Airport express not accepting some iOS/mac devices. message that "password is incorrect."

hi all,
i have att uverse.  my aiport extreme is being used as my wireless router.  att modem is handeling hardlined.  has worked perfectly until yesterday.  att came to the house to hook up tv.  accoring to them, they never touched the network.  at some point during that, airport extrme stopped lettingsome  users connect.  it was all mac devices. only thing that would connect was imac (that is also hard wired) response from extreme was either that password was incorrect (correct password was entered) or it said it could not connect.  i tried connecting my macbook air to ethernet and connecting wiresley (like the imac) but that did not work.  airport utility and light on extreme both green.
what i've tried:
soft reset on airport extreme
factory reset on airport extreme
reset all network setting on ios devices
deleted all passwords in keychain access on macbook air
deleted all previous saved networks in network preferences
moved airport extreme to numerous locations
banged head against wall 6 times
thanks

It sounds as though you took all reasonable steps, which likely included resetting AT$T's Uverse modem, but you did not specifically mention that.
If you didn't, try it. Power it down and let it rest a moment or two. While you wait, you might as well power down the Extreme also. It stands to reason you did nothing to your network so there should not have been any need to change any of its client device's settings.
Shut down your iMac as well as any other wired devices. Power up the Uverse modem, then the Extreme, then attempt to connect using one iOS device. Make absolutely certain that it's connecting to your Extreme and not someone else's wireless. If that works, try another iOS device, then continue to the other wireless clients, followed by wired ones.

I have plugged my airport express into my speakers, but my Mac can't find it on the wireless network

Did you set the Express up originally or is this a new setup.
You may have to reset the Express doing a Hard or Factory reset.

  • Airport express no longer recognized by macs, but still seen by iOS

    Hello,
I have two airport expresses that I've been using just for streaming audio to two stereo amplifiers.  They were working fine a week ago, both with Lion and with Snow Leopard.  I have five macs in the house right now, running either of those OS versions.  All have suddenly refused to recognize my two airport expresses.  I can't find them using Airport Utility 5.6.1, which I think was recently provided by software update, so I downloaded an earlier version and it doesn't see them, either.
I have made a few changes recently, but none in the last week when the problem has started.  A couple of weeks ago I went to a Vizio wireless router, because the airport express that I had been using for my wifi internet had begun to drop its connection.  About 10 days ago I downgraded back to Snow Leopard because my white macbook was not performing well with Lion.  But after doing so, the airport expresses were working fine in conjunction with the new router. Another computer running Snow leopard also refuses to recognize either Airport express, and there's been nothing done with that except to upgrade Airport Utility to 5.6.1.  The macs in the house running Lion have Airport Utility 6.0, and they can't find the airport expresses either.
I have tried rebooting computers, and unplugging/reconnecting the airport expresses.
So you might think the problem lies with the Airport Expresses, but why would they both fail at the same time?  And to add to the mystery, I find that my iOS 5.1.1 devices, including an ipad 2 and an iphone, both can recognize either of the AEs.
    Thanks in advance!

Ok, found a solution.  the wireless router sets up two networks, one at 5 ghz and the other at 2.4 ghz.  I had been connected to the 5 ghz network.  When I switched over to the 2.4 ghz connection, the Airport expresses became visible again.  So, I guess the airport card sets its speed to receive the wifi network and as long as it's using that, can't communicate at a different rate for other devices?

  • I cannot get my Airport Express to accept wireless clients.

I cannot get my Airport Express to accept wireless clients. After resetting to factory default and reconfiguring, it works briefly but then stops again.
The Airport Express is on the second floor of my house and is seen by Airport Utility. Using a LAN cable with the Express works no problem.
My network is created by an Airport Extreme (ground floor) and extended by a Time Capsule (first floor)
Have run through all settings repeatedly and as I said I can get it to work briefly by resetting and then reconfiguring, but after a short while again my iOS devices can no longer connect and revert to cellular.

My network is created by an Airport Extreme (ground floor) and extended by a Time Capsule (first floor)
The issue is most likely due to the fact that the AirPort Express may be too far from the AirPort Extreme to properly extend it with enough bandwidth to be useful.
It is important to understand that with Apple 802.11n or 802.11ac base station an extended network works in a wheel-like fashion with the base station to be extended at the hub and each extending base station along one of the spokes. This type of configuration does not allow for daisy chaining the base stations. That is, in your case, both the Time Capsule and AirPort Express are attempting to extend the AirPort Extreme.
Each extending base station must be within a certain signal quality range in order to extend the network properly. Please check out the following AirPort User tip for details.

