Airport Express/Iphone 3G Installation Planning questions

I'm planning for my iphone 3g and Airport Express and have some basic questions that many of you can answer easily:
1. If initially, Airport Express will be used to get to Internet from my imac (connected to lan port) and from my Iphone 3G, (where my Verizon dsl connection seems to use dhcp), can I avoid a manual setup of Airport Express by using just the basic install Airport Utility screens?
2. If I unplug my hp printer from my imac (usb connection) and plug the cable into the Airport Express usb port (before using the Airport Utility program), then infrequent guest's mac portables could use my printer. Will I be able to use my HP printer from the Safari program in my iphone 3g (or is print via Safari in an iphone not an option)?
3. I currently have a 768k download speed connection with Verizon dsl (speedtest.net says 738 kbps download and 123 kbps). This speed is sufficient for me today (except for some, not all, Internet tv sites--like tnt (via XP under BootcamP) Would this dsl speed be sufficient for a quality voice call from my Iphone through Airport Extreme (using either a voip package or hopefully, an at&t femtocell solution) ?
4. With my basic Verizon dsl connection, is there any reason to contact them to get or give them any information or can I get all the info needed to install my Airport Extreme from my Leopard's network preferences screen?
Thanks for any help you can give.

1. ...can I avoid a manual setup of Airport Express by using just the basic install Airport Utility screens?
Probably but you won't know until you get to the point of entering all your settings.
2. ...Will I be able to use my HP printer from the Safari program in my iphone 3g (or is print via Safari in an iphone not an option)?
This is not an AirPort Express (AX) question but an iPhone question. Can the iPhone print to a printer offered via bonjour over Wifi? Something to ask in the appropriate iPhone discussion area.
3 ...Would this dsl speed be sufficient for a quality voice call from my Iphone through Airport Extreme (using either a voip package or hopefully, an at&t femtocell solution) ?
Possibly but it is impossible to speculate on unknown and theoretical items.
4. With my basic Verizon dsl connection, is there any reason to contact them to get or give them any information or can I get all the info needed to install my Airport Extreme from my Leopard's network preferences screen?
Normally you wouldn't need to contact them. Earlier you were talking about an AX and now you are mentioning an AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS). Neither of these have anything to do with Leopard's network preference screen.

I have an AirPort Express, iPhone 5, and MacBook (late 2010). How do I see the graphical overview of my network? (I can't seem to find a way to see it).
My computer is acting....well, strange.  I can't put my finger on it but it doesn't seem right.  Menus look skewed.  Some applications look like they're trying to disguise themselves as apple (no consistant window formats).  Airplay turns on and off on my devices on it's own.  And some locked system preference seem to unlock themselves, or won't even grey-out after I lock them.
I have changed my password many times but the issue keeps coming back.  I feel like I'm going crazy - but I know that something just isn't right...maybe someone's been hacking me? (I have no idea why...)
Anyway, maybe I could have stemmed from an improper setup of my wireless network.
    Any thoughts?
Also, right now, when I just signed into apple communities....
I have an iCloud email address that is accociated with my 1 and ONLY Apple ID...
It seems to have been working but...
When I loged in here it only saw my:
                                  OLD MacBookPro
                                  3 Old iPods
My new MacMini with OS X Sever (Server is currently turned off)
Could my Apple ID be confusing my MacBook (which I'm currently using) as an old iPod or my old MacBookPro?
I doesn't even see my iPad (1st generation), or my iPhone 5
Also, the Mac App store is giving me the option to download Mountain Lion??? I already have version 10.8.3...
Can anyone perform an analysis on my account and computer?  I have been to the Apple Store 6 seperate time and the problem was not resolved (after 6 COMPLETE hard drive wipes).
    PLEASE HELP!

i guess you could put the aiport utility app on your iphone, click on the aiport express there, it will show you how many devices are connected to it and the mac addresses of those devices.

  • Airport Express...A few questions!

