Airport express not viewable in utility

I was trying to connect my airport express to a new wireless network, and it said I did not have a valid ip address.  I hit the restore default settings, and now it has a green light, but is not connected to any networks, and is not viewable in the utility to update settings

I was trying to connect my airport express
What is the model number of the AirPort Express that  you have? If you are not sure, it's on the side or bottom....hard to see small lettering.....but the model number will start with an "A" followed by four numbers.
to a new wireless network
Is this a wireless network provided by another Apple router, or a different brand of router?  If a different brand, what is the make and model number of the wireless router?
I hit the restore default settings, and now it has a green light
The AirPort will have a blinking amber light after a factory default reset.  Something is very wrong if you tried to restore factory default settings and you have a green light.
and is not viewable in the utility to update settings
This is another indication that the AirPort Express was not properly reset to default settings. The Express is visible when it is reset to factory default settings.
in the utility
Which version?  If you are not sure, open AirPort Utility, click on the AirPort Utility menu in the upper left corner of the screen next to the Apple icon, then click About AirPort Utillity and post back with the version number that you see there.

  • Airport express not detected in Utility

I have one Airport Express device only to play music from my pc over my homestereo. Worked fine until now. The amber light is on , reset doesnt help, can not manually configure because my Utility can not detect the airport device, can not update to newer version because my pc doesnt allow internetconnections from within programms ( like it also blocks Hitman Pro) and i can not access firewall settings after i had a nasty virus so i can not set the firewall to allow connection.
I do not think it has anything to do with it but i reset my Linksys Router after i lost my password, internet works fine. I do not use the airport device for internet or printer or anything, just the music. Should i reformat my pc and install everything new and then try to install the airport device again?

The connection between your computer and an AirPort Express device is via the local network created by the router. There is no routerless-free connection, so you need to be sure that the AirPort Express is configured correctly to join the local network.
By temporarily connecting your computer to the AX device by Ethernet cable, you should be able to configure the AX device correctly.

  • Airport Express not shown in Utility

I'm trying to add an airport express to extend my airport extreme base station, but the express does not show up in airport utility. I have the current version of airport utility running on a Windows 7 PC. The express has flashing amber light. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

It might be a Firewall issue with the PC blocking the connection attempt from AirPort Utility. Check the settings in the Windows Firewall to see if connection attempts are being blocked. If yes, you can click to "Allow" the "exception".
Anti-virus software can block attempted connections as well.
Otherwise, try temporarily connecting an Ethernet cable from the PC to the AirPort Express for the configuration. Once the Express is set up and updated, you can disconnect the Ethernet cable.

  • Airport Express not recognized by Utility after changing security setting.

We use an Extreme with an Express to extend the network and run speakers. While trying to eradicate Airtunes dropouts I changed the security setting on the Express using the Airport Utility. After the update, the Express is no longer being recognized. Help!!! I've unplugged it and used the reset button to no avail. I'm a techno-dummy, so please be gentle. I really do appreciate any insight.

    Hi,
It seems you have set a too strong security on the Extreme that is not supported on the Express.
I don't know what model of Express you have so try to use a less strong security on the Extreme.
(you can find the security specs of your express on Apple's website : http://support.apple.com/specs/#airport )
As you have reset the Express... you will first have to set it up again...
P.S. : Do the connection drop problems occur on the Express and / or on the extreme ?
As security settings "should" not be the cause for WiFi connection drop, something else is.
Can you give more info on what you already tried ? Ex : Multicast Rate, Transmit Power, Use wide channels, Closed network, Use interference robustness
    Kind regards,

Changing Utility version did not help.
I have successfully used my Airport Express 802.11n A1264 (1st gen.) to stream my iTunes music wireless to my living room stereo. Lately my Airport Express looses connection after every restart and does not show in the Airport Utility.
I run 10.6.8 on a Quad core Mac Pro. up to date on al software updates per 10.6.8 I use a 3rd gen. Airport Extreme 802.11n.

