Airport Express not seen / discovered by Windows XP machine

I have an Airport Express connected to my wireless home network, mainly for AirTunes streaming. It was previously working fine on this network, but I had to change my wireless router and now can't get the Airport Express to be seen or discovered on the network by my Windows XP PC. This is a problem, since the XP box has all of the music I want to stream.
I also have a MacBook, and this can connect to the Airport Express with no problems.
As far as I know, I set up the new router with the same configuration as my previous one, but may have missed something that is well known to experts here. All other aspects of the wireless network are working fine, including other devices that connect to it, such as laptop, TIVO, etc.
I have tried turning off firewall and virus software while trying to connect to the Airport Express. I also reinstalled the Airport Utility. None of those moves have made this work so far.
Anyone have other suggestions on how to get the XP PC to "see" the Airport Express?
Thanks!

More detail on this.
I am able to temporarily connect to the AE if I use "configure other" and enter the IP address and password. I can change settings, etc., but ultimately when I try to either "Update" or "Revert" it loses the connection and gives me an error [usually -6753].
Have not been able to connect by direct ethernet cable connection, with firewall/virus scan off, resetting AE. Strangely, plugging in a USB wireless adapter to my desktop allowed it to connect to the airport - but I can't run my network with that installed on the desktop.
Anyone have suggestions what else can be done here?
Thanks

Changing Utility version did not help.
I have successfully used my Airport Express 802.11n A1264 (1st gen.) to stream my iTunes music wireless to my living room stereo. Lately my Airport Express looses connection after every restart and does not show in the Airport Utility.
I run 10.6.8 on a Quad core Mac Pro. up to date on al software updates per 10.6.8 I use a 3rd gen. Airport Extreme 802.11n.

I actually did this by myself not into the computer but a secondary Ethernet port on myTripple play Fios modem.
The Express showed up right away. I did the reset and set it up in the utilities to join my existing wireless network. I don't remember all steps but at some point it asked me to put in internet info, I did not, and then it asked me if I wanted the amber flashing stoped so I could use it to stream music. I clicked yes and the set-up finished with a green light. After I disconected the Ethernet cable, plugged in the Express in my living room stereo wireless, it has been working normal since. I restarted a few times, green came right back.
James since you had the right idea I gave you the 10 points. Thank you for being helpful.

  • Older Airport Express not showing up in Windows AirportUtility

I haver an older Airport Express, the kind that plugs right into an outlet.  It's plugged into ethernet, I'm trying to use it to set up a second home network and use it for Airplay.  It's too old to use Airport Utility on any of my Apple devices, but I have AU on a windows laptop to set it up.  I bought it off of eBay, so after I first plugged it in I used AU on the Windows machine to reset the ApExp to factory defaults, just to zero out any old user settings. The problme is that since then,  AU cannot find the ApExp!!
If I look in Wifi settings on my iPhone or iPad it displays the ApExp, and selecting it gives me the error that it cannot be set up with this software (because it's too old), just like before...  but now, when I open AU the ApExp doesn't even show up! Even on the Windows machine, no Airport devices are found. The ApEx is plugged in correctly, and displays a flashing orange light, it has just completely vanished from Airport Utility... what's going on here??

If you decide to keep the new AirPort Extreme, you will need  a newer "n" version of the AirPort Express if you want to try to extend the network using wireless only.
A "refurbished" Model A1264 would work, but it will only extend one band from your dual band AirPort Extreme.
A "new" Express, Model A1394 would be recommended since it will extend both bands.
You do have the option to use the old AirPort Express, but that would involve using a permanent wired Ethernet connection between the AirPort Extreme and AirPort Express.
Unfortunately, it is not possible to predict wireless performance in advance when the signal must pass through numerous walls and or a ceiling. For that reason, it would be a good idea to understand the store's return policy in advance if you want to try a new or refurbished Express.

  • Airport Express not seen by Setup Asst or Admin Utility as Air Tunes remote

I have Earthlink DSL running into an Airport Extreme Base Station and then into my iMac. I bought an Airport Express to play iTunes music over powered speakers in a different room. I plugged the speakers in and then plugged in the Express. The Amber light blinks and neither the Airport Setup Asst or the Admin Utility see it.
I have reset the Express about five times. I was worried about range, so I plugged it in an outlet five feet from the Airport Extreme Base Station. Still flashing amber and the iMac's Airport utilities could not see it.
Do I have a bad Aiport Express or are some of my Base Station settings wrong?
    Andy

Thanks so much for the tips, but unfortunately they leave me with more questions. Can you help?
if you are using wireless to connect to the
Express, you need to make sure that you have the
proper network name selected. It will not be the
name of your existing network because you haven't
set it up for that yet.
Where? The computer just does not see the Express wirelessly.
The easiest way to set up the Airport Express units
is to use an ethernet cable to plug a computer into
    them directly.
And then what do I do to get it set up to be seen when it is wireless?
If you are, for example, trying to set the Airport
Express up in a WDS and you were to get the password
for encryption wrong, forget to set it to the same
channel, forget to give it the same name, or any
other little minor mistakes, it might no longer be
available as a wireless connection unless you reset
    it.
In the config of the Airport Extreme Base Station, in the WDS tab, again, the Express is not seen. I can't make any mistakes because I can't do anything. It has NEVER been seen as a wireless connection.
I'm getting frustrated. Anyone want to buy a three week old Airport Extreme that has never been used but has a lot of pen marks on it from being reset about 20 times?