  • How can use my Airport Express 802.11n with IOS X 10.9.4?

I have two Airport Express unit (802.11n) used to connect my upstairs and downstairs HiFi amps to my music collection (On a Mac mini and on my MacBook).  I keep my software up to date and my Airport Express units have now lost connectivity with my updated computers.  They do not even appear in UTILITIES/AIRPORT UTILITY - so I cannot reconfigure.  I have tried pressing the reset button and have tried "Googling" it but have had no success.  Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

    Both say A1254 (I think)
A1254 is not a model number for an AirPort Express, but if you meant to say A1264, that is an 802.11n model that is compatible with AirPort Utility on an iOS device and also the Mac running Mavericks (10.9.4).
If you have pressed the reset button as you say above (held it in for 5-6 seconds or more), then the AirPort Express devices are reset back to factory default settings.
When you open AirPort Utility on the Mac and click on Other Wi-Fi Devices, you should see the AirPort Express. Click on AirPort Express to start the setup process and follow the prompts.

  • AirPort Express not working with Ethernet

How is it possible, that my AirPort Express works only when my Mac Book Pro is WiFi connected to the network? As soon as I connect the Mac Book with Ethernet cable, iTunes doesn't find APX anymore. This is no Firewall issue, as I can ping and telnet to 3689 around in all directions. All software versions are updated.

Many thanks for your help, Stefan

I have the same issue.  Mine fixed itself for a bit and now it's broken again.  I'm thinking it's going to be intermittently broken.  I've tried turning both devices off and on again but that did not help.

  • ITunes purchased videos and all DRM movies will not play on iOS 8 devices when streamed from an external drive (or streamed from other wireless devices). Any solution in sight?

Video streaming of DRM movies, purchased from iTunes and other vendors, to any iOS device is not working.

I am not sure if you really understand the issue at hand. Possibly that you are just scanning, not reading the whole text, or simply that you just want to close a thread with your last words or derail it for whatever strange reason. So far you have been more destructive than helpful, but again this could be ignorance at best.
If you would have had the decency to read the entire thread you would have come to the conclusion that every manufacturer, I came across, has posted FAQ's to this issue but Apple. Find a short excerpt below:

Most forms of DRM (Digital Rights Management) will prevent playing movies on unauthorized devices or from remote storage hosted on wireless drives or NAS drives(Seagate Wireless, Seagate Wireless Plus, Seagate Central or Seagate Personal Cloud). Movies purchased from iTunes can be streamed to iOS 6 and iOS 7 devices which were authorized from remote storage (the video could be selected in Seagate Media App and would be played in a Safari browser), however in iOS 8 this has stopped working. A bug has been filed with Apple, however this functionality has not been restored. Therefore, DRM protected movies purchased on iTunes can no longer be played on devices running iOS 8.
SanDisk  http://kb.sandisk.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/16668/kw/itunes <http://kb.sandisk.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/16668/kw/itunes> Videos purchased or rented from iTunes will not play in iOS 8 The SanDisk Wireless Media Drive and Wireless Flash Drive support streaming of DRM protected iTunes purchased movie content to authorized devices in iOS 6 and iOS 7 ONLY. The DRM protected content is opened in Safari where the DRM is decrypted and the video is played. iOS 8 issue In iOS 8 Apple device has NOT enabled Safari based DRM decryption. Therefore DRM protected content, i.e. purchased movies or TV shows from iTunes, CANNOT be streamed from the Media Drive/WFD in iOS 8. This issue has been reported to Apple. We do not have any estimated date when Safari will support DRM decryption of iTunes purchased content.

Here are the remaining issues that we are aware of in the iOS 8 general release: • Video streaming of DRM movies (purchased from iTunes and other vendors): iTunes purchased videos and all DRM movies will not play on iOS 8 devices when streamed from AirStash (or streamed from other wireless devices). These movies are digitally protected and the AirStash app sends them to the Safari browser to play (which works for all prior iOS versions). However, in iOS 8, Safari will no longer allow DRM movies to play. These movies will play when the video is transferred to the iPhone/iPad and played in the Apple's Video App or the corresponding App from the vendor.

