AirPort Express Not Showing as Option for Playback

I have an AirPort Express (new with latest firmware) connected to my Wireless LAN (802.11g). Both of my computers can see it (that is, I can access it from the configuration utility), however, when I load iTunes it will not show as a playback option (pulldown on bottom of iTunes screen) on one computer, unless I first ping the IP of the AirPort. Sometimes this works, sometimes not. Note that iTunes is not loaded on the other computer at the time and I do not have a firewall between the computers on the LAN. I am using WEP encryption, but I've entered the key successfully on both computers and on the AirPort. I've also opened the specified port (5353?) on my router, although that shouldn't matter, as I'm not trying to route outside my LAN.
As mentioned I have latest AirPort firmware and iTunes upgrades loaded on both Windows XP computers, as well as SP2.
Ideas or suggestions?

i assume your airport extreme base station (AEBS) is you main router and you want the airport express (AX) join the network provided by the AEBS.
you could try this:
unplug and re-plug the airport express (AX), then click on the airport icon in your menu bar. you should see something like "Apple network bj1234567" or similar (it may take a little while for it to show up). in order to set up the express, you will have to temporarily join its network ! you will get a message asking +do you really want to switch networks ?+ and you do want to do that.
launch airport utility (AU). you should see the AX on the left. click on the icon of the AX once to highlight it and click continue. follow onscreen instructions and, when prompted, choose to +join an existing network+ and enter the required information for your network.
any help ?

    The three Rs to IOS, try them in order until the issue is resolved;
Restart - Press and hold the Power button until the red Power Off stripe appears. Swipe to power off. Press and hold the Power button to turn the device back on.
Reset - Press & hold the Power and Home buttons simultaneously, ignoring the red power off slider, until the Apple logo appears. Then release both buttons.
Restore - Connect the device to the Mac or PC with which it is usualy synced and use the iTunes app to restore the device to the factory settings. You can then restore the device with a previously made backup or set it up as new.

  • Airport Express not showing name given

    Hello Community,
I have the latest Airport Extreme and Airport Express. I am also using the latest Airport Utility, 6.0.
I am using the Airport Express to extend my network. However, under my Wi-Fi icon (upper right icon), I can not see the name given to my Airport Express. Therefore I can not manually select it. I can see it's name in iTunes, if I want to remotely play music and under "Network>Advanced" I can see it has the "same" name as my Extreme, but with an "AE" after the Extreme's name. Im sure that means Airport Express. Also, of course I can see the AE and the name given to it using Airport Utility.
Question, why is the name given to the Airport Express not showing up under my Wi-Fi ? I could have sworn when I first configured it, it showed up under the Wi-Fi drop down menu under "Other Devices", I believe it read.
    I am running Lion, 10.7.3
Any help please ? Thank you in advance !

By the way, I set up the Airport Express wirelessly. Should I have connected it with an Ethernet to my Extreme to set the Express as an Extended network device ? Thanks !

  • Airport Express not showing up on Macbook

I have an Airport Express I hadn't used for months. I wanted to start using it so I reset it and tried setting it up through the Airport Utility I already had on my Macbook. I downloaded the update (AirPort Utility 5.4.2 for Mac)but Airport was not able to find my network. I tried my ipod touch and sure enough it said "Apple Network xxxxx" was there. I then connected the Express directly to my Macbook w/ the ethernet cable to set up the Network Name/Password, which worked. My Macbook still does not pick up my network and Airport Utility keeps giving me the same message stating that there are no Apple wirelss devices found. I thought I'd try the forum before calling Apple. I find it weird that it shows up on the touch but not my laptop....

When I downloaded the iTunes update, iTunes stopped showing my remote speakers. When I went to System Pref's, Security, Firewall and unchecked the box for "set access for specific services and applications" and checked "allow all incoming selections," iTunes was able to locate the Airport Expresses and gave me the options to select my remote speakers.

I created a VPN connection. Once I connected to the VPN in Windows 8.1, it does not show DISCONNECT option when I click on the VPN again. It just keep showing CONNECT option only. Why? This has to be a bug! Please fix!