  • Airport Express not seen by Airport Utility

I have a time capsule that runs my secure wireless network and two airport express stations for airtunes. The Express units have stopped working and are not seen by the airport utility. They have worked in their previous locations for months so they are in range. I already tried resetting them. I have not changed anything with my network and the time capsule is working.
Thanks for any help figuring this one out.

  • HP laserjet P2035 on airport express not playing nice with Windows

I recently bought a new HP laserjet P2035 and hooked it up to my network via the usb connector on an airport express 802.11n. The Airport Express extends my network created on an Airport extreme 802.11n dualband.
I have a MBP 13 and it prints fine. The problem I have is with two PC's. I installed Bonjour on both of them (one on Vista and another one on XP) and they started to print fine. The next day, only my Mac was able to print. Nothing changed whatsoever. Only that I turned off the printer for the night.
I checked and both Windows machines and the printers appear just like they did the day before.
    Any ideas?

    Anybody?

  • AirPort Express not seen by wifi devices, but router wired devices OK

    Hi,
I purchased an AirPort Express yesterday, upgraded the firmware to 7.6.1, connected to my Netgear DG834G router as a wireless client ("Join an existing network"), plugged into stereo and iTunes on my MacPro had no problems using AirPlay.
Today I tried using the AirPort Utility on my iPad and my wife's MacBook (as well as iTunes), but neither of them can see the AX via WiFi. But my MacPro is wired into the router and can see it OK. Likewise if I connect the MacBook to the router it can see the AX fine.
On a more technical note the wired devices can ping the AX, but WiFi devices can't. I find that pretty strange as they're all on the same subnet.
I've tried several resets and reconfigs (even from the MacBook), but once the AX is set to talk to the router then the WiFi devices can't see it. And throughout all this the (wired) MacPro can use AirPlay with no problems.
Has anyone got any ideas on what's going on, I'm a bit stumped! Thanks in advance.
    Cheers,
    Jay

Problem solved. For some stupid reason I had switched on a setting on the Netgear called "Wireless Isolation", and you can probably guess what that does...
    So it's all working now!

  • Airport Express not seen by MacBookPro

I have a NEW AE, plugged in, and cannot see the unit on the wireless network.
    Rescan shows Nothing......
Neither of the S/W Tools for admin see the AE either.

I went to another powerbook, and see the unit immediately.
Config from my Powerbook, reset, all works fine.
Still Cannot see the Airport Express from the MacBook Pro.
So I unpack a second AE, and Exactly the same issue.
Cannot see it from the MacBook Pro.
I can see 3 other networks from the Macbook Pro, and it works like a dream on those networks, Just NOT Either of the NEW Airport Express cards.
Please Help, we moved office and I need this to work before the rest of the users move.

  • Airport Express not seen by G5, but PB G4 sees it

    Hi there,
I got a Zyxel wireless modem but had problems to secure it even after long debates with their helpdesk, so i bought an Airport Express and connected it wired to my Zyxel and created a new wireless network, only this time protected.
The weird thing is, with my G5 i can connect wireless to the Zyxel network but not to the Airport Express (the G5 doesn't see it at all, altough it sees different network in my aera), but with my Powerbook G4 it's no problem to get on both networks, also with my friends Macbookpro it's no problem to get on both networks. Anyone got an idea because i want to get rid of the Zyxel network so my connection will be secured.
    thanks, Arie

One idea that comes to mind is... what channel is the AirPort Express (AX) operating on? If it is using channels 12 or 13, try changing to a channel 1-11.

  • Airport express not seen by my XP computer

I have two Airport Express that in the past have worked great!
Recently we moved and in reestablishing the home network, with the same router and computers, now the network does not recognize either AE.
I have tried locating it both wireless and hard-wired to the router. The Airport Admin Utility...used previously to configure the AEs...doesn't see them in either scenario. I have tried a hard reset and turning off all known firewalls....and that doesn't seem to work either.
Everything else about the network seems to be working (Desktop, and two laptops, print server, routers, etc.)
    Any ideas?

One of the problems with WEP is that the actual standard relies on a 10 character HEX key for 40bit WEP and a 26 character HEX key for 128bit WEP.
In order to make things easier for people, vendors use certain algorithms to convert simple alphanumeric passwords (or passphrases) into HEX keys, thus enabling people to use simple memorable WEP password rather than lengthy HEX keys.
The problem is that different vendors use different algorithms to generate the HEX key and therefore a ASCII password on an AEBS will be hashed differently on a Netgear client and vice versa.
One thing is a 13 character 128 bit WEP password will be hashed by all vendors in the same way (if you use 40bit WEP then a 5 character password is required).
Though sometimes not even that works and the HEX key must be used regardless.

