourhostname.ddns.net" or it could be "yourhostname.no-ip.com" or whatever other hostname No-IP.com may have assigned you.
    8. In the "User" & "Password" sections fill it with the username and password that you chose when creating your "No-IP.com" account.
    9. Now click "Done" until you see "Update" which will save the settings.
Now, the only thing remaining is how to setup over WAN as I checked "Allow setup over WAN" in the AirPort Utility.....

  • Hard to accept that (2) airport extremes, (3) airport expresses, cannot be configured to play pandora from iPad to one access point to play to all devices simultaneously.

I have a verizon router hooked to my AP Extreme For my home wireless network. I have mutiple airport express along with an Apple TV wirelessly connected to the network also. With all the ways that these can be configured, how is there not a way to have all of the AP Express receive the same Pandora stream at the same time? Can they all be named the same thing so that my iPad thinks it's sending the signal to only one unit? Again, I find it insanely difficult to wrap my head around the fact that this is so difficult to make happen with the Apple technology available today. Any suggestions???

Yes iTunes can according to this Apple information page: AirPort Express frequently asked questions (FAQ) - Apple Support
Can iTunes send a single AirPlay stream to multiple AirPort Express stations?
Yes. You can send an AirPlay stream to multiple remote AirPort Express units . The maximum number of remote AirPort Express units is up to six. The actual number that will work in your environment  will depend on conditions such as building composition and radio interference, distance to the remote AirPort Express units, and available network capacity relative to your other usage.
I don't know enough about Pandora to help you in-depth with that - maybe someone else here can - but you should first test if it works with iTunes.
That way you'll know if your network setup is working like you intend to. From there we can troubleshoot Pandora,

  • Airport express slow after configuration, why?

OS X 10.4.2, dual 867 g4 (Sonnet pci 802.11 g) and imac flat screen 10.4 (airport card) and airport express: When I logged in through the airport express on first usage (with generic apple xxxxxx network name), the road runner speed test was showing a connection speed of about 1.5Mbps on both computers. After I configure the express (it came with the 6.2 basestation firmware installed) for our network names, security, etc. the road runner speed test shows the connection speed slowing to 90-100kbps.
Any thoughts about why this is happening, or how to rectify situation? Obviously the hardware is ok, but the software after configuration reduces through put drastically.
    Thanks,
    Teg

Thanks for your reply. I installed the 6.1.1 firmware, but the same problem continues. When using the road runner connection speed test, the connection will frequently start out at a decent rate (1.5 Mbps) but fall off rapidly, in 2-3 seconds, down to a poor connection rate of 90-100 kbps. When I connect to the cable modem by ethernet cable the connect speed is in the 3-4 Mbps range consistently. My wireless connection appears consistently to be all four black bars in the menu bar.
I tried down grading the airport version from 4.2, but the system would not allow that.
Is this problem in the Airport Express, the airport 4.2 software, the os 10.4.2, or what? Any guesses?

  • Verizon FIOS, Time Capsule, and Airport Express - How to Extend Network

OK, I just got Verizon FIOS (TV, Internet, and phone). Don't care for the wireless router that is required to be used with it (want 802.11n and Time Capsule). I turned of the wireless on the Verizon FIOS router and installed a Time Capsule in Bridge Mode, which is how the Verizon rep told me to install it. As I understand it, the Verizon FIOS router is still handling DHCP, NAT, etc. I would like to extend the wireless network to reach some dead spots in my house. I have read that the Airport Express can be used to extend a wireless network from an Airport Extreme or Time Capsule, but it appears that I need to set up a WDS with the Time Capsule as the base station, which is apparently not possible on the Time Capsule in Bridge Mode. I am desperately seeking any advice on how to use Verizon FIOS, my Time Capsule, and extend the wireless network to reach the farther corners of the house. I am using a Macbook and a Thinkpad as well as an iPhone on the wireless network with a Dell desktop connected to the Time Capsule via Ethernet. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Before I switched, I had Cox Cable with a Buffalo wireless router and it had great range. Now I seem to be in a worse situation from a wireless perspective with higher TV and Internet quality. Thanks in advance.

If you have an AirPort Express(n), you can configure it to "extend a wireless network". This is a more efficient way to add additional wireless coverage (and much easier to configure than a WDS arrangement).
However, if you have an older "b/g" AirPort Express, you must use the WDS configuration method with this device and the Time Capsule if you want to increase your wireless coverage.