    Hi Dan5678,
Is the connection an incoming VPN connection?
If yes, then you may take a look at the KB article below:

  • Airport Express not showing up as a selectable network

I have a new airport express and airport extreme base station (latest firmware installed). I've set up my base station in my home, which is working fine. When I plugged in my airport express, the default name showed up in my available networks on my iPhone. But once I configured it to extend my base station range, it doesn't show up. • Older Airport Express not showing up in Windows AirportUtility

I haver an older Airport Express, the kind that plugs right into an outlet.  It's plugged into ethernet, I'm trying to use it to set up a second home network and use it for Airplay.  It's too old to use Airport Utility on any of my Apple devices, but I have AU on a windows laptop to set it up.  I bought it off of eBay, so after I first plugged it in I used AU on the Windows machine to reset the ApExp to factory defaults, just to zero out any old user settings. The problme is that since then,  AU cannot find the ApExp!!
If I look in Wifi settings on my iPhone or iPad it displays the ApExp, and selecting it gives me the error that it cannot be set up with this software (because it's too old), just like before...  but now, when I open AU the ApExp doesn't even show up! Even on the Windows machine, no Airport devices are found. The ApEx is plugged in correctly, and displays a flashing orange light, it has just completely vanished from Airport Utility... what's going on here??

If you decide to keep the new AirPort Extreme, you will need  a newer "n" version of the AirPort Express if you want to try to extend the network using wireless only.
A "refurbished" Model A1264 would work, but it will only extend one band from your dual band AirPort Extreme.
A "new" Express, Model A1394 would be recommended since it will extend both bands.
You do have the option to use the old AirPort Express, but that would involve using a permanent wired Ethernet connection between the AirPort Extreme and AirPort Express.
Unfortunately, it is not possible to predict wireless performance in advance when the signal must pass through numerous walls and or a ceiling. For that reason, it would be a good idea to understand the store's return policy in advance if you want to try a new or refurbished Express.

  • Second AirPort Express not showing up in AirPort Utility

I got a second AirPort Express (APE) to extend my wireless in a different direction from the first but I have not been able to get the new one to show up in the AirPort Utility.
Here are some of the things that I have tried based on my research so far:
-Unplugged APE and waited 30 seconds then plugged it back in
-Pressed reset button untill light blinked, this caused the light to stay solid amber for several seconds then it started slowly blinking again
-Plugged in to Time Capsule with cable, this allowed me to configure the second APE but once I disconnected the cable it still would not connect wirelessly
-Disconected the first APE and "forgot" it in the AirPort Utility, still not able to set up 2nd APE
Did I get a bad unit?

    Answering my own post ...
I first directly connected the AX to the iMac using the ethernet cable, and was able to configure the AX (not sure that I actually had to do this, as my issue was probably due to poor signal strength - as described later). I then moved the AX back to the living room, and was able to connect again, but soon it was dropped. Determined that the signal was weak. I played with positioning the AX to optimize signal, and now am able to get OK signal (only about 1/3 strength, based on number of bars in "fan" shaped icon in menu bar). Was able to stream iTunes to stereo as well, which is great. Also determined that the 2WIRE system that Airport was trying to set up WAS my neighbor (and not my gateway/router). If you don't see "Apple XXXXX" base station and network listed when you are in Airport Admin Utility or Internet Connect (which I didn't, but since I was using 2WIRE gateway/router, assumed that it was my AX when the 2WIRE appeared in the Airport network connection option), then the AX is not properly set up (weak signal or other problem).
So, with the AX in the living room (front of the house), and the iMac in the sun room (back of the house), I am able to get OK, but not great signal from AX. So far, seems to be sufficient to connect to internet and stream iTunes. I may see if I can reposition the AX on the other side of the living room wall, but that will then require running a long cable to connect to the stereo.
Bottom line: 50ft. range of AX may be reduced when used in old (1920's era) houses (thick, plaster walls). Actual distance between AX and iMac is probably 30-40 feet, though they are separated by at least 3-4 walls. If repositioning to other side of wall doesn't do the trick, I may need to step up to Extreme.
I hope this helps others that might have similar problems.

  • Airport Express not showing up

Noticed my aexpress was blinking amber today. We use it to stream music to speakers.
I tried to reset it and it still is blinking amber. It is not showing up in Airport Utility 5.6 at all.
It did a few minutes ago but when I went throught the set up process it said something was wrong (don't remember, it was
    all a blur)
I am basically redoing my whole network. I have so much stuff I am trying to streamline:
I have a new Airport Extreme that I have ethernet to the cable modem.
I have iMac etherneted into that.
I then have a wireless printer (Canon) that is across the room working fine.
I have a HP Laser Printer I would also like to put across the room- was thinking of getting
or using this Airport Express for that and possibly getting another for the stereo.
I wish I could get some good advice on what to do.
I also have a Weather station that  uses ethernet but it 'buzzes' and I was hoping to somehow put that in another room (i have one of those
ethernet over electrical plug thingies but does not seem to work for that) AND
    a VOIP phone
After all that I still have 2 usb hard drives.
    ahhhhhhhhh networking gods help me.