I actually did this by myself not into the computer but a secondary Ethernet port on myTripple play Fios modem.
The Express showed up right away. I did the reset and set it up in the utilities to join my existing wireless network. I don't remember all steps but at some point it asked me to put in internet info, I did not, and then it asked me if I wanted the amber flashing stoped so I could use it to stream music. I clicked yes and the set-up finished with a green light. After I disconected the Ethernet cable, plugged in the Express in my living room stereo wireless, it has been working normal since. I restarted a few times, green came right back.
James since you had the right idea I gave you the 10 points. Thank you for being helpful.

  • Airport Express not showing name given

    Hello Community,
I have the latest Airport Extreme and Airport Express. I am also using the latest Airport Utility, 6.0.
I am using the Airport Express to extend my network. However, under my Wi-Fi icon (upper right icon), I can not see the name given to my Airport Express. Therefore I can not manually select it. I can see it's name in iTunes, if I want to remotely play music and under "Network>Advanced" I can see it has the "same" name as my Extreme, but with an "AE" after the Extreme's name. Im sure that means Airport Express. Also, of course I can see the AE and the name given to it using Airport Utility.
Question, why is the name given to the Airport Express not showing up under my Wi-Fi ? I could have sworn when I first configured it, it showed up under the Wi-Fi drop down menu under "Other Devices", I believe it read.
    I am running Lion, 10.7.3
Any help please ? Thank you in advance !

By the way, I set up the Airport Express wirelessly. Should I have connected it with an Ethernet to my Extreme to set the Express as an Extended network device ? Thanks !

    try this:
go system preferences > network > airport > advanced > TCP/IP and set *configure IPv6* to off. click on apply.
now have iTunes connect to the remote speaker again.

  • Airport Express (not n) with ethernet hub and as wireless base

    Will Airport Express do this?
I've got a cable modem. It connects by ethernet to a hub. Airport Express (not n) connects to the hub by ethernet. My laptops (MacBook and HP 69xx WinXP Pro) connect to AX and internet just fine.
In that same hub, I want to connect a D-Link DNS323, which I wish to be made accessible to the wireless network provided by AX. Here's a sort-of diagram:
    cable ethernet
modem ---> hub <--- Airport Express <--- laptops, AppleTV, etc. by wireless
    ^
    |
    |
    D-Link
    DNS 323
Can AX (old style, not n version) use its ethernet connector to both communicate with my cable modem and with other wired ethernet devices through my hub?
Thanks for helping. I tried searching for similar posts, but I failed to find an answer.

With only the hub, the NAS, and the express, you can't access both the internet and the NAS wirelessly at the same time. Here's why:
The AirPort Express has only one Ethernet port. That port can either act as a WAN port or a LAN port, but not both at the same time.
You need the Express to be connected to the internet. Unless you have another wireless router (Apple or otherwise), it will have to be connected through its Ethernet port. Therefore, the Ethernet port must act as a WAN port.
The NAS, on the other hand, is part of your network. For it to be connected, the port must act as a LAN port.
This means that the NAS can't be connected to the Express via Ethernet because then the port would need to act both as a LAN port and a WAN port, which it can't do.
This means you'll need an additional wireless router if you want to access both the internet and the NAS at the same time.
If you have another wireless router (it doesn't have to be an AirPort), I can help you configure it to work with your current network so that you can access the NAS.

I have been experiencing some networking problems
    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
I have the latest Time Capsule ("TC"), an old Airport Extreme Base Station ("AEBS") bought in 2007 and 2 Airport Expresses, one bought in 3 months ago ("AE-Alpha") and the other bought back in 2007 ("AE-Beta"). All of them have been updated with the latest firmware.
Based on those dates, the AirPort Extreme is probably flat (as opposed to dome-shaped), making it 802.11n-capable. The Newer AirPort Express is probably an 802.11n-capable model A1264, while the older one is probably a model A1084 or A1088.
I use {the TC's} DHCP function ... to avoid unauthorized use.
This a discussion for another thread, but that's not what DHCP is for.
The wireless setting for it is to participate as WDS Main, but after reading various posts, it seems WDS is a bad idea
With that older AirPort Express you're stuck with WDS unless you decide to replace it with a newer model.
The AEBS is currently setup as being a WDS Relay at the moment
Why a relay? That's only needed if there's another base station "beyond" it that is configured to depend on it.
Since the AEBS is connected to the TC via Ethernet, you should probably configure it as a "roaming network":
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2273124
{The AE-Alpha} connects fine as WDS remote at the moment
I don't have any experience with mixed WDS and non-WDS networks, but since it's 802.11n-capable, you may be able to configure it to "extend" the network of the TC rather than as WDS. Look for a setting on the TC to "Allow this network to be extended".
    Physical location:
AEBS in one end, TC and AE-Alpha in the middle while AE-Beta on the other end.
A device such as "AE-Beta" that's supposed to extend a network shouldn't be "at the end" but should be half way between the central base station and the clients that need an extended network.