  • Time Capsule with Airport Express how does it know 802.11 b g or n?

    Here is my setup:
    Time Capsule 1 TB 802.11 b, g or n
    Airport Express 802.11b or g
    MacBook Pro 802.11 g
    Powerbook G4 802.11 g
My question is: I have the Airport Express acting as a bridge to pass or repeat the signal to the upper floor of my home. If I use my MacBook Pro this is capable of achieving 802.11 g access will it either try and just connect directly to the TC and maintain that (N) connection or will it be forced to go where the signal is the strongest and go to the AE and automatically default to the max rate of 802.11 (g) of the airport express.
My Probook actually as no issue with full signal access to the TC which is on the first floor but for some reason the older PB G4 only can achieve at most three bars out of 4 but typically just two bars, thus the need for the bridge use of the Airport Express.
    Thanks for the help.

Most of us are still trying to figure out how to add our Expresses and Airports as WDS bridges to TC, so consider yourself lucky. I think that adding a "g" device to an "n" network typically brings the whole network down to g speeds.

  • Apple Airport Express: How To Change IP Address While in Bridge Mode

Hello, I have a Apple Airport Express router and it has been good for a few years. Just wondering how to change my public IP address. I am also in Bridge mode to a cisco router. Also I am on a Windows 8 computer and this is mainly what I want to change the ip for.

Power cycle the cable modem.. I presume that is what the cisco router is.. your modem.. if not tell us precise model and make of the modem.
The public IP is not changed by you.. it is changed by your ISP.. normally if you power cycle the modem on a dynamic system you will get a new IP.. if not call the ISP and request them to make a change.
It is never really necessary unless you got banned from a site.
I am on a Windows 8 computer and this is mainly what I want to change the ip for.
There is no logical link to needing a new public IP to being on a windows 8 computer.
    Explain more about your problem.

  • Airport Express--How many is too many?

I am running a new Airport Extreme base station with 3 Airport Express units to extend the range over about a 6200 sq ft house. My wife set up her office at the far extreme from the base station and, although her signal was somewhat intermittent, it worked well enough to allow her to connect to the internet with adequate functionality (although her signal strength was generally at or below 5 Mbps). After I successfully installed a 4th Express using Airport Utility, and located it in her office, her PC connectivity to the network suffered, and a printer connected to the Express in her office was not recognized on the network and wouldn't print. Do I have too many Expresses on the base station such that the signal is degrading performance for the whole network? Thanks.

If using the "Extend" option instead of a WDS with all the stations being of band type "n", is there a limit to how many Express "n" I can use to extend an Extreme "n".
I currently have one Express "n" extending (not WDS) my Extreme "n", and I would like to add one more. Is there a limit to how many can be used to extend the wireless network wirelessly?
    Thanks,
    Frank

  • Airport Extreme + Airport Express: how to connect to the closest one?

I'm using the new Airport Extreme plus the Airport Express (using WDS to extend the network and stream iTunes). I'm using both PB G4 and a Windows laptop. PB works fine, of course, while Windows laptop tries always to connect to the Express even if the Extreme is closer. Since Express is far away in another part of the house, the connection goes up and down all the time. However, if I unplug the Express, the Windows laptop connects to the Extreme without any problems and without any disconnections.
Does anyone know how to make the Windows laptop connect to the base station which has the strongest signal?

Thanks. However, it seems that "automatic" works better in Mac then in PC
One follow up question: why does PC say that Signal Quality is Poor even when sitting close to Airport Extreme? Is it because it doesn't support the 'n' standard? When connected to Airport Express there are no problems with Signal Quality.

  • Airport Express won't configure to by Airport extreme

I keep getting a error stating "the airport express is configured but we can't find it..."  Anyone else solved this problem?

I did that and still got the error message. I got a link from someone on another board:
    http://www.upgradeyourmac.co.uk/mainsite/MacOSQuestions/Q071.html
...that tells you to do the whole setup manually, and I managed to get it working. It seems there is an issue with the software (from a recent software update, I believe) that doesn't allow the 'assist me' set up to work. I just don't get this...Apple has, on numerous occasions, released Airport updates that have broken the darn thing. Do they not test these updates beforehand? For the record, I am not the only person to have experienced this issue.
Is there a quick and easy way to notify Apple about this?
