Airport Express, iphone4 and ipad2 can't see it

I have a home network that consists of a Zxyel 416 router that provides wired and wireless connections.
I have a PC running windows 7 and iphone 4 and ipad2 both running ios 4.3.5
I bought an airport express to allow me to send music from the ios devices to a speaker setup.
I initially attach the AE to my network via an ethernet cable, put in the CD in my PC and ran the setup. It found there was a firmware update for the AE and installed it.
I used the airport utility to configure the AE to attach to my existing wireless network, which has NO encryption at all, and to enable airplay.
I then remove the ethernet cable, disconnect the AE from the mains, move it close to my speaker and plug it in, attaching the speak cable.
The AE powers up and goes solid green.
Itunes can OFTEN (but not always) see the AE speaker and I can send music to it.
Neither the iphone nor the ipad offer me the airplay icon in the ipod player (or any other airplay app I have), so they are not seeing an airplay devices.
I tried rebooting both the phone and the ipad, and as part of that updated to ios 4.3.5 on both.
I have turned off the firewall on my router.
Does anyone have any other suggestions as how I can get the iphone and ipad to see the AE airplay speaker, and also to get the PC to see it reliably.
As another data point, the airport utility often doesn't automatically see the AE, and I have to do a manual config, supplying the IP address of the AE for it to be found by the airport utility.
Do the iphone and ipad have to be getting their wireless connection from the AE for them to be able to use its Airplay speakers ? (they currently attach to my main router, with the AE just also attaching to the main router wirelessly).

Got 7.1 installed on the AEBS... initially I had the same problem of the DSL line dying the second the Vaio connected... but after a while it was green lights all the way, and I have crystal-clear reception on both computers.
What was the difference in having 7.1 as opposed to 7.1.1? And does this mean that I won't be able to upgrade the software on the AEBS from now on??

In addition to an Airport Extreme, I have an older airport express hooked to the stereo input to stream music from my macbook. It has been working for 3-4 years but now it has disappeared from my network. I have hit the tiny reset button on the bottom. The unit blinks green for a second and them goes solid amber. Still not seen on network. Any help would be appreciated.

Unfortunately, this is almost always a sign of an internal power supply problem on the Express.
Try a Factory Default Reset as a last resort as follows:
Power off the Express
Wait a few minutes
Hold in the reset button first and keep holding it for an additional 9-10 seconds while you simultaneously plug the Express back in to power
Release the reset button after the hold period and hopefully, it will restart correctly.
If the the Express is operating normally, it will be solid amber for about 30 seconds, then switch to slow blinking amber. That is your sign that the Express has been reset correctly, and it can now be reconfigured again.
If the Factory Default Reset does not help after a few tries, the Express is defective and will need to be replaced.

Airport Utility on Mac and iPad can't see Airport Extreme or AEs

Airport Utility on my Mac can't see my Extreme base station or two extending AEs. I thought this might be because I've yet to upgrade my Mac software, so tried using Airport Utility on my iPad--same story. The Mac lists the Airports but with yellow ! warnings; the iPad just keeps searching. Yet the Internet is OK (and shows up with a green light) and I can connect to everything on the network.
Possibly unrelated, but our two Macs have each gotten the "IP address assigned to another device" message. Click Ok and it goes away and everything works, no rebooting or lease renewing needed.
It's weird. Not critical, as everything works, but worrisome. Ideas?

I had the same problem. My AirPort utility in Windows would not detect the AirPort Extreme until I was already connected to the internet. I have two routers in my house. When I connected to my other router and was connected to the internet via that, then my AirPort Extreme showed up in my AirPort.

One thing that might work is .... Go to the purchased tab in the app store. Tap on an app that needs an update. That will take you to the app description page. Tap on the app icon in there and see if you can download the update. Could be very time consuming, but it might work.
This is a recently talked about trick that might work. Its more for the "Cant' connect to the iTunes Store" issue, but you can try it.
Go to Settings>General>Date and time. Change the date and time to some time in the future and see if that helps.
Lastly, you can always update the apps in iTunes on your computer and them sync them to the iPad.

