AirPort Express - Keeps Defaulting to Factory Settings
Hi everybody:
I just got an AirPort Express to broadcast my broadband internet throughout my apartment.
I connected it to my cable modem by ethernet cable, created a new network in Airport Utility, and it set up just fine.
I noticed that the light on the Airport Express was flashing amber, although in the A.Utility, it showed green with a successful connection.
The Airport Express is placed directly next to my computer.
Everything was working great (for a while), and I was even able to set up another Airport Express on that same network to broadcast AirTunes in another room. That connection was successful, and the light on Airport Express #2 glowed green.
After a few hours however, I lost connection.
And in Airport Utility, the status on Airport #1 (the one used to create the new network & connected by ethernet to my modem) showed that it had been defaulted to factory settings.
I then manually reset both Airports to default settings, set up the whole configuration again by creating a whole new network, and everything worked as before (#1 flashing amber, but status good in A.Utility; #2 glowed green), but again, after a few hours lost connection #1 status showed default factory settings.
There's a good chance that I'm doing something wrong -- any ideas?
Any wisdom is greatly appreciated.
Usually, if you have an amber light on the Express, there's also an amber light in AirPort Utility when you check the settings.
Click on the word "Status" to see if there are any messages in the window that opens. A flashing amber light can sometimes be a message that a firmware update is available for the AirPort Express.

I have a 1st gen Airport Express and use it to stream music from my PC, iPhone 4, iPad and iPod Touch. My Airport Express is connected to a Teac UD-H01 DAC via an optical cable which is connected to an amp and speakers. I had no problems at all with this set up until I upgraded the Airport Express firmware to 7.6.3. The sound then started to drop out frequently. To cut a long story short after various testing, the problem had to be the Airport Express. I called Apple support but they were not much help and couldn't fix the problem and said they would speak to engineering and phone back. While I was waiting I decided to have another go to find the problem and opened the airport utility and saw that there was an option to downgrade the firmware. At this point I realised that the problems started about the same time that I upgraded the firmware to 7.6.3 but didn't think at the time that Apple would release a firmware that didn't work. Anyway I downgraded to 7.6.1 and hey presto, everything worked again. A couple of days ago I noticed that firmware 7.6.4 was available and thought I'd give it a go, not good - same problem as 7.6.3. I've downgraded to 7.6.1 again and all is well. Hope this helps.

Have you tried using a WEP password for your wireless network instead of a WPA one? That fixed it for me.

Airport express keeps loosing connection to Time Capsule
For several years I have had no issue with mt Airport Express staying connected to my Time Capsule/router. Now 2 of my Airport Expresses keep loosing the connection and flashing yellow. I have done the resets where I press in the little button on the bottom while plugging the AE back into the power source and reconnecting through Airport Utility and that will do the trick but after a short time the flashing yellow lights will go back on.
Would it help to turn off the router, rest all the AEs? It is so frustrating to keep loosing the connection and nothing else has changed; e.g. the AEs are all in the same place.Same thing here! I didnt have the problem with airport express until I update the os from 10.6.2 to 10.6.6. I have been calling the apple support and they couldnt help (or thou sounded like they knew for that particular problem). I got from my work MacBookPro and same thing happen. I hope that apple will read this and just want to tell them that this is my 10 computer made by apple and God knows the last one! First of all they made the the fireware with the bad chipsets so I have to but extra cards and then airport. I cant connect at all to any wifi and have to put the cables on the floor from the wifi router to the ethernet input which is more than 10 metres. Apple sort this asap!!!!!!!!!!

I play music on my hi fi via an airport express attached to my iMac.
Since installing maverick the sound quality is terrible and I get frequent distortion, which never happened before.
I have reset the airport express and reconfigure my wireless settings. I have also used Ethernet on its own but still get the same sound problems.
I would love to turn itunes sound off as you used to be able to do, but this I believe can't be done.
Has anyone else been having the same types of problem, and better still has anyone got the answer?When the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) is connected by Ethernet, you will find an option in the AirPort Utility, labeled: Enable AirTunes over Ethernet on the Music pane. Just select this option to allow streaming iTunes via the AirPort's Ethernet port. You should also be able to disable the AX's wireless so that it shouldn't interfere with the nearby TC.

Airport Express keeps unsyncing.
My Airport Express keeps unsyncing. I must power off and on the device, for it to be recognized by the airport utility. What can i do to solve this? After it's restart, it works fine for some time but unsyncs after some time. I'm using Mac OS X 10.6.8 (10K549) on a MacBook 13".

