Airport express loses connection and blinks amber until restarted many times a day.

I have an AirPort Extreme as my,main router with a gen 1 airport express and 2 gen 2 express as range extenders to cover all 3 floors and outdoor area.  I have an Insteon HUB connected to one 2nd generation express and an Insteon IP camera that is on the far edge of the WiFi coverage area.  About 3-5 times daily, the express will blink amber and lose connection.  I need to either restart the network from airport utility or just unplug and restart the specific express. This fixes the problem but only temporarily.  Why does this occur?  Is it due to the wireless camera losing connection?  It seems to occur when I try to access the camera or devices thru the Insteon App.  I have purchased the additional express thinking it was a poor connection to the other range extender but this has made no difference.  I have been on tech support with Insteon for many hours, and they are unable to help.  Any suggestions?

Hello Daniel Epps. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Every few minutes, it seems to temporarily lose its connection to the internet and start flashing amber until it reconnects. It's extremely annoying. Does anyone know why this is happening? Is it an airport problem, or a cable modem problem?
It could be either or neither ...
It is very possible that you may have some form of Wi-Fi interference in the immediate area that is preventing you from getting a good clean signal, and what I would check for first.
I suggest you perform a simple site survey, using utilities like the following to determine potential areas of interference, and then, try to either eliminate or significantly reduce them where possible:
o MacStumbler, or
o iStumbler

  • AirPort Express loses network and will not reconnect

    Hi all,
I've seen several postings about similar issues but I'm not sure if mine has an answer or not. I have owned and used an Airport Express (A1084) for a number of years and it's always worked flawlessly. I recently acquired a second one and moved my original one up one floor to extend my G network and stream music to a different room. Now the Airport will lose its connection to the network every few days and then just blink amber until the power is cut off to the unit. It seems to always reconnect with no issue after the power has been shut off for a second. It has not moved that far away from it's original location and it is not placed even close to the effective range of the main wireless router, so I don't believe that incoming signal loss is the problem.
All the settings on the Express are the same as they have been for years, so the only variables are the addition of the new Airport Express, which I don't have set up to accept wireless connections, and the new location of the device.
Does anyone have some suggestions on a direction to go to trouble shoot this problem?

You need to remember that most newer routers sold in the last 3-4 years allow their users to "hide" their network. In other words, the network is operating but your computer, or one of the commonly used utilities used to scan and display other networks likely will not be able to "see" these networks.
In general, you should probably assume there are twice as many networks as your utility can "see" and since you can't see them, there's no way to know what channels they are using. So, it becomes a process of experimentation to try to find a a good channel for your wireless network.
It's not just your cordless phone that can cause potential problems for your network. My neighbor....across the street...could drop the speed on my wireless to a crawl if he was in his front yard talking on his cordless phone. Again, there's not much you can do about this, except to know that there are far more forms of interference than most users ever imagine.
Since most cordless phones operate at the 2.4 GHz frequency, same as your wireless network, you may be encountering some of the difficulties that I have with the neighbors cordless phones at least 100 feet away.
I solved my issues by using 5 GHz wireless as there are for the moment, much fewer networks using this frequency band. You may need to look at that possibility as well if your problems continue.

  • Airport Express loses connection to base station

Airport Express second gen loses connection to base station, has to be reset.

Roger that.  Late 2013 MBP 2.5 i5 4mb ram, 10.9.1 Mavericks, formatted and hand loaded after questionable upgrade load.  Fast, flawless, no issues.
Airport Express configured to wirelessly extend existing network for the express purpose of supplying an analog
input to a stereo amplifier via airplay.  No other devices are connected to the AE.
The WAP is a Century Link Actiontec C1000A VDSL2 physically located 6 feet from the AE with no obstructions.
There are no existing proximal fortuitous distortion or RF interference sources.  Other 802.X networks near are
on non-conflicting channels.  The WAP is less than six months old and has no issues.
The WAP is configured  for MAC filtering with the SSID turned off.  In the allow list are two iphones, a printer, two more MBPs and the Airport Express.  One of the iphones is loaded with the Remote Ap which functions
flawlessly when the AE is connected.
The AE connects properly in the Extend Existing Network mode and performs as advertised as long as Air Play
    and/or itunes is active.
Some time after music has ended, the MBP has gone to sleep, or been shut down ... the Airport  Express loses its connection to the wireless network, with its amber light flashing.
Performing a reset and reconnecting is necesssary, and all works as advertised after.  Subsequently,
sleep, inactivity, or shutdown will cause loss of connection again.
I am aware the AE can be connected with CAT6, but that is unnaceptable.  If I had wanted to use wire I
would have plugged the MBP into the amplifier and saved $100.
My speculation is some sort of TCPIP flub in the design ... as in the AE does not natively transmit keep-alive
packets when it stops getting data from the Air Play computer.  It would be easy to decide whether to fix
the problem or return an inadequately designed product ... if there were any information about it.  No schematics, no operation description however leaves me only to say thank you for your time and hope
    you have the solution.

