Airport Express & IPV6 Question

I've been using my airport express (V6.3) to print wirelessly and to stream itunes to my stereo. I have it connected through my AirPort router. It is not an extension of my wireless network. Everything worked fine until the other day.
I can still print to my printer wirelessly but itunes refused to connect to my remote speakers, stating there was an error connecting.
After researching the issue online, I disable my IPV6 setting on my AirPort and I can now stream to my stereo again.
I have a few questions I hope to get answered.
1. Why did this problem start happening out of the blue after years of using the airport express?
2. Did I do the right thing by turning off IPV6? Am I compromising any security or performance?
3. Should I have remedied the problem in some other way?
As always - thanks in advance.
Steve

to answer your question,
1. some devices support IPV6 and some don't. so if you have some that do and some that don't then your devices can not communicate. look at it this way. if we are talking on a cell phone, then we can communicate clearly. if i were to put down the phone and pick up a radio and try to talk to you and you dont have a radio then my message will not get to you. understand?
2. you did do the right thing by disabling IPV6. until your entire network is ready for IPV6 then it is best to just disable it. the only thing that will happen by you disabling IPV6 is your connection time will speed up by maybe a second or two. but thats about it. it will not effect any security at all.
3.you did the best possible thing to your network. that is the very same thing that i would have done.

  • Airport Express capability question

I believe the answer to my question is no, but I thought I would make sure. Can the Airport Express be used to connect my Blu Ray player (downstairs) with to my network wirelessly (wireless router is upstairs)? I guess it would be used as a bridge, but I'm wanting the Ethernet port on the Airport to be active and be connected to my Blu Ray player. I'm basically trying to not have to run a big cable through my house or move my router. Thanks!

Hello fishman77. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Can the Airport Express be used to connect my Blu Ray player (downstairs) with to my network wirelessly (wireless router is upstairs)?
Maybe. In order to connect wirelessly to the wireless router upstairs and enable the AirPort Express Base Station's (AX) Ethernet port for the Blu Ray player, the upstairs router will need to be another AirPort base station. This is so that you can create a Wireless Distribution System (WDS) between the two AirPorts. Very few non-AirPorts are WDS-compatible with AirPorts.

  • Qwest DSL and Airport Express connection question

I've recently purchased DSL service from Qwest and I'm using an Actiontec GT701 modem (also supplied by Qwest). When plugging the ethernet cable directly into my iMac, I can easily connect to the internet. However, when I plug the ethernet cable into my AirPort Express and try to connect wirelessly, I've not had any success. The AirPort on my iMac easily locates the AX signal (as it will also do for the Qwest modem), but subsequent attempts to wirelessly connect to the internet do not work. I repeatedly get an error message: "Unable to connect to the internet" (or something similar).
Qwest customer support has not been able to provide any solutions.
Any suggestions will be most appreciated. Thanks very much.

Also, one other question: the DSL with Qwest is set up as a "PPPoA", and the iMac seems to be looking for a "PPPoE". Are these two compatible, or should I perform any additional set-up/configuration changes with the AX or my iMac?
No these represent two different methods of encapsulating the Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP).
PPPoE = Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet
PPPoA = Point-to-Point Protocol over ATM
This may represent a problem as, far as I know, AirPort products don't support PPPoA. Typically only the device directly connected to the ISP or the modem needs to be set up for either PPPoE/PPPoA. All other would use "Using DHCP."
I'm afraid I'm not too familiar with PPPoA setup. Maybe someone else in these Discussions can chime in.
You mentioned that you tried to change the DSL over to PPPoE. Is that an option that is available to you with the DSL service your ISP provides?

  • Airport Express connection questions

This is what I am trying to do. Can I share an internet connection to a computer that does not have a wireless connection through an Airport Express connected to the wireless router and an ethernet cable to the computer?

    No the following also work
    - a Linksys WRT54G or WRT54GS (not latest versions v5)
    - a Belkin Belkin F5D7230-4 and F5D7231
    - one specific model from SMC (can't find model number right now)
    - one specific model from Buffalo
    - BT Voyager 2100
For wireless routers not on this short list - not possible.
In particular, it will not work with any WiFi routers from D-Link or Netgear.

  • Airport Express & Ethernet question........

I'm trying to advance my network. The present network consists of of a DSL connection with a a graphite base station, an AE connected to the home stereo for music and a AE connected to a printer. We have another desktop in the room with the AE/pinter and wondering if/how I can use an ethernet from the AE to the desktop to get it connected to the internet.
I've had the network set up with a router to the desktop but needed to move the graphite base to expand the coverage to my deck. Problem is, I've now lost the internet connection to the desktop.
    Any help would be great....thanks!!

