Airport Express is going to make me mad!

Hello everyone, I tried to find an answer for my problem browsing around with the "search" function but nada.
Well, here's my problem:
I've bought 2 Airport Express, currently firmware 6.2 (default). The main one is connected to a dsl router which provides the internet connection. The 2nd airport is connected to the first airport to give signal to all of my house. I set up all the options and parameters, activated WDS etc.. wireless is on. My computer: equipped with a fresh install of Windows XP SP2 and a PCI Belkin 802.11b/g card ( F5D7000 )set up with DHCP, windows firewall off.
The card detects the wifi connection (WPA-PSK encryption with custom password ) and connects to the nearest airport... well, at a certain point ( after..5/7/20/100/200 minutes ) the card losses signal and the network becomes unreachable ("invisible"!) . The only way to re-find the network is to disable and re-enable the pci card or to reboot the computer. I've tried to upgrade drivers of my card, forced 802.11b, robustness on etc. There are no interferences, the signal is excellent, I've tried many channels.
I'm just surfing on the internet and "puff!"..connection lost and unreachable.. so frustrating you know! Unfortunatly it happens so often!
Any idea?
Thank you very much and have a good day
Richard

I'm not sure of your familiarity with the Airport Express, so if I rattle off something that seems obvious, apologies in advance.
Turning on 'interference robustness' despite its deceptive terminology, reduces the range of your Airport. You might want to enter the Airport Admin Utility and under the Airport Pane, click on Wireless Options -- lower the multicast rate and increase both Airport Express tranmission power to 100%.
Higher multicast rates also decreases Airport range.
Then ensure that your Airport Express is set to 802.11b/g or 802.11b compatible (whichever depending on the config of your WiFi receiver cards).
The Airport WiFi equipment, and/or, WiFi equipment in general are acutely susceptible to glass; so if there is a lot of glass doors/panels in your house this may be the cause of erractic WiFi signal strength.
In addition, embedded plumbing and electrical wiring, may also produce similar effects to glass.
Finally, note when the cut offs occur. If a pattern emerges, the interference could be caused by an external source, beyond your control. Check around your neighbourhood, for electric interference -- electric gates, neighbour's cordless phone, etc.

Apple's Wireless Diagnostics may supply some additional helpful information.
To use it, hold an option key while you click your Mac's Wi-Fi icon, and choose Open Wireless Diagnostics...
The following authentication dialog will appear:
Authenticate with your Admin password, then click the Continue button in the following:

  • HT1515 why does my airport express keep going offline?

i use airport for air play but it keeps going into flashing amber light about every week. why?

I found on some non-Apple tech sites some interesting info. One guy was having the same exact issues and wrote a script to see what was going on between the Airport base station and the Airport Expresses. It appears that the two devices were having security verification issues and that is why the Airport Expresses get getting knocked offline.   In other words, when they talk with each other they fail the security verification and the Airport Expresses go haywire.
So the solution is to turn off the security on both the Airport base station and the Airport Expresses through the Airport Utility. Then, on the Airport base station you check the option to create a closed network.  In other words, your wi-fi network is now unprotected but it is not broadcasting to anyone that it is there. From then on, you will have to choose "other" on your laptops/iPads/iPhones/etc and type in your wi-fi network's name rather than just choosing your wi-fi network from a list of options.
I did this a few weeks back and I have had zero issues since the very moment I did the above steps. The network is 100% reliable and faster. No more rebooting. Is it a tad bit unprotected?  Yes, but no one knows the network is there. If someone is smart enough to be looking for non-broadcasting wi-fi networks and finding yours, then they are sophisticated enough to defeat your normal security protocols anyway. Maybe if Apple ever decides to fix this problem, which appears they might not be interested in doing, then you could go back to normal security protocols. But until then, this works wonderfully. Give it a try and see.

  • Will running both airport express and apple tv make things better?

I want to be able to choose music from my iphone 4, ipod and ipad2 and play them on my in house speaker system. Now I have been told my different people that an apple express will do the job great, but add the apple tv to take it that extra level. What do you guys and girls think? Any feedback or comments would be great.
    Thank you Steve

Now I have been told my different people that an apple express will do the job great, but add the apple tv to take it that extra level
If you only want to stream audio, the AirPort Express will work fine for that purpose, as will an Apple TV. But, there is no real advantage in using the Apple TV for audio purposes only.
If you plan to stream both audio and video, or think that you may need video capability in the future,  the Apple TV would provide that "extra level" of capability.
In that regard, the Apple TV would be the product to choose if you want to "future proof" your network for the next few years or more.