    Hi,
I dont know if theres a separate section for Aiport queries so I'm posting here I just recently bought an Airport Express and it took quite a while to get it up n running. So far it does what it promises to do. But there are a few questions I have so as to understand if this thing could do more.
    1. The AEX has a USB port to connect a compatible printer...but since its a USB port can I connect an external USB Hard drive to it like you can do with the AEBS. Any suggestions on this would be more than welcome.
    2. The Itunes slipstream for music works fantastic! but its no point if you're going to have all other audio routed through the internal speakers. Is there a way to stream all audio to AEX and not just Itunes. What if I'm watching a movie? will I have to disconnect the AEX to the speakers system and then reconenct it to the MBP. If thats the case then its going to be pain doing it every time...then the AEX becomes less utilitarian.
PS: I dont want Airfoil as there is a lot of delay in using it.
    3. Is it Ok if I keep the AEX unit on all the time(without fear of it blowing up) or do I switch off when not in use?
Any Advise on the above would be much appreciated.Thanks.

Ok I get it...you can't connect a USB hard drive to the usb port of the AEX, but has anyone tried to do this and what has been the experience?
If the base station supports 802.11n, the hard drive will be accessible to computers associated with that base station. If not, it will ignore the hard drive without damaging either the drive or the base station.

  • Airport, Airport Express, iPhone & PS3 wireless network will this work?

Hi I need help with the above,
I've got an iMac 15" G4 800Mhz, it is fitted with a standard airport card, the G4 is connected to the internet via ethernet to a Zyxel P-600 Series ADSL modem. I have also been streaming itunes (using airtunes) to a seperate hi-fi amp in another room using an Airport Express Base Station, THIS ALL WORKS.
I have since bought an iPhone and a Playstaion3 (PS3) and want this all to work together but does not. It would seem that the Airport Express Base Station is the dominant part of this network and I want to change this priority. No matter how far I delve I cannot find the answer. Basically I want the following setup:
iMac G4 (with Airport Card) that is connected to the internet via ethernet to be the 'main Base Station' (not the Airport Express as is currently), I then want to continue streaming Airtunes to the Airport Express and also use this device as a booster for the wireless network. The reason for the new wireless setup is to enable the iPhone to connect to the Internet (the iphone currently sees the network but cannot connect to the internet because the Airport Express is NOT connected to the ADSL Modem), I also want the PS3 to connect to this network.
Am I asking too much of the Airport Card (The one in the G4)? or should I simply buy the new Airport Extreme Base Station and start again?
Any help would really be appreciated, Paul

sorry if i sound stupid but does that mean that if i'm using the AX to stream music (using Airtunes) I cannot simultaneously use it as a wi-fi extender?
    That situation is possible.
If so can I set up the AX to just stream music and then use an Airport Extreme Base Station hard wired to the ADSL Modem and the iMAc and connect the iPhone and PS3 to the internet via the AEBS wi-fi network. Essentially creating one wi-fi network for iPhone/ PS3 wireless connection and a seperate Airtunes network for wireless music streaming, or am I just dreaming, cheers for your help.
Sure you can do that. But then you will have to decide if you want to stream music OR you want to be on the internet. Your computers can't connect to both at the same time.
You probably want to do the above, but configure your AX to join the wireless network provided by the AEBS. Then you will only have a single wireless network and you can stream music, print, and surf the internet all at the same time.

  • Time capsule, Airport Express, iPhones

    Hello,
I've tried another forum but could get an answer so I'm not sure if this is a Time Capsule problem but here it goes. I have a TC 1TB (Dual Band) as my base station that appears to be working fine and I have one new airport express that is extending the network.
I have a Macbook Pro that can connect anywhere no problem and can stream music over the AX.
However I have a couple of iPhones (3GS and 4) and having previously worked fine they suddenly can't connect to the network when they are only in range of the AX but can still connect when in range of the TC. All the firmware is up to date. I have reset the network but they still can't see the express. I have tried a bunch of different radio modes but to no lasting success. Sometimes an iPhone will connect but it seemingly kicks off the MBP!
Why is this happening and how can I sort it out?
    Current Settings:
Wireless Mode: Create a Wireless Network
    Allowing network to be extended
    Radio Mode: 802.11a/n - 802.11b/g
    Radio Channel Selection: Automatic
    Wireless Security: WPA2 Personal
    Country: UK
    Multicast Rate: Low
    Transmit Power: 100%
    Using Wide Channels
    Cheers,

    It was connected at 2.4ghz.
The problem has randomly turned out to be a wireless TV transmitter. It must have been operating on a similar frequency to the iPhone's WiFi and therefore screwing up the signal in that part of the house (where the express is!).
Frustrating stuff but at least it is solved now.
Thanks very much for your help.

