Airport express intermittently locks up

I have an Airport Express (AE, A1264, 802.11n) which I've configured to play music thru my AV receiver from my MacBook Pro - the AE is only 10 feet from the computer. It locks up dropping the wireless connection with the computer intermittently; I don't have Internet and the orange blinking light just goes solid orange. It stays in that state for up to 2-3 minutes and then goes back to broadcasting. Is there anything that I can test/fix to determine the cause. Is the AE defective? It's out of warranty and I'm not sure what to do next. It obviously is sub optimum in its current state.

The 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn) would not get a Public IP address, but it would have a Private IP address of 10.0.1.1 ... and it would be providing wireless clients connected to it with Private IP addresses in the 10.0.1.2 - 10.0.1.200 range.
I just verified that this works. Please double-check your settings to see if you may have missed something.
AirPort Utility > Select the AXn > Manual Setup > AirPort > Wireless
Wireless Mode: Create a wireless network
Wireless Network Name: <enter a desired Network Name or SSID>
Radio Mode: <leave the default or select a desired radio mode>
Channel: Automatic
Wireless Security: <select the desired wireless security type>
Internet > Internet Connection
Connect Using: Ethernet
Connection Sharing: Distribute a range of IP addresses
Internet > TCP/IP
Configure IPv4: Manually
IP Address: 10.0.1.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Router Address: 10.0.1.1
DNS Server(s): <leave blank>
Domain Name: <leave blank>
Internet > DHCP
DHCP Beginning Address: <leave default or change to a desired starting address>
DHCP Ending Address: <leave default or change to a desired ending address>
Music
Enable AirTunes (checked>
iTunes Speaker Name: <leave default or enter a desired speaker name>
Advanced > Logging & Statistics
Allow SNMP (unchecked)
Your AXn will still report at least three errors: 1) Configuration of WAN, 2) SNMP over WAN, and 3) Double NAT. These can all be safely ignored to stop the AXn's status light from flashing amber in this configuration.

  • Airport Express intermittent trouble

I'm using an Airport Express with my iMac G4, Powerbook, and notebook PC. The powerbook and pc work great, however my iMac works intermittently connecting to the net.
Sometimes it works fine, others all I get is "Safari can't connect to the server." Last night I reinstalled the Airport software on the iMac, and I thought that resolved it. Same problems tonight.

Sometimes this is caused by radiofrequency interference from neighboring networks or 2.4GHz portable phones (yes, even though the other computers seem unaffected). Try changing the channel used by your Airport Express (start experimenting with either channel 1 or 11) - this setting found under the Airport tab of the Airport Admin Utility.

  • Airport Express not locking to DAC

    Hello
My old Airport Express died and Apple wouldn't get it fixed for me so I bought the new generation.
It doesn't work, when I play through iTunes to my DAC, there are audible pauses in the audio that occur at the same time my DAC displays "no lock".
The DAC is an Audiolab 8200 CD.
My old express worked without any issue.
The computer, a MBA 13 2013 is in the same room as the express.
    Express has latest firmware update
Mac is running latest Apple SW
The Audiolab 8200 CD DAC works with the same optical cable using my AppleTV 2nd generation, on the same wireless newtwork and the same MBA.
    --------How can I resolve this?

Ironically, after having discovered and reporting this issue with the airport express, I investigated it on computeraudiophile.com and an article mentioned jitter on the latest iteration of the airport express is very problematic, such that even expensive DACs with reputable ICs could not cope. The result of which is audio cutoffs. One thing is clear, I tested this against my Apple TV (all other variables remain the same, cable,  hardware, software, iTunes library etc and the issue was not reproducible). I intend on calling AppleCare to report this. I spent thousands of dollars this year on Apple equipment, I deserve to see a proper evaluation of the symptoms reported. I think we all do. It's even in Apple's interest to learn about this so that they can improve their product.
My DAC is an Audiolab 8200CD. I don't have the firmware version on hand.
I am not here posting this to put down Apple but I do feel a little cheated. I am looking for a logical explanation. I even tried different firmware on the express. My previous express worked fine until it died suddenly.

  • Airport Express Intermittent loss of signal from iTunes

My setup has been in place for some time and consists of a Windows machine w/iTunes and an Airport Express connected to my main stereo. Throughout mutliple iterations of iTunes S/W version and Aiport Express Firmware versions, it seems that there are certain versions that were very stable and others that were not. The current iTunes version seems to have this problem regularly and the problem is this - As I'm listening to music streaming from iTunes wirelessly to the Airport Express and to my stereo, it seems to lose connectivyt momentarily and then regain it. I have two Airport Expresses and they both react the same. This is very frustrating. Has anyone else encountered this and is there a solution?
    Thanks,
    Howard

    Solved it!
I tried everything - re-installing Airport Firmware, Airfoil, Robustness Interference, passwords for the remote speakers....
It kept nagging at me that the drops were often regular at every 60 seconds and Windows Zero Configuration reportedly checks for a stronger signals every 60 seconds.
So today I tried installing the Manufacturer's Wireless Utility and disabling Microsoft's Windows Zero Configuration. This worked perfectly - no more dropouts.
As before iTunes7 never had the problem - it started with iTunes8 - I assume iTunes8 is less able to buffer network dropouts.
I have spent a lot of time on this - but I am very happy to have working music again.....