  • Old airport express not recognized by airport utility

Mine is a two part problem.  I was having issues with my old Airport Extreme Base Station.  I was dramatically losing data transfer speeds just 20-30 feet from its location.  I also noticed that signal strength no longer made it upstairs to the master bedroom.  I thought that after 6 years, it finally died on me. I purchased a brand new Netgear dual band 5G router and performance improved but I still am having difficulty with the non-5G band upstairs.  (I understand that 5G doesn't travel as far but is faster.  I thought it would be better to use my other network for devices upstairs.)  I still have the Airport Extreme and believe it or not, a really old Airport Express.  I've tried to use both to extend the range of my non-5G network and have failed miserably at both.  The Airport Extreme keeps giving me problems during set up to extend range and my Airport Utility doesn't even support the Express.  (see photo)
    Any suggestions?

    Two separate issues here:
I still have the Airport ExtremeThe AirPort Extreme would not be compatible with a Netgear router if you are trying to "extend" or "repeat" the signal from the Netgear wirelessly.
The reason.....Apple designed their "extend" feature to only work with other Apple routers, so it would be extremely unlikely that this feature would work with a 3rd party router for the purpose that you ask about.
If you are able to permanently connect the Extreme to the Netgear router using a permanent wired Ethernet cable connection, then the Extreme could be configured to provide additional wireless coverage in that manner.
Airport Utility doesn't even support the Express.  (see photo)
That would be correct if you have the older A1084 or A1088 versions of the AirPort Express. To confirm, locate the model number on the side of the Express.....hard to see....you may need a magnifying glass to see the number.
It will take a Mac running the older Leopard or Snow Leopard operating system, or a PC with AirPort Utility installed to be able to administer the older Express.
Unfortunately, this version of the Express does not even have an "extend" feature, to it too would also need to be permanently wired to the Netgear or the Extreme if you need more wireless coverage from the Express.

  • AirPort Express not recognized by AirPort Utility, but connected to WiFi network

    Hi all,
This problem with AirPort Express is driving me nuts. I purchased AX to use it mainly for AirPlay, but I never managed to get it fully working.
It seems to be working fine for some time after initial boot, but then the AirPlay play option disappears from iTunes, and AirPort Utility (5.6.1) no longer finds any AirPort device.
I'm using a Planet WNRT-625G router as a base station (connected to my modem box), and I'm joining this WiFi network as a client (I understand extending the network does not work if it's not an AirPort Extreme station?). The WiFi is protected by a WPA2 pre-shared key, and I have tried using different channels. I have assigned a fixed IP to my AX... all to no avail.
In the status details of my router, I can see that the AX is connected, and I am able to ping my AX... but all Apple software cannot find its own device. Any clue what may be going wrong? How does the AirPort Utility find AirPort devices?
Thanks to all in advance for your help and ideas! Appreciate it.
    jfk-007

by design the AX will create a separate network when it starts up for the first time.
click on the airport icon in your menu bar. you should see something like Apple network XXXXXXXX. in order to set up the express, you will have to temporarily join its network !
you will get a message asking "do you really want to switch networks ?" and you do want to do that.  now you should see the AX in AU. click on the icon of the AX once to highlight it, then click continue.
follow onscreen instructions to either have the AX create a new or join an existing network.

