AirPort Express password & printer trouble

I recently upgraded from Tiger to Leopard to Snow Leopard. Since then I have been unable to use my AirPort Express to print to my HP Photosmart C4180.
In trying to solve this problem, I came across this article http://support.apple.com/kb/TA21200 When I open the Utilities for AirPort it says that I need to update my firmware, but it requires my password to do so. The password that I wrote down for the AirPort does not work, nor does any other one I ever use. There is no "forgot password" button, so what should I do?
Thanks!

Welcome to the discussions!
When you are updating firmware or system software, you are asked for your main administrator password. This is the password you setup to log onto your Mac.

How can I retrieve my Airport Express password?

If you have a Mac that can connect to your wireless network and you're using an Apple AirPort Base Station, then simply use AirPort Utility. From the Base Station menu, select Show Passwords...
If you don't have a Mac, reset your wireless network password by momentarily depressing the reset button on your AirPort Extreme, Express, or Time Capsule. Press the button for one full second, no more. Then, configure a new password using AirPort Utility.
If you can't connect to your wireless network, or you are not using an Apple AirPort Base Station, you can use the procedure that follows below to retrieve it from your Mac's Keychain.
Your wireless network password is stored in your Mac's Keychain.
You must first have an Administrator account on a Mac that you use with that AirPort Base Station, one that is used to connect to your AirPort network.
On that Mac, open the Utilities folder. Find Keychain Access and launch it.
In the search field at the upper right, type Airport. All the Keychain entries for your base station will appear there, as well as other entries.
Look at the column "Kind". The entry you want to select will be labeled "AirPort network password" (not "AirPort base station password" or anything else).
If you are trying to recover the AirPort Base Station password then the entry you want to select will be labeled "AirPort base station password" not "AirPort network password".
Double-click that, and in the window that appears check the box for "Show password".
You will get the following window:
In the Password field type your Mac's Administrator password - the same one you used to log in to that Mac.
Then, click Allow, and your wireless network password will appear in the "Show password" field:
    Make note of it.
Close the window, then quit Keychain Access.

You can configure the AirPort Expess to "Join a wireless network" and enable the Ethernet port so that Ethernet devices will be able to connect.
In order to print from the iOS devices, you will need to have an application like Printopia installed on your Mac. The Mac must be active when you want to print.
More details here: Printopia - AirPrint to Any Printer - Print from iPad - Print from iPhone ...
There is a free trial available for Printopia, so make sure that it will work before you buy the AirPort Express.

Hi. I messed up. I lost airport express password. Can anyone help me out?
    Thanks for your time.
    Sincerely,

I know Time Capsule has a small reset button on the back.  I'm not sure but I think the Airport Express does as well.
On Time Capsule, you could use something pointed (such as a ballpoint pen) to press down and hold the reset button until the status light flashes quickly (about 5 seconds).  After that time, the password will reset to "public".

  • Airport express not printing in Mountain Lion

Installed Mountain Lion no problem but having trouble printing wirelessly to an Epson R260 connected to an airport express.  Worked flawlessly in Lion.  Now, I can install and reinstall the printer wirelessly but when it goes to print the process just "processes" and nothing happens.  The Epson site is not helpful.  It gives instructions for software update with the printer physically connected by USB, but following those instructions the app store says no updates (on anything).

I have three printers up and running connected to an Air Port Express,
and since I upgraded to Lion I can't connect to any of them, so I continued using SL on this MBP17.
System Preferences does not show any of my printers.
I opened Air Port and it says I need to update.
When I click on the update button, it takes me to the App Store, but no Air Port Software — What gives?
Now having the same problems with Mountain Lion.
Hoped ML would fix the problem, but NO.
I find I have to save documents to a flash drive and go to my old PowerMac G4 to print.
Steve we miss you. Apple is going to crap without you.

  • How can i change my old airport express password with mavericks

I just bought a new TV and I am trying to connect to my wi-fi, which runs via an old Airport Express. The TV manufacturer says that I should try changing my password from a WEP to WPA - but it seems that I can't even access my Airport Express because it's not supported by Mavericks. Is there a work-around, or do I need to upgrade my Airport Express? It's running fine otherwise - supports multiple laptops and iPhone.

  • Can I use Airport Express for printing and Ethernet printing at same time?

I've been trying to set up a couple of laser printers that were given to me recently. The printers are Apple LaserWriter 16/600 PS and Samsung CLP-510. The reason I'd like to have both up and running is because the black toner for the Samsung costs twice as much as the toner for the LaserWriter. I have two questions that I am hoping someone will be able to answer.
    1) The CLP prints a test page just fine. I was finally able to get the Samsung printing while directly connected to my PowerBook G4 via usb (I had to install a Xerox Phaser 6100 driver to do so!). Today I tried putting the usb into my Airport Express (which I use for my portable internet and airtunes) and now the printer does not respond. When I try to add the CLP as a bonjour printer, I get an error adding the printer and the printer does not respond. Can someone offer some advice as to how and if the CLP may work via the Airport Express?
    2) The LaserWriter prints a test page just fine. I purchased a transceiver (albeit not an Apple transceiver - this one says Asante Friendlynet, the guy I bought it from said it would work though). The transceiver is connected to the Ethernet port on the printer - and I have a yellow ethernet cable (?) running from the transceiver to the ethernet port on my computer. I read somewhere on the internet that I need to turn on Appletalk in order to use the printer via ethernet but when I went into my network settings to do that, there was a warning that I could not turn on appletalk for ethernet without forsaking my airport. Can someone offer some advice as to how and if the 16/600 PS may work via ethernet without disrupting my (working) airport express? Also - I did not receive any software or drivers with this printer but I read that I may not need to (they come with Tiger - ?) Is anyone able to confirm this?
Any help would be TOTALLY appreciated!
    Leigh-Ann

