Airport Express - No transmission

Dear all,
Being a fairly frequent traveller, I always have my Airport Express with me. The other day I wanted to use it but I was unable to see it in the list of available APs. I have the impression that it's partially dead. Meaning that the transmitter went bad.
Here is what I tried to do before making this post:
- various hard resets
- factory default reset
- although it was already installed, reinstalled version 6.3 of the firmware update (with ethernet cable)
Unfortunately nothing seems to bring back the transmission to life. Any ideas of what I could do to arrange the situation?
Thanks and best regards,
pdeli

Dear Honolulu,
The reason why I take my AX is because many of the places where I go there is only cabled network. Plugging my AX at the desk, allows me to have my computer with me in, say, the bed (much more confortable). So, no, I don't use the AX to extend any network. Usually, where I travel, I'm the only one to have Apple stuff and, afaik, AX only extends Apple devices, nothing else (unfortunately). I also, sometimes, use it to transmit music, this allows me to convert myself to an improvised DJ (or shall I write AirJ?).
Regarding your last remark ("Once you factory reset your Express, it should show up as its factory ID in the Airport Set Up Assistant. Does it work at home?"), no it doesn't work. Whether at home or anywhere else, that is why I think that either the transmitter or the duplexer in the AX died. I can see and access the AX through network cable, but not through wireless...
Does this answer your question?
Best regards.

Looks like this is a known issue which has been fixed for Java 8:

  • Slow WiFi transmission and low signal power (Airport Extreme extended by Airport Express)

I am experiencing slow wifi transmission between my notebooks and my base stations and I am hoping someone can help me fix it.
My wifi configuration is the following:
1 Airport Extreme base station (acting as router, wifi "creator" and DHCP server)
1 Airport Express base station (connected to Airport Extreme with a LAN cable, set up to extend wireless network)
1 Lenovo T410 notebook with Intel Centrino Ultimate N-6300 AGN WiFi antenna (I will call this one "Lenovo"), connected to wireless network, running Windows 7
1 MacBook Pro purchased in 2009 (I will call this one "Mac"), connected to wireless network, running Mac OS X Lion
1 QNAP T209-II NAS, connected to Airport Extreme via UTP cable
Airport Extreme (AXTRM) is creating a 802.11n wireless network with WPA2+PSK security with MAC address filtering. The other base station, Airport Express (AXPRS) is connected to AXTRM via a UTP cable. AXPRS is set to extend my wireless network.
My first problem is low signal power. My appartment is 90m2 in size and is in one floor. It is a new flat with high ceiling and modern layout, meaning little walls, big rooms and wide corridors. Still my notebooks, iPhones and iPad can barely reach AXTRM when I am on the other side of the flat. This was the reason why I purchased AXPRS and placed it in the middle of the appartment. My notebooks are placed just on the other side of the AXPRS's wall (less than 1 meter of distance and a simple 10cm brick wall in between), yet signal strength is only at about 80% (measured on my Lenovo using Lenovo Access Connections tool).
My first question is: Is it normal that in a 90m2 flat with not unusual obstacles, I need 2 base stations and even then have a rather poor reception?
My second problem is even more disturbing. I think I have catastrophic transfer speeds via wLAN. It takes over 1 hour to transfer cca. 1GB of files (average size 8MB) from my Lenovo or Mac to my QNAP. My Lenovo is showing about 250kb/s transfer rate when copying files. At the same time, Windows 7 show connection speed 144Mbps. This mean about 18MB/s. I know these numbers are theoretical and that actual transfer speeds are lower. But hey, 72 times lower? Furthermore, if I copy files from my Mac and my Lenovo at the same time, transfer speed is slightly lower. On the other hand, if I connect my notebooks to AXTRM via LAN cable and copy files to QNAP, transfer speeds are a few megabytes per second.
To make things even more confusing for me: if I transfer files from the internet, I get download speed at about 700kb/s, which is quite in line with my internet download speed. I don't understand why transfer speeds within my local network are so much lower.
Therefore, my second question is: How to set up my base stations and my routers to get a decent wifi connection?
I hope someone could help me. If you need any more information, just ask. Thanks!