  • Airport Express keeps going wrong in WDS mode

We run a wireless network with an Apple Extreme Base station, with an Airport Express to extend the network range.
At some point every day the computers connected to the network via the Airport Express loose connection with the network. To correct the problem the Express has to be restarted. This is a real pain, and the problem seems to be getting worse.
As far as I can work out the Express starts distributing the wrong IP address to the connected computers...
    Can some one help?

  • HT3728 my broadband speed has all of a sudden been reduced dramatically over the weekend. the isp asked me to eliminate my apple airport express base station to make sure that my 20mb band is being delivered which i did and confirmed so.

MY BROADBAND HAS BEEN REDUCED DRAMATICALLY IN MY HOME NETWORK USING MY AIRPORT EXTREME BASE STATION.
THIS HAPPENED  SO UNEXPECTEDLY OVER THE WEEKEND. I CALL MY ISP AND THEY SIMPLY TOLD ME TO ELIMINATE THE AIRPORT
EXTREME BASE  STATION  TO CONFIRM THAT  WHAT I  HAVE PURCHASED  IS BEING DELIVERED WHICH I  DID AND CONFIRMED.
MEANWHILE USING MY  NETWORK UNTIL LAST  FRIDAY EVERYTHING LOOKED  JUST  GREAT.
I  WONDER WHETHER  I WOULD HAVE TO   RESET MY  AIRPORT EXTREME TO FACTORY  SETTINGS TO RECONFIGURE  IT.

Hmm. Your ISP is incorrect in telling you that removing any of your routers on the local area network will have anything to do with the bandwidth performance that they provide you at the Internet modem. On the other hand, changing/removing networking equipment on your local network DOES affect bandwidth performance on that local network.
Most likely what the ISP is asking you to do is verify that you are getting their promised download/upload bandwidth at the modem. It appears that you did that and verified that you are getting the stated bandwidth.
So, we should take a look at why, when adding the AirPort Extreme, you are getting less.
First off, which AirPort Extreme model do you have? What is the make & model of the broadband modem that your ISP is providing you?
It is always a good idea to perform a complete power recycle of your networking equipment when introducing new hardware. Please check out the following AirPort User Tip for details.
(p.s. Please don't use all capital letters when you post. It appears to readers that you are shouting. Thx!)

  • Airport Express Ethernet to WLAN

I want to connect a Express to a white Extreme Base station (which has Internet access to cable modem) via Ethernet in order to bring WLAN service into another room (configurating both as a WDS network does not work, as between both stations due to distance and walls a wireless connection is not reliable.) (This kind of WDS combination works with another Extreme in another more close room)
I made the setup with Airport Admin app. This one leaves the Wireless mode of the Express to OFF.
    what does that mean:
    A) only the wireless interconnection "backwards" to the Extreme is off (because Ethernet does this job to connect both?)
    B) or the whole wireless service of Extreme is off?
if B is answered with YES, what is the correct setup for my purpose?

I want to connect a Express to a white Extreme Base station (which has Internet access to cable modem) via Ethernet in order to bring WLAN service into another room...
Then you do not want to disable the wireless portion of the AirPort Express (AX).
To make this work you simply configure the AX to
operate as a bridge (not sharing a single IP address).
use the same wireless SSID (Network Name) as the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS).
use the same wireless encryption type/level/password as the AEBS.
use a different channel as far from the one used by the AEBS as possible.

  • AirPort Express do not save configuration

Hi! Recently I've bought an AirPort Express. Unfortunately, it does not let me to configure it. I'm using AirPort Utility on my MacBook Pro to do it. I'm getting to the point where it supposed to save the settings, but something goes wrong. After that I can not see AirPort, unless I factory reset it, and everything starts over again.
    What should I do?

It would help us if we knew what device that you were trying to connect the AirPort Express to.  The make and model number would be very useful.
On your Mac.....please check a setting as follows:
Open System Preferences (gear icon on the dock)
    Open Network
Click on WiFi on the left to highlight it
Click Advanced at the lower right of the window
    Click the TCP/IP tab
Check to make sure that the setting for iPv6 is set to Link Local Only
Click OK, then click Apply if you make any changes
Then do the same procedure for Ethernet

  • HT4260 I am planning to extend my network via "roaming" option using an Ethernet cable as the second router is not within range of the primary router. My question is can I use an airport express as the additional router ? My pirimary router is an extreme.

Under the roaming option mentioned in the KB do both routers have to be the same ? Or can one be an express and the other an extreme ?