  • Airport Express not seen in iTunes but is connected to wifi network

This is the second Airport Express that's failed on me... and in exactly the same way. It works great for about 8+ months; suddenly, it stops working but still has a green light and is pingable from any other device on the wireless network. Neither iTunes nor any of the admin utilities can see it. I've tried a soft, hard and factory reset. No success; however, after the factory reset, I'm able to see and configure it with the admin utility. I was even able to update the software on it (6.3). After configuration and subsequent restart, it successfully authenticates/connects to the wireless network and that's when my mac is no longer able to see/manage it.
I only use the Airport Express to stream music from iTunes to my stereo located about 10ft away. Confirmed that iTunes is set to look for remote speakers on startup. The last time this happened, I simply bought a new one that worked without issue... until now.
The issue may have started after a software update on my mac though I can't confirm this - I don't usually check iTunes connectivity to the Airport Express post update. Any ideas on what to I can try next?

  • Two airport express not seen by iPhone

I have two airport express units in my house. They partecipate in my home wifi network. From my iMac (10.7.4)  I see them without problems both from the airport utility (6.1) which shows them having version 7.6.1 firmware. From the iMac they also appear as speakers in iTunes.
Problem is that from my iPhone 4S running IOS 5.1.1 neither the airport utility, nor Music, show those aiirport express units (the iPhone for all others uses is correctly connected to the home network).
Same happens from my wife's iPhone 4 running 5.1.1
    What can I try ?
PS With previous software levels things used to work flawlessly. Now even the playback from the iMac's iTunes from times to times drops the connection. This is fixed by closing iTunes and restrting it.

Problem solved. It was my wireless router setup which had an option to prevent wireless devices connecting to exchange data between themselves. Deselecting this option made the iphone see the airports after I inactivated IPv6 networking.

  • Airport Express not working with Comcast

I used to have AT&T and had my airport working well. Yesterday i changed to Comcast and my airport is not working the light stays yellow.. I tried resetting it but it didn't work.. I use it with my old Cisco router and its working. Whats wrong with my Airport Express? My computers are Windows 7

A solid amber light indicates that the AirPort Express has locked up....or it is defective.
Suggest you that try a Factory Default Reset as follows:
    Pull the Express from power
Let it rest for a few minutes
Hold in the reset button and keep holding it for another 8-10 seconds while you plug the Express back in to power
Release the reset button after the hold period and allow 40-45 seconds to restart
The Express should display a slow, blinking amber light at this time
If you continue to see a solid amber light after a few tries with a Factory Default Reset, the Express has failed and it will need to be replaced.

  • HP Laserjet 1020 connected to Airport Express - Can't Print from Windows XP

    Hi,
I have been using Airport Express for almost a year now, and it works fine with my old LaserJet 1200 connected to it, meaning that BOTH my ThinkPad(WinXP) and PowerBook(OSX 10.3) prints off the printer nicely. Last week I bought a LaserJet 1020 to replace the old printer. Now I can only print off my Mac, and not the ThinkPad.
    Here are some additional information:
    - Airport Express has been updated with latest updates.
    - Using newest printer driver available from the HP website.
    - New printer works when connected to ThinkPad via USB.
    - New printer works when connected to Airport Express and printing performed using my PowerBook.
Therefore, My conclusion is that Airport Express and Printer is working just fine, and that it's just my ThinkPad not being configured correctly. (Although at the back of my head I am guessing that just MAYBE it's the Airport Express not accepting a different printer)
This is what I did to install the printer from my ThinkPad to work with Airport Express (which is not working):
    1. Add a printer
    2. Local printer attached to computer (no auto detect)
    3. Selected existing TCP/IP port 10.0.1.1
    4. Selected my new printer driver
    5. Finish
I also tried a few things like:
    - Deleting the TCP/IP port and creating it again before installing the new printer again.
    - Off both airport express and printer and on again after about 10sec.Airport was on first, and after the LED turn green, printer was turned on and USB plugged into airport.
    - Restarting my ThinkPad.
I have tried everything that I can think of, and nothing worked... hence this posting to get professional help.

    Hi,
You might want to download and install bonjour for windows to your Thinkpad it is how I got my roomates XP laptop to print on AX.

  • Airport Express not showing in Airport Utility, flashing Amber

I have 3 Airport Express units.  Two of the 3 work fine and show up in Airport Utility v.6 , but the third flashes amber and is not recognized in Airport Express.  I have tried soft and hard resets, and it always goes to a flashing amber light and is never reocgnized by Airport Utility.
If I pull down the Wifi icon and go to Airport Express, I get the following window:
    Any ideas would be appreciated.

The screenshot is still not coming through here.
Sorry, but I am not familiar with any of the model numbers that you have posted. North and South American versions of the older Express models will be A1084, A1088, or A1264.  The newest version of the AirPort Expess is A1392.
Regardless of the model number, all that you can really do is power up the Express for a few minutes, and hold in the reset button on the side of the device for 10 seconds. Then, release the reset button and allow a full minute for the Expess to restart to a slow, blinking amber light.
If you still cannot "see" the Express in AirPort Utility, you either have a defective Express or a much older version that is not supported by AirPort Utillity 6.x.
