Airport Express joining a network - Please HELP!

I just got an AirPort Express 802.11n Wi-Fi, and I am trying to make it so I can get better connection to the internet from different floors of the building wirelessly. When it decides to actually read the Express I can get to the point where it is asking me for the network I want it to join and I select it and put in the password (which I know is correct), but when I hit continue absolutely nothing happens. Its as if I did nothing. So I'm stuck because it doesn't even tell me if I did something wrong or if it wont work or anything.

Hello feldmane. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
If your goal is to extend an existing wireless network with the 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn), then the option to "join an existing wireless network" would not be the correct choice. If the wireless router you want to extend is another AirPort, then you should use reconfigure them into a Wireless Distribution System (WDS) (for 802.11g) or "extend a network" (for 802.11n). If the other wireless router is NOT another AirPort, then extending with the AXn most likely will not work as very few non-AirPorts are WDS-compatible.

  • Ethernet configuration Airport Express won't work - please help!

I'm trying to add an Airport Express to my network but having lots of trouble. I'd like to duplicate the settings of the existing one in the new one and simply change the IP address of the new one. (The existing unit has a static IP and works fine.) The network seems to be interfering with the setup process, so I connected my iBook directly to the new AP Express via ethernet. In Airport Admin, when I click other I get a dialog with the IP address 10.0.1.1 (which I assume is the default IP of a new AP Express) and a password field. The dialog is inactive until a password is entered, but I don't know what the default password, if any, is.
Will entering a default password allow me to do the configuration? What is it? If not, how do I configure the unit?

Thanks Duane. Couldn't find it anywhere. I'm still unable to connect to my new AP Express.
I created a new location called "AP config" and set ethernet TCP/IP to DHCP. After connecting computer to AP Express w/cable, clicking "Other" in AP Admin, and entering "public" into password field, I got a dialog telling me "unasble to read configuration."
    Any suggestions?

  • Airport express setup, not working, please help me out

i recently purchased a airport express so that i can extend the range of my current network, use airtunes, and have wireless printer sharing. My base station is a d-link router, and from there i have been having a lot of problems. I have been able to set up the airport express part of the way, but not with complete functionality. I have been able to use it for music and i havent tried printing, but i cannott connect through the internet with it, i have to revert back to my base station router for that.I have tried the entire manual, scoured the mac support website and googles this problem for hours with no end. please help me out here, this is getting pretty frustrating
thanks for all the help in advance

Hello CAUTION5697. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Unfortunately, most non-AirPort routers are not compatible with Apple's implementation of Wireless Distribution System (WDS)...so it very unlikely that your D-Link router can be extended wirelessly with the AirPort Express Base Station (AX).
The few that are known to work are:
o another Airport Express Base Station
o 802.11g Airport Extreme Base Station (AEBS)
o 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn)
    o Linksys WRT54G or WRT54GS (not v5)
    o Belkin F5D7230-4 and F5D7231
    o BT Voyager 2091
    o Netgear WGR614 v6
    o Buffalo WGR-G54
Instead, you can configure the AX to "Join an existing wireless network" for both streaming iTunes and for sharing a USB printer. Check out the following Apple article on how: AirPort Express: How to join an existing wireless network in client mode

  • Airport Express joined to network but not discoverable

I have two airport expresses - an older b/g model and a newer draft n model - both on their latest firmwares.
December last year I joined them both to the wireless network in a new place and both worked fine.
I hadn't used either since December - so there my have been some airport utility and itunes updates since then.
Today I plugged either one in and it synched with a green light immediately - however neither could be found in itunes or airport utility.
I have tied configuring them - both wirelessly and via ethernet cable.
I have tried a hard reset to restore to factory default and then configure them.
They can only be found by airport utility and iTunes under these circumstances:
    1. After a hard reset to factory settings - awaiting initial configuration
    2. Configured as it's own wireless network
    3. Joined to the existing wireless network via ethernet only (WiFi off).
If I join to existing wireless network as I need to do the device is not discoverable.
I input the correct credentials and then the device reboots - at this stage it drops out of the airport utility and never gets picked up by it even though it reboots with a green sync light, indicating it is now joined to the network.  Only way to still see it after reboot is if it is still attached to computer over ethernet. As soon as ethernet is disconnected it dropsout.
I would think it was not broadcasting a wireless signal were it not for the fact that it does work when set up as its own wireless network, and also were it not for the fact that it was doing it to two different airport expresses, both different models.
I have two laptops - one on leopard and the other on snow leopard and still no luck- so I don't think it is an OS update issue.
I have never had trouble configuring AEX joined to an existing network before and they both were working December last year.
So in summary: two different model AEX displaying the same behaviour, two mac laptops with different OS' used to configure, tried wireless and ethernet configurations, reboot after configuration gives green sync light but is not discoverable in itunes or airport utility. Airports ARE discoverable when broadcasting their own wireless network or joined to network over ethernet only. Airports are discoverable after hard reset to factory settings but become invisible when correctly joined to an existing wireless network after reboot.
Please help - it is driving me crazy!!!

