If you configure a current (summer 2012) simultaneous dual band AirPort Express in client mode:
1) are both the LAN and WAN ethernet ports available or only one of them, the LAN port presumeably?
2) If you unplug the ethernet cable momentarily to connect a different device, does the AX drop the wireless connection or is it maintained?

Both ports operate as LAN ports in this type of setup, since the Express will be configured in Bridge Mode automatically.
2) If you unplug the ethernet cable momentarily to connect a different device, does the AX drop the wireless connection or is it maintained?
Wireless will be maintained, but you may need to power off and restart the Express.
Better practice would be to power off the Express before you disconnect the cable(s), connect the cable(s) again, then power up the AirPort Express.

How do I setup my airport express as clint mode? I have a printer that I want to use as a wireless printer. The printer is usb only printer. I want to use the Airport express to be able to connect to the existing network as client and be able to print wirelessly.

The AirPort sets itself up in client mode automatically whenever it is configured to "extend" or "join" a wireless network.
If you have an Apple router, the Express will configure itself to "extend" the wireless network, which will provide more wireless coverage in the are where the Express is located and enable the USB port, so that you can attach a compatible printer and configure it to work with the network.
If you do not have an Apple router, the Express will attempt to "join" the network, which will also enable the USB port. The Express does not provide any additional wireless coverage when it "joins" a network.

Does the ethernet port work when the using airport express in client mode?

I am considering using an airport express to extend my existing wireless network to a room where I can't get a cable to.
I will need to connect a at least 3 devices to the airport express.
The questions are:
- is an airport express the right answer to this problem?
- if so, does the ethernet port work (AE on client mode) as a passthru into the main network?
- can I plug a hub to it?

Having problems connecting an AirPort Express in client mode to a Linksys?

I have a Linksys WRT150N as my main access point. I recently dumbed down its security to WPA2 Personal so a Dell, and Xbox 360 could get on it wirelessly. Unfortunately, my AirPort Express refuses to connect now even after re-configuring it to use WPA. Its light just blinks Amber.
Does anyone else have an AirPort Express connected in client mode to a Linksys access point using WPA Personal security? I vaguely recall that I had this problem before, and solved it by using WPA2. Perhaps it's time to get an Apple TV for playing music on the home theater...

Hi, Bill! Actually, no--the AE is creating its own wireless network with the same SSID and password as the Time Capsule. I had big problems with bandwidth degredation when I tried to extend the network like that.
But I believe I tracked down the cause of the issue--the powerline adapter was losing its connection with the other powerline adapter for some reason. Still observing that one, but all the Apple stuff appears to be operating normally. Thanks for the replay anyway!

Connecting an Airport Express in client mode causing problems

Hi! I have an Airport network set up in the following way:
Time Capsule set up as the main router
Airport Express connected to the Time Capsule in bridge mode via powerline ethernet to form a "roaming" network. It has the same SSID, password and encryption as the Time Capsule network.
Everything has been working great, but recently I tried adding another Airport Express wirelessly in client mode so that I could stream music from iTunes to it. Since then, after a period of time, the part of my house with the AirPort Express units loses its ability to connect to the internet wirelessly. It still picks up the wireless signal--I just can't connect to the internet. If I wander to the area covered by the Time Capsule, however, wireless internet works fine.
Unplugging the client mode Airport Express fixes the issue, so obviously that is the source of the problem. Has anybody ever heard of this happening with a similar setup? Thanks!

AirPort Express in client mode with WEP

I just bought an AirPort Express that I'd like to use in client mode so I can stream music from my laptop to my stereo. I have an existing wireless G network supported by a Netgear WGR614v4 router, using 64-bit WEP encryption. My laptop is a Dell Studio 15 running Vista Home Premium, and it has a Dell Wireless 1387 card.
I know there are some reported issues with AE and WEP encryption, but for whatever reason my laptop doesn't connect to WPA networks, so I'm stuck on WEP. I've been using WEP 64-bit, so I attempted to setup the AE to work with that. The AE was connected directly to my Netgear router, and I installed the AirPort Utility software on my Dell laptop. Went through the setup, entered my WEP passkey, and then got to a screen where I clicked "update AE" or something of that sort. It then showed a windows with some upload bars on it that made it look like it was doing something, but it finally resulted in an error message saying the AE could not be found following the update. After looking for help, I stumbled across the following thread:

