Airport Express Really Nagging

Previous Nag:I have posted this AE speed problem before with no responses. Have an AE set up as a wireless access point on an ethernet network. [Router:8 port switch] to a distribution switch to AE. WAP2 128k. Know the connection is valid, RF 2-4 bars and can do email and iTunes at <100 kbps. Pinged my own router and have a 30% packet loss, to Googleup to 90% packet loss. Hard wired path to the same ports works fine, speed is up and no packet loss. So my question remains: waz up? (Is it time to sent the thing to Asian recycle and extract the precious metals?) cedar

Hi cedarmtn,
It seems you really know your away around Airport
Express and Wireless signals. but this could be
silly but could it be interference?
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58543
Also, I have changed my Airport Express to Channel
6
hope this helps..
So I tried changing channels to 1, 6, and 10. No go. I live in the boondocks so there are no neighbors around with errant networks, no phones on, no microwaves... But, there is one source I haven't considered: my ISP is radio linked from a repeater 1500 feet away on a hill above my ranch to my modem. It is a very robust connection, almost never goes down. Probably lots of juice. I wonder if it is on the same 2.4 GHz band. If it is spread spectrum, and it is 128 bit wap2, it may spill over. I need to sniff around here to see if I am even close. Thanx for the suggestions.

  • Does Airport Express really communicate the same speed to both Mac and non-Mac devices?

Okay, so to fully understand my situation, here's a briefing: Our old Netgear router was not pushing nearly the speeds we were paying for (we pay for 30 and were getting 10-15 max, usually much less). I recently got an iMac which means that all of my devices are now Apple made, so I decided to get an Airport Express to hopefully improve our wireless speeds. I set it up with the modem going in the WAN port and the old router attached to the LAN port so that it could still act as an ethernet hub for the few hard-wired devices knocking around. I set up both a network and a guest network, with our original one still active through the Netgear router.
I get 45 Mbps from the new network on my iMac, but my roommate is only getting around 9. If he connects to the old one, he caps out at about 25. Is the wireless card in his PC just not capable of receiving more than that? He insists that since it's an Apple router it is not as compatable with non-Apple products. Interestingly, I get faster speeds on my iPhone from the guest network than I can from either the new or old main networks in our house.
I know this is a really long question, but has anyone had this same problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Also: isn't the wireless speed of the old Netgear router still basically being pushed through the Airport Express, as it's the only thing connected directly to the modem? Are there any settings I can change to make everything run smoothly? If the PC, Android phones, etc can connect to the new network at the same speed as my Apple products, then we can eliminate the old network altogether if that will help.

I think I answered my own question. I found this on the web:
    http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/index.htm?fat32format.htm
Seems to suggest that using this third party exe to format it instead of windows inbuilt one will allow for partitions greater than 32GB. So this looks the way to go. And the 2GB limit per file is just for FAT16 not FAT32 apparently, but even if it is I only have a few iso/video files bigger than 2 gig so will just use a splitter on them.
Hope this is useful to someone else

  • Airport Express REALLY stopped working

My Airport Express has really stopped working: dead as a dodo, defunct, etc. It doesn't show in Airport Admin Utility or in iTunes, and the front light is also dead. I have tried changing the easy-access fuse but it makes no difference.
I assume it has rather annoyingly just died, but why or how I do not know. Is there anything else I can try or do? Is it worth having it repaired, given the relatively low cost?

Apple has already killed the main thread about this topic months ago, and have left isolated thread to develop a bit before sometimes deleting them: http://www.hardmac.com/news/2006-08-25/#5851
anyway, our curretn investigations show that APX with serial starting with HS4xx or HS5xx or even HS6xx are mostly affected by the sudden death syndroma.
other APX series manufacture with a serial starting with 6F are much much less prone to die after the end of the warranty.

  • Connecting via Airport express: really annoying problem

I've got a really annoying problem that doesn't make much sense. Have an airport express and my network seems to work OK mostly. My iBook can always connect, never any problem. My eMac however is behaving bizzarely. The longer I'm connected, the worse my connection gets. Until it stops working altogether and I can't access the internet at all. System preferences tells me the Airport card is on, but is not connected to a network. Can still connect to it with the iBook.
Shut down, leave it a good while (a good while too, a short shut down doesn't do it), and it works again.
I can't even think where to start looking, all I can think of is that I have a problem with the Airport card in the eMac (something getting hot in there perhaps). Any ideas?

    Thanks,
I'm pretty sure the card is seated properly (it works most of the time after all). I couldn't get it to work when I installed it because it wasn't seated properly, I pushed it in as far as it could possibly go and it has worked since (except after extended periods of use). The Airport express is three feet from the eMac with only a couple of bits of wood between them. The connection does not go down at times which I can link with the use of any particular appliances (When the eMac stops working, the iBook is always fine, even in a similar position). It is the apparently time-dependent aspect that I can't figure out (I only notice it on those, fairly infrequent, occasions when I am online for a few hours at a time). The eMac discussion group is a good tip. Ta.