I'm not trying to set it up as a network.
I just want to be able to play iTunes on my hifi.
The Airport Express is currently sat right next to an Huawei HG532 router with a solid green light.
However both iTunes and Airport utility says: "Airport Utility was unable to find any Airport Wireless devices.... make sure it's plugged in etc...."
Never had a problem before, but i've just plugged it in after a 4 month absence.

  • Airport Express Join Wireless Network Disables Ethernet

I have one of the the older Airport Express (firmware 6.3) and I'm trying to use it to connect a non-wireless machine to an existing network.
Act as a single Wi-Fi interface to any computer or almost any other devices such as game consoles that has an Ethernet port but doesn't itself have built-in Wi-Fi
If I choose "join a wireless network" it appears to disable the ethenet port. Any ideas what I might be doing wrong.
    My Setup
ADSL Modem ------ Time Capsule ---[wireless-g]--- Airport Express ---[ethernet]---Computer

Unfortunately, the Ethernet port is disabled when you configure the older AirPort Express version that you have to "join a wireless network"
It can be enabled in the newer 802.11n version, which uses firmware 7.x.x.  Sorry, not possible up update the Express that you have since hardware changes were made in the 802.11n model.

  • Airport Express and Flashing Yellow - Please Help!

I just purchased an Airport Express and cannot get anything the status indicator to flash anything other than a yellow. I am working on a Win 7 64 bit platform and my router is Netgear N600 (model WNDR3700). The only changes I made to the router is via its utility to enter the Airport ID MAC address into the Netgears "Wireless Acces List". I deperately need input on what I might be doing wrong or need to do to my router's setup. Below are what I have tried and status info:
    What I have tried:
    1) Entered the AIrport's MAC address into my Netgear Router's "Wireless Access List", as well as the Ether ID (out of desperation).
    2) Installed on my PC the latest version of the Airport Utility  (5.5.3).
    3) Plugged the Airport directly in port 4 of my Netgeat Router.
    4) Changed ethernet cables.
    5) Reset the Airport.
    6) Rebooted the Netgear and my PC.
    7) Plugged the ethernet cable from the modem directly into the Airport.
    Info:
    1) When the Airport is first turned on (ethernet is already plugged in), the status light turns solid greem, then goes to solid yellow for a bit, and then immediately goes to flashing yellow (approx 2 seconds between flashes) and stays that way.
    2) then If I run my Advanced IP Scanner if shows the Airport, an IP of 192.168.1.20, the Airport's ethernet MAC address. The status shows "Ok".
    3) If I unplug the Airport and click rescan on the IP Scanner the device remains present but the status is changed to "Dead".
Despite what I tried I get only get the yellow flashing light? Do I have a bad Airport Express or is this a failure on my part to properly set up the Netgear? Thanks in advance for any help offered.

The AirPort Express flashing yellow means it it not receiving a valid IP address. This is issued by your router.
I recommend disabling your Netgear's "Wireless Access List" until you get it resolved.
One thing that you did not mention is using AirPort Utility. You need to configure the Express using AirPort Utility for Windows. If you don't have that click here: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1391
Read about designing AirPort Networks here: http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/designing_airport_networks_10.5-windows.pdf
A new Express creates an unprotected wireless network named "Apple Network xxxxx". You need to disconnect from your existing network and connect to that network in order for AirPort Utility to communicate with the Express. Most likely you will have to temporarily disable any and all anti-virus / firewall / security software running on your Windows to do this. If you don't see that network you will not get anywhere.
When you are finished configuring the Express in AirPort Utility, including addressing any unresolved conflicts it may report, click the button to restart it. AirPort Utility will say "the Express is now restarting" but the temporary network that it created for you to configure it will cease to exist, so just close the window. Reconnect to your usual wireless network which will now welcome the Express as a member.
After it restarts the Express should show a happy green light.
When you are finished re-enable all your Windows firewalls and AV software.

  • Can my airport express join my network via Belkin Router?

    What's up everyone?
I have a question regarding my apple airport express. Is there any way to get this my airport express to join my belkin network? My current network is being run by my Belkin N Wireless Modem-Router(model# F5D8633au4A)and i can't seem to get my airport to join it properly. Everytime i try to install it, it seems to mess with the signal my laptop gets and the AEX doesn't even connect to the network. The best i've gotten is it shows up on itunes, but i can't select the remote speakers.
For now, i just want my AEX to be able to join wirelessly so i can use airtunes, but would it also be possible to set it up so that i can plug my xbox into it so it can go online?
Anyone have any experience setting up the AEX with a belkin router?