  • Airport express not displaying in airport utility

My airport express has been working just fine until today. I took it with me to Hong Kong, so that I could use it in my room to create a wireless network for my iPhone.  When I brought it home, I plugged it back in, and went to re-configure it for my family room. I use it for AirPlay mostly, as my speakers are plugged into it. After I went through the configuration change, there was an error, and the screen told me to close the Airport Utility and retry. Well, I've had no success since. I've reset the AE multiple times, and it still does not display in the airport utilty, and the AE itself flashes yellow.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    ted

Update:  After leaving the utilty on for a while, and plugging the AE into the wall near my time capsule, it finally showed up in the window. I was then able to configure it properly. I guess I just needed to be more patient.

  • Wired AirPort Express not showing in AirPort Utility or iTunes

So I was using my two AirPort Express's to wirelessly play iTunes throughout the house. Recently I wired the house with Cat6 and decided to wire in the AXs for more reliability. My AXs are 1st gen and are running 7.6.1. The problem is, when I turned the wireless off on them, they no longer show up in AirPort Utility or iTunes. I can get them to show in utility by selecting "Configure Other" then manually entering their IP address and password, but that's the only way and they never show in iTunes and disappear from Utility once I "Update". They are wired to a Gigabit switch which is wired to a Netgear router.
    Some additional Info:
Green light is on and solid
I can ping them and connect manually
    "Connect using ethernet" is set
Connection sharing "Off (Bridge Mode)" is set
I also want to extend my wireless range with them, so I've mirrored my wireless settings and used "Create a wireless network" (tried without doing this as well without luck)
    Enable AirPlay is checked
Netgear WNDR3700v2 Router Firmware version 1.0.0.36
    Keebox SGE08 Gigabit Ethernet Switch
    Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 x64
Any idea why I can't see or use them in iTunes and AirPort Utility?
    Thanks!
    -Jake

I wish that I could help you.  I'm having a similar problem, but wireless.
A couple months ago, my two Airport Expresses and my Apple TV disappeared from iTunes AirPlay. When I ran the Airport Utility, the Airports and Apple TV could not be located.  Interestingly, the Airports displayed a green light and all iDevices (iPod Touches and iPads) could connect to the Airports via AirPlay. Like wise, Airport Utility on the iDevices located the Airports. So I connected an Airport to the router via a Ethernet cable.  Once connected via wire and after a hard reset (with an orange light displayed) the Airport Utility found the wire-connected Airport.  I ran the utility to set up the Airport and a green light came on. Then the wire-connected Airport was visible on iTunes AirPlay. So I unplugged the Airplay and returned it to the stereo.  The green light came on, but now neither iTunes not the computer based Airport Utility could find it, even though the iDevices could. I repeated this process expecting a different outcome enough times to be certified insane.
So as I sit my computer based (Windows Vista) Airport Utility and computer based iTunes (the new version) cannot locate the Airport Expresses even though the iDevices readily see them. And their green lights display a connection to the network.
I even tried a forced connection by pasting the Airport's IP address (obtained using Airport Utility on iPad) into the manual configuration of the Airport Utility on the computer.  Oddly, once the IP address was entered, the computer based Airport Utility could see the specs of the Airport Express. But when I tried to save or conclude the Computer based Airport Utility configuration, I got an error.
Another odd thing is that the Remote App on my iDevices no longer works either. I can no longer connect to my iTunes library.  The remote simply can't find my Library at all. (I confirmed that Home Sharing is on).  But I noted that in iTunes is indicated that four devices work connected or linked to the Library.  So I had iTunes "forget" the devices "connected" for Remote and tried to reconnect. I got the number could on the iDevise but the devise never appeared in iTunes Devises for selection.
So whatever problem is preventing iTunes from locating my Airport, is also blocking my iDevises from connecting to iTunes.  Meanwhile, my iDevises can sync with iTunes (while wired - I never tried a wireless sync) and can connect via AirPlay to all Airports.
I've researched this for months and found nothing to work. I'm frustrated to the point of doing something drastic like dumping iTunes and finding some other player to manage my music and stream to my stereos. I'd rather not but the vast majority of my Library can't be played over my stereo.

  • Is it normal for airport express not to show up in utility when extending a network?

