Airport Express range

Last night I unplugged my Linksys 802.11g and plugged in my new shiny white Airport Express 802.11n. While I was expecting a much faster experience I ended up disappointed in the range of the Airport Express. I suppose I should have done more research but is this common while using the Express as the sole wireless router?
Thanks for any feedback.

What band did you configure the Express to use? The 5 GHz band may have faster throughput, but at the expense of shorter range. Try configuring it to use the 2.4 GHz band and see if that gives you better range. Two other things you can try with the 5 GHz band are (a) using one of the higher channels (149-161). In some countries that allows much higher signal strength. (b) In AirPort Utility's AirPort panel Wireless tab, click the button for "Wireless Network Options" and check "Use wide channels".

  • Why is Airport Express range so CRAPPY

Hi, I'm a big fan of Apple products, except for Airport Express. The reason? The range is appalling. I cannot get it to function at a distance of more than six feet!! I have tried changing the channel settings, but to no avail. It can't be the house as I have a wireless indoor outdoor weather monitor($30) and that quite happily monitors 30-40 feet away. Any suggestions as my wireless music/internet is confined to 5 feet away, they might as well be plugged directly in to the computer!!
    Any help would be great

If your computer has a removable wi-fi card (some are integrated) the
antenna cable may not be fully seated into the card's socket.
If the wireless question gets too intense, you may have to see what
a different wireless base station can do for you; should you have a
need to test both the computer's wireless airport capabilities as well
as those of the base station. To use another wireless capable Mac
or PC locally to see what response that gives you may be helpful in
troubleshooting more than just the AirPort Express.
I see Apple certified page has AEBS [extreme base with b.i. modem
and external antenna port] for only $10. more than the Express base.
With another wi-fi capable computer to check your AX output,
or take the AX unit to another location where it can be tested,
may be helpful in further testings. It may be on its way out.
Oh, did your wireless signal appear to act up after you did some
software update or another? Some user's computers did act up
a bit after some updates; mine both appear to work fine wireless.

  • Can the airport express range be limited

I am getting ready to go off to college, and I know I'm going to get a power book. I want to get an airport express to use in my dorm because the school doesn't have wireless internet. However, wireless routers are not allowed on campus because of security issues. I know about mac filtering, and I'm definitely going to use it. What I really want to know is, can the signal strength of an airport express base station be turned down so the signal won't reach too far past my dorm room. I know most people are trying to extend the range, but I need exactly the opposite. thanks-james

You can lower the transmitter power of the AirPort Extreme and Express base stations, which effectively lowers the range. The following article tells you how:

  • What's the AirPort Express range/coverage?

I need a new router because my home's pretty big. I'm not sure if AirPort Express will give me enough coverage or whether I need to buy the AirPort Extreme.

There are a number of factors that need to be taken into account when discussing a router's Wi-Fi range. The most critical is Wi-Fi interference. This interference can come in many forms that include building material, distance between the router and the client, other Wi-Fis operating nearby, microwave ovens, etc. Another is antenna design for BOTH the router and the wireless client.
In practice I find that the 2nd generation 802.11n AirPort Express base station provides a useable range of approximately 150'. Best bandwidth performance is within 50'. The AirPort Extreme is slightly better than this.

  • Airport Express & Range Extension

Currently, I have one airport express connected to a window xp server via lan port. The ADSL is connected to the PC. all working fine with my PB 4.
I wish to extend the range of the wireless by using another airport express hardware ( which i have bought).
Two choices are available ,i suppose:
    1. install the second Aiportexpress ( as range extender )on the PC . ( is that correct assumption?)( how many extenders one can have? )
    2. Purchase a wireless router with ( or without built in ADSL) and use the 2 airport express as range extenders. If this configuration is feasable, which hardware would be compatble with my 2 airport express .? Belkin? D-Link? netGear? please advise on Model too

  • Airport express range problems

First of all hello to everybody, i'm an italian mac user (so excuse my english). In my house i have a dsl connection with a us robotics g wifi old router. I continue to use this router because after a lot of trying i realized that this is the only one that can reach most of the rooms. A couple of days ago i decided to buy an airport extreme sure that it could cover in the same way the house but unfortunately the signal lack a lot so i had to leave the wifi signal of the router on. The thing is that i wanted to buy an airport express too to stream the music, now the question are: how can i boost the signal? have i to try to change the channels? It is better to use the extreme as bridge?

Just an add.....the question about the bridge mode is because on the extreme i have a "double nat" problem.

  • Connectivity Issues Between my AirPort Express and Dell Inspiron

I have an Airport Extreme set up in my home office, and then two AirPort Expresses set up around the house, but if my Dell Inspiron is anywhere in the building other than in the home office room it will barely connect to the network. My Macbook pro has no issues roaming about the house, but for some reason the dell does, even if it is parked right next to one of the airport express range extenders... Any thoughts?