    Hi:
I do not have a Belkin router, but have basically the same problem using a Linksys 54G 802.11n router.
I can setup my HP laptop/printer/router as a wirelss network, but cannot get my AE to join that network as a client, wirelessly. IF, I have an Ethernet cable connected from the router to the AE, I can configure the AE, get the solid green LED on it, etc., and play music out of external speakers, but all falls apart whn I disconnect the Ethernet cable from the router to the AE, even though Airport Utility has things setup as a wireless connection.
Have you tried setting up an Apple ad-hoc network from the PC/laptop to the AE and speakers ? See if you can do that. If so, you can play music wirelessly thru the AE/speakers from iTunes (the LED will be a flashing Amber). The trick is that you have to wait about 1-2 minutes duing the config in order for the AE to establish the connection where it (the ad-hoc network) shows up in your system tray network list, when the icon is clicked. The Appel ad-hoc network will have a name like Apple XXXXXX, where the XXXXXX are 6 (of the 12) digits from the AE's MAC address (listed on its label).
If this works, my guess is that the AE is OK, and the problem is getting your AE to join your already existing Belkin network (in my case, LinkSys network).
I was at one of "Apple Genius Bars" last night probing this problem, and they feel that this is most likely a compatability problem between the AE and non-apple routers...though I do not feel that there should be a problem, or they shouldn't be selling the product claiming that it works with non-apple products.
The guys at Apple suggested that I call Apple for Tech Support at:
    1-800-APL-CARE (1-800-275-2273)
There shouldn't be a charge, though the guys at the Genius Bar said that if they try to charge, to raise a big stink over the phone since the
Apple product is not working as claimed !
Another issue: What level of encryption are you using with your router ?
    WEP-64, WEP-128, WPA, WPA2 ???
This greatly affects how easy (or hard) it is to add the AE to your existing network. From what I have learned, the lower the level of encryption, the harder it is to add the AE to the network, since it is an older, less-capatible standard.
Let me know if you find any answers...

  • My Airport Express is Blinking Amber (PLEASE HELP ME)

My airport express has been blinking amber for 3 days now. I am unable to connect to my wireless internet. For some reason i can still connect to my wireless internet via Xbox Live, and my internet works when i hook it directly into my computer. I am unable to "discover my wireless device", nor connect wirelessly. When i open up the airport utility i try to reconfigure my airport but it wont even let me connect to my own base station settings! i had my wireless internet hooked up previously and it worked great, but all of a sudden nothing is working! can you please give me any ideas you may have on how to fix this problem with the blinking amber light? ive tried reseting it numerous times and that does nothing. I read that if u hold the reset button while plugging the airport into the outlet it will reset. problem is that my airport wont reset!!!!!!please help im in college and i really need this wireless internet to start working again!

I am having almost exactly the same problem. I've tried the "factory reset" and was able to access and reconfigure the AirPort while it was connected directly to my MacBook Pro directly via an Ethernet cable, but once it reset itself it returned to the blinking amber light and stubbornly refuses to start up properly. AirPort Utility can't find the base station at all unless I do a factory reset and connect to the darn thing via Ethernet, and this isn't helping me at all since what I'm trying to do is share my internet connection via the AirPort with my other two Macs (a MacBook, and an iMac) so that both my office and my studio have internet connections, and the music collection on the iMac can be played over the house speakers via AirTunes.
I'm at the end of my rope here. Please help!

  • Connecting to wireless thru airport express (joined home network)

I have a wireless router in my bedroom, which is the source of internet connection.
I use the airport express to join this connection, and this airport express is now plugged in my living room.
the name of the wireless connection is "my_name room".
the name of the airport express is "my_name airport express".
i cannot locate the "my_name express" on my devices, including macbook pro, and iphone 5.
i can only locate "my_name room".
is this normal for using airport express as an extension of a network ?
    thanks in advance.

What are the benefits of extending a wireless network then ?
Unfortunately, you are not extending your wireless network since the Express is not compatible with your router for that purpose.
The benefits to extending a wireless network...assuming that your Express is working with a compatible wireless router.....are the same as "joining" with the added plus that the Express is also providing more wireless signal, so the wireless signal strength will be provided over a greater area.
Another question is, the only purposes of joining a wireless network are for AirTunes, and remote printing ?
As I mentioned above, the Express can be used for AirTunes or a remote printer when it is configured to "join" a network. It can only "extend" a wireless network when it is used with another Apple product. In that case, the Express is configured to "extend a wireless network".

  • Connecting two Airport Expresses to extend range, please help!

Hello I have two AX, one which is connected to my broadband modem. I would like to use my 2nd AX to extend the range of my first AX, is there anyway this is possible? I've seen a picture of the opening screen for the Airport Express Setup that there is a box to tick, that allows you to do exactly that, but when I open up my setup, no such option exists for me. Anyhelp would be greatly appreciated. I'm using Mac os 10.4.9 (no leopard, no intel)

Yes that is possible if you configure the 2 AirPort Express (AX) to connect wirelessly using WDS.