  • Airport Express -- old model vs new - question

On the Ariport Express Wiki page,  it states that the old model A108x does not have "Wireless-to-Ethernet Bridge mode" while the newer (A1264) model has it.  If in fact the newer model does have this,  what does it allow one to do vs having the older model?  ( I have the older model )
    Thank you.

OK, let me see if I've got this right:    if I had an older model Express as my base model and another older model used to extend the signal,  I could not use the available ethernet port of the second express to connect to a laptop that does not have a wireless card and access the internet on that laptop.
No that is not correct. You can configure the two 802.11g AirPorts in a WDS. The second Express' Ethernet port WOULD be enabled for wired clients.
But if I had two of the newer models (or an extreme as my base and one newer express), then I would be able to use the express' port to wire into the laptop and access the internet.   Yes?
Sorry, if I am causing you additional confusion. You basically have three choices to enable the second Express' Ethernet port for wired clients:
Using two 802.11g AirPorts, configure them for a WDS.
With one "g" and one "n" AirPort, configure the "n" AirPort as a ProxySTA.
With two "n" AirPorts, configure both for an extended network.

  • Considering Airport Express purchase, but have some questions...

    Hi people.
As per title. I'm considering purchasing this in the near future, but although i understand how it works, i just have a few questions...
    1) The unit has a USB port correct? I have an external HD & DVD drive, scanner and printer aswell as my iPod dock running off a USB hub. In theory, i should be able to connect a USB device to the AE to get it to work wirelessly, yes? So would it be the same if i ran the USB hub off it? (USB hub has it's own power supply too).
    2) I have a 2008 Aluminium Intel Mac, all up-to-date. Am i correct in thinking all i need to buy is the AE? Obviously i have the correct equipment to connect to the internet, and the Mac does have airport.
    3) The unit won't be that far away from my Mac-how reliable are the connections? Do they suffer from much interference? And how secure is the connection?
    Any advice or experiences welcomed!
    Dan

    1) - The USB port on the AX is usually a printer only port but I don't see why it would not function with ANY other USB devices. I am using a Time Capsule as the main router with a 500 GB Seagate drive and 3 printers connected (and working!) and supporting 3 AX units. You will have to find connected printers and drives via the Sys Pref ->Network menu (Browse)
    2) - That should be OK. You get the advantage of having a router firewall between you and outside. FWIW, I just sold an Airport Extreme for just under $100 on the "Bay" about the price of a new AX. Lacks an audio out port tho' but supports a USB hub system and passes AirTunes
#) - Security.... once you have set up your passwords properly (big words with U/L case, symbols and numbers) it should be pretty secure to casual evesdropping. RFI - use AP Grapher (free) to see traffic on adjacent channels and choose accordingly.
Hope this makes some sort of sense.......

  • MX860 Printer is Offline after Airport Express Base Station Installation

Do I need another driver? While there is obviously a driver for direct USB printing from my Mac Book, the driver being listed in the System Profile, and USB printing works, there may be no driver installed on my Mac Book for network printing...
The base station installation was successful according to a screen message on my Mac, and the printer is recognised as a shared printer. Finally, the base station was sucessfully connected wirelessly to an existing wireless network, which uses a Belkin N300 router.
I have worked through Apple's "Printer troubleshooting for AirPort Base Stations and Time Capsule, article TS1283", but I have not tried downloading and installing another driver, or resetting the printing system.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Only single sided, though from the Mac Book, but this applied beforehand (the print pane lists two-sided printing, but it is greyed out and apparently not available).
You cannot use the Layout menu to perform two sided printing with the Canon inkjet drivers. Instead you should have a menu called 'Duplex Printing and Margin'. Open this menu and you will see the print duplex checkbox.
However, with the Mac Book, after I set "Canon MX860 Wireless" as my default printer, I have to manually set this again when actually printing, because it reverts to "Canon MX860 USB". A tick remains by "Canon MX860 USB", which I cannot transfer to the preferred wireless menu option. Assumptions are dangerous, but presumably this would rid me of the USB option permanently...
If you open Print & Fax and set the MX860 Wireless as the Default Printer, then this should appear first in all applications.
You could also look at removing the MX860 USB queue from Print & Fax. This would stop you from accidently selecting it in the Printer dialog. Also, if you ever do need to connect the printer to the Mac via USB, the queue will be automatically recreated.
The Windows installation works well except that when I print the printer is shown as not responding, when in fact it is working perfectly.
I'm yet to test this on my Win7 VM. I will see if I get the same message.

