AirPort Express PPPoE: connection uptime in the bar. How to change?
hi all,
I've just set up a PPPoE connection with my Airport Express, and now I can see connection uptime showing in the bar next to the signal strength. How to hide that counting as it's sooo annoying, but keep the signal icon in the bar?

Trying to connect my xbox to the airport express. Have wireless in home and do not have a ethernet point behind tv/xbox. How do I configure the airport express to connect to my wireless network and then the airport express can use its connection via ethernet to connect the xbox to the internet.
Is your AirPort Express Base Station (AX) a 802.11n model? If it is, you can reconfigure it as a wireless Ethernet bridge or ProxySTA. This would allow the AX to join another wireless network and have its Ethernet port enabled for wired clients, like the Xbox 360.
To activate ProxySTA, you must set up the Express to join a wireless network and then enable the Allow Ethernet Clients setting; both settings are located in the Wireless tab of AirPort Utility. -
I can't print wirelessly using Airport Express. I have my HP printer connected to a USB hub, and the hub to the Airport Express, but when I select the HP from the printer list, my MacBook says the printer is "off-line" - even when it is not. I've tried several USB connectors, and several different ports on my USB hub; same result. I need to have the HP connected to the hub 'cause from there it's connected to our desktop Mac.

Can I use an Airport Express to connect wireless to a Linksys Wireless Router, such that I can then use the Ethernet ports on the Airport to either connected to a PC wired, or even use a hub off the Airport Express to allow multiple wired connections to it?
I am not looking to have the Airport Express extend my wireless network, just connect to it and provide me wired connections in a different location from where my Linksys Route is located. Would prefer to replace Linksys with all Apple, but just not possible financially yet. I can print from my macbook pro using airport express usb connected printer, however my iPad and iphone are looking for an airprint printer. Can I direct the iPad/iphone to the usb connected printer. Macbook iphone and iPad confirm a wifi connection through the airport express.
You will need to install an App like Print Central on the iPad to try to print to the printer. It will allow you to print to most printers. Check with their support folks if you need more info.

Installed latest version of iTunes, now I cannot play music through my Airport Express. I'm seeing the message "An error occurred while connecting to the AirPlay device "living room". I currently have an Airport Extreme Base Station connected to my DSL router by Ethernet. Because I have a long, sprawling home, I have 3 Airport Expresses configured to "Extend the Wireless Network" I've established. Because of my home environment--thick walls encompassaing wire mesh, sprawling rooms, etc., it is hard to maintain a continuously-strong, stable WiFi signal. I've been told that I can create a much more stable network by connecting the Express units to the AEBS via Ethernet cable. Since my home is already wired for Ethernet, I'm considering making this change. If I proceed to establish the Ethernet connections, how do I then set up Airport Utility to accomodate this switch from a Wireless-based WiFi network to an Ethernet-based WiFi network?

PhyllisI don't see anyplace in the Utility to designate HOW the Express units are connected, only how they relate on the network to the Extreme,
As I mentioned in the previous post, when you click the Internet icon in AirPort Utility:
Connect Using = Ethernet (This tells each Express to connect to the Extreme using the ethernet connection)
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode) (This setting allows your AirPort Extreme to function as the "main" router on the network, as it must for the setup to work correctly.
You do not need to configure anything differently on the AirPort Extreme (as long as it is working correctly now) to connect the AirPort Express devices.
The only other question I have is the following: I'm currently already using one of the Ethernet ports on the back of the Extreme-- for my husband's iMac. I really don't think he gains much in performance over how the iMac would run through wifi, so I could disconnect the iMac. If you think the iMac would do better to stay on the Ethernet connection, should I use a switch/splitter to add an extra connection?
Since each AirPort Express must connect using ethernet, you will need to use the 3 LAN <-> ports on the AirPort Extreme for the AirPort Express devices.
I would suggest that you try connecting the iMac using wireless to see if that will work. If the wireless connection is not satisfactory, then you can add a 5 port ethernet switch to one of the LAN ports on the Extreme and then plug all the devices connecting using ethernet....the iMac and the 3 AirPort Express devices...into the remaining 4 ports on the switch. That will leave you with 2 open ports on the AirPort Extreme for any future devices that may need to connect.
When you test out the system, here is a trick to find out which device your computer is actually connecting to at any given time as it "roams" around the house.
When you have AirPort Utility open to configure each AirPort Express, jot down the AirPort ID for each Express. You can do the same for the AirPort Extreme.
As you move around with your laptop, hold down the option key on your Mac keyboard while you click on the fan shaped AirPort icon at the top of the screen. Look for the BSSID. That is the AirPort ID of the device that the laptop is connected to at that time. it should also be the ID of the closest AirPort Express (or AirPort Extreme if the laptop is close to the Extreme at the time).
Let us know how things are working when everything is up and running. -
Do I connect my airport express to my modem via the WAN port and then connect from airport express to my imac with ethernet cable? Is that how you "hard wire" the connection? Because when I do that, I still can't get online. Thanks.
What is the make & model of your modem?
You pretty much stated the correct wiring. There should be an Ethernet cable connected between the modem and the WAN (circle of dots) port on the AirPort Express base station.