It is possible using WDS, however not in your current network configuration.
One of the Airport Express units would need to be connected direct to the DSL connection (instead of the Graphite).

  • AirPort Express - many questions

    Hi there.
I hope you guys can help me with a few problems:
         1. Do i have to wire the AirPort Express from my wi-fi router, or is an ethernet cable from a non-wi-fi modem good enough?
         2. My amplifier is an old "Beomaster 2000". It has a 5-DIN input. I guess I'm going for a 5-DIN to 3,5 jack cable?
         3. If the jack output on the AirPort Express is ocupied, can i connect my Sony TV to it? I want my Sony TV sound to go through monitors hooked up to the beomaster 2000. Or what kind of solution should i go for? Jack from TV to phono-in on the Beomaster?
I hope that is not too complex, and I hope you have some answers!

Is this a "phono plug"? I'm not from the States, so unfortunately, no fancy Walmarts.
    No don't use that one.
The only thing I am uncertain about is which input your TV is using. If it is using Tape 1 then it is easy and all you need is a 3.5mm male to male audio cable such as this (buy an appropriate length though):
    http://www.av-cables.dk/minijack-kabler/standard-minijack-til-minijack-kabel-0-2 5-m.html
If that is similar to the cable your TV is already using you will need this

    and this

...unless you can find one cable already with those connectors.

  • Airport express networking question

Can I plug a computer into the ethernet port of Airport Express with a cable, then connect to my Time Capsule via wireless?

    You can do this IF.....
    1) The Time Capsule is providing a wireless network
    2) The AirPort Express is a version 802.11n
    3) The AirPort Express is located where it can receive a strong wireless signal from the Time Capsule
    4) The AirPort Express is configured to "Extend a wireless network", (which also enables the Ethernet port)

  • Airport Express - Basic Question

I have a first generation Airport Express. I also have a wireless router. I also have an airport card in my 2008 Mac Pro.
Is it possible to be able to set up the airport express unit, to function so I can plug my "non-wireless" computer into it to get access to the internet?
If so - how is this done? I have tried a couple different things, but to no avail. I am a veteran Mac user.

Sorry, but I'm not aware of any 2Wire products that are WDS-compatible with the AirPorts. However, if your wired computer has a spare USB port, you may want to consider a device like the Linksys WUSB54G as another option.

  • AirPort Express settings question

I recently bought an AirPort Express. All the devices at my house that use wi-fi are an iPhone 4, iPad 1st generation and a 2010 13-inch MacBook Pro. Which radio mode is best 2.4GHz or 5GHz? I posted an image below of the options I have. Also which channel and wireless security setting is best? I'm asking because I live in an apartment with a few other routers in the building. If there are any other settings that I should adjust to make it more secure please let me know. Thank you!

One thing I did was enter the mac addresses for each component that I wanted to access the Airport Express, and restrict access to those devices only. This is great if you really want to restrict usage of your network, since even if someone gets the access password, they will be dropped when they try to connect!
    MAC Address Access Control
Every AirPort and wireless card has a unique Media Access Control (MAC) address. For
AirPort and AirPort Extreme Cards, the MAC address is sometimes referred to as the
AirPort ID. Support for MAC address access control lets administrators set up a list of
MAC addresses and restrict access to the network to only those users whose MAC
addresses are in the access control list.
You can get that info here
The bad side to this is that if you have a lot of friends coming over to use your network, tracking all the mac addresses will become a huge headache.

  • Airport express - netopia question

    hi
i recently bought an airport express unit for the purposes of extending the range of my existing broadband signal in my house. There is poor reception in the downstairs area. The broadband connection is located upstairs and is a Netopia 3347WG box (supplied by Eircom who are the broadband providers in Ireland). I can not get the airport express unit to communicate with the netopia box. Can anyone offer any assistance as to what to do??
    Tks in advance.

Yes it will work if you buy an airport base station. My neighbor and I share our connection and he was getting a weak signal. He bought an airport express for the same reason you did, but we couldn't get it to work with my current wireless router. I decided to go ahead and try out a base station and it worked like a charm.

  • Airport Express Setup Question

I'm about to buy the new Airport Express, but before I do I want to make sure it will do what I want. I have some G devices and I would like to isolate them from my N devices since my understanding is if you run G and N devices on the same wireless network they will not run at the fastest N speeds.
My main router needs to be in a corner of my house b/c that's where my FiOS internet connection is. In contrast, my Airport Express is more centralized and is better placed to reach all devices throughout my house. All my G devices are within range of my Linksys and so what I propose is to have all my G devices connect to my Linksys router and then connect an Airport Express via Ethernet to a port on my router and have all my N devices then connect to the Airport Express (I'm pretty sure I just need to set up the Airport Express in bridge mode and have it "create a new wireless network").
I just want to make sure I'm getting the maximum wireless speeds. If I set it up as described, will there be any degradation in wireless speeds compared to having my N devices connect directly to my Linksys? Is there a better setup I should be considering? I'd really appreciate any thoughts and advice.