  • Airport express loses connection

my airport express was working and now it will lose the connection and I have to unplug the unit and plug it back in to connect. This keeps on happening. It appears to have the latest firmware 7.6.4

    Hey rrross324,
Thanks for the question. I understand you are experiencing issues with your AirPort Express. A reset of the AirPort Express might help this issue:

  • Airport Express will not stop flashing amber light; Reset multiple times; Works for a second with green light and then resumes flashing amber

I bought an Airport Express to extend my Airport Extreme about a month ago. It worked great until 2 weeks ago it started flashing amber. I reset it and set it up via airport utility and it would work for a little while, with great connection, and then it resumes the flashing amber light. Here is the error message:
"This AirPort base station was unable to extend the wireless network. Make sure the wireless network you're trying to extend was set up and is working correctly, that you entered a matching wireless network password into this device, and that this device is in range of the wireless network."
The Airport Extreme is in working condition, in range, and entered in correctly. I do not understand how it can work great for a second and then stop.
    Thanks!

Power off both the AirPort Extreme and AirPort Express
    Wait a few minutes
Power up the AirPort Extreme, and let it run a few minutes
Then, power up the AirPort Express
If you continue to have difficulty, ask Apple to replace the AirPort Express.

  • Airport express loses connection to mac

My Airport Express works perfect when tested thru Ethernet cable directly to Mac. As soon as I move it (very close to computer and where it's always been), it loses it's connection with Mac and doesn't show up in Airport Utility. Any suggestions?  It has always worked fine where it is now it doesn't..

Is your AirPort Express Base Station (AX) the only router in your current network configuration? That is, is it connected directly, by Ethernet, to a Broadband modem? What is the make & model of this modem?

  • My Apple Airport express loses connection

We have a 3-4 months old Apple airport express. When it works, it works really well.
We use it for streaming shows etc on the television via Apple tv and obviously to go on the internet.
We have 1 iphone 5s and 1 iphone 6, 2 iPad Air, 1 MB Air and 1 MB pro Retina so all our devices are pretty much Apple.
The express router is connected straight to the internet cable from the wall, so there is no router in between or anything. I can always connect with the router, but internet is not always pooring through. In other words, im always logged on the wifi, but it seems as something is often blocking the internet. It definitely has something to do with the router because I can be on the internet via the router on the macbook air while both iPads won't work.
I often solve the problem by opening network preference - assist me - continue - log on the net again - type in my password for the computer and then it works again. But this is obviously not a sustainable solution. And this is also not an option on the iPads, so when it doesnt work on the iPads it just doenst work... :-/
    What is the issue?

    No one?

  • Airport express: use internet and air tunes at the same time?

    Hi,
I'd like to use and airport express to create a wirelss network (and so use the internet) AND stream music to my stereo with air tunes - at the same time. Is this possible? So far, I have been able to create a wireless network (and use the internet) OR use the airport express to play music. But whenever my internet works, itune can't find the base station - claiming it "can't be found on the network?"
Can you do both at once?
I'm connecting to an ethernet jack (I'm at a college). It's not a cable modem or DSL. Is this the problem?
Under "music" in the utility configuration. I've selected "Enable Air tunes at the base station." I can't select "Enable Airtunes over ethernet port." When i try to change the network options to allow me to select this "ethernet port" option, I have to tell it how to "distribute IP" addresses. i don't know how to do this, and everything I've tried destroys my internet connection.
I appreciat any help you have to offer. thanks
    1.5 GHz PowerPC G4, 12'' powerbook   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

    solution:
My problem ended up being specific to the network I'm using. There is evidently another router on the ethernet system that was assigning my airport express an IP address (192. ...), rather than letting the network DCHP give me a direct IP address (something like 160. ...). The 192 address made it impossible for iTunes to see my express base station, but I was getting internet, passed through this other router.
The fix - and I'm not sure if this is totally kosher - was to manually enter a correct IP address for my base station. I got the IP address by seeing what this other router was sending my computer to get onto the internet. It gave me the correct router and a workable (160. ...) IP address. I'm not sure if I'm supposed to manually pick an IP address on the ethernet, but this one is working for the time being, and now iTunes can find my base station.

  • Airport Express - iTunes streaming and wireless bridge at the same time?

