Airport Express & Netgear routers....Again!

I've just bought an airport express expecting to be able to link it to my existing wireless network with a netgear DG834G2 router , guess I was naive to think it would be easy!
I've read the thread by MacAddict39 and being a bit green I'm not sure how to go about some of it so if someone could guide me and answer my questions it would be fantastic.
1. Connect the AirPort Express to your wired network; you do not need wireless to configure it, as it'll grab a DHCP lease itself off a LAN, assuming it's not setup for wifi yet. If you already screwed yours up royally, just push and hold the reset button -- wait and try this step again. It'll then use your LAN as it would out of box.
Do I use an ethernet cable and do I plug it into the router?what's DHCP?
2. Use the AirPort Admin Program, not the Setup Assistant. You can then enter the IP manually it gets from DHCP, or just scan the network to find it with AirPort Admin (insure you first install the latest version kids).
Where do I find the IP?being new from the box shouldn't the AX have the latest version?
3. When setting up your AirPort Express, enter your SSID by hand, and don't worry if it doesn't see it. Is the SSID NETGEAR?
4. When you enter the 128 bit WEP key, don't use the passphrase, use the key (hex code) generated/shown in the NETGEAR config screen. When you enter this code into the AirPort Admin app, preceed this code with the '$' character, as this tells it that you are entering a hex code, not the string literal thats used to generate the key. Yes, in both password fields add that '$' character -- both times. Where abouts do I find the WEP hex code?
5. Apply the changes (I set the AirPort Express to join my wireless network, since it's using wireless as a client). It'll take about 30 seconds to reboot and voila. You owe me a beer.
It'll be worth a beer after all this buggering about!
Thank you for any help you can provide......Cheers Phil

You should configure your AX to connect to the Netgear router in client mode.
What is client mode?
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108040
You can do this wirelessly from your Mac.
If you have tried to configure before then you may need to reset the AX first.
Resetting AirPort Express

Do I use an ethernet cable and do I plug it into the
router?
Yes that is what the instructions mean.
what's DHCP?
Simply this a process by which a router assigns IP addresses to clients on the network automatically.
Each client (computer or AX) needs their own individual IP address.
Where do I find the IP?
Using the Airport Admin Utility, therefore you need to be able to connect to it to know the IP address.
Your Netgear router may have a list of connected devices and therefore you can get the IP address that way.
being new from the box
shouldn't the AX have the latest version?
Sometimes yes, sometimes no.
. When setting up your AirPort Express, enter your
SSID by hand, and don't worry if it doesn't see it.
Is the SSID NETGEAR?
If your Netgear's wireless network name is NETGEAR, which it probably will be if you haven't changed the SSID from the default configuration.
Where abouts do I find the WEP
hex code?
First did you configure the Netgear router to use WEP?
From the configuration page of the Netgear router which will be accessed from a web browser, check the Netgear manual for details on how to do this.

  • I want to set up my Airport Express Base Station again but do not remember how. Please walk me thru it.

I am trying to hook my Airport Express Base Station up to be a router again and have forgotten how to do this. Before I had it hooked through the modeum and would like to have it that way again but for some reason the process has completely left my memory. I know it has something to do with the little icon on the top of the computer but not what it has to do with it. Because it is not hooked up I am unable to get my printer to work unless I connect to another wireless that I have but do not want to use all of the time since I have to pay for it and do not have  many GB. I am also paying for another that I want to use all of the time (unless necessary to use the other) so It only cost me when I am away from home. Please walk me through the process of hooking the Apple router back up.

All apple routers are setup via Airport Utility.. there is no icon for it in the top menu area.. I think you are confusing the airport network setup (ie the internal wireless card in the Mac) with the airport express setup.. Apple insist on calling everything the same name which makes it more confusing.
Open the airport utility which you find under applications/utilties.
Router setting will depend on what version of the utility you are using.
In version 5 it is under Internet tab and in v6 utility under network. You need to set it to DHCP + NAT.
Download and read the manual for setting up the express if you have forgotten the details.. manuals are always good.. all the manuals are listed at the head of the section. But you are in Time Capsule instead of extreme/express specific area.
    https://discussions.apple.com/community/wireless/airport
    Manuals link http://support.apple.com/manuals/%23airport
If you want the express as router the modem should be bridged or it should be a pure modem for it to work without Double NAT issues. There is nothing wrong with bridging the Express.. that is not the same as using it in wireless bridge modes.. that is router bridge.
    What modem do you have?
I am at a loss to understand the rest.. why the printer is not part of your own network.. and how setting up the airport this way is important. You need to give us specific details if you need more help.
How exactly is the airport setup now?
How do you connect to the modem?
How is the printer connected? What kind of printer?