I believe that it is in AirPort Express, and would have to clean it. How do you do that?You need to use the Express in router mode.. I think you are trying to use it in bridge mode.. but you need to give us a lot more details.. screenshots might help more than anything.

Recently moved and installed ATT DLS - I use their wireless router and connectted my airport express - Now I'm getting the Blue ? on some images - and at times - videos don't load. I've increased / deleted Cache. Suggestions? Misconfig? Could it be possible my configuration from MacBook to router isn't correct?

Couple of questions. I found an apple support document on this topic that opened with this line:
"AirPort Express and all AirPort Extreme base stations can use WDS. Earlier AirPort base stations can't."
If the TC is an airport extreme base station, why can't this work to extend the network? I think I misunderstand. Here is the full article:

If I buy a new airport extreme, set it to wireless-n only as my main router, am I correct that my existing time capsule could be used as a bridge if plugged in upstairs?
Final question (and that should do it), could I take this old airport express, plug it in upstairs using the ethernet connection, and just create a separate wireless network to use with a different name?
I'd like to keep one network if possible but just kicking around short term solutions.

Lost airport express output connection from ipad
MY I pad had three output options which one could select affter a double click on the button on the right of the screen
1) Ipad 2) airport express 3) Apple TV : the airport express option has disappeared .. Open WiFi Explorer and look for the SNR heading.
SNR is signal-to-noise ratio, which is a good way to analyze connection quality. The 'bars" at the top of the Macs screen are there pretty much for show...and they tell you nothing about the noise that may be present in the signal.
Use the following SNR guide to analyze the quality of your connection at the location of the Express:
40+ Superior
35 Excellent
30 Very Good
25 Good
20 Fair
15 Low
10 Very Low
5 Not useable
A reading somewhere between 25-30 should provide a reliable connection for the Express to "extend". Things fall off quickly below 25 though, so if you see anything below that value, that indicates either too low of a signal or too much noise on the connection.
The Express can only "extend" the quality of signal that it receives, so a good SNR is critical to reliable performance. -
Can my Airport Express be used to extend the signal for an iPad2
I am using a Linksys wired router as the beginning of my home network. There is an ethernet cable running from it through a wall to the Xbox 360 and an Airport Express serving as the base for the wireless network. I have an iBook on the other side of the wall and about 10 feet and an iMac about 20 feet with one wall in between. These two have some fluctuation in their signal but only between 4 bars and 3. I just got an iPad 2 and it is causing me grief because it struggles to maintain a connection just another 10 feet from the iBook. If I put it next to the iMac when it has full 4 bars the iPad gets maybe 2. The iPad has full bars if next to the router. That kind of defeats the purpose of buying an iPad. So, my question is how to rearrange the network so the iPad is happy in the living room where I mostly use it. I had considered moving the iMac and using it as a base station to free the Airport Express for other duty but where I want to move it is further away from the living room. Right now the Airport is wired to the router. Is this necessary for it to be a part of the network? I know I can use it to get music from iTunes to speakers but would that placement also work as a wireless extender? Would just buying another router for the Xbox location and putting the Airport there also be a better solution?
ladybastet, let's clean up some terminology. You should designate only one router for your network. At present that is the Linksys. Your wireless access point is the Express, and it gets its network connection from the Linksys. Is that correct?

Now that you know your Linksys is the router, is the above correct? Unless the Linksys is also a wireless access point, the iPad's proximity to it will not matter. Only its proximity to the device creating the wireless network is a factor. In your case, I believe that is the Express.

Using the iMac to share a wired Ethernet connection to create its own wireless network is certainly possible, but it is less than ideal. For one, the iMac would have to be powered on all the time.
You do not need or want another router.
It is impossible for me to be certain of your network environment (meaning, the size and configuration of your home, the proximity of competing wireless networks, the number of network devices, and the potential for interference) but you might be better off replacing the wired Linksys router with an AirPort Extreme. That would give you the ability to create a "roaming network" or to use your Express to extend the Extreme's wireless network. I think this would be the easiest solution, but given the uncertainly of your description this expense may not be necessary.
Much of my confusion stems from your original question: "Can my Airport Express be used to extend the signal for an iPad2" - the quick answer is yes, but a prerequisite question is, "what signal?" The only "signal" I can determine that may be relevant is the one created by the Express. Once we have the terminology fixed, perhaps we can fix what's wrong with your network.