    1. Should I expect that my speeds will be the same with this setup compared to the speeds I would get if I had only N devices connected to my Linksys and didn't use the AE at all?
This would depend on where the "n" devices are located in relation to the wireless router. The wireless signal slows down the further that it moves from a wireless router or as it encounters any obstructions in the signal path between the router and the connecting device.
For example, if the wireless signal must pass through 2-3 typical sheetrock walls to reach the computer 25-30 feet away, you will likely lose half or more of the speed capability on that connection.
    2. Would a speed test be an accurate assessment of that, i.e., if I connect wirelessly to my Linksys and then run a speed test and then immediately after at the exact same location do the same with my AE
You could get a general idea by testing this way. I would expect that the speed would be about the same comparing the two routers since the WiFi broadcast strength is limited by law.  The Linksys might do a bit better if it has external antennas.
The exception to this might be if you are using the 5 GHz "n" signal on the Express. 5 GHz signals are not as strong as 2.4 GHz signals, so things slow down faster on a 5 GHz band.
It makes sense to connect to the best quality signal if you can.
Keep in mind if you are connecting to the Internet that your wireless speeds will only be as fast as your Internet connection service plan allows.  For example, if you have a 20 Mbps Internet  connection,  that is far less than the speed capability of even "g" devices (54 Mbps).  So, having faster "n" devices won't buy you anything if the Internet connection is limited to 20 Mbps.

  • Another Time Capsule + Airport Express (G) question

Searched through the forums but could not find an answer -- so here goes.
    I have:
    - Time Capsule
    - older Airport Express (B/G, not N)
    - MacBook Air
    - iPhone
    - Wii
    I would like to:
    - Connect my cable modem to my Time Capsule, and have the Time Capsule run exclusively on N at 5ghz
    - Use my Airport Express to stream music to my receiver AND be the base station for B/G devices on my network, such as the iPhone and Wii. The Airport Express sits right next to the Time Capsule, so they can be connected with an Ethernet cable (need be)
With those goals mentioned, how do I set this up? I don't want to get the MBAir to fall back on G, as it is doing now.
Thank you much for your help.

Yes that will work. It has been referred to many, many posts as "dual-band" networks.
Configure the Time Capsule and AirPort Express (AX) to have different SSIDs (network names) and different encryption passwords. Don't tell your MacBook Air the password of the slower network.
Configure the AX to act as a bridge (not sharing a single IP address).

  • Airport Express temperature question

I am wondering what the highest operating temperature can be for the airport express?  I have a situation where the temperature will get to 120 degrees and although the tech specs stipulate 95 degrees there is usually an engineering factor/range that will accomodate for some degree of variation.  I would like to ensure that is operates reliably for the short and long term under the higher temperature.

Maybe there is a range, but I do believe the technical specs stipulate the "maximum" safe operating temperature. That nominal temperature is 95º F. Storage temperature can be as high as 140º F.
If you operate it at 120º F you must assume the risk that it will fail earlier than its expected life. And, most likely any damage during the warranty period would not be covered because it was operated outside of its stated maximum operating temperature.

  • G4 / airport express connection question from a newbie

    hi all,
    i have:
    1. a power mac g4 (without an airport card) and
    2. an airport express unit running off our broadband cable modem that feeds wireless to our PC laptop elsewhere in the house.
i'd like to know if i can connect my g4 to the airport express unit to allow it to receive the broadband signal from the modem. the airport express has a ethernet port (used by the cable modem) and a USB port.
could it be as simple as connecting the USB port on the AE to a USB port on my mac?
thanks for taking the time to read this. please let me know if you need any more info on my setup.
    cheers,
    katy

    Hi,
Welcome to the Apple Discussion Forums!
The USB port on the Airport Express is for sharing a printer within a wireless network.
I would assume your PC laptop has a wireless card in it. That is how the PC "sees" the wireless network. You'll need to get an Airport card for the G4 in order for it to join the wireless network.
Another way to go is to get a hub and run ethernet cable from the DSL/Cable modem to the hub. A second ethernet cable from the Airport Express unit to the hub would set-up your wireless network. A third ethernet cable to the G4 would then get the G4 connected. Hence the G4 would not be wireless.
You should be able to pick up an old Airport card on eBay fairly cheaply.
