Airport Express Just Weird

I have a new Airport Express. I have managed to connect to the internet with it - I'm sending this post by it in fact - and yet the light on top is still flashing amber.
I have to say that having switched 6 years ago, this is the first time I have been disappointed at the ease with which an Apple product can be used.
I think I have managed to enable a bridge connection after a fashion - but to be honest I haven't got a clue because setting up this wireless is like reading Greek upside down.
I have the bold wireless indicator in my menu bar, there's a connection <-> indicator too. Their roles seem to overlap.
I had a setup previously which seemed to be a mix of Ethernet and Wireless - again using a wireless base station as a bridge.
Then there's the network settings in System Preferences. Again these are related but different.
What does it all mean? I want a wireless bridge to replace a cable?
Currently I have a choice.
1) Plug in cable - 1 second.
2) Configure wireless bridge - a few hours of bemused frustration.
Do the math.

Yes, it is the first time I've had what I can only call a windows-experience on a Mac. I have been extremely satisfied with Apple's products so far and am and avid Mac-fan.
As mentioned I am using an 1.2GHz iBook G4 with 768MB SDRAM and OS 10.4.
My internet connection is a modem (6Mbps DSL I guess) provided by my ISP in Hong Kong -
www.netvigator.com
I must provide my email address and password for login ID to their server. This is a PPoE protocol as far as I am aware.
Yes, my beef is that the light is flashing amber - I like my LEDs green when they should be green and amber when they should be amber, which is why I switched to Macs because they are invariably blue on a PC.
Also, I cannot print wirelessly. I have a HP Officejet 4255 all-in-one plugged into the Airport Express USB socket. The driver is installed on the iBook and works normally with a direct USB cable connection. The manual refers to a printer setup application in Utilities that doesn't exist, there is a HP application but that can't find the printer.
The other wireless bridge device is no more. It was a Belkin thingy that you could just plug into a LAN socket - very small, good for travelling, hotel in-room connections etc. Anyway it has gone now and I deleted any reference to it in the network settings.
My frustration stems mainly from the wireless set-up process not being particularly friendly. My normal Mac experience is "plug-in-and-use". I guess I have been spoilt. Configuring the iBook for wireless, however, brought back horrible memories of setting up a network connection on windows 95......shudder....Obviously I am exaggerating, as nothing could be quite that bad.
Nevertheless, I am still not entirely certain why I can connect.
I connected the AP-Ex as instructed, then powered up. I installed the software, and ran the Set-up application.
Prior to set-up the AP-Ex started green, changed to solid amber then went to flashing amber after a minute or so.
I have a feeling that during the set-up, I didn't select that the AP-Ex must use my login details even though I recall that I did enter them.
Anyway, I couldn't connect, so I tried to use the Admin Utility which doesn't show an indentified Base Station - even with rescan.
At some point, I don't recall whether before or after using the Admin Utility, I used the Network Settings in System Preferences. I enter details for the Airport PPoE settings etc and I managed to get hooked up.
This is similar to what I did with the Belkin device - however, that device kept dropping the connection and my wife complained that she could never get it to connect properly. I generally could but it often took a few attempts.
This bridge connection seems to employ Airport settings to allow us to use wireless, but Ethernet settings to actually make the handshake with the ISP.
This relies on the Network Settings being set for the base station.
I figured that the Belkin kept dropping the signal because it is not particularly strong, and perhaps it wouldn't connect well automatically because it was not an airport. So I ditched the Belkin and paid that little extra to get an Airport Express which I expected to make friends with my iBook without me doing anything.
The sales assistant did offer to set-up the AP-Ex for me, which should have rung alarm bells, but I declined.
On the positive side, this is not just an Apple issue. I have set-up a number of different wireless devices on different systems in the past and they have all been a headache. Too many SSIDs, BSIDs, MACs, WAP password this,128 Hex that, parity, stop crackle and pop - who needs that. If I wanted stable but confusing I'd use Linux.
I got my first iMac in 2000 after being driven mad by you know who. I was delighted that the internet connection hooked immediately up to my ISP when I entered my username and password as requested.
Wireless ought to be like this - especially if, as in my case, all it is replacing is a cable - the login settings etc being the same as before.
As I say, its not only an Apple issue, it is the main failing behind wireless as far as I can see. Its great when its up and running but getting there is a pain in the ***.

  • Airport Express just stopped working

I have been using the airport express fine just until few days ago.
I've being it using it with an ethernet cable connecting it fron my linksys router. (had it in bridge mode)
Everything was fine until few days ago, when the "airport express" just disappeared from my wireless signal choices.
I had to reset everything and it was working again for a few days and same thing happened again. it just disappeared and my green light on my express turned amber.
I've reset it a few more times after that but after maybe 10 minutes of it working, it will disappear again and turn into an amber light....
now i can't even find airport express on airport utility..
    please help!

I'm also having the same problem with my macbook pro. I also have 3 other pcs hooked up. I was wondering if maybe it is my router or do you think its something with the computer?