If this is the case and Apple will not address this issue or fix it since Apple believes that movies should be protected this way, you need to let the community know that movies are restricted this way. It appears that Apple finally fixed an issue they had with their movie DRMs. The files should have never played in the first place. Airport Express not seen in Airport Utility! PleaseHelp!
Changing Utility version did not help.
I have successfully used my Airport Express 802.11n A1264 (1st gen.) to stream my iTunes music wireless to my living room stereo. Lately my Airport Express looses connection after every restart and does not show in the Airport Utility.
I run 10.6.8 on a Quad core Mac Pro. up to date on al software updates per 10.6.8 I use a 3rd gen. Airport Extreme 802.11n.
                                                                                                                                                                                              W.W.

I actually did this by myself not into the computer but a secondary Ethernet port on myTripple play Fios modem.
The Express showed up right away. I did the reset and set it up in the utilities to join my existing wireless network. I don't remember all steps but at some point it asked me to put in internet info, I did not, and then it asked me if I wanted the amber flashing stoped so I could use it to stream music. I clicked yes and the set-up finished with a green light. After I disconected the Ethernet cable, plugged in the Express in my living room stereo wireless, it has been working normal since. I restarted a few times, green came right back.
James since you had the right idea I gave you the 10 points. Thank you for being helpful.

I have been experiencing some networking problems
    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
I have the latest Time Capsule ("TC"), an old Airport Extreme Base Station ("AEBS") bought in 2007 and 2 Airport Expresses, one bought in 3 months ago ("AE-Alpha") and the other bought back in 2007 ("AE-Beta"). All of them have been updated with the latest firmware.
Based on those dates, the AirPort Extreme is probably flat (as opposed to dome-shaped), making it 802.11n-capable. The Newer AirPort Express is probably an 802.11n-capable model A1264, while the older one is probably a model A1084 or A1088.
I use {the TC's} DHCP function ... to avoid unauthorized use.
This a discussion for another thread, but that's not what DHCP is for.
The wireless setting for it is to participate as WDS Main, but after reading various posts, it seems WDS is a bad idea
With that older AirPort Express you're stuck with WDS unless you decide to replace it with a newer model.
The AEBS is currently setup as being a WDS Relay at the moment
Why a relay? That's only needed if there's another base station "beyond" it that is configured to depend on it.
Since the AEBS is connected to the TC via Ethernet, you should probably configure it as a "roaming network":
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2273124
{The AE-Alpha} connects fine as WDS remote at the moment
I don't have any experience with mixed WDS and non-WDS networks, but since it's 802.11n-capable, you may be able to configure it to "extend" the network of the TC rather than as WDS. Look for a setting on the TC to "Allow this network to be extended".
    Physical location:
AEBS in one end, TC and AE-Alpha in the middle while AE-Beta on the other end.
A device such as "AE-Beta" that's supposed to extend a network shouldn't be "at the end" but should be half way between the central base station and the clients that need an extended network.

I just bought a new Motorola modem. Do I need to reconfigure my Airport Express? For some reason we have WiFi even though the amber light is blinking.

Typically, when changing out networking hardware, it is always a good idea to perform a complete power reset of all of your networking equipment.
I would recommend that you do the following as a minimum:
Power-down the modem, AirPort base station, and computer(s).
Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes to allow it adequate time to initialize.
Power-up the AirPort base station; wait at least 5-10 minutes. Note: The AirPort's status light may continue to flash amber after it has intialized. That is because, there may be some additional configuration items necessary, like setting up wireless security, before the overall setup is completed to get a green status.
    Power-up your computer(s).
If the above steps do not solve the problem, start over with step 1 above, but then perform the next steps between steps 1 & 2. above.
Disconnect the AirPort base station from the Internet broadband modem.
While all of the devices are powered-down, perform a "factory default" reset on the base station. This will get it back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration and make setting it up much easier, especially if you use the "Assist me" process within the AirPort Utility. (ref: Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule)
After the base station resets, go ahead and power it back down.
Reconnect the AirPort base station to the Internet broadband modem. For the Extreme and Time Capsule, be sure to connect the cable to the base station's WAN (circle-of-dots) port.
Continue with step 2 in the first set of steps.
In this basic configuration, the AirPort base station will broadcast an unsecured wireless network with a Network Name (SSID) of Apple Network NNNNNN. Network clients, connected to the base station either by wire or wireless, should now be able to access the Internet through the ISP's modem. Once Internet connectivity has been verified, you can use the AirPort Utility to configure the base station for wireless security and any other desired options. Please post back your results.