It may just be possible that the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) is just a bit "out of sorts." I would suggest that you perform a "hard" or "factory default" reset on it to see if this gets it working properly again.

  • Wired AirPort Express not showing in AirPort Utility or iTunes

So I was using my two AirPort Express's to wirelessly play iTunes throughout the house. Recently I wired the house with Cat6 and decided to wire in the AXs for more reliability. My AXs are 1st gen and are running 7.6.1. The problem is, when I turned the wireless off on them, they no longer show up in AirPort Utility or iTunes. I can get them to show in utility by selecting "Configure Other" then manually entering their IP address and password, but that's the only way and they never show in iTunes and disappear from Utility once I "Update". They are wired to a Gigabit switch which is wired to a Netgear router.
    Some additional Info:
Green light is on and solid
I can ping them and connect manually
    "Connect using ethernet" is set
Connection sharing "Off (Bridge Mode)" is set
I also want to extend my wireless range with them, so I've mirrored my wireless settings and used "Create a wireless network" (tried without doing this as well without luck)
    Enable AirPlay is checked
Netgear WNDR3700v2 Router Firmware version 1.0.0.36
    Keebox SGE08 Gigabit Ethernet Switch
    Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 x64
Any idea why I can't see or use them in iTunes and AirPort Utility?
    Thanks!
    -Jake

I wish that I could help you.  I'm having a similar problem, but wireless.
A couple months ago, my two Airport Expresses and my Apple TV disappeared from iTunes AirPlay. When I ran the Airport Utility, the Airports and Apple TV could not be located.  Interestingly, the Airports displayed a green light and all iDevices (iPod Touches and iPads) could connect to the Airports via AirPlay. Like wise, Airport Utility on the iDevices located the Airports. So I connected an Airport to the router via a Ethernet cable.  Once connected via wire and after a hard reset (with an orange light displayed) the Airport Utility found the wire-connected Airport.  I ran the utility to set up the Airport and a green light came on. Then the wire-connected Airport was visible on iTunes AirPlay. So I unplugged the Airplay and returned it to the stereo.  The green light came on, but now neither iTunes not the computer based Airport Utility could find it, even though the iDevices could. I repeated this process expecting a different outcome enough times to be certified insane.
So as I sit my computer based (Windows Vista) Airport Utility and computer based iTunes (the new version) cannot locate the Airport Expresses even though the iDevices readily see them. And their green lights display a connection to the network.
I even tried a forced connection by pasting the Airport's IP address (obtained using Airport Utility on iPad) into the manual configuration of the Airport Utility on the computer.  Oddly, once the IP address was entered, the computer based Airport Utility could see the specs of the Airport Express. But when I tried to save or conclude the Computer based Airport Utility configuration, I got an error.
Another odd thing is that the Remote App on my iDevices no longer works either. I can no longer connect to my iTunes library.  The remote simply can't find my Library at all. (I confirmed that Home Sharing is on).  But I noted that in iTunes is indicated that four devices work connected or linked to the Library.  So I had iTunes "forget" the devices "connected" for Remote and tried to reconnect. I got the number could on the iDevise but the devise never appeared in iTunes Devises for selection.
So whatever problem is preventing iTunes from locating my Airport, is also blocking my iDevises from connecting to iTunes.  Meanwhile, my iDevises can sync with iTunes (while wired - I never tried a wireless sync) and can connect via AirPlay to all Airports.
I've researched this for months and found nothing to work. I'm frustrated to the point of doing something drastic like dumping iTunes and finding some other player to manage my music and stream to my stereos. I'd rather not but the vast majority of my Library can't be played over my stereo.