Unfortunately, you won't be able to. In order to do so, you would have to configure both the AirPort Express and the other wireless router for a WDS. Since it will unlikely that the other router is another AirPort, nor will you have the ability to administer it, you won't be able to get this accomplished.

Your problem might stem from having your Airport create a "private" or "hidden" network or by having turned off the wireless functionality of the AE.
If you think you might have setup a private network, but don't know the name, or turned off the wireless, you can:
- connect your MBP by ethernet cable; then,
- adjust the WiFi settings to enable wireless clients; or
- adjust the Wireless security to disable a hidden or private network.
If all else fails, perform a hard factory reset by holding down the physical reset button in the back of the AE with a paperclip, and redo the setup.

Airport Express Pops and Clicks

I bought an airport express about a month ago with the goal of adding Airplay support to our living room. So far it's worked well except that it pops and clicks (sometimes very loudly) every 20 minutes or so. I've read that electrical interference may be the cause but 4 different surge protectors and line conditioners have done nothing to fix the problem.
I'm not using iTunes. Only streaming from iphones and an ipad.
Are there any additinal steps I can take before returining the unit?

If it also pops and clicks when you plug in the headphones, that points to a defective AirPort Express that will need to be replaced.
If you do not hear the pops and clicks on the headphones, then you know the AirPort Express is good and the problem is likely somewhere between the AirPort Express, amp and speakers.
Sometimes a compressor on a refrigerator or air conditioner will send spikes though the AC lines that are picked up in the amp, no matter what kind of surge supressor you have. I have had this problem, and had to replace the separate amp I was using.

I hate the new downloads-in-a-tab scheme. This was an unnecessary change in my book (if it aint broke, don't "fix it").
So in order to get it back, I performed the about:config browser.download.useToolkitUI change, but now all I get is a blank download window that pops up every time I download something.
Is there something else that I need to do? I've checked the change and it was saved, but it didn't resolve my issue as much as it just caused me a new issue.

Replying to my own post - heh. I downloaded iExplorer (http://www.macroplant.com/iexplorer/) which allowed me access to the files on the phone and there was the phantom movie in the DCIM folder. Deleted it, and all is well - although I still have 0.65gb of Other in iTunes.....

Now when I try too connect my iPhone 4 to iTunes on my computer at home an error message comes up saying that I have to unlock my iPhone 4 for it to communicate to my device.
But the problem is that I can't unlock my iPhone 4 because I'm unable to see the key pad and my touch screen no longer responds when I touch it.
I just want to reset my iPhone 4 back to its Factory Settings & start all over from the beginning.
How can I unlock my iPhone 4 with iTunes on my computer or any other option you suggest me trying.

If you have had a "local guy "repair your iphone you will not get any support from Apple for warranty OR post warranty
If Verizon return it to Apple it wil not be handled by Apple
If Verizon also use unauthorised repairers you may be lucky
(Apple do not sell parts to local guys or anyone else )

Now ALL of my photos are grayed out and I can't see ANY of my pictures unless I click on each grayed out photo individually and open them, ALL of the thumbnails are greyed out. It is THE WORST!! Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - rebuild your iPhoto library database

How do I get rid of "Open All In Tabs" from the Bookmarks dropdown menu? [STUPIDITY] Also, my bookmarks run off the bottom of the screen and I can't see them all.

The bottom of my bookmarks in one subcategory extends beyond the screen on my TV and I can't see them all. I can't see where any arrow to extend the bookmarks to the bottom of the list is so I've been clicking below the last visible bookmark in that list and I hit that STUPID "Open All In Tabs" crap (then everything locks up). WHO IN THE WORLD WOULD WANT TO OPEN ALL OF THEIR BOOKMARKS AT ONCE???? Seems really, really stupid to me. And why won't the bookmarks drop down list allow me to see all of the bookmarks I've saved on that topic? It does not automatically scroll down as large lists on other drop down menus routinely do.

I agree. It is a brainless moronic subcategory!!! I would love to get rid of it!