From my experience of setting up the Airport WiFi for family members and friends, I have learnt the following :-
    1. Airport Express is not as good as Airport Extreme, for being as extender, the difference can be quite a lot.
    2. There is always a dead cornor (bad reception) in a house
    3. Even moving the Airport Extreme / AE a few inches, the performance can be improved quite significant
    4. If possible, always choose 5G 802.11n than 2.4G, unless there are many thick walls.
My suggestion will be as follows :
    1. Moving out the AEBS out of a closet, is a good idea
    2. Always try to locate the AEBS in the centre of a area, instead of the two sides
    3. Try to test the AEBS without an extender, and find the best location area (don't place on the floor, neither above 6 feet height)
    4. After finding a best location, set the extender closer to the AEBS, and then moving apart from it (check the performance after every move), it is better that both devices can face each other.
    5. I can't tell you the reason, and some people may not agree with me, the new 2013 Airport Exteme performance is better and may be is a good idea to replace your Airport Express, and use it to connect with your router, and old AEBS as an extender
    6. Some Powerlinks (in case you can't use a wired ethernet connection between the two devices) work and some don't work with Apple Airport products, therefore, if possible, have an option to return them to the shop if they do not match
    Good luck

  • Airport Express switch to N-Only , Unable to Connect or Even detect router.

Hi, I have a macbook pro from early feb 2008 with the penryn processor in it and an airport express wireless N. When i have the airport express in 802.11n (b/g compatible) i'm able to connect and see the router wirelessly, but when i do N only (2.4 or 5 ghz), i can't connect nor detect the router. It basically just "disappears" and i have to manually reset the router by pressing the small button, setting it back to 802.11n (b/g compatible). Now i'm pretty sure i have wireless N enabled on my macbook pro, because under network utilities i see a/b/g/n as the transmission modes available.
Anyone else have this problem or have any idea on how to solve it?

I'm assuming that you have the Time Capsule and each AirPort Express device setup correctly, but just in case can you check your settings using AirPort Utility - Manual Setup
    First check the Time Capsule
Open AirPort Utility - Click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
Wireless Mode should be set to "Create a wireless network"
There must be a check mark next to "Allow this network to be extended"
    Update to save any changes
    On each AirPort Express
Open AirPort Utility - Click Manual Setup
    Click the Wireless tab
Wireless Mode = Extend a wireless network
Wireless Network Name = Same name as you Time Capsule network
Check mark next to Allow Wireless Clients
Wireless Security = Exact same setting as your Time Capsule
Wireless Password = Exact same password as your Time Capsule
    Update to save any changes
If your settings look like the examples above, and you know that interference is not preventing a connection, then I'm out of ideas.

I just purchased Apple TV AND AIRPORT EXPRESS. I am questioning if  I need it when I already have a Netgear Powerline AV 200 Adapter Kit XAVB2001. Does the Airport Express do the same thing?

Thank you so much.  Any specifics I should know about prior to connecting? The goal is to watch  Netflix from my iPad or iPhone 5 on my tv (located in different room from where Comcast internet modem is hard wired to main computer in house).  Movies would depend on wireless transmission to a smart tv not connected to modem.

  • Computer Sound and Airport Express out of Sync

Hi, i have a W7-Computer in the living room connected to the Hi-Fi system and the TV and several Airport Express to stream the music to other rooms (e.g. kitchen). Till recently i used a very old Stereo-Amp and everything was fine, the music in the living room and in the kitchen were perfectly in sync. Now i had to change to a new Home Cinema Receiver (ONKYO TX-NR609) and probably because of the data processing the Receiver does there is a delay, so that the music in the kitchen is slightly ahead of the one in the living Room. I tried different connections between Computer and Receiver (now using optical-link) and different music modes the receiver has (Stereo, Direct, Pure Audio) but didnt manage to sync it again. Does anybody have an idea? Is there a way to delay the transmission from iTunes to the Airport Express, in order to leave the Receiver enough time to process the music?