  • AirPort Express is locking out iPhone

My network will not allow the iphone to hook up. It shows the "lock" on the screen and then when I try to enter the phone shows a page labeled DHCP and says IP address, Subnet Mask, Router, DNS, Search Domains, and Client ID. Any ideas?

Thank you for your reply. I have checked all your suggestions to the best of my ability and all seems to be okay. My ISP/airport connection uses automatically configured DHCP connection, so I don't have control of any options there. All the tests I have run indicate the connections are working properly. The ISP has checked it on their side too.
The blocking of farm3 happened at a time when no changes in any software or hardware were made. Everything else is working well. Reported it as a bug to Mac but of course there was no response. I would get a new airport extreme if I thought it would help but no guarantee there so may just end up using ethernet and a cable when I want to use Flicker. Don't know what else to do.

  • Why does the AirPort Express intermittently stop routing?

One minute I'm surfing the net just fine and suddenly the router stops working.  I will have to reboot it before it starts working again.  Any ideas as what is causing it to stop?
    Thanks in advance.

    Thank you!!!
I don't think #1 is the cuase since there are no other electronic devices (other than cell phones) in that area. I also don't think #2 is the culporate since the access point and the cable modem sit next to each other and are coneccted with a short ethernet cable. But, I think #3 is the more likely cause.  I've tried contacting my cable modem provider but they don't want to deal with a wireless router since it's not something they supply.  Is there something I can do on my own?  Or is there a way I can prove to them that it's something (specifics) they'll need to fix?

  • Airport Express not working with Comcast

I used to have AT&T and had my airport working well. Yesterday i changed to Comcast and my airport is not working the light stays yellow.. I tried resetting it but it didn't work.. I use it with my old Cisco router and its working. Whats wrong with my Airport Express? My computers are Windows 7

A solid amber light indicates that the AirPort Express has locked up....or it is defective.
Suggest you that try a Factory Default Reset as follows:
    Pull the Express from power
Let it rest for a few minutes
Hold in the reset button and keep holding it for another 8-10 seconds while you plug the Express back in to power
Release the reset button after the hold period and allow 40-45 seconds to restart
The Express should display a slow, blinking amber light at this time
If you continue to see a solid amber light after a few tries with a Factory Default Reset, the Express has failed and it will need to be replaced.

  • HT4262 I moved my airport express and now the light is solid orange.  What is wrong?

I moved my airport express and now the light is solid orange.  What is wrong?

Solid amber is an indication that the AirPort Express has locked up, or that an internal electrical component has failed.
Power off the Express for a few minutes, then power it up again. If the solid amber light persists, the next step would be to perform a Factory Default Reset on the Express to see if that will clear the lockup so the Express can be re-configured.

  • Ipad 3 has intermittent issues with airplay to airport express

    Hi
I have difficulty streaming from ipad 3 to my airport express, its very intermittent.
Neither my iphone or my mac have trouble

Hope this helps others who are struggling to get the most out of their airplay devices.
After I spent a couple of hours talking to Crutchfield, Yamaha and Century Link I think I figured it out, at least in my case.  Thanks to Google I was able to find some posts that pertained to my particular Century Link modem router.  Evidently the modem that I was provided has a bug that has yet to be corrected with a firmware update that when set up for Auto Channel it doesn't necessary find the "best" channel.  So after reading this I hooked into my modem and saw that it automatically connected to channel 8.  I read some stuff that said typically channels 1, 6 and 11 are the best for what that is worth.  I changed this feature to override the automatic channel selection and chose channel 6 (which was a suggestion I read online) and I have been streaming various music sources (spotify and Pandora from my ipone 6 and ITunes from my iphone 5 and 6 and from my PC) for several days and countless hours and not ONE skip.  I couldn't be happier.
How Crutchfield, Yamaha or even Century Link couldn't figure this out is beyond me but at this point I don't care because my setup is finally working has I hoped it would.  I am just keeping my fingers crossed that this performance issue doesn't come back.
    Hope this helps someone.

  • Airport Express--locks up frequently for no apparent reason

Have a question for you technical folks. We have two (2) airports, both bought in the last six months, both have the latest firmware installs. One, Airport 2 in our labeling scheme, runs a USB printer and it NEVER, EVER locks up. Fat and happy.
The other one, Airport 1, runs a TOSLink to our Bose speaker system, we simply stream iTunes radio to it. At LEAST once a week, I'll get the flashing amber light and Airport Administrator shows that it's offline (or more specifically, doesn't exist!).
Our network is flat out reliable; it doesn't happen when our ISP refreshes IP addresses, it's not a DNS issue, this one Airport just decides to go 'offline'.
I unplug it, plug it back in and in 30 seconds the world is back to normal.
Do others get the same mileage on Airport Expresses? Is it a streaming music issue? Is there a setting on my router that I should potentially look at?
    Thanks in advance.

