Airport express or extreme for home wireless network

My Mac Pro is hooked up to my internet upstairs. I would like to hook-up my sony bravia to the internet through a wireless bridge. Do I need the express or extreme? My PS3 is already hooked up to my mac pro through internet sharing. What is the best way to set up an internet connection for my tv and PS3?

  • Can I use airport express to create a local wireless network that my apple tv can connect to for AirPlay/mirroring in student halls/dorm without Internet connection

    Hi I was wondering :
Would I be able to make a local wireless network using airport express that my apple tv can connect to which in turn is connected to a projector with hdmi in so that I can mirror/AirPlay from iPhone pad and mac

will the Airport Express allow you to log onto a hotel wireless network, and broadcast a secure wireless network in your room for your wireless devices, like the Ipad, Iphone, etc.?
The bottom line with a single AirPort Express is no.
The AirPort Express can only "extend" a wireless network when the network is being provided by another Apple router.
As you might imagine, it is extremely unlikely that that the hotel network....which no doubt uses professional wireless access points provided by a manufacturer of commercial systems.....would be compatible with an AirPort Express.
In many years of travel domestically and internationally, I cannot recall a time when a single AirPort Express would "extend" the signal provided by a hotel's wireless network.
However, if you had two AirPort Express devices handy, you might be able to configure one to "join" the hotel network and provide an Ethernet signal to the second AirPort Express, which would be configured to "create" your own "private"  wireless network.

Can I use the Airport Express to log onto an unsecured hotel wireless network, without an ethernet cable, to create a secure wireless network for my MacbookAir, IPad, IPhone, etc.? If so, how is that done?

  • Using the AirPort Express to Join an existing Wireless Network

    Hello,
I am hoping you can provide me with some help on this... I recelty acquired a PowerMac G4 with a 450 MHz processor, CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive, Zip Drive, 1 GB RAM, and two 40 GB HD... The system has OS 10.4 installed, and it is has built-in Ethernet...
I was told I could use the Airport Express to connect to an existing wireless network, so I purchased an Airport Express base Station... Thing is, to e honest, I am having a bit of a problem getting started...
    - First, to connect from the AirPort Express to my G4, do I need a special kind of Ethernet cable, or will the usual kind do?
    - Second do I need to istall the software first, or have the Airport express connected to the G4 before I do?
How would I go about setting this up, step-by-step?
    Any information would be appreciated...
    Thanks for your time...

OK, thanks. Hopefully, the Netgear is creating a wireless network using WPA/WPA2 security. That will make it much easier for the AirPort Express (AX) to join the wireless network. It can join networks with using WEP security, but password issues almost always arise using WEP.
Since you must enter the exact security settings and password for the wireless network, it would help tremendously to know this in advance. Otherwise, it's going to be a series of "trial and errors" and likely frustration, later on.
When you have a moment, check the security settings on the Netgear router.
It might be one of the following: WPA2 Personal, WPA/WPA2 Personal, WEP 128, WEP 40.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
AirPort stations aren't modems, so they have to be connected to the modem you are already using. The AirPort Extreme and Express have a WAN port, where you have to plug an Ethernet cable that has to be connected to the modem.
After doing this, you can set up the AirPort station by using AirPort Utility. If you have Windows, download AirPort Utility from the Apple website > http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1547

  • Time Capsule + Airport Express (no password for extended guest network)

    Hi guys,
I´m using at home an Time Capsule combined with an Airport Express for extended range.
I´ve activated the Guest Network on the Time Capsule, using an WPA2 Password for it.
Problem is, the Airport Express is extending both the regular network and the guest network, but there´s no password set for the extended guest network.
So basically there are 4 networks, 3 are properly secured (TC regular and guest and AE regular) but I can´t set a password for the Guest Network that´s being extended by the Airport Express.
I have looked everywhere on the AirPort Utility with no luck whatsoever.
I appreciate any help on this.
    Kainan-Maki.

Time Capsule and Airport Express, Windows 7
So you don't have a Mac or even iOS device to setup the TC and express?
This addition of extending guest is new in later firmware.. but you need the 6.2 utility to control it.. AFAIK.

