AirPort Express over Ethernet lost the connection

I have an AirPort Express device. It's works well, if I connect it over WLAN. If I connect the AirPort Express over Ethernet via cable, then after about 15 minutes, I lost the connection between my PC and the AirPort Express.
Does I have to change settings in my router?

then when I try to switch it to extending
That is not the correct setting to use.
"Extending" is only used when an AirPort connects using a wireless connection to another AirPort router.
When the AirPort connects using Ethernet, you have to use the "Create a wireless network" setting.
It might be a lot easier if you simply start all over again and let the configuration "wizard" do most of the work for you. All that you really have to do is name the network, name the Express, enter the password and click Next.  Everything else is handled by the configuration utility.
Post back if you are not sure how to do this.

  • Trouble getting PM G4 to connect to Airport Express over Ethernet

I was wondering if folks could give me some guidance on how to get my PowerMac G4 (older model with NO airport card) to pull an IP address from an Airport Express. I have the Powermac G4 and Airport Express in one area of my house. The Airport Express is setup as WDS remote on channel 1. I have an Airport Extreme Base Station in another area (setup as WDS main on channel 1) which is connected to my DHCP-enabled Linksys router. Both the Extreme and Express units are set in bridging mode. I was hoping the PM G4 (which is connected to the Airport Express via an Ethernet cable) would pull the IP address off the network (I have the G4 set for DHCP) but so far it is only pulling a bad IP address - not within the range that the Linksys router should be providing.
    Any suggestions?

A Mac computer or laptop.....with a sophisticated operating system.....will automatically connect to the wireless access point with the best signal quality based on its location in relation to the device producing the wireless signal.
So, if you move the Mac from one area to another, it will automatically "switch" to pick up the stronger wireless signal from the closest wireless access point.
Other devices....with simplified wireless software.....usually will not do this...and instead will tend to always connect to the first device with which they originally connected.
If you want a device to connect to a specific wireless access point, you might want to try deleting the current wireless connection on the device, moving it very close to the AirPort Express, and then configuring the device to connect to the wireless network again.
With luck, the device will now pick up the stronger signal from the AriPort Express. But, if it does, it will probably stay locked onto the AirPort Express if you then move the device back closer to the AirPort Extreme.

  • Airport express over ethernet blocks my wifi

    Hi.
I have a wifi network via a modem from my ISP and I want to extend it with an Airport Express.
When I connect it over Ethernet, I can configure it to extend the network, but despite having a strong connection (i.e. 4 bars on my MBA, iPhone, etc.), I can't access the internet. There's just no access.
If anyone has any ideas about how I can fix this, I'd be extremely grateful!
    Thanks

  • ITunes 7.1 doesn't recognize Airport Express over ethernet

Running iTunes 7.1 on Windows XP desktop. Immediately after update, iTunes no longer can see my Airport Express as a remote speaker (Airtunes over Ethernet).
Airport Express has the latest updates. Airport Utility has no trouble recognizing it by name. It doesn't have a password on it. The Airport is happily providing wireless for my laptop. It is my only WiFi base station, because I have a small place. It's been dependable for over a year.
I'm truly bummed, because earlier today I got a Griffin AirClick USB, and it works like a charm. I was looking forward to using it with full-screen coverflow in 7.1.
iBook G4 and assorted Win & Linux boxes   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   iTunes is on an XP PC

The problem turns out to be an incompatibility with Bonjour for Windows. A post by "f00fighter" over in the "iTunes for Windows Upgrade Issues" forum solved it. I quote him below:
    ******Quote***********
Looks like this issue is due to an incompatibility between Bonjour for Windows and iTunes 7.1.0.59 for Windows (thanks toonz!)
To workaround the issue you can stop the Bonjour Service by going to Start \ Control Panel \ Administrative Tools \ Services, then highlight the Bonjour Service and stop it. You might also want to set the Startup status of the Bonjour Service to Manual (or Disabled) to prevent the service from starting automatically the next time you restart you PC.
Note - this is only a temporary fix, and turns off the Bonjour service...so don't do this if you have other applications that rely on the Bonjour Service. A fix from Apple is needed to truly "fix" this issue.

  • Can I connect Tower w/o wireless card into my Airport Express via ethernet for internet?

Greetings. I have an airport extreme sending wireless internet signal all over the house. I have a music studio computer Intel Xeon that has no wireless card in a seperate room. Am I able to configure an older Airport Express 802.11g that is connected wirelessly to the Extreme signal to connect to internet signal to my tower via the ethernet connection on the Airport Express?... i.e., connect the ethernet cable from my tower to the ethernet port on the Express to access internet signal? If so do I have to set up the Express for a certain kind of configuration that is different than, say, if I were using the airport express for airplay or a printer?
Thank you for your help. Jeff

Am I able to configure an older Airport Express 802.11g that is connected wirelessly to the Extreme signal
Unfortunately, the older AirPort Express model that you have does not have this type of capabiility.....an "n" version of the AirPort Express would be able to do what you want.
Look for a Model A1264 or Model A1392.  The A1392 is the newer version, but the A1264 would do fine.
Here I assume that you have an 802.11"n" version of the AirPort Extreme.