Hello Kappy! Thank you for taking the time to reply to my question.
I should update you at this point to say that I can add the 16/600 PS printer through a process that I found called 'Direct IP printing over ethernet'. (I think I've done this correctly - but I honestly have no idea about network stuff). Here's what I did:
-went into system prefs and looked at the network settings under built-in ethernet tab. Under TCP-IP I found the IP address of my network host.
-In the Printer Setup Utility I tried to manually add the 16/600 PS printer. In the Printer Browser window, I selected IP Printer.
-Under IP printer, I selected LPD Protocol. I inserted the IP address copied from my network settings (above) in the address bar. In the Queue bar I typed in the name of the printer 'Apple LaserWriter 16/600 PS'.
-Again in the Printer Browser box I gave the printer a name and location. Finally, in the 'print using' box I selected Apple and then chose the model from the drop down list. 'Apple LaserWriter 16/600 PS fax v.2014.016'
-I got a dialogue box that asked about other installable features - clicked ok.
-when I tried to print a Word document, the Apple LaserWriter driver opened up and appeared in my dock and then I got an immediate error saying "network host ---.---.--.--- is busy, down, or unreachable..."
-I tried to repair permissions, but it did not resolve my issue.
-I noticed that even after adding the 16/600, it did not show up as a bonjour printer, but remained visible as a printer in my list (although grayed out).
I did some troubleshooting and the best I could find as a close match for my problem was that perhaps I had entered the name incorrectly in the Queue box...? If anyone knows how to find the appropriate name to insert I would sure appreciate knowing.
Finally - you should probably know that I received this printer from someone else. I guess I'm wondering if I need to be resetting network settings on the printer somehow? The test page lists the following:
    Ethernet (Address: 08:00:07:84:78:e9)
    EtherTalk: PostScript
    NetWare: AutoSelect
    TCP/IP: AutoSelect
    IP address: 0.0.0.0
And - now finally, to answer your questions (the best I can, that is)
I did connect the yellow network cable directly into my laptop (right side, 4th input, counting away from me). I have a portable internet modem that plugs into my wall (for power) and then has a cable (Ethernet?) that goes into my Airport Express (LAN port?). I have no other router and there are no other inputs or outputs on my modem. My Airport Express has only one input for the modem, one mini input for airtunes, and one usb input (in which I have a cable connecting to my other laser printer (now working wirelessly via Airport Express!!)
Should I have these cables hooked up differently?
What is a Phonenet adaptor? My internet is provided via a cable service (not DSL). It is wireless and portable - I can take it to any major city in Canada and it works as long as it is plugged into a power source and near a window.
I really appreciate any help you can offer. At this point I must have spent the better part of almost two weeks trying to get these older laser printers up and running.
    Thank you again.

  • Wireless Modem and Airport Express USB Printer

I am already connected to the internet via a wireless modem provided by my ISP. The connection uses Airport. I just purchased an Airport Express to connect my computer to a printer through the USB port. However, I can't get the airport utility to connect to the Airport Express solely for the purpose of connecting to the printer. I have tried to make the new aiport express both a new network and part of an existing wireless network with no sucess. I sitll have a flashing yellow light on my Airport Express. I have not connected the wireless modem to the Airport Express. Do I have to connect the airport express to the modem? Help!

    Hi Andrew Otis:
    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
You'll need to configure your AE via the Airport Admin Utility to Join an Existing Wireless Network, then select the name of your network in the drop down box or enter it EXACTLY as the SSID is broadcasting your network Name. You may also have to configure wireless security if you wireless modem has that enabled.
    I hope this helps!

  • Connect airport express (my printer) to a new broadband setup (Wi Fi)

We just dropped our DSL and got broadband through our cable company. Motorola is now the WiFi in our house but Airport Express is used for our printer (making it a wireless printer). The old set up for the printer used a household network called Apple network a88211. If I switch from the motorola to the Apple Network, I can get the printer to work wirelessly. Can I get Motorola to read the Apple Network a88211 in my home?

If the Motorola device you speak of is simply a cable modem, then you should configure the AirPort Express device to connect to the Internet using Ethernet and DHCP. Once you have made the connection, everything should work as before, although you may need to set up the printer share anew.
Be sure to power-cycle the cable modem before connecting the AirPort Express device.
If the Motorola device is a wireless router as well as a cable modem, then you probably need to configure everything differently.