  • Can't wirelessly connect HP c7280 for home wireless network using A.express

Hey there, I'm hoping someone can help me. I recently purchased a HP C7280 multifunction printer and have had a wired connection with my new iMac. I'd like to connect wireless and am having extraordinary difficulty. I'm using the latest leopard update. HP doesn't seem to offer any clear assistance. so i'm using an airport express that's connected to my router. I set up a wep key 40 bit and am trying to input that information into the printer's wep key password request. It finds my wireless signal named "Airport" and asks me for a wep key, when i enter the wep key which is 6 letters and 2 numbers, the response I get from the printer is
"key must be >5 or 13 characters OR - >10 or 26 length with 0-9 and A-F (hex). I've tried to follow this request but i can't seem to make it connect. this aforementioned message keeps popping up. what must i do? i've even restored the printers network factory default to no avail

The HPc7280 printer seems to be notoriously buggy. Get the new updated driver from the HP website and try to reinstall from scratch. Make sure you delete the previous driver version, because it might be seeing that it was a wired connection. The HP cannot be set as a default printer on Vista machines, it has to be chosen as a printer. After many hours of setup, our HP is finally working seemlessly with our Macs and PC.

  • Can't get AirPort Express to join LINKSYS WRT54G wireless network

After several unsuccessful attempts to follow Tesserax's advice to get my AX to join my LINKSYS wireless network, I depressed the reset button, plugged the AX in, and waited for the flashing reset confirmation. Reconfiguring from scratch to join my WPA network, all seemed to go well. After selecting to Update, the following window pops up:
<The settings for this AirPort Express have been successfully updated. You can close this window or wait for this AirPort Express to restart.
Waiting for the AirPort Express to restart…>
After a couple of minutes the following window appears:
<AirPort Utility was unable to find your AirPort Wireless device after restarting.
The settings for this AirPort wireless device have been successfully updated, but there was a problem re-joining the wireless network or finding the AirPort wireless device. You may need to select your network from the Wi-Fi menu and try again.>
At this point, AirPort Utility will no longer recognize the AX, no matter how many times I rescan. The only way I can get it to be recognized is to once again do a hard factory reset. I then go through the whole set up process again, only to end up in the same dead end. I'm thinking that there has to be some sort of problem between the AX and the LINKSYS. Prior to the above activity, I was able to send iTunes to the AX just fine. I just wasn't able to surf the Internet at the same time.
Any ideas you might have will be appreciated.

Thomas - I have a very similar problem - I've got a Wi-Fi/ADSL2 router supplied by my telecom company AirTel (the router's called 'beetel', 802.11g model) and I'm having problems extending it with Airport Express - the Airport Utility doesn't seem to be able to detect the AE after restart. The only difference with your case seems that you have a Linksys piece.
    Here's what I tried:
    1. Had my Wi-Fi network up & running with the beetel router (network name: PASTA)
    2. Booted Airport Express
    3. Launched Airport Utility 5.5.3 from Windows 7, detected the Airport Express, chose Manual Setup and went for option "Extend my Wireless Network" and chose PASTA and specified its password
    3. Airport Utility restarted the device after saving changes, and Aiport Express went invisible.
That sounds like the same problem you had.
Just to cross check, I tried connecting an Ethernet cable between AE and the beetel router and went for option "Create Wireless Network" and that was a breeze.
@Tesserax - can Airport Express smoothly extend only an Airport Extreme WiFi network? Is there anything I can do to extend my current Wi-Fi network from this router?
Thanks for your notes & time
    Forrest

  • Airport Express doesn't connect to wireless network after firmware update

    Hi,
I just updated the firmware on my Airport Express to 6.3 and now it will no longer join the network. I have tried reseting to the factory defaults and Airport Utility accepts all the information and shows the unit with a green dot next too it. However, the unit is still flashing amber and in the final step where the Utility tries to save the configuration the update fails and I get the following error message:
An error occurred while reading the configuration.
Please make sure your AirPort base station is plugged in and in range of your computer or connected via Ethernet and try again. (-6753).
I am using an old style AirPort Extreme as a base station.
    Can anyone help?

Wow, really no suggestions yet? This is a first for me, on the Apple Discussion boards!
    Can anyone help?