  • Airport Extreme setup problems on existing WDS network - Please help!

I just bought a Time Capsule and have setup a WDS network for the house. The Airport Express joins the network just fine as a remote WDS device. I cannot get the Airport Extreme (v5.7) to join the same network. It just continues to make a *separate network with the same name* despite the Channel being the same, the WDS being set to remote, and the main ID of the Time Capsule has been put in correctly. In other words, since I setup the airport Express correctly, I cannot figure out for the life of me why the Airport Extreme is not joining correctly.
PLEASE HELP. I've been trying this for 6 hours now and countless total restarts by hard resets of all the equipment.

Hello arthung. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
    Let's double-check your WDS setup ...
(Note: To facilitate the WDS set up, place the base stations within near proximity of each other during the set up phase, and then relocate them to their desired locations when complete. Also, jot down the AirPort IDs for each of the base stations to be used in the WDS.)
o Perform a "hard" reset on the Time Capsule (TC) and a "hard" reset on the 802.11b/g AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS).
Main Base Station Setup - TC
o Click the AirPort status menu in the menu bar and choose the wireless network created by the TC.
    o Open AirPort Utility.
o Select the TC, and then, choose Manual Setup from the Base
    Station menu.
o Click Wireless in the toolbar, and then choose “Participate in a WDS network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu.
o Click WDS and then choose “WDS main” from the WDS Mode pop-up menu.
o Select the “Allow wireless clients” checkbox if you want client computer to connect to this base station.
o Click the Add "+" button and enter the AirPort ID of the AX.
o Click Update to send the new settings to the base stations in the WDS.
Remote Base Station Setup - AEBS
o Click the AirPort status menu in the menu bar and choose the wireless network created by the AX.
    o Open AirPort Utility.
o Select the AX, and then, choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu.
o Click AirPort in the toolbar and click Wireless. Choose “Participate in a WDS network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and choose the same channel as the main base station from the Channel pop-up menu.
o Click WDS and choose “WDS remote” from the pop-up menu.
o Enter the AirPort ID of the main base station in the WDS Main field.
o Click Update to transfer the settings to the base station.

  • How do I remove an unwanted Airport Express from my network?

I have been using a Time Capsule for several years.  I am having trouble backing up to my Time Capsule.  I have discovered an unknown Airport Express in my network.  I've changed networks, added passwords to the network, etc.  How do I remove this unwanted Airport Express from my network?  I think he is wreaking havoc with my system!!  Help...

Maybe this is an issue I should consult my ISP about??
No question about that. If you can "see" Travis's device, then he can likely "see" your Time Capsule.
I'm just concerned that whomever the APExpress belongs to could be changing settings on my computer or Time Capsule that would cause the issues with me not being able to backup.
Make sure that you have a Time Capsule base station password. Unless a user has that password, they might be able to "see" your Time Capsule, but they cannot access any of the data on the Time Capsule or change the settings.
Open AirPort Utility, click on the Time Capsule and click Manual Setup
Then, click the Time Capsule tab below the icons to see the device name and password for your device. Make sure that you have entered the password and confirmed. Click Update if you have made any changes.
The message I get is "The backup was not performed because an error occurred while copying files to the backup disk.  The problem may be temporary.  Try again later to back up.  If the problem persists, use Disk Utility to repair your backup disk."
I am not sure what this error means, because I cannot duplicate it here to test.
If it were me, I would try this "fix".

Until Bob Timmons gets back to you, first decide what you would like the Express to do. I understand you want it for AirPlay remote speakers, which you can certainly do.
I am assuming that you are not using an Apple AirPort router; if that's not the case stop here and let me know.
If your existing router is not an Apple AirPort Base Station, the Express:
can "join" an existing wireless network as a client, for the sole purpose of streaming music. If that's what you want to do, do not connect it to your router with an Ethernet cable.
can "extend" an existing wired network to serve as an additional wireless access point, which can also stream music. If that's what you want to do, connect its WAN port to an available LAN port on your router using an Ethernet cable.
Then, "hard reset" the Express according to the instructions below, and configure it. The prompts should be self-explanatory. If you run into trouble, describe which of the above two configurations you decided upon, and the point at which you're getting the "unexpected problem".
To "hard reset" an AirPort Base Station: make sure it's powered up, then gently press and hold its tiny reset button. Don't apply any more force than required to feel a tactile click.  Keep it depressed for five to ten seconds, long enough for its LED to flash amber rapidly. Release the reset button. Then, the LED will glow amber steadily for about a minute. Then, it will flash amber, slowly, about once every second or two, waiting for you to configure it with AirPort Utility.