The two main setups for the existing router & AirPort Express:
1. modem/router ))) Express (Join an existing network)
modem/router ))) MacBook
2. modem/router <...> Express ))) MacBook
(Creating a new wifi network)
you'll need to put one in Bridge Mode.
A good test to see if the AirPort Express is working fine would be to create a new wifi network without internet connected (light will be amber) and see if the airplay drop outs happen without the router in the setup. -

HELP! MY AIRPORT EXPRESS KEEPS RESTARTING ITSELF????
SO, I had this baby for a while now, maybe since novemberish and it was working great until the inevitable happens... Airport utility won't detect my airport express device at all and i've tried everything! All my airport express does is turn amber for maybe thirty seconds, then blinks green once, and does the same thing over and over again! I had my own cool network and everything but now i can't get on the internet at all. i'm connected to a dsl modem from webstar from optimum cable internet service. ugh im so frustrated someone please help!!!

miissidk?It seems to be a startup problem - maybe the configuration file has been corrupted somehow.
Suspect you'll need to do a hard reset, and set it up again.
A hard reset should ensure it shows in your Airport Utility again (although the name will revert back to factory default), but if it doesn't, plug in an ethernet cable between it and your Mac, and perform the setup. -
What's Happening? Airport Scanning keep defaulting to the wrong place

Recently my internet went down and I had to reset my router and modem to increase my speed. Ever since my airport keeps defaulting to the wrong location and I have to keep opening it up and going to my airport name but it won't. I've unchecked the check local networks box but have no idea what else to try.
This is only happening on my Macbook and my iMac and older Powerbook seem to be fine. How can I fix this?Smokerz,
Thanks, I did have my preferred network up top but have tried again and applied changes. We'll see if it sticks. For now I just keep moving it to my preferred airport every time it goes to another one. -

i use airport for air play but it keeps going into flashing amber light about every week. why?
I found on some non-Apple tech sites some interesting info. One guy was having the same exact issues and wrote a script to see what was going on between the Airport base station and the Airport Expresses. It appears that the two devices were having security verification issues and that is why the Airport Expresses get getting knocked offline. In other words, when they talk with each other they fail the security verification and the Airport Expresses go haywire.
So the solution is to turn off the security on both the Airport base station and the Airport Expresses through the Airport Utility. Then, on the Airport base station you check the option to create a closed network. In other words, your wi-fi network is now unprotected but it is not broadcasting to anyone that it is there. From then on, you will have to choose "other" on your laptops/iPads/iPhones/etc and type in your wi-fi network's name rather than just choosing your wi-fi network from a list of options.
I did this a few weeks back and I have had zero issues since the very moment I did the above steps. The network is 100% reliable and faster. No more rebooting. Is it a tad bit unprotected? Yes, but no one knows the network is there. If someone is smart enough to be looking for non-broadcasting wi-fi networks and finding yours, then they are sophisticated enough to defeat your normal security protocols anyway. Maybe if Apple ever decides to fix this problem, which appears they might not be interested in doing, then you could go back to normal security protocols. But until then, this works wonderfully. Give it a try and see. -
My airport express keeps stopping

I have an airport express to broadcast my dsl internet connexion in my flat and since a few days it keeps disconnecting each 20 minutes more or less, I have to disconnect it and reconnect to make it work again, it's not disconnecting from the dsl modem but from each computer connected to it. Its internal program is up to date. I don't know what is happening, could someone give me some advises about thing to do??

"Shutting down" means that the Express powers off and the indicator light turns off. Is this what is happening? -
Ipod Classic 160gb firmware keeps reseting to factory settings

My songs started jumping and skipping on my ipod so i tried to update it with itunes but it was the latest version, so i pressed eject and unplugged it, the ipod said i had no songs on it but in the place where you can see how much space is used i could see my music was still there.
This problem didn't go away so i tried restoring to factory settings through itunes and after it completed the ipod rebooted, the screen flashed white and a itunes error message popped up saying the ipod was corrupt and needed to be restored! Behind itunes i noticed another window had popped up from windows saying my ipod needed to be formatted.
I closed itunes and reformatted with the default settings and it finished fine and the memory indicater said i had 148gb free of a 148gb which is what it was meant to say, i start up itunes and i got the same message from itunes saying it is corupt and needs to be restored... so i restore it and it restarts, screen flashed white and the same message pops up along with the windows message saying it needs to be formatted.
Here is what i have tried so far:
Using the ipod on another computer
Using an earlier edition of itunes
Tried restoring the ipod with an earlier firmware version
different usb ports/ipod connectors
I've also tried all of the above in disk mode
I can navigate through the ipod when its not connected with no problem but even though it is empty the memory on the ipod says 0kb free and every time the ipod restarts itself either by itunes eject or me reseting it the screen flashes white for a second and i'm back to the language selection menu and all settings have reset.
I can also use the ipod as an external storage device with no problem.
What is happening to my ipod and how can i fix it?
I don't have the money to buy a new one or pay the bill to have someone look at it so any help on this would be greatly appreciated.Hello Sparkysun,

Airport Express - How to set proxy settings?
Hello all
I have an AirPort Express in for testing at work.
The internet access at work requires going through a proxy. This proxy gets set on domain clients via gpo.
We have some devices we dont want to put on the domain (wont get the gpo) but we need them to have internet access.
We could set the proxy on these devices manauly but theres a lot of them.
I have been trying to find where in the Airports settings you can set proxy settings but cant find anything.
Can you set proxy settings manualy in the device and if so, where abouts?
I'm using windows for accessing the Airports settings.
Thanks for any help someone can offer.unfortunately i have to use 1.4 which makes this a bit more tricky.
my other idea was to use system.setProperties to set the 2 proxy fields and then afterwards set them back to what they were -- however in the case they were null I get an NPE when I try and set them back, so I'd need a workaround for that as well.