    ". . . but a WIFI signal is a WIFI signal right?"
I think so, but what do I know. I also saw where another person suggested checking the "Linksys WPA" settings. Might work, but I have absolutely no idea what they are or where I'd find them (although I did write and ask). Here's a link to that thread, maybe it will help:

  • How to set-up new Airport Express to extend range of Airport Extreme

Purchased a new Airport Express to use it as a range extender on existing home network with an operating Airport Extreme base station. While I've read instructions, I'm unclear whether the Express needs to be connected by ethernet cable for its initial setup, or can I simply plug it and initialize it wirelessly onto the same household network? (I've tried the latter but without success).

    to edex67 and Bob Timmons:
My objective is to extend the wireless range of the Airport Extreme base station wirelessly - so I do appreciate that the Airport Express would needsto be located haflway between the base station and the "dead zone" area.
The suggestion of using a Powerline ethernet connection to the Airport Express has merit (especially as I have one available).
I continue to use OSX 10.6.8 - does this affect my set-up in any way?
My problem had been - and remains - how to configure the Airport Express in range extend mode - I did click these boxes on both the Extreme base station and the Express, however the Express still has flashing amber lights and error codes - one indicating no internet availability on the Airport Express.

  • How do I use my airport express to extend the wireless range of my NETGEAR 7550?

I am trying to extend the range of my Netgear 7550 using the airport express.  When trying to set up the airport express it said that I was unable to extend the Netgear.  Any ideas how to make it work?

  • Do I need a cable connecting my Time Capsule to Airport Express if I want to use the AE to extend my wifi network range?

I'm a bit confused by conflicting advice given by my local Apple shop and my internet provider.
My cable modem is plugged into a Time Capsule which I use to access the net wirelessly almost all over the house.  The one spot the wireless doesn't quite reach is (of course) where I now need my office and iMac to be.
I thought I could just plug in an Airport Express somewhere in the middle  to extend the network's range but the guy at my local Apple shop said the Airport Express would need to be connected not just to power but to the Time Capsule, via a cable.  That's fiddly and would involve cables running under the floor or along walls and ceilings, not something I can or really want to do.  It's not really practical to try and move the cable connection point either.
My internet provider suggested a netgear wireless extender and said that would only need to be plugged into power.  The reviews of the netgear product I found comparing it to Airport Express suggest that the Express doesn't need to be connected to anything other than power either to extend a network range (which was what I originally thought).
So I'm wondering which advice is correct? I've also read that the netgear product isn't all that easy to set up so I'd rather stick with.   Apple if it will do what I want.
Thanks for any help out there

I'm sure that the guy at the Apple shop means well, but he is not correct.
While it would be preferable to connect the Time Capsule and AirPort Express using a wired Ethernet connection, the Express can connect wirelessly and extend the wireless signal the same way....IF...it is located where it can receive a good wireless signal.

  • How do I add an Airport Express to extend the range of my WIFI network with my iMac as a base station?

    Hi people
I need help to configure a new Airport Express only to extend the range of my WIFI network.
My ethernet cable from modem is connected directly in my iMac and I am sharing the internet by WIFI inside home very fine.
Now, I would like connect my devices on my garden on backyard.
I can't move my iMac from their place and i just want add a Airport Express between the iMac and backyard to extend the range of WIFI.
But I can't to configure to that. On Airport Utility appear the Airport Express connected directly to internet globe, but don't work.
So, what can I do? What is wrong?
    Thanks all and best regards.
    Carlos Sgrillo, from Brazil.

The AirPort cannot do what you ask.
The Airport needs to connect to a modem, or another router......not to a computer.
The Express can only extend a wireless signal that has been provided by another Apple router.

  • How do I setup Airport Express to extend my CISCO router's wifi range?

    Hi,
I am using CISCO EA4500 router for internet connection via wifi. I have Airport Express with me, which I want to use as extender of the wifi network. I setup the Airport Express as "Extend the wireless network", provided same base station name (CISCO), network name (JKS) and passwords.
However, I am not able to get it to work. Its gives me error saying network: unknown.
I have just 1 BHK flat, and even then the range is not enough to reach from my DR to BR. I tried using Airport Express as the base station as well. But the problem is again the range.
    Help me please.
    Jayesh

Can I do it other way around? I mean setup Airport as Base station and use Cisco to extend the wireless network?
I doubt that the Cisco router would be able to to wirelessly extend the AirPort network, since Apple uses proprietary settings that are designed to work with other Apple routers.
Also, when I am trying to use just Airport, I am not able to connect multiple devices at the same time
Sorry, but I don't know whether you have the AirPort connected to the Cisco router using an Ethernet cable....or.....whether you are saying that you have the AirPort connected directly to your modem using an Ethernet cable.
If the AirPort is connected directly to your modem.....what is the make and model number of this device?
Since you know that the Cisco router is working OK when you have it connected to your modem, things would be much simpler if you connect the AirPort to the Cisco router using an Ethernet cable.  Can you do this?