    Use the analog output.
The AX has an a terrible flaw: optical delay.
    Notes:
Apple should be able to update this with software. Apple?
I just tested this today with multiple recievers (onkyo TXSR508, sony STR-DH520).
Also: be sure your reciever is not set to delay audio. It sounds like you may have already checked this b/c you mentioned pure audio (which is only for european models?): http://www.us.onkyo.com/model.cfm?m=TX-NR609&class=Receiver&p=d. Other people have had this problem and have fixed it by configuring a/v sync.
See https://discussions.apple.com/message/15785854 for details on my issue.

  • Can I choose not to broadcast the name of my AirPort Express?

I would like to know if I can keep the name of my AirPort Express from being broadcast to other computers. On my old Netgear router I could choose to not broadcast the name but, I don't seem to see the option in the AirPort Base Station Utility.
    PowerBook G4 12 SuperDrive   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

A closed network is still broadcasting and still broadcasts the network name.
A casual user won't be able to see the network from their computer.
However anyone with easily obtained software will be able to see it just fine from their computer.
Unfortunately "Closed" networks, MAC access control lists, and reduction in transmission power are all more "feel good" security rather than real security. All these various approaches are dated and mistakenly lead to overconfidence.
WPA is your friend if you value wireless security.

  • Airport Express Max Speed 65Mbps =(

I recently purchased a wireless N draft airport express and no matter how close I am to the airport the speed of the network is 65Mbps. At first i thought it was my computer but i recently visited a friend and my speed went up to about 150Mbps. He has a Linksys Router. Any ideas?

    Hi,
Had the same problem. But when I changed the transmission freq. from 20 to 40Mhz (or both depending on router) on the router you should be able to reach app. 130-150 Mbps.

  • What is the approximate range of Airport Express for iPad2?

What is the approximate range for Airport Express to use with iPad2?

Clearly the range is impacted by the walls in the transmission path.  However, I was able to get about sixty feet.  As this was no different than that with my Westell-7500 modem/router ("g" standard) from Verizon, I returned the Express.

  • Mac mini stopped 'seeing' airport express

Yesterday my mac mini stopped being able to sustain a connection to my wireless network (cable modem connected to Airport Express base station). All the other computers on the network are still working fine; the mini will connect for a bit (at weaker strength than it used to) and after a short time - could be seconds, could be 5 or so minutes - disconnects. Once the mini has lost connectivity it cannot even 'see' the presence of the airport express. All the other computers in the house (both dells) still connect just fine. I'm therefore assuming that the problem lies in the mini's airport card (specs listed in my profile, and yes, the System Profiler still does 'see' the card).
Just to be thorough, I've tried the following:
    1) plugging the cable modem directly into the mini works - but then, of course, no one else gets internet access.
    2) resetting everything - cable modem, airport express, network settings on mini - followed by a restart does not help the computer stay connected. Maybe I get 5 minutes as opposed to one.
    So here're my questions:
    1) Is it possible to have the airport card replaced in a mini?
    2) Would it be a better option (financially, aggravation, likelihood of recurrence) to get an airport extreme base station instead? Then I could hardwire the mini to the network and use wireless for the other computers (is that correct?).
    3) Is there something here I'm overlooking that I should consider?
    THANKS so much!
    frano