  • Airport Express & Netgear DG834G 54Mbps Wireless ADSL Modem Router

Could you offer any advice as to whether an Airport Express could be used as a range extender for an existing Netgear DG834G 54Mbps Wireless ADSL Modem Router setup as I really like the idea of Airtunes and sharing a USB printer. I gather that it is possible to use an Airport Express to extend the range of an Airport Extreme basestation setup but have not been successful in finding any info regarding the Netgear.
    Any info gratefully received !

mac-junkie, Welcome to the discussion area!
No it can not be used as a range extender.
But you can still use it for music and printer support. See KB 302153, AirPort Express: How to join an existing wireless network in client mode.

  • Airport Express Netgear

I have a Airport Express 802.11n WiFi and a Netgear CG 3000 modem.
The Netgear CG3000 modem connects to my internetprovider  and no clients (Mac, iPhone, Ipad etc) have (so far) problems in connecting  to the internet  by connecting to the Netgear CG3000 modem
I can connect the Airport Express 802.1n to the Netgear modem as "connection to existing wireless network"
    BUT
am unable to connect as "New Network" and "Extend existing Network"
Any ideas what is wrong ?

Things are a lot simpler if you use products from the same manufacturer for the same purpose, since there are usually setup "wizards" the make the process quick and easy.
I hear you, but right now my Netgear network works very well, and I haven't been able to set up my new Airport extreme, either as a bridge, a client, or in lieu of the Netgear, so I'm a little reluctant to go out and buy another Airport until I'm sure the one I have can be made to work. Those at home are also very intolerant of network outages, even for short periods of time!
I had actually started a problem thread last night that I'd love to get your feedback on. Basically, I have a home system that involves a broadband modem connected to a switch which is connected via hardwiring throughout the house. Right now the Netgear N150 is being used as a wireless access point in one room using an ethernet "plug" into the wall (not sure if this is the correct term). I'm trying to see if I can use the Airport as a client by "plugging" it into an Ethernet wall socket in a different room, but even though I've gone through the Airport utility to add the Airport to an existing network, and everything indicates that it should work, I am unable to connect to the Internet wirelessly using the Airport. I had originally tried to set up the Airport INSTEAD of the Netgear, but because I have an older Imac with outdated Airport Utility software (that couldn't be upgraded for some reason), I ended up having to configure the Airport via an Ipad, and the only way I could connect the Ipad to the Internet was to plug back in the Netgear router. I was able to set up the Airport this way, but subsequently found that only 1 out of 4 Apple devices could access the internet via the Airport network. The rest kept trying to connect but never managed to do so. I've reset everything many times, tried different permutations, went to different rooms, etc., but nothing has worked.

  • AirPort Express & Netgear DG834PN

    Hi,
I have a Netgear DG834PN Wireless Router downstairs and am thinking of buying an AirPort Express to boost my wireless. From what I have read the router won't work with the AirPort Express directly because it doesn't have WDS as far as I am aware. So my question is, do I need to buy a powerline/homeplug adapter for downstairs so that the AirPort Express will work?
This is the powerline/homeplug adapter I am thinking of buying:
    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/132754
    Thanks
    Tom.

Hmmmm... very inefficient use of money. Buying a powerline adapter to use an Express to boost the wireless signal, that is. I would look into another Netgear wireless router that is compatible with extending a network with your existing Netgear router instead. Is that a possibility? Or this there an Express feature you really want, but can't get with a Netgear?

  • Airport Express + Netgear = low signal??

    Hi
i'm using an Airport express card in an Emac downstairs to receive a signal from a well-spec'd (and recommended) Netgear router which is upstairs and directly linked to a Mac G5.
No problem with the G5, but the problem is the signal strength is very low and it takes ages to log on for the downstairs Emac. Obviously distance is an issue but as the crow flies I suppose we talking about 15 m as the crow flies and one floor away with maybe two brick walls and wooden floor but no other (known!) significant barriers. This is a normal domestic house using normal building materials.
The spec indicates this should be no problem, so why the low signal?
Anyone else had problems with Netgear 'quip, or Airport Express? Both come highly recommended so I am somewhat surprised.
Any clues from anyone would be most gratefully received!
    cheers

Brick walls do not allow high radio frequencies to pass easily. So, the brick walls may very well be the problem. Is there any way you can position the router so that the signals don't pass through the brick?

  • How do I get airport express to work again?

