Airport express or modem?

I have a 2006 Macbook and a 3 or 4 year old airport express. I have Cox Communications as my internet provider. Recently, on two occassions, I have had to call Cox to send a signal to the modem but at the same time the airport utility box is saying I have problems with my router. I have unplugged the AE and the flashing amber light became green but seeing that this is a recurrant problem I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem before I call and spend $50 for tech support.Don't know where to begin looking for the problem.
Thanks for any advise.

Try the following, in order, until (hopefully) resolved:
1a. Delete Preferred Network(s)
System Preferences > Network > AirPort > Advanced > AirPort tab
Under "Preferred Networks," delete the network(s) you regularly use from the list.
1b. Delete AirPort Keychain Entries
Launch the "Keychain Access" application located in Applications/Utilties.
Click on the "Kind" filter at the top, and look for any "AirPort network password" entries...and delete them.
1c. Add Preferred Network(s)
System Preferences > Network > AirPort > Advanced > AirPort tab
Add the preferred network(s) using the "+" button.
Restart or log out then back in.
2. Move System Configuration Files
(Note: You will have to reestablish your network connections settings.)
Go to /Library/Preferences
Move the SystemConfiguration folder to the desktop.
Restart your Mac. (Note: OS X will rebuild the files that are now sitting on your desktop. If this doesn't resolve the issue, you can move the folder back to it's original location.)
3. Run the Disk Utility to repair Disk Permissions.
Restart or log out then back in.
4. Turn off the Mac OS X Firewall
System Preferences > Sharing > Firewall
Click the "Stop" button.
5. Create a New User Account
System Preferences > Accounts
Click "+" to add a new account
Log off, then log back on with the new user account.
Try connecting with the AirPort.

  • Airport express without modem

I am traveling and want to use my airport express airplay with a Bose Wave radio in a location with limited wireless.  Do I need a wireless network to use airplay to my imac?

Hello Low77. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Can you set up a wireless network using Airport Express without a modem?
Yes. By default, the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) will create a stand-alone wireless network which you can connect up to 10 wireless clients for file or printer sharing.
Can I just plug in the ethernet cable on my desk to Airport Express for it to work?
You do not need to plug it into an Ethernet cable for it to work. However, if you require network or Internet access, the Ethernet cable needs to be connected to a network or have Internet access.

  • Slow internet: Mac Mini - Airport Express - 2Wire modem

I have SBC DSL, which came with a 2Wire wireless modem/router. I then bought an Airport Express and nicely networked a printer and two Windows XP Machine. The trouble started when I bought (ironically) a Mac Mini with a wireless (Airport Extreme?) ethernet card. The Mac has much slower download speeds! We're talking 150 kbps on the Mac, versus ~1 Mbps on the Win XP box.
I'm guessing there is a magic setting on the DSL modem which will help. Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Morgan Brown

This problem lies with the Mac mini - there aren't any settings on the DSL modem that will fix this problem. I would start by having an Apple service center confirm the wireless interface in this Mac mini is performing properly (since it is still covered by the warranty).

  • Airport Express, ethernet modem Ethernet Volume

I use Airport Express to network my computers. My satellite modem is connected to Airport via the ethernet port
    All works well.
Now I want to add an ethernet disc/volume so it wii be available on the network. Since the AP EN port is taken by the modem; Can I add a second Airport Express, have it access the existing network, and use its' ethernet port for the disc drive?
Will the 2 ethernet devices intervere with each other? Will the Disc deive be visible on the network?

If I understand correctly, yes, you can do that, but I'd suggest hooking a FW or USB drive to your iMac, then use Sharepoints...

  • Airport express wired   modem?

Hi. My internet connection is slowing down so I was thinking about buying a new router. I have a desktop which can't connect to wireless signals so I have to connect it through a wired connection. My modem doesnt have a wifi built in so I was wondering if its possible to plug in my modem to the airport express and have another ethernet wire connected to my desktop through the airport express. I am kinda confused cause it says one is a LAN connection while the other is a WAN.

I am assuming that your modem is, just that, a simple broadband modem and not a combination modem/router or gateway device. If that is correct, with the latest version of the AirPort Express Base Station (AXn), you would connect one Ethernet cable between the modem's Ethernet port and the WAN (circle-of-dots) port on the AXn. You would then connect a second cable between the AXn's LAN (opposing arrows) port and the Desktop PC.