  • The audio on my Airport Express just died

The internet connection works fine. It's the audio output from iTunes to my home stereo that appears to be cooked. It's set up the way it always has been.. 1/8" connector into the Tape1 RCA jacks. The CD player plugged into the amp works fine. Audio at the iMac is fine. I get the "connecting to Airport" message when playing tunes. Then audio starts to come out, but it is gargled and barely audible. Futzing with the stereo's input dial makes no difference.
I've reset the airport express three times. Always comes right back up (for the internet). Audio continues to be dead. I've tried inplugging and plugging back in the audio. I get a loud hum for an instant (normal.. it's the ground breaking contact and restablishing). But still, only the gargled weak audio signal.
I'm thinking my airport express just died. Any insights guys?

Hello katsu 2. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Do the Express stations expire after a certain time, and if so, would it have deleted my network info?
Like any piece of electronic hardware, the AirPort Express can malfunction and it is possible, based on your description, that yours has. If it isn't powering on, then most likely it will not broadcast a wireless network and why you are not seeing it from your computer.
One thing you can try, is to perform a "factory default" reset to see if this helps. You may have to perform it a few times just to be sure. If after doing so, if you are still not getting any status light indications, and the unit feels cool to the touch after being plugged in for 10-15 minutes, then there is a good chance that it's power circuitry has failed.

  • Airport express/extreme weirdness

    Hey, all.
I have an AirPort Extreme as my main router. I have an airport express in a building next door that I am using to extend my wireless network. Has worked pretty well for a while now.
Just switched internet providers, and my AirPort Extreme started blinking amber, but, weirdly, everything seemed to work fine.  But it bugged me that it's not green.  At one point in my search to fix this, I was given an onscreen prompt to switch from "DCHP AND NAT" to "Off (bridge mode" which I did and voila!  Green light on the AirPort Extreme.
Happiness until it started noticing that my airport express started behaving badly!  First it linked to another airport express in the airport utility graph instead of linking directly to the AirPort Extreme like it had before. Then it just started only staying connected for about 10 minutes at a time, then blinking amber and dropping off the network.
So I switched BACK to the original "DCHP AND NAT" setting and now everything is working fine again...except that my AirPort Extreme is blinking amber again!
Any thoughts?  I guess I'm just worried that an amber blinking AirPort Extreme doesn't seem reliable, but at the same time, everything with my networks and internet seems to be working that way. Would love to hear any theories.  Thanks!

The range is about 50 meters or 150 feet.....but this assumes that the AirPort is being used in a very large open space like a aircraft hangar.....with no obstructions in the signal path.
Chances are, your home is laid out a bit differently, so without knowing a number of variable factors like.....
    1) How many walls there will be in the signal path between wireless devices
    2) The actual construction type of the walls, ceilings, etc
    3) Heavy furniture, large mirrors, etc. in the signal path
4 ) Other wireless networks around your home
    5) Other wireless devices like cordless phones, BlueTooth devices, etc.
It would be impossible to tell you what the actual range might be in your home.
In general, assuming normal modern home construction, you would not want the wireless signal to pass through more than 2 or 3 walls....since each wall will absorb on average about 15-25% of the wireless signal. A ceiling will absorb even more because of its thickness.

  • My airport express just stops working after an hour

I have an Airport Express Gen 1 to extend a wireless network.  I also am using the Airport Extreme BAse Station.
I get the express plugged in and configured and it just loses signal after about an hour.
This happen when it is in the same room as the extreme.  The product just continues to fail

May I know your antivirus status?
    everything normal before?
do you remember if there is any changes before this issue happen?
updating your network card will be isolate driver issue
Some of this kind of cases will be solved by delete some temporary file (maybe this will be temporary solving problems, but you should try)
Goto Run:c:\temp and delete all the files/folders that present in this temp folder, disconnect that internet connection (LAN or WIFI).
press refresh of F5 on the desktop screen and then try to connect to that internet connection back
or try this via command prompt, run and type cmd
     ipconfig/flushdns
     nbtstat -R
     nbtstat -RR
     netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt
     netsh winsock reset
or try clean boot, i suspected some of the software caused this issue
    https://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135/en-us
I would also recommended to do full scan of your PC
If you not familiar with those step, i suggest you ask your friend or someone who understand about networking better, maybe your IT at office
since this steps will be involved Windows file and registry i recommend you find others or bring it to service center

  • My Airport Express just died??

I've had this Express station for almost 4 years. Tonight it just seemed to conk out. It has no light at all and a soft reset didn't restart it. It shows in System Prefs that Airport is turned on but not connected to a network. I went to connect to my usual network and it has completely vanished from the network name list. Do the Express stations expire after a certain time, and if so, would it have deleted my network info? I am online via Ethernet now so there is no problem with my internet server.

  • Do my Airport Express just buy are with 802.11n?

I using imac 2.4 GHz model 2008 which understand that it build in with airport extream 802.11n standard, isn't it?
Also just buy Airport express but doubt that this AX is on which 802.11n or not?
Because it shown only 802.11 a/b/g.
And since I found software for airport 802.11n available for 1.99 US$, Do I need to install this software to be able to run 802.11n?
    Thank in advance.