    1) Is it possible to have the airport card replaced in a mini?
Yes. It's a discrete component that can be removed and replaced if faulty, as can the antenna which is also a possible culprit. Just as possible too is that the antenna is not firmly connected, which can also be remedied by servicing.
    2) Would it be a better option (financially, aggravation, likelihood of recurrence) to get an airport extreme base station instead? Then I could hardwire the mini to the network and use wireless for the other computers (is that correct?).
It would always be a better proposition to hardwire a system to a network rather than use wifi - not only for reliable connectivity but also for throughput. I'm not sure that I would consider an airport base station however, since there are a number of other wifi routers available at typically lower cost and which are every bit as compatible if you were to decide to go that route. I use a Belkin at home, which at $40 is inexpensive, yet provides a more reliable signal than my airport extreme base station did.
    3) Is there something here I'm overlooking that I should consider?
Interference. While it's easy to assume that there must be a problem with the mini since your other computers don't have the same problem, that isn't the only conclusion. The mini's great weakness in wifi use is that the antenna is partially screened by the system's casing and as a result, in the most ideal of circumstances it will typically give lower signal strength and poorer signal quality than you'd get with almost any other system. That isn't a problem in most situations, but it does mean that if there is a reduction of signal transmitted (and the Airport Express is pretty low level transmission power even in normal wifi terms) or a source of interference in the area, the mini's wifi connectivity will suffer more readily and notably than almost anything else.
You can look for indications of this sort of issue with a good analytical utility such as AP Grapher (http://www.chimoosoft.com/apgrapher.html) which can show you not just the simple matter of signal strength, but also what other factors may be playing a part, such as noise. That might give some additional clues.

  • Changing Airport Express name problems

I have three Airport Expresses on a recently set-up network in three different rooms in my house, everything works fine as far as the connections and transmission but here's the problem I can't figure out how to correct. The Airport Express units were from another network at another house where I also used my two Macs, a Macbook and an iMac. The Airports had different room/location ID's/names at the old place, so when I set them up here I gave them new station names according to where they were placed. The names changed fine on the Airport Express's but didn't change on the two Macs. So, how do I reset the station names on the computers in iTunes, does anyone know?

I'm having the same problem. I looked at the Preferences, but can't find any solution.
Anyone at Apple know how to fix this. The folks at the store don't.

  • Airport Express Dropping Off Completely

I've viewed other posts with similar problems, though I'm still unsure of how to solve my problem specifically.
I set up and connect my Airport Express, and it'll work fine for about 2 or 2.5 days. Then I'll fire up my PB and notice I won't have a connection. I'll have to reset the Airport Express and cycle through the Setup Assistant. This has happened about 4 times now. At my old place, I never had a problem. My internet connection is fine, and connect without a problem when connecting directly through Ethernet.
I downloaded iStumbler, and noticed my connection signal is between 55% - 65%. I manually set my channel to 1, far away from others around me (the next closest is 6). I've noticed there are about 3-5 other wireless networks around me, some are always active, others popup sporadically. The highest signal I've seen from others is 40%. I enabled Internet Robustness and have Transmission Power set to 100%.
I've yet to see how these new settings work out, but should I be changing/altering any other settings? Any info or advice is greatly appreciated. This is the first time I've had problems with my Airport Express in about a year of use.

How much did you reduce you lease time by...i have tried at 5 min!?

  • Comcast Cable, Airport Express, Mac, + Windows XP - How to make work?

    History:
I have a Mac iBook + (2)Dell Laptops running Windows XP.
Recently, I switched from Verizon DSL to Comcast. New Modem, same router - Airport Express.
Problem - Cable modem to Airport Express to Mac WORK! But, Neither Dell will see a wireless signal. Now, Dell's won't recogize any wireless signals at all. (took to apple store plus Hotspot - nothing) Seems too conincidental that BOTH wifi card would give out at the exact same time I switched to cable.
Previous to the switch to comcast, all worked fine. I know I shut off the broadcast of the SSID prior to the switch, but, thought the Airport was set back to factory default. Current setting of Airport has WEP involked.
    Question:
Does anyone know how to get all three Laptops running wirelessly?