  • Configuring Airport Express and Modem/Router

I have a Siemens SX763 ADSL Modem/Router which I wish to use a simply an ADSL modem connected to my Airport Express which will act as wireless network.
I have switched off wireless on the SX763 and also DHCP server, which I expect the AX will act as. However I cannot get an internet connection from modem to AX. The usual connection is PPPoA with username/pwd - other options are PPPoE and Bridging(MER). My suspicion is that I should select bridging here and enter my ISP username/pwd via the AX.
Can anybody confirm my thinking or perhaps offer alternative suggestions?
    Cheers
    Darryn

    Darryn, welcome to the discussions!
You have a couple of options here:
I assume that the Express be connected to your Siemens with an ethernet cable, correct?
If you normally use the Siemens in your system, you could turn off the wireless for it and then setup the AirPort Express up as a bridge in your network. The Express would be set to "Create a Wireless Network" The Siemens would then furnish the DHCP and NAT services in this setup.
Alternately, if you wanted to the Express to provide PPPoE, DHCP and NAT services, you would need to set the modem up as a simple bridge. (Here, I assume that there is a setup page for the modem that would allow this.) The Express would be set to Connect with PPPoE and you would need to enter your user name and password during the setup for the Express. The Express would also be set to "Create a Wireless Network" in this configuration.
Either of these configurations should work fine. It's basically your choice of which device you want to handle the log on, DHCP and NAT services.

  • My wireless network looses connection between airport express and modem.

The indicator under the "Internet" icon in airport utility switches from green to amber every minute or so.  When it is amber I have no, or very slow speed.

Interestingly the Linksys WRT-54G is one of the few non-Apple routers that are WDS-compatible with the earlier 802.11g AirPorts. There are a number of posts on the Internet (use the following search terms: Linksys AirPort WDS) where the authors described how they configured theirs to work.
If; however, you don't want to "experiment," your suggestion to interconnect the two routers by Ethernet should work just fine. In this case, you would want to configure them both for a roaming network.

  • Getting ARD to see an iMac behind Airport Express

I have a client that has bought an iMac and is connected to the internet using Airport Express (adsl modem is connected to express with ethernet cable, and modem is connected to the telephone line, problem is that when I am in my studio and try to connect to my clients iMac (which is in another building) it comes back with 'offline' even though it is not.
I am presuming I have to alter a number of setting before it will let me in, can anyone tell me what, and where they are.
    Thanks in advance

Use the Airport Admin Utility and forward ports 3283 and 5900 on the Airport Express to the IP address of the iMac.

  • Constant activity on airport express

Any ideas why my Airport Express (and modem) are constantly showing activity?
I've set security and access control. Even tried switching channels from 11 to 6.
It's not that I'm seeing slow speeds, but who knows what I could be getting?
BTW, I'm on Comcast and using they're Motorola router.
    Thanks.
P.S. Any reason I couldn't put a switch between the modem and the router?

  • Can't connect to Airport Express - "Connection timeout" error msg

Two weeks ago my wireless internet connection failed abruptly.  Since then I have spent time troubleshooting this problem at the Genius Bar of local Apple Store where the problem cannot be replicated with the same equipment (my Airport Express and MacBk Pro).  I have since traded out my old Airport Express for a new one and had the same problem after bringing it home and attempting a setup of the new device.  I went back to Genius Bar and setup new Airport Express only to bring it back home and have the same issue.  Both the modem and the Airport Express have been reset in previous attempts to connect wirelessly.  Equipment is as follows:
    2011 MacBook Pro, OS X10.6.8
    2011 Airport Express
Cable Modem: Motorola SURFboard, model SB5120
    ISP: Comcast
The Airport Express is hardwired to Motorola modem and there is no other network running in my apartment.
    Any suggestions?

Did you ever get this problem fixed? I have a very similar issue going on...

  • Amber Light keeps flashing - can't configure my AirPort Express

Here is my setup: Dell XPS M1530 running Windows Vista. I have my cable modem directly plugged into my AirPort Express. I have no other wireless network or router.
I'm able to connect to the AirPort Express through my wireless card and establish a connection and surf the net but the Airport Utility Software won't let me configure the device and the light keeps flashing amber. It never turns to green. I've tried every combination of resetting my AirPort Express, cable modem and computer.
I can see the AirPort Express Base Station icon on the left hand side of the AirPort utility software , when I click "manual setup" or "continue" it try to detect a wireless device but it always comes back with a the message: "An error occurred while trying to access the Apple wireless device. Make sure your network connection is valid and try again. error -4"
    Am I missing something?

Temporarily, disconnect the ethernet cable from the Express that is coming from the modem.
Connect an ethernet cable from your computer to the AirPort Express, turn off wireless on the computer, and see if AirPort Utility can access the settings that way. If so, go ahead and set it up.
If you are able to configure the device, then you will get an error message that you do not have an internet connection...because the Express is not connected to the modem.
When you re-connect the ethernet cable from the modem to the Express and restart both the modem and Express, you should get the green light.
Depending on the type of modem you have, some additional configuration may be needed. The important thing at this point is to get AirPort Utility to access the settings on the Express so that you can configure it.
You may need to do the factory reset again on the Express. If AirPort Utility still cannot access the settings on the Express after this, try another computer, Mac if possible, to see if that might be the issue.
Sometimes, an internal component fails within the Express. When this occurs, AirPort Utility cannot access the device no matter what, and there are really no other options except to replace the device.
Please post back on your progress.