  • Airport Express To Stream iTunes - Some Questions

    Hi,
I'm getting an AX primarily to stream iTunes music. I am currently using the Time Capsule product to run my wireless home network.......
With AX do you need to stream to powered speakers or a stereo only? Can you just plug in a set of headphones into the AX unit to listen to the music? Also, I do have a Bose home theatre system and a set of Bose pc speakers. I'm assuming those Bose items could be used for listening ? I'm assuming the cable would run from the AX unit to the input on either the Bose home theatre system or the Bose speaker system?
    Now for the set-up questions......
As I said, I'm using the time capsule as my wireless router for the home network. What steps do I follow to integrate the AX unit into my existing wireless network ? Is it possible once the AX unit is set-up to take it and plug it in different spots around the house to stream iTunes ?
I'm sorry for the basic questions...i'm a bit new at the apple products and want to get this right the first time!
I just bought my first mac after many years with pcs and am absolutely loving it!
Thanks in advance for the guidance!
    Mike

mikebag, Welcome to the discussion area!

  • Setup an Airport Express without an ISP's modem

First, I have to thank you to everyone who is taking the time to help me with this.
I am planning to buy an Airport Express but I have a question and it is a deal breaker for me. Is it possible to setup the AE without my ISP's modem? here is my actual situation to make me more clear:
I am from México city and here there is no Apple retail Stores so no Apple Geniuses and the premum resellers are just... well dumb. So I contract an Internet service with a company named TELMEX and these guys gave me a Huawei Modem, it connects with an RJ11 plug an works as a router and WIFI access point, but this modem is just garbage, so I bought a CISCO Router and put them in bridge, the Huawei on PPoE and the CISCO just made work as local router. Everything went OK until I bought an Apple TV and an iPhone 5, the Airplay features are useless with my actual setup (just an example) apparently the CISCO's firewall block the ports that Airplay uses besides the CISCO doesn't have a N standar for the WIFI, so I decide to buy a new router. Before to continue, here is more or less my actual setup
INTERNET----> HUAWEI(no DHCP, no WIFI, rang 192.168.1.x,PPOE)----> CISCO(DHCP, WIFI, range 10.0.0.x) -----> All my devices
So my plan is to adquiere a Router that brings WIFI class N, enhanced security features and it works as a modem, I've seen other CISCO that could make the work but I don't want more problems with the "Apple features" such as Airplay caused by the port blocking. I know the Airport Express is already prepared to work with all the "Apple features" also attaching my sound device would be awesome, but if it doesn't works as a Modem I won't buy it. Here is the setup I want.
INTERNET---->Airport Express -----> All my devices
Does anyone knows if it is possible?
Again, thanks for the ssistance and sorry if my english is misspelled or wrong sentenced, it is not my born lenguaje.
Best regards and happy New Year.

Well that is dissapointing to be honest, well, thanks for the help. By the way, for what you saying applies to the newest model... right? cause I already know the old one wasnt able to do what I want.

  • Getting Windows PC to see wireless Airport Express printer in mixed network

I have a wireless network that has been working well. Base station is a SMC wireless router with two Macs connected via Ethernet, a MacBook and a Dell Windows XP joining in wirelessly. No problems. I recently added a Canon Pixma i4200 connected to an Airport Express in client mode. I set up the Airport Express via the MacBook and have no problem printing wireless to the Canon from the MacBook.
The question is how to set up the Dell Windows XP system to see the Canon printer? We tried installing the Canon print driver, but it really wants the printer to be plugged into the PC and won't complete the driver installation. We'll go ahead and plug it in for the setup I guess and then disconnect it. Since I already configured the Airport Express via the MacBook, I didn't want to try to set it up via the Dell PC, but is that likely to help?
This network is such a mixed bag, I think I'm lucky to have everything working as well as it does. Happy to be able to print wirelessly to the new Canon from the MacBook, but my wife wants to be able to print to this printer from her Dell upstairs. The nice feature of the Canon is that it prints duplex.
    thanks for any help