I know the Airport Express (AX) can do iTunes streaming. And I know it can act as a wireless bridge - meaning, a wired device can plug into the AX as if they were plugged directly into the local network.
What I am wondering - before I buy one - is whether the AX can do both at the same time. I have been reading around, and some people say it cannot, but I am getting the feeling that might be an older version perhaps.
Here is my set up -
    office:
cable modem > Airport Extreme 802.11n base station
    desktop computer
    family room:
DVD, TV, TiVo, etc. -- all would like a wired network connection
Stereo -- would like to stream iTunes from desktop computer
So can the AX stream iTunes to the stereo, AND serve up the network to the TiVo, etc. at the same time?
If so, I assume I can plug an Ethernet Switch into the AX and have it simultaneously service >1 device (e.g. TiVo, TV, etc.).
    Thanks a lot!

The newer 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn) can be setup in any of the following three configurations to enable its Ethernet port to provide network connectivity to wired clients:
    1) As a remote base station in a WDS with another 802.11b/g/n AirPort.
    2) As an extension to another 802.11n AirPort/Time Capsule.
    3) As a ProxySTA (Ethernet bridge) with any wireless router.
I have verified that it can support both performing as an Ethernet bridge and stream simultaneously for the first two configurations, but have not had an opportunity to try the last to verify that case as well ... but I believe it should.

Before I bought it I did the same question at the Apple Store, and they told me "You can extend your existing Wi-Fi Signal with Airport Express wireless...
You cannot extend wireless from any brand except another apple router.. the store might have assumed you were using an apple main router. Most people who buy express buy them to extend an extreme or time capsule.
You are correct .. in the setup documents it does say 5.6.1 is adequate to do the setup.. my bad.. !!

  • How do I use the airport express to connect a remote PC via ethernet cable and access the internet via wireless connection, How do I use the airport express to connect a remote PC via ethernet cable and access the internet via wireless connection

Trying to connect my xbox to the airport express. Have wireless in home and do not have a ethernet point behind tv/xbox. How do I configure the airport express to connect to my wireless network and then the airport express can use its connection via ethernet to connect the xbox to the internet.

Is your AirPort Express Base Station (AX) a 802.11n model? If it is, you can reconfigure it as a wireless Ethernet bridge or ProxySTA. This would allow the AX to join another wireless network and have its Ethernet port enabled for wired clients, like the Xbox 360.
To activate ProxySTA, you must set up the Express to join a wireless network and then enable the Allow Ethernet Clients setting; both settings are located in the Wireless tab of AirPort Utility.

  • Can I use the Airport Express to connect to a Linksys Wireless Network and then use the Ethernet port on the Airport for a wired connection to a device for internet access?  Would I be able to then also use that Ethernet pt to a Ntwk Hub for more wired c

Thanks for the help.  Looked but not clear on what I am trying to do as being possible.  Can I use an Airport Express to connect wireless to a Linksys Wireless Router, such that I can then use the Ethernet ports on the Airport to either connected to a PC wired, or even use a hub off the Airport Express to allow multiple wired connections to it?
I am not looking to have the Airport Express extend my wireless network, just connect to it and provide me wired connections in a different location from where my Linksys Route is located.  Would prefer to replace Linksys with all Apple, but just not possible financially yet.  Thanks for the help.

If the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) is an 802.11n model, then yes, you can reconfigure it as a wireless Ethernet bridge. In this configuration, the AX would join the wireless network provided by the Linksys router and its Ethernet port would be enabled for either a single wired device or for an Ethernet hub or switch for multiple devices.

  • Can I use Airport Express to connect to a printer, Time Machine Back up drive, second b/u drive, and scanner through a USB hub? if so, how?

I have an Airport Express that connects to my printer. I'd like to add a scanner, and two back up drives (one for use with Time Capsule, another specifically for photographs backed up from Adobe Lightroom.
The printer connects to the Airport Express through a USB hub and is recognized.  I cannot get the scanner nor either of the back up drives to be recognized.  Is there a way to do it or will I need to rely on a USB hub wired to the USB port of the MacBookPro?  If it is possible, can you walk me through the set up for each?
    Thanks,
    Doug Earle

I'd like to add a scanner, and two back up drives (one for use with Time Capsule, another specifically for photographs backed up from Adobe Lightroom.
Unfortunately, the USB port on the AirPort Express will only work with a compatible printer.
It will not work with a scanner, copier, or hard drive.
It should be possible to do what you want by connecting a powered USB hub to your Mac and then connecting the devices to the powered hub.
The setup for the scanner and hard drive would be covered by the manfacturers documentation, so providing specific advice for those types of products would be outside the realm of this support area.
But, if you can provide model numbers, it is always possible that another user who is using those products might see this post.

I believe that it is in AirPort Express, and would have to clean it. How do you do that?

You need to use the Express in router mode.. I think you are trying to use it in bridge mode.. but you need to give us a lot more details.. screenshots might help more than anything.