  • Airport Express keeps unsyncing.

My Airport Express keeps unsyncing. I must power off and on the device, for it to be recognized by the airport utility. What can i do to solve this? After it's restart, it works fine for some time but unsyncs after some time. I'm using Mac OS X 10.6.8 (10K549) on a MacBook 13".
Thanks in advance, and Merry Christmas!

A simple power cycle on the router might help before changing the setup or extra testing.
The two main setups for the existing router & AirPort Express:
    1. modem/router ))) Express (Join an existing network)
        modem/router ))) MacBook
    2. modem/router <...> Express ))) MacBook
    (Creating a new wifi network)
you'll need to put one in Bridge Mode.
A good test to see if the AirPort Express is working fine would be to create a new wifi network without internet connected (light will be amber) and see if the airplay drop outs happen without the router in the setup.

  • Airport Express – Does it wear out after a few years?

Does an Airport Express wireless modem wear out after a few years?
Recently I've come home a number of times to find no wireless on my iMac, iPhone and iPad even though the airport unit is displaying a green light. Also, sometimes when I've left the iMac in sleep mode recently, I've returned and gotten either no signal or a prompt for my password, which is saved on the iMac.
Generally, rebooting the Airport unit and/or the devices fixes the problem – until it happens the next time.
I bought my Airport Express in late 2005. My mother, who bought her Airport express six-to-12 months earlier, is having the same problems.
Has anybody else encountered this issue?

I think some of the older original models did fail sooner. But that was a short lived period. Solid state electronics don't "wear out" - that's what makes them so reliable and great compared to tubes.
I thought mine was bad but I did what is called a hard restart of the unit. This fixed it. Caution though: don't do these hard restarts all the time. They will damage the unit if used too often.
See owners manual for how to do a hard restart. It's a bit tricky and involved holding in the reset while plugging it in. Read directions first. Also, try the soft restart options first before you use this nuclear option. But the hard restart seems to fix things for good once done.

  • Connecting to Comcast using airport express

My wife bumped the Airport express router that connects to our comcast modem.  I unplugged both, reset the comcast modem, waited 3-4 minutes, then plugged the airport express router back in the socket.  Went downstairs, couldnt connect to the internet according to the airport express utility application.  Green light on airport express, orange light on the "Internet" in the utility.  Called Comcast, total waste of time after 1.5 hrs of "tech support"  was told to call Apple .  Computer is 4 years old, has been working fine up to this  point.  Apple wants me to pay $49 for support.  nothing guaranteed.
Any suggestions?  I've tried turning off IMAC, running upstairs, unplug airport express, unplug modem, push reset on modem, wait 4 minutes for modem to fire back up, plug airport express back in, run downstairs, turn on IMAC, run airport express utility and same result, green for airport express router, orange for internet.
Opened up Safari, tried network diagnostics troubleshooting, it eventually asks me if we are DHC? or PPPoE.  I choose PPPoE and enter comcast for service provider, enter username and password (as verified by Comcast) during my 1.5 hour session.  trys to connect.  goes back to same screen of do we have DHCP or PPPoE.
    Frustrating!
Neighbor told me to plug IMAC directly into Modem and see what happens using an Ethernet hard connection.  Will try tonight.
    Any assistance is appreciated.

    Bob,
I plugged the Ethernet directly into my Imac, clicked on DHCP, and I was connected.  Plugged my airport express back in, unplugged cord from computer back to airport express, waited for green light on airport, tried to connect to my network, unable to get to the Internet.  Wifi was on, just not able to connect to the internet.
So, I unplugged again, plugged ethernet cord into computer, back on the internet.
Puzzled.  Airport seems to be working fine, amber light when first plugged in, green light after a few minutes.
Tried plugging in airport to comcast modem, reset modem, waited 5 minutes, tried to connect to internet, not able to do so.
Airport utility says airport express is fine.
needless to say, Im at a high level of frustration.  Never ever had a problem this bad.
wondered if I unplugged airport express for 24 hours, then tried again, hoping it would clear out any memory on board and start the whole process of creating a new network over again.
    Suggestions?
    Thanks by the way.
    George

  • Wireless modem and Airport Express.. one at a time

Recently my internet provider upgraded my old plug in modem to a newer wireless model. Now it seems that the current setting allow communication with only one or the other at the same time. If I want to be online with the wireless modem and send my iTunes music via Airport Express to my sound system, no dice. I have to either click on the modem up in the Airport choices to be online and listen to iTunes through the computer speakers, or go offline to listen to music through the sound system and Airport Express.
I'm sure I'm just missing something in preferences or settings somewhere.
Can someone point me in the right direction?
    Thanks, and Happy New Year!