    Sorry for the delay...
I did what you've told me, new account and manually copied my files from Time Machine. I had lots of permissions problems, but at the end, almost everything is in order... It seems it had to be with some of the Apple Preferences, but I can't be sure, as most of them were dumped to the trash can.
I still don't have my Mail Rules back, unfortunately, although I did goggled some. It is a pity, as I had around 30 or 40 of them, getting my mail in order to each of its mailboxes, but it is a small price as the rest doesn't show the before syntoms.
    Thanks for the help, anyway!!

  • Airport Express Not Capturing Correct IP Address

I've had my iMac G5 for about 18 months. I access the Internet via a cable modem. Last night I lost the ability to access the Internet.
A Comcast technician walked me thru various steps and determined that my modem and computer were working fine, and that I could connect to the Internet when the modem was directly connected via an Ethernet connection to the computer, minus the Airport Express.
Further diagnosis revealed that when connected to the Airport Express, the computer was receiving an incorrect IP address (10.0.1.2) when it should have captured 69.242.229.136 at the time. I'm set for Using DHCP, as necessary. I did resets to the Airport Express but it continues to capture and send the same 10.0.1.2 IP address. The end result is that I can't access the Internet.
    Can you help?
iMac G5 with Airport Express and D-Link Modem   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Below is the online manual for the AE. So you have been using the AE to access the Internet for 18 months and then last night .... poof? If so, use the assistant like they say to configure it. You could also change your Airport card configuration to accept DHCP and let the AE give you that address. Your computer has two ways to connect, so you may be mixing up the wired with the wireless. Wired you would get the 69.xxx.xxx.xxx and wireless you would accept the address from the AE ( use DHCP ) on your AirPort card on your MAC.

  • Airport Express (not n) with ethernet hub and as wireless base

    Will Airport Express do this?
I've got a cable modem. It connects by ethernet to a hub. Airport Express (not n) connects to the hub by ethernet. My laptops (MacBook and HP 69xx WinXP Pro) connect to AX and internet just fine.
In that same hub, I want to connect a D-Link DNS323, which I wish to be made accessible to the wireless network provided by AX. Here's a sort-of diagram:

    D-Link
    DNS 323
Can AX (old style, not n version) use its ethernet connector to both communicate with my cable modem and with other wired ethernet devices through my hub?
Thanks for helping. I tried searching for similar posts, but I failed to find an answer.

With only the hub, the NAS, and the express, you can't access both the internet and the NAS wirelessly at the same time. Here's why:
The AirPort Express has only one Ethernet port. That port can either act as a WAN port or a LAN port, but not both at the same time.
You need the Express to be connected to the internet. Unless you have another wireless router (Apple or otherwise), it will have to be connected through its Ethernet port. Therefore, the Ethernet port must act as a WAN port.
The NAS, on the other hand, is part of your network. For it to be connected, the port must act as a LAN port.
This means that the NAS can't be connected to the Express via Ethernet because then the port would need to act both as a LAN port and a WAN port, which it can't do.
This means you'll need an additional wireless router if you want to access both the internet and the NAS at the same time.
If you have another wireless router (it doesn't have to be an AirPort), I can help you configure it to work with your current network so that you can access the NAS.

  • Airport Express not showing name given

    Hello Community,
I have the latest Airport Extreme and Airport Express. I am also using the latest Airport Utility, 6.0.
I am using the Airport Express to extend my network. However, under my Wi-Fi icon (upper right icon), I can not see the name given to my Airport Express. Therefore I can not manually select it. I can see it's name in iTunes, if I want to remotely play music and under "Network>Advanced" I can see it has the "same" name as my Extreme, but with an "AE" after the Extreme's name. Im sure that means Airport Express. Also, of course I can see the AE and the name given to it using Airport Utility.
Question, why is the name given to the Airport Express not showing up under my Wi-Fi ? I could have sworn when I first configured it, it showed up under the Wi-Fi drop down menu under "Other Devices", I believe it read.
    I am running Lion, 10.7.3
Any help please ? Thank you in advance !

By the way, I set up the Airport Express wirelessly. Should I have connected it with an Ethernet to my Extreme to set the Express as an Extended network device ? Thanks !