which in Step 6 he mentions this "error" is normal. That gave me hope, so I disconnected the AE from the router and moved it to the other room where my stereo is. Plugged in the mini cable, then plugged the AE into the wall and allowed it to run its setup sequence. Eventually I had a solid green light, so I figured I was in good shape.
Problem is that I then opened the AirPort Utility software on the Dell laptop to complete the setup and activate AirTunes, but the AirPort Utility doesn't show the AE connected. If I log into my router utility though, it does show the AE as one of the devices on my network, so somewhere there is a disconnect. After reading some more, I realized I could manually connect via AirPort Utility by entering the AE IP address and password. Tried this and it seemed to work because it showed the info for my AE, but when I closed that window it was gone. I figured maybe that's just a bug with AirPort Utility, so I closed it out and went to iTunes, hoping to see the option for selecting AE as the audio output, but it's not there.
I've tried almost everything I can think of, but I'm having no luck. At times I feel like I'm even making negative progress because I'll start everything from scratch and it will get hung up at a step earlier in the process. For instance, right now I've just restarted from scratch and the AirPort Utility can't even connect to the AE to do the initial setup. For some reason, following a Factory Default Reset, and with the AE connected directly to the router, it now boots up to a solid green light, shows up in AirPort Utility under a default base station name, yet the AirPort Utility can't connect to modify my wireless settings.
Does anyone have any advice?

How do I reconfigure my Airport Express in client mode?

My home uses an AT&T U-Verse wireless network to connect to the Internet. I also have an Airport Express hooked to a USB HP Printer to create wireless access to the printer. With a change in U-Verse service, AT&T replaced my network interface with a new box, connected that box to new port at the sub-station, a new wireless network name and a new wireless network password. Now everything works except my "wireless" printer. I suspect that the issue is that the Airport Express has the wrong network name and password, but cannot figure out how to change it. My Airport Utility is version 6.3.1 and it does not find my Airport Express. My Airport Express is an older one and I can find no model number on it anywhere. How do I reconfigure my Airport Express.
Previously when trying to install an Airport Extreme on my system, I proved with several long conversation with Apple support that it would not work with the U-Verse system. I had to take the Airport Extreme back and use two USB hard drives for Tim capsule backups, one for each computer.

AirPort Utility 6.3.1 will work with the AirPort Express A1264, so something else is amiss.
Power up the AirPort Express for a few minutes, then hold in the reset button on the Express for 10-12 seconds and release. Allow a full minute for the Express to restart.
Open AirPort Utility
Click on Other WiFi Devices
Click AirPort Express
That should allow you to reconfigure the Express

I set up Airport Express as Client, I can no longer connect to my wlan

I set up Airport Express in Client mode so that I could use Airtunes. My Router/modem is a netgear one and I use WPA.
I can no longer connect to my wireless network from my ibook.
If I plug in the ethernet to the router I can. I can also then see from the router that Airport express has connected itself to the router.
So what do I have to do to be able to reconnect to myibook to the WLAN?

- Verify that AirPort is at the top of the list. If it isn't, you can drag it to the top.

AirPort Utility is the application that must be used to setup and make any configuration changes to the AirPort Express. I'm not aware of an "App" for this.
If you could borrow a computer from someone there for 30 minutes or maybe use the computer in the lobby, you could download AirPort Utility and reconfigure your Express. To help with setup, use an ethernet cable from the computer to the Express to help AirPort Utility "see" the Express.

AirPort Express-es clients drop out after idling for 5mn... Green light on

Just bought a couple of AEBS' (and upgraded them both to latest firmware v6.3) to stream audio to different rooms in my house (actually bought 3 of them but one was DOA.)
I got a Verizon/D-Link VDI-624 (latest firmware from Verizon) and configured the AirPort Express' as clients thereof, since the D-Link does not support WDS (anyway WDS would consume some bandwidth I do not need to give away) I am using static addresses for anything but the client laptops (which get pre-allocated addresses from the D-Link router DHCP server.) I use WPA-PSK TKIP for security.
This all seems to work good, at least for a little while...
My issue is that after just about 5mn of idle time (after I stop streaming audio, basically) the 2 AirPorts seem to vanish from the network. Green lights still on. But I cannot ping them anymore neither from the laptops nor from the D-Link router. AirPort Admin utility loses track of them as well (could see them for a while, then after stopping audio and coffee break, poof... no more AirPorts in the list!) The kicker is that they won't come back until I power cycle **one of them**. Then more often than not, both seem to come back. Sometimes only the one that was power-cycled. Sometimes, I have to do it again...
Switched the D-Link for a NetGear WNR-854T and the same problem occurred, so I'd be careful to blame the base router here... I'd rather believe the Apple's devices aren't playing ball with the outer world. Particularly since some other threads around here mention similar issues, albeit with earlier firmware versions...
Any ideas/sympathetic comments/suggestions/... ?

I am a mac newby. I have a imac 24 inch and I also have the airport. I experienced the same problem for the first couple of days. What I found out is that my cable modem needed resetting. Once I did this my network is up an running fine. Now here is one small catch, when I am away for a while or using bootcamp (to switch over to Vista), it does take a couple of extra seconds for my system to aquire the signal from the network. Hope this helps.