I'm posting this just in the hope that it might help someone else, suffering similar issues with their Airport Express. What I found out that helped markedly was to go in, hard reset the Airport, then manually configure it with a static IP address, outside of my normal DHCP enabled devices.
We set aside .1 thru .49 on our DHCP and I setup the AE to grab .20, well outside of the normal 'auto DHCP' devices that grab .1 thru .12 or so. I honestly think the Airport, grabbing .1 or .2 was just getting stepped on by other devices on our wireless network.
So far, so good. On the .20 address, we've had no further issues. I don't know if it was the 'hard reset' or the IP address, or, likely, a combination of the two, but we're back in business.

i use itunes to play music through my airport express but sometimes the songs cut out sporatically.  a song will be playing along then all of a sudden there is intermittant music and silence. What could be causing this?

I finally resolved my problem after spending way too much time on it. I simply handed my 160GB iPod to my husband to put his fav Stones & Beatles songs on and I went back to my 80GB Microsoft Zune which has never disappointed me.
After spending so much time trying to figure this out I did finally take it back to Apple Store who performed a diagnostic and found there was a problem with the device. They replaced it with a refurbished one which has similar issues. All I wanted to do was listen to my music. Was that too much to ask? So I am happy to be free of this problematic device. No more Apple for me!!

  • Lock Airport Express in 5GHZ Mode

I am using my Airport Express 802.11N (1st Gen) as a wireless bridge between my TimeCapsule 802.11n (Living Room) and my Slingbox (Bedroom). I do not need my Airport Express to extend my network at all, just need it to act as a bridge. I have read the Express is a dual frequency device (2.5Ghz and 5Ghz), but cannot use both at the same time. Is there a way to lock my Express into only using the 5GHz frequency?

Normally, when the AirPort Express is configured to "Join" or "Extend" a wireless network, it will look at both the 2.4 GHz band and 5 GHz band and choose the best quality, or strongest signal......which is almost always going to be 2.4 GHz if the signal has to pass through any obstructions like walls or ceilings.
You can "force" the Express to connect to the 5 GHz band, but in order to do so, you must setup the Time Capsule to provide a separate name for the 5 GHz network. Once that is done, you can "point" the AirPort Express to that specific network.
But....there is no guarantee that connecting to 5 GHz will provide you with a faster connection. If the signal must pass through several obstructions to reach the Express, the 5 GHz signal may well be slower than the 2.4 GHz signal at that point.
Post back if you need more details about how to set this up. But, also keep in mind that when you give the Express the ability to choose the best quality signal....as it is doing now....it is connecting to 2.4 GHz because that is the better quality signal....and likely faster signal.

  • AirPort Express has weak signal while playing music from Iphone, intermittent play

AirPort Express has weak signal while playing music from Iphone, intermittent play

I'm having the same problem, even more:
    - Watching movies over AppleTV: switches off every 20min (sleep mode).
    - Listening to iTunes music ofer AirPlay: the same.
    - A whole confusion with switching airplay destinations (AppleTV, AirportExpress) over iPhone remote app. Sometimes remote cannot find my library anymore
    - Before, I was able to multitask: stream a DVD to AppleTV, using airplay mirroring, and simultaneously stream music from iTunes on the same computer, over the iTunes airplay selector, to loudspeakers connected to AirportExpress. No longer possible.
I've grown a big Apple fan in short time, proudly living  what for others is the future (your media stored anyhwere, controlled from anywhere, played anywhere, stop thinking in terms of devices). And, I've learnt to savour the  moments when you can look your Microsoft friends deep in the eyes and say: "The big difference with Apple  - it just works"...
At the moment, I'm trying not to invite my friends.

  • Locked out of Airport Express

    Hi all
I've managed to lock myself out of my Airport Express. I've just arrived at uni and I'm having trouble configuring the Airport to connect to the PPPoE network. I've managed to do it a couple of times but it then means that I can't play music with AirTunes.
Anyway, I've tried the WDS setting in an attempt to make the Airport a "bridge" and now I just can't access it at all. The reset button doesn't seem to be doing anything and I'm completely shut out.
Would really appreciate any help that can be given.
    Many thanks
    Jack

    Hi,
Read the following article that explains the 3 type of Airport Express reset. If your issue is that you no longer have the password to log on the AE, maybe you will have to perform a factory reset.

  • HT4628 Intermittent reception when streaming music via Airport Extreme and Airport Express to powered speakers. Is this a problem with the Extreme?

i get intermittent reception when I stream music from I Tunes via Airport Extreme and Airport Express to powered speakers. I Tunes continues to play uninterupted on the Mac.  The problem does not lie with the Express as it occurs on both of my 2 Express at the same time. is this a problem with the Extreme?

Well, repying to my own post... Might have found the solution: I tried to do the same with a Macbook Pro 2010 using the very same setup. And it worked perfectly! No freeze, no nothing.
    One explanation I see:
my iMac is dating back to May 2007, a Core 2 Duo 2,16Ghz with 2 Go of RAM.
So the computer's characteristics (or the Wifi component or the combination of all of this) might be not robust enough to allow streaming to those 2 devices...
    Anyone's got anything to add?