I get a message that I need to download Airport utility 5.6 for lion, which I have done.  When I try to install the download, I get to the destination point on the menu, and there is a yellow triangle over the HD icon which says that the download is unsupported.  On top of that, this is an Airport Express base station that had worked on this exact same system for several years.  I took it out of the house to try to use it somewhere else, and that is where the trouble started. When I brought the system home, I had the same failure to connect with the base station.  I have executed the reset steps many times, and am at a loss about how to proceed.

Well, a situation like this is sometimes called a Catch 22.
The version of AirPort Utility that you have on your Lion or Mountain Lion operating system no longer supports the older version of AirPort Express that you have.
AirPort Utility 5.6 for Lion will only work on a Mac running Lion up to the 10.7.2 version.  If you are running anything higher than 10.7.2 Lion, or Mountain Lion.......Apple will not allow  you to install AirPort Utility 5.6 using their normal installer.
There are two solutions supported by Apple:
    1) Use another Mac or PC that is using a 5.x version of AirPort Utility to configure the Express
    2) Replace the older AirPort Express with a new AirPort Express....likely what Apple really wants you to do.
A possible solution that might work......not supported by Apple, so there are no guarantees here..... is to install AirPort Utlity 5.6 on your Mac using a workaround to bypass Apple's installer.
ff you think that you might want to give this try.....I am not recommending it, simply pointing out that it exists.....take a look at this thread:

  • Can't get Netgear wg602 v3 to join Airport Express network in client mode

    Hello,
I have been happily using my Airport Express as a base station, but now I need to extend the range to a downstairs area, and I would like to do it with point-to-point bridging so that the AE is the base, and the bridge receives the wireless signal and shares it over ethernet to a switch downstairs.
I have (stupidly) purchased a Netgear wg602 v3 expecting that it would be able to be the client that could pick up and then share the AE's signal over ethernet, but I absolutely cannot get it to join the network and bridge the signal from the AE.
I have brand new firmware on both APs, and I have set them up so that they both have the same SSIDs and passwords, and the Netgear has the AE's MAC entered in it's point-to-point bridging section, and the AE has the Netgear's MAC in its WDS section.
Can anyone give me a hand getting this working?
    Thank you very much,
    Halle
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   Airport Express, Netgear wg602 v3

    Hi iFelix,
    Thanks for your reply.
Last night after quite a bit of effort I actually got it to work without security.
The settings are to create a uniquely-named point-to-point bridging network with the Netgear, referencing the AE's MAC, and tell the AE to use the Netgear's MAC at its uniquely-named network as a remote station via the WDS tab in Airport Admin utility. Auto-configure remote base station will fail, but the AE will be able to join the insecure Netgear box to its network and the Netgear will subsequently relay requests received over its ethernet port directly to the AE.
My question now is whether there is any way to do this with a modicum of security. I guess there's nothing to do but experiment.

  • ITunes 11.1 won't connect to AirPort Express

    Hello,
I just updated iTunes to ver. 11.1.0.126 from the previous version of 11.0.5.  Prior to this, everything worked fine, no issues ever with connecting to my airport express from iTunes.  Now that I've updated to 11.1 I get the following message when selecting my AirPort express for streaming:
"An error occurred while connecting to the AirPlay Device 'CasaWalck AirPort Express'. The network connection failed"
The AirPort express is a bit older... an 802.11g, running the latest version firmware 6.3 and it's still attatching to my AT&T Uverse wireless home network just fine.  Went into the router admin to verify all is well, and it is.
At the end of the day, it seems to be the iTunes update that caused all of this.  I should also add that with the iTunes update, I also installed iCoud (which I didn't have installed before) and the latest version of Quicktime.
    I'm running
    - Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1 on an HP tower.
    - AT&T Uverse wireles modem w/WPA2-PSK (AES) encryption
    - Netgear WNA1100 USB WiFi modem
    - Apple AirPort Express 802.11g w/firmware 6.3
Any help is greatly appreciated.  I really want to get my streaming to work again!
    John