Setup of the AirPort Express is going to be much easier than you might imagine, although we'll go step by step here.
First, power on the AirPort Express for a few minutes, then hold in the reset button on the Express for 9-10 seconds and release. Allow a full minute for the Express to restart to a slow blinking amber light.
Connect the Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on the AirPort Extreme to the WAN "O" port on the AirPort Express. I assume that you have previously tested the Ethernet cable to make sure that it is working correctly.
On your Mac, click on the AirPort icon at the top of the screen and wait a few seconds for a listing of New AirPort Base Station. Just below that, click directly on AirPort Express.
AirPort Setup will open up automatically, take a minute to analyze the network, then announce that the Express will be configured to extend the AirPort Extreme network.
Enter a device name that you want to use for the Express and click Next
Now AirPort Utility will confirm that the Express is being configured to extend using Ethernet.
When you see the message of Setup Complete, click Done
That's it.  It might surprise you though, to learn that the Express has actually been configured to "create" a wireless network in this type of setup.

  • Quick and easy airport express question [expanding my network]

I have an airpot express unit, it works great, i have plugged in to my internet using an ethernet cable, I just want to know something: can i expand my network?? make it bigger?
I have airport express in my room, can i plugg another airport express on another room, make settings so that new airport express joins my current network, and like expand my internet connection, my problem is that i live in a house made out of concrete so, walls are really big and not thin at all, so when i go downstairs i loose my internet connecion, can i expand this with another airport express without having to connect the ethernet cable to the new airport express? I hope its not to confusing

Yes you can, when you plug the 2nd Airport Express in there is an option to join or extend an wireless network. This is what you would select to expand / extend your existing wireless network to other areas that may have a weaker signal.

  • Airport Express no longer joins network

Greetings, I have a cable modem internet connection; I use an older Airport Extreme (802.11n, without Time Capsule) to make a local wifi network with WPA2 Personal security, and an older Airport Express (802.11 b/g, firmware 6.3) to connect a laser printer in a different room.
All was working well until two days ago when access to the internet disappeared. I reset the modem, confirmed that the cable connection was working by plugging a laptop directly into the modem by ethernet, determining that the problem was the Airport Extreme. I discovered the 7.5.2 firmware update which I uploaded, and all seemed well.
However, the 27" iMac upstairs only connected to Airport intermittently; it appeared to have been duplicated in name, as well as only recognized the Airport Express. I've since been able to correct that problem, however, now the Airport Express no longer connects to the Airport Extreme network.
I've tried soft resets (unplugging then plugging back in) and hard resets (pressing the reset button with a paperclip until the amber light flashes, then reconfiguring the device). I've tried setting the Airport Express both just to join the network (printer sharing) as well as extend the network; I also reverted the Airport Extreme's firmware to 7.4.2 which works perfectly well. However, now after each successive attempt to reconfigure the Airport Express to join the network, Airport Utility says that the Airport Express has been successfully updated and will restart, which it never does - it simply flashes an amber light, and Airport Utility eventually times out and says that it was unable to find the Airport Express after restarting, noting that the settings have been successfully updated, but that there is a problem re-joining the wireless network/finding the device. Notably, the Airport Express no longer appears in the left hand list of wireless devices in Airport Utility.
    Help!!

    Hi pslebow,
You make it sound like there was no change, then suddenly the Airport Express 802.11g lost connection to the wireless network and you can't get it back.
What network security is your wireless network using?
From the specification sheet, "…When joining an existing wireless network, AirPort Express only supports WPA-Personal."
    AirPort Express - Technical Specifications
Please make sure your router security is set to match.
iOS and OS X: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points - Apple Support
If you have older Wi-Fi devices on your network that don't support WPA2 Personal (AES), a good second choice is WPA/WPA2 Mode (often referred to as WPA Mixed Mode). This mode will allow newer devices to use the stronger WPA2 AES encryption, while still allowing older devices to connect with older WPA TKIP-level encryption. If your Wi-Fi router doesn't support WPA/WPA2 Mode, WPA Personal (TKIP) mode is the next best choice.

  • Can I stream videos using airplay to appletv2 and play the audio thru stereo using airport express?

I have apple tv 2 connected to my HDTV.  I am streaming VEVO videos from iphone to ATV2.  Would like to play the audio through my sony stereo.  Would love to do it wirelessly if possible.    Can this be done?  Would airport express connected to stereo make this possible?  If not what are my options.