How can I set up an AirPort wirelessly in client mode on a roaming network?

I recently set up a roaming network within my office using a RADIUS server for access control. I have multiple airports connected to our broadband via ethernetcable providing a seamless network over a large space. It works great.
However, now that I've done this, I can't get one of my airort expresses to work as a wireless music box with speakers plugged in. This airport is in a location that has no ethernet nearby, which is fine because I just want to use it to play music, not extend the network. It's MAC address is configured in the RADIUS server as an authorized device.
I've tried this "client mode" setup, and a variety of other combinations of settings like making it part of the roaming network as an extender, with no avail:

Everything I've tried gives me the "AirPort Utility was unable to find your AirPort wireless device after restarting" message, and my AirPort has only a yellow light.
It seems the AirPort Express is totally incompatible with a roaming network. Is there any way to make this work?

Before we get into details here, do you understand that the Express will not be be able to "extend" the Xfinity wireless network wirelessly?
The Express can only extend a network wirelessly from another Apple AirPort router. Another way of saying the same thing is that if you want to "extend" wirelessly, you will need two Apple AirPort routers.
The Express will need to be permanently connected to the modem/router using an Ethernet cable if you want it to extend the Xfinity network.

AirPort Extreme (802.11n), AirPort Express, and Client Limit Q

I'm very interested in the new AirPort Extreme (APE) due to the ability to access a hard drive from it for network sharing. I think that is awesome. But I have a few questions.
I am currently running 2 AirPort Express (APX) base stations for my network and am getting great signal strength throughout the house. No real complaints there.
One has the modem plugged into in the basement, and the other is set up as WDS. Unfortunately, I am quickly approaching the 10 client connection limit for the APX, so I was looking for a way to expand it.
If I get an APE and use the APX base stations as WDS access points, will I still be limited to only 10 clients attached at a time? And, since I assume the computer attaches itself to whichever of the three AP base stations has the strongest signal, will I alway be able to access the hard drive attached to the APE if I do that? I understand I won't get the 802.11n speeds (fine, I don't care) , but I would love to keep the APX base stations in my network for stereos and signal boosting.

And why does it cut the bandwidth in half?
802.11b/g is not duplex so data can only be transmitted one direction at a time since the same channel (and radio) is used to transmit/receive.
If traffic is flowing from deviceB to deviceA, that traffic will interrupt the flow of data in the other direction and get part of the full bandwidth.
Each WDS link cuts the effective bandwidth in half because the traffic has to be retransmitted again. Let's assume that deviceA and deviceB are connected via WDS. Let's say that deviceA is connected to the internet and clientC is wirelessly connect to deviceB. Let's say that clientC is sending a 54 Mb file to the internet.
- 1 second to send 54 Mb file from clientC to deviceB
- 1 second to send 54 Mb file from deviceB to deviceA
So looking at the bandwidth between clientC and the internet, we see that the transfer rate is:
(54 Mb)/(2 seconds) = 27 Mbps
The effect of WDS becomes even more troublesome when you realize that while the data is being transferred between clientC and deviceB, deviceA has to shut off its radio so that it doesn't cause interference with the transfer. This means that other clients of deviceA are waiting. So WDS has large implications for big networks.

3G MiFi -- Airport Express -- Ethernet client possible? Getting error 6753

I am really struggling setting up a friends Airport Express (new N series version).
I told him to buy an Airport Express to allow his Home Cinema Amplifier (Denon AVR 1912) to gain access to his wireless network/internet (via Ethernet cable). This is to use Airplay, as well as the Denon remote app on his iPhone.
His WiFi at home is provided by a Three MiFi device made by Huawei (http://store.three.co.uk/Mobile_Broadband/MiFi)
His PC connects to the WiFi generated by this unit using an N series USB dongle fine. His, and my iPhone connect to the MiFi's WiFi ok too.
Using the Airport utility it sees the Airport Express, and I set it up to JOIN an existing wireless network (typing in the correct wifi password), and have 'allow ethernet clients' ticked. This is also named proxySTA mode I have read.
After setting this, the Airport Utility disconnects from his home WiFi, connects to the Airports WiFi, but then after this I constantly get error -6753. Firewall is turned off so I do not feel it is a security issue. I get flashing amber light on the Airport, or if green light it still will not provide his Denon amplifier with an ip address (Denon amplifier set to use DHCP)
The web server application running on the MiFi device shows an ip address given to the Airport Express fine (same ip address as the Airport utility shows)
Taking the airport express to my house I was eventually able to set it up to connect to my WiFi, and have a laptop connected to the Airport Express via an Ethernet cable to provide the laptop with network/internet access...so I know this set-up is definately possible.
Anyway, does anyone know if doing this with one of these MiFi type products is possible with the Airport Express please? I would tell him to buy an Airport Extreme if that is the solution.