Okay, I'm logging this for anyone who might be experiencing the same issue.  I kept poking around my system until I found the solution myself.
In researching this issue, I kept coming across folks who found an issue involving their Mac systems. Since I have a Windows 7 platform that didn't do anything for me.  Initially I started suspecting an IPv6 compatability issue between iTunes 11.1 and my old airport express.  Found nothing fruitful there (including this so you don't waste your time chasing that down).  The other common theme coming up with others was their firewall.  I came across on thread in particular where if they disabled thier firewall, they got iTunes to connect to their airport express/airplay device again.  However, they were stuck with a choice between this working and having firewall protection.  I personally just couldn't operate without a firewall. So... I kept poking around and literally stumbled on the solution.
    Windows 7:
Start > Control Panel > Windows Firewall > Allow a Program or Feature Through Windows Firewall > Change Settings:
    - click to highlight iTunes from the list
    - click Remove
    - click Allow Another Program...
    - Select iTunes from the list and click Add
    - Click OK so save your settings.
    - Test your connection AirPlay/AirPort Express in iTunes. It should work
    - Restart your machine and test to make sure it still works after a reboot.  Mine did.
From what I can gather, the previous installation of iTunes logged some sort of profile or entry into the Windows firewall.  Once iTunes upated to 11.1, it seems whatever worked for the 11.0.5 install was no longer compatable.  By remiving and reinstalling this entry in the firewall, whatever was needed was refreshed and all is well with the world again.
For all the times this community has helped me out, I only hope I can return the favor.

  • My old Airport Express wants to work but can't

So I've read a lot about Airport Express PSUs dying, but that isn't my issue here.
I bought this Express about 3 years ago. It worked great for the first 18 months as far as I can recall, we'd hold parties with Airplay streaming and everyone was really impressed.
I moved house and had no need for it so I lent it to my sister, who was in a wirless party house at the time. They could never get it to interact with their Netgear router properly so it just sat on the shelf for another 18 months. I've now moved into my sister's house and brought my Airport Extreme with me. We were hoping to live the Airport Express Airplay dream again and after some tikering and a hard rest I got the Airport up and running again and Airplay worked fine.
That was about 3 weeks ago.
2 weeks ago Airplay stopped working. It was cutting out and then it just gave up altogethor. Activating Airplay would cause the Airport Express to immediately go amber. With some tinkering I managed to have ti recover, I just had to keep Airplay running, manually go into the Airport Utility and convince the Airport to reset. By then the track tht ws playing might be about, oh, 3 minutes in. When the track changed to the next song, pfft, amber again. I maanged to recreate these situations several times.
But now, we're lucky if the thing works at all. I'm here in my bedroom on one bar of reception and my housemate Andrew has got, count em, three antennas coming out of his PCI wirless card for a single bar of reception, this is because the Airport Extreme is at the otehr end of the house. Every now and then the Airport Express splutters into action and we get something resembling a reliable connection. Unpluggin it and plugging it back in seems to do the trick. But it'll die again, solid amber.
So yeah, in summary an older Airport Express that had been reliable for years has deteriorated in 3 weeks. I don't know what to do, i can't afford a new one. Any suggestions are welcome, any requests for additional information/elaboration on parties will be answered.

Hello love4pugs...Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Most likely, you just didn't leave enough time to do a complete power recycle of your network components so that your Motorola modem can "recognize" the new device (AirPort Express) connected to it.
    Try the following...
    Modem/Router Power ReCycling
    - Power-off the Cable modem, AirPort Router, & computer(s). (Wait at least 30 minutes. If possible, leave the modem off overnight.)
    - Power-on the Cable modem; Wait at least 30 minutes.
    - Power-on the AirPort Router; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    - Power-on the computer(s)

  • Airport Express dropping out constantly so I can't print wirelessly

I have an iMacG5 running OSX 10.3.9. I have a DLink wireless router which creates my wireless network that the iMac connects to. Also, as my printer as at the other end of the room, I have an airport express connected via USB to the printer so I can print wirelessly. Everything worked like a dream for about 12 months. Until recently I had no security on this network and although I was aware this was risky, I was reluctant to change anything because it all worked so well. But my paranoia got the better of me and I changed the DLink to WPA security. Ever since then, the airport express has acted very strangely. The connection dropped and I was required to do a hard reset. I did that and everything worked. I felt so smug that I had worked out a computer issue! Little did I know that as soon as I shut down the system the airport express dropped out again. I have since discovered that I don't actually need to shut down for the thing to drop out. It just does it of its own accord.
I have contacted AppleCare 3 times and spent a total of about 4 hours on this to date. No luck. They suggested interference. However my airport icon usually shows either 3 or 4 bars and there is no difference when the thing drops out.
The only thing I have learned is that Airport Express does not have to be reset all the time. In my situation, it is best to just unplug it, let it rest for about 30 seconds and then you should be able to see the thing in the airport admin utility. It does take a while and several rescans in the utility, but eventually it does show up. This at least means I don't have to constantly set it up to join the network.
In fact, really it is a doddle to print! I don't know why people like to just go File-Print when you can go through the delight of getting out of your chair, unplugging Airport Express, waiting 30 seconds, looking at the dust under the cupboard thinking I really must get that, plugging the airport express back in, watching the light change from green to amber, to flashing amber, wait for it...wait for it...it's not happening....waiting...finally - green!. Back to the computer, go to Finder - Applications - Utilities - Airport Admin Utility, not showing up, rescan, not there, rescan, rescan, rescan, still not there, rescan, oh good, airport express is showing up. Now, go to Printer setup utility, delete the printer that is there, then add printer, select rendezvous, add my hp, OK......now I can hit File - Print.
Has anyone got any ideas on how I can join the boring legions of people who are oblivious to the joys of printing my way?