The only input ports I have on the stereo is a dmport, auxillary and headphone jacks.   I really would like to do this wireless.  If, instead of appletv2, I had google tv which VEVO uses could the airport express be used?  Seems like I recall reading somewhere that using 2 of them created a wireless connection for audio.  Is that right?
    Thanks for any advice.

  • Can't connect to Airport Express using Linksys WRE54g?

I am having problem connecting to Airport Express using Linksys WRE54G, under the following circumstances.
    Here's my setup.
I am using Linksys WAG200G modem/wireless router in the studies. My house is fairly big and very weak signal in living room. Hence I added Linksys WRE54G Wireless-G Range Expander in living room.
I have two HiFi. One in studies and the other in living room. macbook and external HDD where I store all my musics sit in studies.
I use Airport Express (AE1) to stream music from macbook to studies HiFi. Works fine.
So I connect AE1 to living room HiFi. Macbook still in studies. The problem is iTunes cannot connect to AE1 now. However I still able to detect AE1, open/change settings using Airport Utility on macbook in the studies.
Now I bring macbook to living room. AE1 works!
What I intend to setup is,
    1. WAG200G, macbook and external HDD in my studies.
    2. AE1 connect to studies HiFi. I am planning to get another Airport Express for living room HiFi.
    3. Control the playlist using iPhone Remote and listen music in living room.
    Question:
    1. Did iTunes connect directly to Airport Express without going thru network router?
    2. How should I setup Airport Express in this case?
Appreciate anyone who can help me on this. Thank you.

    pss.
actually, is it possible to do what i'm trying to do... the guy in the Apple store said that i can connect to the Netgear router for my internet connection, and Airfoil can separately connect to the Airport Express to play music...
the way i've set it up so far, i can do either, but i can't do both... or do i need to somehow connect both wireless stations together...??

  • Can't get Airport Express to restart after configuring

I can't believe how finicky the new Airport Express is (most recent.) I had successfully configured it to extend my Airport Extreme network wirelessly, but
because of lots of interference in my old house (wire lath in plaster walls,) I can't get it to extend my network very far wirelessly.
So I am now trying to extend it via ethernet. I plugged it into an ethernet cable which is plugged into one of the available ports on the Airport Extreme. Airport Utility recognized it, and I configured it to extend my regular network via ethernet cable. AU said I was successful and was restarting it. Unfortunately restart failed.
I reopened AU, but it couldn't see the Express. Unplugged the Express for 5 minutes and did a hard reset, holding it in for 10 sec after Express was plugged in.
Opened AU again. AU still can't see the Express.
Do I have to configure the Express to do what I want while it is plugged directly into my cable modem? I am reluctant to do this because it screws up my Airport Extreme connectivity evey time I do this.

Thanks for clarifying that for me.
In order to do what you want, you will need to know the name of the wireless network that the Extreme is producing, along with the password and exact type of wireless security that that the network using. I assume that you know the name of the wireless network and password.
If you need to find out exactly what type of security that the Extreme network is using, you will need to open AirPort Utility and click Manual Setup. Then click the Wireless tab below the row of icons to reveal the wireless settings page. Jot down the setting that you see for Wireless Security because you will need this to configure the AirPort Express.
Check to make sure that the Ethernet cable that will connect the Express to the Extreme is connected to one of the LAN <-> ports on the AirPort Extreme.
Keep your computer near the AirPort Extreme. Restart the AirPort Express (AX) that is plugged into the Ethernet cable and allow 40-45 seconds for it to restart.
Open AirPort Utility, select the AX, and click Manual Setup.
Click the Base Station tab to assign a name to the AX, device password and adjust Time Zone settings.
Click the Wireless tab and adjust your settings to look like this:
Wireless Mode = Create a wireless network
Wireless Network Name = Same name as the AirPort Extreme network
Enter a check mark next to Allow this network to be extended
Radio Mode = Automatic or 802.11n (802.11 b/g compatible) is a good choice
    Channel = Automatic
Wireless Security = Exact same setting that the AirPort Extreme is using
Wireless Password = Same password as the AirPort Extreme network
    Confirm Password
    Click the Internet icon
    Click the Internet Connection tab
    Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
Update to save settings. Close AirPort Utility as soon as you see the message that the settings have been stored. You should have a green light on the AX in 40-45 seconds
Very important.....Power cycle the entire network
Power everything down....all devices.....order is not important
    Wait a few minutes
Start the modem first and let it run a minute or two
Start the next device connected to the modem the same way
Keep starting devices one at a time about a minute apart until everything is powered back up
    You should be all set