  • Airport Express Wireless Printing from Windows 8

I'm in the process of configuring a new laptop that came with Windows 8.  I want to be able to print wirelessly to an HP PSC 1315 printer connected to an Airport Express, which I had been doing successflly from an XP Pro machine that just died.  I am able to: (1) print wirelessly to the printer from a new MacBook Air (so wireless printing does work); (2) connect the Win8 machine to the internet via the Airport Express network (so the wireless network connection is OK); and (3) print from the Win8 machine to the printer when it's directly connected to a USB port (so the printer drivers are OK).  I have installed Bonjour 2.0.2 on the Win8 machine, but it's not seeing any printers.  I've also installed the Airport Utility (both 5.5.3.2 and 5.6.1.2) on the Win8 machine, but it's not finding any Airport wireless devices either.
    I'd appreciate any help.
    Steve
P.S.  Incidentally, I can't install a viable Airport Utilty (AU) on the Air since the versions that will work with my older AEs (5.5.3 and 5.6.1.2) won't install on the Air.  The Air will only install 6.1, which won't talk to my older AEs.  Apple suggested I install 5.x on another Mac and then port it to the Air via a stick.  But I don't have another Mac.  Grrr.

Unfortunately, connecting your printer to the AirPort Express does not make it AirPrint compatible. You need to have a specific AirPrint compatible printer to be able to print directly to the printer using your iPad.
Check this Apple support document for more details on AirPrint.

  • Airport Express with printer & hard drive with Time Machine

I have a MacBook that I'd like to backup its data. Concerned about the following (in level of concern from highest to lowest): theft, crash, fire.
I currently have an Airport Express with a Brother printer attached to it that my PC and MacBook print to.
I am really in a dilemma as to what to do. I was looking into Carbonite to get an offsite backup location of my data. (I figured offsite would cover all concerns of losing data due to theft, fire, or just a crash) However, Carbonite does not hold onto data you delete (ie, my photos and videos will fill up my hard drive eventually and I'd like to just archive them in one central spot when I am done accessing them on a regular basis-- ie delete them off my MacBook hard drive). That is like $55/year to do Carbonite... but, the only thing that will help me with over a hard drive in my house is a fire (and theft if a burglar were to find where my backup drive was in the house).-- Of course, I'd probably want a different location for my hard drive for that reason -- so, I'd have to buy another airport or just a time machine that has the wifi built in.
I've read lots of issues with the Western Digital trying to download programs onto your computer... I have one for my PC that I backed up photos manually and it did try to install programs when I attached it to my PC... not so much my Mac when I took some photos off it. I looked into getting another portable hard drive at Costco for my Mac, but realized that it would require reformatting to use on my Mac (as it was built for a PC).... something I wasn't sure if I was computer-savvy enough to do or if I did do it, would I end up with issues later on?
Anyhow... in the end, what do you all do to backup your data, especially photos and videos? Do you have smaller hard drives that you back up to and then when full move them to an offsite location? Can you have more than one "hard drive" backing up..... I was thinking it would be nice to have one larger hard drive that would potentially hold all my photos and videos so I can access anytime, but then have smaller drives of the same data that I can take to a safe deposit box and use as my super secure backup (no fire, no theft, no crash).
btw, When doing time machine, does it keep all the metadata with each photo?
Burning CD's is time consuming.... and, I have heard there are different qualities of disks out there... archival v. not... how long do the archival last v. the non-archival... or is that more of an issue for future generations not being able to access our photos?

You need to remember that the Time Capsule is both a wireless router and a hard drive all in one enclosure. If you don't need a wireless router, around $150 of the $300 for a Time Capsule is going to be in the router portion of the device.
The nice thing about the Time Capsule is that it is a network drive. All Macs running Leopard or Snow Leopard will be able to back up automatically to a single device. The first generation of Time Capsules about two years ago had some power supply problems that affected some users. Apple announced a program for these users to replace their Time Capsules.
So, it depends on your requirements. If you are looking for a new, dual band wireless router and want to backup your Macs running Leopard or Snow Leopard automatically using ethernet or wireless, the Time Capsule is a logical choice.
If you don't need a new router, then you'll need to look at a separate hard drive that will be attached directly to the computer using the USB or FireWire port. If you have two Macs, you'll have to get two hard drives if you want to do Time Machine backups correctly.
Most hard drives can be reformatted to work with Mac if you don't mind a few extra steps and Disk Utility (Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility) does not look too complicated for you.

  • AirPort Express connected printer only prints in black and white

I have a HP Deskjet D4160 connected to my Apple AirPort Express wireless base station. Wireless printing from my Macintosh works just fine, except for the fact that the printer will only print in black and white when connected wirelessly. If I disconnect the printer and connect it through USB, it prints just fine in color.
This printer has never printed in color when connected wirelessly. All my software is up to date as far as the Mac and the HP drivers go. PLEASE HELP!
I know I'm not the only one experiencing this problem. A quick Google search will bring up hundreds of thousands of others experiencing the same problem I am.

I tried turning the printer on when it only said 35% but it still printed out in black and white. It hung at 35% after about 3 minutes so I don't think I could have waited it to get to 100%. Usually print jobs get in the queue in a matter of seconds so I don't think the workaround is working for me.