  • Apple Airport Express  N Ethernet connection problems...

    Hello,
I have just setup my apple airport express to connect to my belkin wireless N router F5D8636-4 v2 via Ethernet. I have turned all the wireless features off on the express as I'm only using it to send music to my DAC. It is assigned I.P by DHCP all other computers are manually asigned I.Ps so no conflicts. My computer is also wired to the router and running windows 7 64bit. It all works great apart from when I turn my P.C off.
When I turn it back on it cannot find the airport express over LAN until I reset the apple airport express by powering it down and back on. Is this right? Surely not? OR when im finished with my hi-fi should I be turning the apple airport express off?
    Anyone got any suggestions?

The Express can effectively extend the 2-Wire network if 4 conditions are met during the configuration of the Express to create a wireless network:
    1)  Same wireless network name as the 2-Wire network
    2)  Same wireless network security as the 2-Wire network
    3)  Same password as the 2-Wire network
    4)  Bridge Mode Operation
Most users know 1) and 3), but 2) is the real key here. If the wireless security setting of the 2-Wire and Express do not match up exactly....then you will have 2 separate wireless networks instead of the seamless network that you desire.
So, the first question....do you know the exact type of security settings that the 2-Wire router is using?  If not, it is not possible to configure the Express the way that you want without a long trial and error guesswork process.
You may need to contact your service provider to find out how to access the settings to learn what they are.
If you do know the exact security settings being used by the 2-Wire router, post back with that info and we can provide a step by step configuration guide if you want.
I assume that you are using OS X 10.6.8 as your profile indicates.

  • Connecting to multiple Airport Express base stations at the same time?

I want to be able to use wireless internet and stream music to my stereo at the same time, but I only have a single internet connection behind my stereo and it's connected to the Pay TV. My options seem to be getting a new line installed behind the stereo so I can insert this into the same Airport Express base station I use for my music, or buying a second Airport Express base station and connecting it to one of the other internet connections in the room, then connecting to both Airport Express base stations at the same time.
Is this possible? Are there other alternatives?
    Many thanks

Nate, Welcome to the discussion area!
Once you have a network, you can connect multiple AirPort Express (AX) to that network (wirelessly or via Ethernet). When your computer joins that network it can access all the AX.
You could take your current internet connection and run it into an inexpensive router with multiple Ethernet ports (not the AX). If this is a wireless router then your AXs could be located elsewhere and connect as wireless clients to that network. Once you computer joined that network it could stream music to the AXs.

  • Connecting to Airport Express via Ethernet Cable

    Dear Apple Support Community,
My setup at home is such that all my devices are in such close proximity to the Airport Express, and therefore I connect everything to the Airport Express via ethernet cables (NAS, Apple TV, PS 3).
The final step in my network setup would be to connect my Macbook to the Airport Express to connect to the internet using the Ethernet Cables, instead of using the wireless connection - because my Macbook is positioned right next to the Airport Express.
However, I am struggling to get the Macbook to connect to the Internet via the Ethernet Cable through the airport express. Is there a special way to set this up if this can be done. I know Wireless would be the answer, but the problem is, when I download movies etc, I write the files directly onto the NAS which happens a lot quicker than doing so via WiFi.
I hope the above question makes sense.
Thanks in advance for any feedback.
    Regards
    ST

Hello Brian Hunt1. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
I have an old PowerBook G3 and I do not have a wireless card for it. My plan was to connect it, via Ethernet cable to my airport express which is on my home wireless network (DSL to Mac Mini to AirPort Express via built-in AirPort).
Unfortunately, the network configuration your describing, where you would use OS X's Internet Sharing feature to share the Mac Mini's wired Internet connection wirelessly with the AirPort Express Base Station (AX), won't work.
If I cannot connect my laptop this way, could anyone suggest a wireless card that is compatible with this slightly antiquated, yet very useful machine?
Only the "Pismo" PowerBook G3 is capable of using the original AirPort card. If you have this model, then the following DIY instructions will show you how to install it.
If this isn't your model, then check out the following vendor offerings:
    o QuickerTek
    o hField Technologies' Wi-Fire

  • I just purchased a wireless connection for my Tivo but the signal strength from my airport express does not allow the tivo to load data. How do I increase the signal strength?

I just purchased a wireless N network adapter for the TIVO premier and am trying to use my apple airport express to connectand it  is in the another room. I am only receiving one  bar of strength on my network adapter. How can I raise the signal strength of my airport express.

There are several things that might help, not all of which would be feasible depending on your situation:  (1) Move the TiVo unit and AirPort Express closer together.  (2) Use another AirPort Express to "extend" the network of the first AirPort Express.  Put the second AirPort Express half way between the first AirPort Express and the TiVo unit.  (3) In the general case, Power-Line equipment might allow the TiVo unit to get a good signal, but it's likely that the Ethernet port of your AirPort Express is probably connected to your broadband modem, so that solution wouldn't work for you.  (4) Changing the band or channel that the AirPort Express is using might help.  If the TiVo unit is connection on the 5 GHz band, try one of the three-digit channels, which are allowed to use higher power.