Hi, with the help of this community, I think I successfully extended my wifi network by using airport expresses, connected to my time capsule, via my houses electrical system (via powerline adaptors), which ultimately connect via an RJ45 cable to the airport express.  I tried to do it all with the same netwrok, so I do not need to switch to different networks when I move about the house.
I think it works because my signal strenght is much stronger than before I added the powerline adaptors.  So, why am I back here?, two things.  First is I want to make sure I did this all correctly, as I am adding a few more of these powerline adapters as they have really changed my wireless experiences.
What should the internet setting be on the time capsule and airport expresses.  I have it set the "connection" to off (bridge mode) on the TC and the express units.  But the express units blink yellow and says there is a NAT/DHCP error.  something about the time capsule rejecting the sharing?  so I chnage the TC to share a public address and the express to off (bridge mode), and I think this works.
But when I do this, none of the express units show up in the utility anymore.  Should I just take it as a blessing that it seems to be working, and not mess with it?
What should all the setting be?  I am sure that I should be able to see all the units in the utility.
Thanks if this makes any sense to you.

But when I do this, none of the express units show up in the utility anymore.  Should I just take it as a blessing that it seems to be working, and not mess with it?
Did you power cycle the entire network to get things in proper sequence?
If not, power off everything....all devices....order is not important
    Wait a few minutes
Power up the modem first and let it run a moment or two
Power up the Time Capsule the same way
    Power up the powerline devices
Power up each Express one at a time
Power up other devices one at at time
What should the internet setting be on the time capsule and airport expresses.
The setting on the Time Capsule will depend on the type of modem that you have connected. It sounds like the "Share a public IP address" would be correct for the Time Capsule. Everything else must be in "Bridge Mode"
Each of the AirPort Express devices must be configured to "Create a wireless network" using the same wireless network name, security setting and password as the Time Capsule network. Set the Channels as "Automatic" and double check as the last configuration step to make sure that they are set for Bridge Mode.
Then restart the entire network as outlined above and you are in business.
The Express devices should definitely show up in AirPort Utility when you have everything set up.

  • Second AirPort Express not showing up in AirPort Utility

I got a second AirPort Express (APE) to extend my wireless in a different direction from the first but I have not been able to get the new one to show up in the AirPort Utility.
Here are some of the things that I have tried based on my research so far:
-Unplugged APE and waited 30 seconds then plugged it back in
-Pressed reset button untill light blinked, this caused the light to stay solid amber for several seconds then it started slowly blinking again
-Plugged in to Time Capsule with cable, this allowed me to configure the second APE but once I disconnected the cable it still would not connect wirelessly
-Disconected the first APE and "forgot" it in the AirPort Utility, still not able to set up 2nd APE
Did I get a bad unit?

    Answering my own post ...
I first directly connected the AX to the iMac using the ethernet cable, and was able to configure the AX (not sure that I actually had to do this, as my issue was probably due to poor signal strength - as described later). I then moved the AX back to the living room, and was able to connect again, but soon it was dropped. Determined that the signal was weak. I played with positioning the AX to optimize signal, and now am able to get OK signal (only about 1/3 strength, based on number of bars in "fan" shaped icon in menu bar). Was able to stream iTunes to stereo as well, which is great. Also determined that the 2WIRE system that Airport was trying to set up WAS my neighbor (and not my gateway/router). If you don't see "Apple XXXXX" base station and network listed when you are in Airport Admin Utility or Internet Connect (which I didn't, but since I was using 2WIRE gateway/router, assumed that it was my AX when the 2WIRE appeared in the Airport network connection option), then the AX is not properly set up (weak signal or other problem).
So, with the AX in the living room (front of the house), and the iMac in the sun room (back of the house), I am able to get OK, but not great signal from AX. So far, seems to be sufficient to connect to internet and stream iTunes. I may see if I can reposition the AX on the other side of the living room wall, but that will then require running a long cable to connect to the stereo.
Bottom line: 50ft. range of AX may be reduced when used in old (1920's era) houses (thick, plaster walls). Actual distance between AX and iMac is probably 30-40 feet, though they are separated by at least 3-4 walls. If repositioning to other side of wall doesn't do the trick, I may need to step up to Extreme.
I hope this helps others that might have similar problems.