    Hi,
I am currently replying to this as it shows in the iChat Community.
I have asked the Hosts to move it to Snow Leopard  (you should not lose contact with it through any email links you get)
I also don't do Wirelss printing so I can't actaully help either.

  • Airport express no longer recognized by macs, but still seen by iOS

    Hello,
I have two airport expresses that I've been using just for streaming audio to two stereo amplifiers.  They were working fine a week ago, both with Lion and with Snow Leopard.  I have five macs in the house right now, running either of those OS versions.  All have suddenly refused to recognize my two airport expresses.  I can't find them using Airport Utility 5.6.1, which I think was recently provided by software update, so I downloaded an earlier version and it doesn't see them, either.
I have made a few changes recently, but none in the last week when the problem has started.  A couple of weeks ago I went to a Vizio wireless router, because the airport express that I had been using for my wifi internet had begun to drop its connection.  About 10 days ago I downgraded back to Snow Leopard because my white macbook was not performing well with Lion.  But after doing so, the airport expresses were working fine in conjunction with the new router. Another computer running Snow leopard also refuses to recognize either Airport express, and there's been nothing done with that except to upgrade Airport Utility to 5.6.1.  The macs in the house running Lion have Airport Utility 6.0, and they can't find the airport expresses either.
I have tried rebooting computers, and unplugging/reconnecting the airport expresses.
So you might think the problem lies with the Airport Expresses, but why would they both fail at the same time?  And to add to the mystery, I find that my iOS 5.1.1 devices, including an ipad 2 and an iphone, both can recognize either of the AEs.
    Thanks in advance!

Ok, found a solution.  the wireless router sets up two networks, one at 5 ghz and the other at 2.4 ghz.  I had been connected to the 5 ghz network.  When I switched over to the 2.4 ghz connection, the Airport expresses became visible again.  So, I guess the airport card sets its speed to receive the wifi network and as long as it's using that, can't communicate at a different rate for other devices?

  • Replacing an Airport Express with a Time Capsule but it won't connect to the internet.

Hello, I hope somebody can help.
I am trying to replace an Airport Express with a 2TB Time Capsule but it won't connect to the internet, via an ADSL modem.
I have tried everything I can think of, powering down all devices, re-setting all devices, but nothing seems to solve the problem.
When I first tried to set up the Time Capsule, there was an option to replace the Airport Express using the same settings.
But there were repeated error messages of 'No DNS Servers' and 'PPPoE server couldn't be found'.
I also had messages that the password for PPPoE wasn't correct, but when I plug the Airport Express back in again, everything works fine.
    What could the problem be?

99% of issues with authentication are wrong password or wrong username.. eg it can be strange like the user name is missing the domain.. whereas the Airport Express works fine without it.
Ring your ISP and make doubly sure you have exactly the correct username and password.
If it still doesn't work, put the adsl modem back into router mode and try it again directly on the modem.. if it works ok on the modem but fails on the TC that is possible and can be caused by pppoe client using incorrect authentication type, CHAP or PAP which the TC does not allow you to select AFAIK.. some ISP do not give enough time to get the router to switch on auto to the correct authentication method.
In the end run the modem as router and bridge the TC. It will work just as well for most installations in bridge as the modem in bridge.

  • Airport Express broadcasting both WPA2 Personal and WPA2 Enterprise?

We were recently scanning for wireless access points for a client using a product called Vistumbler.  The client had two older Airport Express wireless routers, set to use WPA2 Personal, but Vistumbler was detecting both WPA2 Personal and WPA2 Enterprise during the scans. Has anyone else seen this before with any other routers or scanning software? If so, was there a way to only broadcast the current encryption setting?

The AirPorts can be set to WPA2 Personal.......OR........WPA2 Enterprise, but only one setting can be activated at a time.
In the highly unlikely event that the AirPort Express devices are really broadcasting with two different types of encryption, the devices either have corrupted software settings, or they are defective.
Try another scanner......like WiFi Scanner, located in the Utilities folder of the Mac,  or another application to see if you get the same results.