How can I extend an Airport Express in WLAN mode with an additional Airport Express box

I'm trying to extend the existing WLAN with an additonal Airport Express box. I read through a bunch of comment throughout the communities here but didn't find what I'm looking for.
My actual Installation consists:
A Time Capsule attached to the Internet router which set up my 1. WLAN range
This WLAN has been extended with an Airport Express BOX creating my extended 2. WLAN range
Now I intend the extend the 2nd WLAN of the Airport Express BOX with an additional Airport Express (creating a 3rd WLAN range) but don't find a way on how to set it up correctly.
The physical situation of the location dosen't allow me to add / replace cabeling (Ethernet or similar). If there is any chance I'd like to avoid power-line connections. And, I'm aware of the impacted bandwith on WLAN / WLAN extensions, but can deal with this.

Two requirements that must be met to do what you want.......
1) An AirPort Express 802.11n must be used. Check the Model No on the label on the side of the Express. It needs to be A1264. Any other model number will not do what you want.
2) The Express must be configured to "Join a wireless network" and the option to enable Ethernet Clients must be checked.
Open AirPort Utility and click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
The box to "Allow Ethernet Clients" must be checked
Please check to verify that your AirPort Express meets both requirements

Problems with Airport Express in Router mode

Hi all!
I have an Airport Express and a PC home network (WinXP, Win2k and one Powebook). I have Itunes turned off and updated the firmware to 6.3. My Test PC is updated with all the latest updates. All of the Computers have Wifi G cards and are switched to Windows XP zero config wireless.
I tried to configure the AP express both with the config wizard and the manual Airport admin utility on several computers. I have it configured to 128bit WEP security.
I have no proxies or anything of that kind. Also tried disabling all firewall software.
I have a DSL connection with Aztec DSL600E Modem which was previously configured as a fixed line router (its not wireless).
I spent days at it but could not get the AP to replace the modem as router. The modem is configured to use PPPOE/PPPOA (tried both).
When I configure the modem to stop being a router (I think this is done by selecting its "Server and Relay Off"
option (it has either Server on, Realy on, or the above) in the Modem's DHCP configuration screen.
Well when I do this, and configure the AP to distribute IP addresses (share a single IP) and "connect using PPPOE" connection, its light goes green but none of the computers can browse the internet, it just goes to "page not found" after a while. The PC's also then report a conflict in IP address.
On the other hand, if I restore the modem to act as router, configure the AP as a Wifi bridge-to use Ethernet and not to distribute IP's, internet does work but slower than normal. (Not bandwidth, its the DNS lookup that slows things down I think, whenever trying to go to a new web address it takes several seconds to look it up before it says "web page found" on the bottom of the IE browser). If I disconnect the Wifi and connect one of the clients directly to the DSL modem, the DNS lookup takes seconds.
I tried clearing the Cache, resetting the AP, doing IPconfig /release and /flushdns etc.
Internet speed tests like DSL Speed test report latencies of 800ms sometimes.
So i'm thinking that there is some conflict in the DNS or DHCP between the modem/router and the AP.
What is better? leave it as is or try to get the AP to act as router and the modem as only a modem?
All of my clients are set up to have automatic TCPIP configuration with DHCP.
Also I wanted to ask:
1) What does "domain name" and "DHCP client id" in the AP Admin utility / internet tab?
My modem config screen has a "Management IP" section with:
IP Address: 10.0.0.138
Netmask: 255.0.0.0
Default Gateway:xxxx
Hostname: xxxxx
Domain Name: xxxx
Are the last two the same as the AP refers to as domain name as DHCP client ID?
and why do I need a domain for just a home network?
and why are the last two fields full in the modem screen if I don't have a domain?
2) From what I remember of routers, they should have some place of configuring the peer to peer network name (workgroup) is that what they mean by "hostname" or "domain name"?
The problem is that this Aztec model has no online manual. And the other models Aztec manuals don't go to such advanced details. And my ISP doesn't give support for sharing with routers (it is allowed but not supported). They will just say buy our monthly plan with WIFI etc.
I would like to share files as well as internet access.
3) What does the "Enable default host" option mean in the AP config network tab?
4) What does the "Relay on" field mean in the Modem/router DHCPConfig screen?
5) How do I ensure there is no conflict between the AP and modem/router, and that they use the most efficient method for looking up DNS's?

It seems so complicated, a few years ago I set a 3COM Wifi router in a PC environment (Cable Internet) and was working within hours.
by the way in the AP config summary it all looks normal except the "LAN MAC Address" which is empty.

It allows you to configure a device as a server. All of the ports of that device will be directly addressable from the internet.

You worry too much. There is nothing special to do.