Problem - Cable modem to Airport Express to Mac WORK!
But, Neither Dell will see a wireless signal. Now,
Dell's won't recogize any wireless signals at all.
(took to apple store plus Hotspot - nothing)
Most Windows laptops with built-in wireless have a switch which allows them to turn the wireless on and off in order to save battery power.
Ensure that the switch is in the on position.
Previous to the switch to comcast, all worked fine. I
know I shut off the broadcast of the SSID prior to
    the switch,
Ensure that it is switched on.
It use to be useful, but closing your Airport or wireless network (sometimes referred to as not broadcasting your SSID) is really no longer a real option when it comes to wireless security.
Unfortunately "Closed" networks, MAC access control lists, and reduction in transmission power are all more "feel good" security rather than real security. All these various approaches are dated and mistakenly lead to overconfidence.
My recommendation is not to worry about broadcasting your SSID but use WPA. This will be more secure than a closed WEP encrypted network. Closing your network makes it very difficult for neighbouring networks to see which channels are free thus causing potential interference problems.
Another thing to consider is that a closed network is still broadcasting and therefore is detectable (regardless of whether it is broadcasting a SSID). If someone was determined to hack into your network, then not broadcasting your SSID and MAC address access control is not going to stop them.
WPA is virtually uncrackable (only really vunerable to a dictionary attack if a real word is used as a password) and therefore will stop the casual user and the determined hacker.
but, thought the Airport was set back to
factory default. Current setting of Airport has WEP
    involked.

  • Interferences caused by (multiple) AirPort Express

    Yep,
having the illusion to hear my music all over the house, I have bought 3 AirPort Express just for running AirTunes. Due to heavy drop outs caused by Interferences, it turned out to be not practicable. By accident I found out, that I do not have any interferences, as long as just one AirPort Express is switched on and connected to my AirPort Etreme. As soon as a second AirPort Express shows up, it does not take long till the AirTune drop outs happen. Its way worth when the third AirPort Express is powered on.
So its pretty obvious that the AirPort "Ex.." stations are disturbing each other.
Does anybody has an idea whether there is any further screw I can turn, any further parameter I can change, in order to improve the situation?
However, I am still hoping as only Apple products are involved ...
    Thx for any idea!

    Hello Henry!
First let me thank you for your expertise on that. I am really running out of ideas and appreciate any new thoughts. Let me explain some more details ...
    - the signal strength is pretty good on every Wireless LAN client location
    - I am unsure concerning your thoughts about the transmission rate. iTunes is running on a MacBook which has a 130mbit connection to the AirPort Extreme. Do you really think that streaming causes that much traffic? I hardly can believe that Apple designed AirTunes to just serve one single client ...(?)
    - unfortunately wiring is no option. The location just does not allow it with a reasonable effort
    - I already tried different channels and could not tell any difference
    - All AirPort Express' are just clients to the Extreme. No WDS established.
    Any further thoughts?
I already wrote feedback to Apple stating that I really miss AirPort Express (and MacMini) to be 802.11n capable. But the latest month make me believe that the iPhone stuff eats up most of their resources and I guess it will take quite while till those products get an update
Anyhow, thx for any hints on that!

  • Airport Express and World of Warcraft

    Hello!
I'm currently having issues running World of Warcraft off of my Airport Express. When I try to log into WoW, I get a connecting... message until the client times out, and I get the unable to connect message. However, if I then leave the WoW app, I come back into Windows, and my wireless internet connection is completely shut down. I have to go back in and reconnect to the airport to gain a signal again.
Has anyone heard of this issue?

Hi, I don't really have a solution to your problem, but I can confirm that I'm not having the same problem. I can stream 128 Kbps tunes to Airport Express and my latency only goes from ~54ms to ~62ms, so not much effect. Are you trying to stream very high bitrate songs (like uncompressed)? I thought I read somewhere that the Airtunes function downsampled everything to 128 for transmission, but I'm not sure about that. Also, I'm running my network in 802.11b-only mode (not g), and I have Robustness turned off. When Robustness was on, the connection seemed flakey (not with WoW, just in general), so I turned it off and it's been fine.