No, special software isn't needed. You have AirPort Utility already installed on your iMac and it is located under Applications/Utilities. Run AirPort Utility and go to Wireless and make sure you have an 802.11n mode selected (whether it is 802.11n only or 802.11n with b/g compatibility enabled).

  • Airport express just wont turn on

    Hello
i've had my airport express for probably 2.5 years now and it recently just shut off completely. I plugged it into various plugs and there was no power at all.
Have anyone elses burnt out after a couple years of use?
    Thank you

This is a common problem with the earlier Airport Express. The power supply board dies, if you open it up you will see burnt out components. This is not really fixable, especially by Apple. If you are good with a soldering iron, you can build your own power supply to use an old 5v power brick, which I have done, but this is not for the faint of heart. I have done this myself and it works, but not as elegant as the original.
See http://echoone.com/airport-express/ for details how to repair!
You can sometimes sell these on eBay, for surprisingly good prices.

  • Airport express just wont work

ok everything was just fine. fine for like a year then everything just stops. My airport express base just flashes amber over and over again. I did a soft and a hard restart and ran airport utility and nothing. Then i did a hard restart and started over from scratch still no change. I did everything the support docs say to. now the base is still blinking but the utility says its fine with a green light.
    what to do? help!

I talked to apple care today and we figured it out.
we unplugged the modem and the airport base. waited about a couple of minutes, then with the ethernet cable attached, we started the modem then plugged in the base. It took a second but it started back up just fine. He said that if you start up in that order it will clean up how the modem and the base talk to each other. try it!

  • Is my Airport Express just weak and rubbish?

    Hey people,
Please, any help on this would be great!!
Just moved into a new house, the internet connection there is powered by a Netgear Super G router and manages to deal with most of the house - except for my room! My room is at the other end of the house, to be fair, however my mates laptop seems to find the connection in this room fine.
    details:
    My comp: PowerMac G5
    His Comp: MacBook
Could it be simply that because his is 2/3 years newer, the Airport is stronger and more receptive?
Also, I have one other question...
Can you boast an already routed signal?
I have the same router as what is here...could I send the original signal to that then send that signal to my room? Or does that not work?
Again, ANY help/thoughts would be much appreciated!!
    James

    Thanks for the info.
I assume that the AirPort Extreme is operating correctly. Close AirPort Utility on your Mac if it is open.
Temporarily, locate the AirPort Express in the same room or close proximity to the AirPort Extreme.
Do not connect the AirPort Express to the AirPort Extreme with an Ethernet cable
Power up the AirPort Express and let it run a full minute
Hold in the reset button on the back of the AirPort Express for 7-8 seconds and release
Allow a full minute for the AirPort Express to restart to a slow, blinking amber light
Click the fan shaped AirPort icon at the top of the Mac's screen and look for a listing of New AirPort Base Station.
Just below that, click directly on AirPort Express
AirPort Utility will open automatically and take a minute to analyze the network, then announce that the AirPort Express will be configured to extend the AirPort Extreme network.
Enter a device name for the AirPort Express....or you can use the suggested name....and click Next
AirPort Utility will take another minute to configure the AirPort Extreme and AirPort Express to work together. When you see the message of Set Up Complete, click Done.
    Close AirPort Utility.
Now move the AirPort Express to a location that is approximately half way between the AirPort Extreme and the general area that needs more wireless coverage and power up the AirPort Express. You should be all set.
    Please post on your results.

  • My Airport express just arrived and I cannot get it to connect.

I bought the airport express to :extend" my existing network connection area.  I thought I would simply plug it in and extend the range of the entire network.  Does this have to be connected to the ethernet in some way to work?  If so, whats the point if I alread a wirless network?  It seems to work fine if I am in the same room as the airport extreme and connect it via an ethernet connect cable, but that is not what I had in mind.  I want to plug it in to a power outlet within range on my network and have it extend the range further.  How do I do that, or can I?
    Thank you

    Thanks for the info.

  • Airport express just stopped extending the network

I have an airport express that I have been using for 3 years to extend the network in my house.
All of a sudden it started flashing amber. I've tried soft resets, hard resets, factory resets, and I can't get it to extend the network anymore.
I have 3 other expresses in the house that still extend the network, but this one won't.
Everytime I go run airport utility, it sees the express, and will actually allow me to JOIN the network (I get a solid green light, everything is good) but everytime I ask it to EXTEND the network, it gives me an error message and says it can't do it.
It's an old extreme, that I bought refurbished, so I might be able to accept it's old and needs to be replaced, but then why can I join the network, but not EXTEND the network?
    Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Apple's instructions to "extend a wireless network" are on the main forum page and also here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4259
Although the example pictures an AirPort Extreme as the "extending" device, the setup for an AirPort Express would be exactly the same.

I came back from a week away from the office and my Airport Express plug is totally dead - ***. I tried plugging it into different outlets and no light - nothing. Is this possible? Is there any way to try and revive it?

    Welcome to the discussions!
From the description in your post, it sounds as if there has been a major internal component failure inside your AirPort Express. If it does not respond at all, it will need to be replaced.