  • Airport express connection to existing DLink wireless network & old iMac

I have an old iMac (G4 800 mhz). I don't want to buy an old Airport card -- would rather connect to my existing wireless (DLink) network with an Airport Express. Is this possible? Can I go from my cable modem to my DLink wireless router to an Airport Express AND from the Airport Express to my old iMac with an 10/100 Base T Ethernet connection? Essentially will the Airport Express act like an external Airport card? Thanks for any help you can provide... gmosfd

  • Can Airport Express n join a Linksys  wireless network ?

If I already am able to connect to a g airport express, is there anything else that would be keeping me from getting a n unit to connect? I have a Linksys Wireless-N broadband router. I was able to start and go through the initial setup of adding two new n units but when they restarted my mac said there was an error in connecting to them. Am I overlooking something, is my system obsolete or inappropriate or is there something wrong with the units?
    Any advice is well appreciated.

Since Apple designed the "extend" feature on their products to only work with other Apple routers, it would be extremely unliklely that this would be compatible with a Linksys product.

  • My airport express can't see my wireless network

I am bringing up a new AE in my wireless network. I have set all the internet and wireless configurations. I am trying to add it as a client, initially connected to my router via ethernet. After tweaking several settings I am now down to what seems like a critical problem: Airport Utility tells me that my AE cannot see the wireless network. This is a bit amusing since I unplugged the ethernet and am communicating with it solely via wireless.
My config: static IP addr reserved in my router, WPA2 encryption, ethernet clients allowed, using my router as the default DNS server. Running the latest firmware and Airport utility according to Apple Software Update this afternoon. Router is an SMC Barricade N with latest firmware.
Any and all advice greatly appreciated.
    Roger

Thanks for the ideas, but alas those are not the cause.
I am broadcasting SSID and I am running mixed b/g/n mode. FYI Airport Utility finds my network OK, as do the many other pieces of networking equipment in my house (4 computers, a NAS, an SMC wireless client, etc etc etc.) Even my son's Touch, after going through very similar games with Apple, solved by an OS upgrade a couple months later...but I digress.
Spent an hour with the Apple expert on the phone verifying everything was right on the AX and then took it to my local apple store where they were able to connect it to their G router as a client - thus eliminating wrong AX config and broken HW as a cause.
Here is what I know: it has to be able to see my router because when I bring it up my router sees it and issues it an IP address. I might reserve the IP and then set it to always use that. That is one of the things we did to get the Touch working initially.
Again, thanks and any new ideas appreciated.

  • Using apples airport express to extend a linksys wireless network

    HI there,
Is it possible to configure the apple airport express to extend a linksys wrt120N wireless network? if so how?

So the concern that you expressed regarding to that if the apple airport express is N technology kind of extender then it may extend a linksys wrt120N wireless network... But before configuring the apple airport express try upgrading the firmware of the Router and then reset the router.....
After resetting the router power cycle the whole network and configure the Router again as per  ISP ( Internet Service Provider ) setup...

  • Using Airport Express to boost range of wireless network

I have a Virgin wireless broadband connection (using a netgear router), but the range is poor and so want to set up my airport express to boost the range of the network. This option is available in Airport Utility, but when I try to set it up, once I've inputted my WPA password a dialog box on top of the main screen pops up asking me to select from the list of Apple wireless devices. Annoyingly, the Express device doesn't show up in the dialog box, although I can see it showing up in the main Utility screen behind it. I can set it up to play iTunes etc. no problem - any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

Unfortunately, most non-AirPort routers are not compatible with Apple's implementation of Wireless Distribution System (WDS)...so it very unlikely that your Netgear router can be extended wirelessly with the AirPort Express Base Station (AX).
The only Netgear, that I'm aware, that is supposed to be compatible, is the Netgear WGR614 with v6 firmware.

  • Airport Express Won't Connect To Wireless Network

My AE was working perfectley fine until one day everything  just stopped working including music streaming. I try doing a facotory reset and then set everything back up again, but when I try to connect it to my wifi i get an error message that states "an unexpected error occured. Please try again" what should i do?

3 things must occur when the AirPort Express is configured to join a wireless network.
You must know the name of the wireless network....you probably do
You must know the password of the wireless network...you probably do
You must know the exact type of wireless security setting that the wireless network is using....you may not know this, but it is crucial that the AirPort Express is provided with the same settings.
Suggest that you contact AT&T support if you do not know the exact type of wireless security that the 2-Wire router is using, so you can then provide the AirPort Express with the correct setting to join the network.