  • Airport Express Not Showing up in Admin Utility

Have an Intel iMac, and tried to set up AX yesterday. Using SBC DSL internet connection (2-wire system). Plugged phone line into 2-wire router, ethernet cable between router and AX, powered both up. Router shows 3 green lights, indicating that everything is "good." Likewise, AX shows up with a green light. On the iMac, I never got the generic "Airport Express Network" or anything, but did have 2WIRE381 recognized (presumably as my AX network). I am able to connect to the 2WIRE381, and show a strong signal. However, I cannot connect to the internet, nor can I configure AX via the the Admin Utility (nothing shows up). I've tried both soft and hard resets, powering off the router, restarting the iMac, ... nothing seems to work. AX also not visible in iTunes (since no internet connection).
Any thoughts? One thought that I had ... is it possible that I am picking up a neighbor's signal, and that is why I can't configure it? My AX is about 30-40 feet away (single level house, 1200 sqft.) with probably 3-4 walls between AX and iMac.
    Any ideas/suggestions greatly appreciated.

    Hi all
    Running Macbook Pro, 10.6.6...
    Airport express.
It shows a green light on the unit and a green light / all systems oK in airport utility.
However it does not appear in iTunes and is not selectable

Welcome to the discussion area, James!
We are going to use your MacBook Pro to measure the signal strength at the location where the AirPort Express is installed.
Please move your MacBook Pro as close to the location of the Express as possible.
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
    Click Manual Setup
Click on "Wireless Clients" (3rd line from the bottom) and a window will open to display your signal strength and noise
Please post the exact negative numbers that you see for Signal and Noise

  • Airport Express Not Showing Up After Repeated Restarts

Have a first Gen Airport Express and still using the same Macbook we always have, but the Airport is just not working properly any more. Here are the things I have tried:
    - Hard restart, and properly configured the airport express to join my wireless network. My internet router says it is connected and the light is green on the airport but will not show up in iTunes or through the airport utility. The only way I can get the airport utility to read it is when I do the hard restart, but once it restarts, no airport...
    - I have made sure the passwords and security types are correct
It was working fine for YEARS and now it just won't show up at all!
    Any helps would be appreciated!

Welcome to the discussions forum jmpstar.
If you disabled wireless, Airport Utility will have no way to find it, wirelessly. You'll have to reset it by holding in the reset button until the LED flashes rapidly. You'll then be able to configure it again using Airport Utility.

  • Airport express not showing up in airport utilities

    Hi everyone,
First off, I am very new to the mac OS so please excuse obvious misstakes.
I received my macbook pro last monday combined with an aiport base station and an express. I planned to use the express for the airtunes at home and use it as a router with printer attached at work. My home situation works great. I have a harddisk attached to my extreme base station and can stream that content via my macbook pro to the express (which does drop connection quite frequently).
However, when at work cannot seem to get any connection to express. I have tried every single configuration. PLugged in with ethernet, without, with printer, without. I have tried resetting, unplugging. I made a new profile at home before i left which is setup to make the express a wireless router. An option I had not found the previous time I could not connect to it. But alas, this makes no difference.
If I could just make ANY connection to it i would be able to figure it out but i cant. Not even after a reset when the express is 10 cm from the laptop.
    PLease Help me,
    thanks in advance

Your new iMac should not have any issues connecting to the 1st generation AirPort Express Base Station (AX).
When having difficulties accessing the AirPort thru the AirPort Utility, try the following, in order checking accessibility with the utility after each step:
Check the local connection. If you are trying to access the AirPort wirelessly, make sure that you are connected to its wireless network before running the AirPort Utility to administer it. If you are still unable to access it with the utility, temporarily connect your computer directly using an Ethernet cable to one of the base station's LAN ports.
Power cycle the base station. Remove the power adapter's plug from the power outlet, and then, wait 15 seconds before plugging it back in.
Perform a "factory default" reset on the base station.

  • Airport Express not showing up in Utility

Hello, Just got an Airport Express from a friend (not sure which model).
Trying to set up a WDS, however, I cannot even get started as it does not even show up in the utility.
My Airport Extreme N is the only device that shows. Internet works fine. Wireless works fine on our Macbook, so I know the signal is there.
I tried the hard Reset, and still nothing. I've tried to "ReScan" several times as well.
Any help would be much appreciated!!!
    Thanks

To facilitate the WDS set up, try the following:
o Perform a "hard" reset on the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) & a "factory default" reset on the AirPort Express Base Stations (AX) before setting up the WDS.
o Place the base stations within near proximity of each other during the set up phase, and then relocate them to their desired locations when complete.
o To avoid having to "switch" wireless networks during the WDS setup, attach the remote base station, via an Ethernet cable, to the main base station.
o Be sure to jot down the MAC addresses for each of the base stations to be used in the WDS as these will be required during the setup.
o When enabling wireless encryption, configure the remote first and the main last.