  • Airport express second generation do not connect to the internet

Airport express second generation do not connect to the internet. I changed my location and the problem happened . Earlier it was running smoothly. I am not finding the cause of the problem. I switched on and off several times but the problem persists. Please help me.

Are you asking the make/model of the computer or the AX base station?
Neither, I was interested in the make/model of the cable modem.
Our ethernet connection was fried in an electrical storm so we had to go wireless.
Electrical storms are never a good thing when it comes to electronics. What was/is your current network configuration? Is it something like the following?
Cable modem > (Ethernet cable) > AX > (wireless) > wireless devices
Is there another router, other than the AX, in the configuration? ... or an Ethernet switch? I'm just trying to understand your network to best advise you on how to configure the AX.

  • How do I setup Airport express with ethernet connection to my modem?

Hi there - hoping to get some helpg as I'm having challnges setting up my Airport express via ethernet cable connection directly to my router.  It will setup wirelessly no problem, but I occasionally get dropouts when streaming music and I'm hoping to remedy that with a direct cable connection.  I know I have to change some settings in my airport utility, but haven't had any luck getting it right.
Here is my setups if it helps:
Airport express, 1st generation, model A1264
Cisco router (provided by my intenet provider)
    Macbook Air, running 10.8.5
    Airport utility version 6.3.1
    Thanks!
    Phil

Unfortunately, you are getting incorrect advice here. Might be a good idea to start a new post, since the original thread is long out of date.
First, please confirm that you have a compatible Express with the AirPort Extreme. This would be either the current A1392 version.....or the previous A1264 version.
Next, we need to confirm "how' you want to extend, since you do not mention this in your post.
Are you planning to "extend" by connecting the AirPort Express to the AirPort Extreme using a permanent, wired Ethernet connection (highly recommended).....or.....are you trying to "extend" by having the Express try to connect wirelessly to the AirPort Extreme?

  • Question re AEBS Connected to Airport Express via Ethernet

If I have an AEBS that is being used to extend the range of my wireless network, if I connect an Airport Express via Ethernet to this AEBS for purposes of itunes airtunes will this work and will the wireless network remain wireless-n?

    Yes, it will.
You also have the option of (a) completely turning off the radio on the Airport Express or (b) leaving it on, and using it to create a b/g point of access to your LAN thus allowing you to run the AEBSn in n-only mode for your n-capable wireless clients.

  • Connecting aiport extreme and airport express via ethernet cable ?

Is it possible to connect an airport extreme to an airport express via ethernet cable, I ask because I want to expand the range of my wifi network to the basement of my house, the floors are really thick concrete so I installed some ethernet cable runs, I hope somebody can help me, thank you.

+How do I do it ? Do I connect the modem to the airport extreme and then run the ethernet cable from one of the extreme's ethernet ports to the express ethernet on the basememt and a second cable from another of the extreme's ethernet connectors to the express on the second floor+
    Yes, this is exactly correct.
To configure each AirPort Express (AX)
Open AirPort Utility, click Manual Setup
Click the Base Station tab below the icons to name your device, assign a device password and adjust time zone settings. Give each Express a separate name so you can identify then easily.
    Click the Wireless tab
    Wireless Mode...Create a Wireless Network
Wireless Network Name...Exact same name as your AirPort Extreme network
Radio Mode 802.11n (802.11b/g compatible) if you want to use 2.4 GHz
    Channel...Automatic
Wireless Security...Exact same setting as your AirPort Extreme network
Wireless Password....Exact same setting as your AirPort Extreme network
    Click the Internet icon
Change the Connection Sharing setting at the bottom to "Off (Bridge Mode)"
Click Update at the lower right and the AirPort Express will restart in 20-30 seconds
I think it is easier to configure each AirPort Express with AirPort Utility by temporarily connecting it to your computer with a short ethernet cable. Once you have saved the configuration, you can move the Express to the location that you need.
Please post back on your progress.

  • Connecting Two Airport Express Via Ethernet

I have a unique situation in which I would like to connect two airport express via ethernet. Here is the situation: I can connect the first AX directly to the internet and set up a WDS for the second AX. Unfortunately, the second AX signal does not reach where I need it to go. I can run an ethernet cable between the two. Is this setting valid for a WDS? Or does the WDS have to be wireless? If I can set up the WDS using an ethernet, will the relay AX broadcast the internet wirelessly then?
Are there any specific settings I should know about?
    Any help would be great.
    Thanks in advance,
    Debbie

I currently have an old snow basestation at this location. Can I plug an ethernet cable into it and connect it to the AX?
    Yes that will work.
My understanding was that the older basestation could not do this?
I think you have it confused with extending a network wirelessly. That is not possible with the snow AirPort base station (ABS).