  • Time Capsule and 2008 Airport Express

I'm getting a Time Capsule 2TB and I have a 2008 AirPort Express. Here are my questions: Will I be able to connect a 2008 Airport Express to the current Time Capsule. Will the connection speed of my AirPort Express affect the rest of the devices connecting to the Time Capsule? I remember that the earlier Express was not compatible with the Airport Extreme and I had to get the faster Express. Thanks.

We assume that you plan to use the AirPort Express to extend the signal from the Time Capsule.
After you have the new Time Capsule set up as your main router, temporarily locate the AirPort Express near the Time Capsule
Power up the AirPort Experss for a few minutes and then hold in the reset button on the device for 10 seconds and release. Allow a full minute for the AirPort Express to restart to a slow, blinking amber light.
Click the AirPort icon at the top of the Mac's screen and wait a second or two for the heading of New AirPort Base Station to appear. Just below that, click directly on the AirPort Express.
AirPort Setup will open up automatically and guide you through. Once the AirPort Express is set up, move it to a location that is approximately half way between the Time Capsule and area that needs more wireless coverage.
Power up the Express and check things out. You may need to experiment by moving the Express a bit closer to the Time Capsule or further away depending on the quality of the signal that the Express receives.
Remember that the wireless speed from the Time Capsule will be dropping off by the time that it reaches the Express, and the Express can only extend the speed of connection that it receives. So, devices that connect to the Express are going to be running at a lower speed than devices that connect to the Time Capsule.
You can avoid the speed drop at the AirPort Express if you can connect it to the Time Capsule using a wired Ethernet cable connection, since there is no speed loss in a wire.

  • Wired computers unable to see printer on Airport Express...help?

    Hi all,
I recently set up an Airport Extreme on our office network to offer wireless network access piggybacked on our wired router. I then purchased an Airport Express which I was planning on using as a wireless print server for our Canon i9900 for all office computers connecting wired or wirelessly, which would interface with the network via the Airport Extreme Base Station.
I have configured the Express as an extension of the existing Airport network, and attached the printer to it via USB. All the computers in the office which have airport cards onboard can see and print from the printer, which is great. The problem is that all of the computers connecting to the network via wires are unable to see the printer (this is under both 10.3.x and 10.4.x, all airport software completely updated.) The Extreme base station shows up for all office computers in their Airport Admin Utility, AND if the printer is connected directly to the Extreme Base Station via USB, all computers can see the printer over Bonjour/Rendevous.
Anybody have ideas as to how I can get my wired machines to see the printer on the Airport Express?
    Thanks!!

  • Wireless printing through Airport Express stops after a few pages

I have a Canon MP780, which I tried hooking up to my Airport Express USB. Installation seemed to work smoothly with the Airport Utility, and it printed a test page just fine. However, when I printed a longer document, something kacked after a few pages (a communications error).
Hooking it up is a hassle (have to go through a wall to get to the AE/DSL modem setup), and I ripped it apart after upgrading the canon drivers to no avail. I'll try it again to get the exact error messages if there's more than a snowballs chance in hades that this might work, but thought I'd at least find out if it's hopeless or not before throwing more time at this.
    Any help's appreciated... many thanks.

There has been similar posts on this forum regarding wireless stability. A few have indicated that there printing was fine until the recent Airport Client Update 2009-002. If you check your System Prefs > Software Update > Installed Software list, have you also run this update?

  • IMac no longer connects to airport express

Good evening. Thank you for looking.
Running an iMac 2010 with Yosmite latest.
Yesterday, I could not wifi connect to my airport express.
iPhone and iPad and laptop all connect to it great.
I've tried deleting the wifi route in settings/network and re-entering it with Password. No Good.
Funny thing is, that I seem to be able to connect to other local WiFi's around my house. (passworded)
But for my express, it simply keeps asking me to run dx and then offers no real information.
I've also tried changing ip from DHCP to manual and no good there either.
Any ideas please. I'm really going nutz here.
    Thank you again.