  • Is there any proof that Airport Express really extends a network?

I've been using various Airport Express devices since their inception, always on extended Extreme networks. Yet I've never been able to demonstrate with any certainty that the network is genuinely extended. I seem to get the same range with or without Express plugged in. Has anyone seen any objective evidence, any third party test, proving that Express really extends a network?
At this point I have an Express about 50 feet from the base in a frame house: no brick or concrete between. I get maximum bars in the room with Express, whether or not it is plugged in, and there is often considerable delay in web page loading, whether or not Express is plugged in. The device doesn't improve things appreciably.

Two quick things to check using AirPort Utility on both devices:
    On your "main" base station
Open AirPort Utility - click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab/label located just below the row of icons
There must be a check mark next to "Allow this network to be extended"
Click Update to save your changes.
If you don't see this option, you likely have an older AirPort Extreme that does not support the "extend" feature. Please clarify on the version that you have
    On your AirPort Express
Open AirPort Utility - click Manual Setup
    Click the Wireless tab
Wireless Mode = Extend a wireless network
Wireless Name = Same name as your main network
Check mark next to "Allow wireless clients"
Wireless Security = Same setting as your main router
Wireless Password = Same password as your main network
    Confirm Password
    Click Update to save settings
If you do not see the "Extend a wireless network setting", you may have an older AirPort Express, or if you are sure that you have a newer 802.11n model, try holding down the option key while you click on the selection box to see if the "Extend" setting will appear.
Assuming no major obstructions between the main router and area that needs more wireless coverage, a good starting location for the Express would be a point that is approximately half the distance between the main router and the area that needs more coverage.
As I said, this feature works very well if major obstructions do not come into play.

  • Airport Express really slow internet

Hi I have a Airport Express plugged into a ADSL modem, everything has been fabulous. However recently I have noticed a lag in loading pages and a general sluggish behavior. Initially I thought it was the connections however through a process of elimination I have located it as a Airport Express problem.
I have reset it hard, soft & factory it is recognised by my Macbook ok but and my printer works fine however the internet continues to lag and sometimes drops off completley.
Any ideas? Or do things like this just go kaput after a year?

I've had mine for five years and, other than the initial setup, it has been a real workhorse. Try changing the channel on your AX to 11 as you might be getting interference from your neighbours.

  • Windows Vista and Airport Express

I can connect my Airport Express to my wireless router via an ethernet cable and get up the configuration page - easy!
    Now for the difficult bit!
I cannot get Airport Admin Utility to recognise the Airport Express (base station in Apple Speak!) when I disconnect from the router.
Airport Express really sounds a great way to connect ITUNES to remote speakers etc but it is necessary to get it working with Windows Vista and get the wireless function working.Anybody sucessfully done it? Please only respond if you have managed to do this personally!

William - I am in a similar place.... I have an airport express running as an extension to my home wireless network. I have a TC that I use as my router. My macs can connect to my network (of course) but the windows vista laptop (sony vaio) does not...... HELP! Have you been able to get any answers??

  • Printer recommendations for airport express

    Hi all,
I posted a question regarding printer compatibility with airport express. I already bought two and both were glitchy. I am trialing a canon s520 with the view of buying the new model. I put up a post, and got a lot of answers. Unfortunately some say one thing and some say the other. I have noticed that when there is a serious issue with apple equipment, the answers become garbled like this. BTW the s520 hangs a lot. So canon is out. Best advice i got from a couple of posts was dont both with wireless printing via AE. Buy a printer with its own wireless set up.
Dont get me wrong, i love the discussion groups and the advice i get.
    My question is this..
Does airport express really work PROPERLY for wireless printing. I thought is was great feature. Would love to continue using it. But since tiger, i seem to have had a lot of time wasting problems. Is apple losing it... And surely they must have a list of recommended printers to work with AE.

    My question is this..
Does airport express really work PROPERLY for
    wireless printing.
Yes I have managed to get various printers working PROPERLY with my Airport base stations.
And surely they must have a list
of recommended printers to work with AE.
    There is the unofficial list.
The iFelix unofficial Airport Extreme and Airport Express Printer Compatibility List
    http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/1013.html
This is an unofficial list of USB printers which are are compatible with the AirPort Extreme Base Station and Airport Express. Printers in bold have been added to the original list that Apple provided. Printers in dark red are in fact the only printers I have personally tested.
Please also note that due to changes in the firmware of both the Airport Extreme base station and the introduction of the Airport Express some printers which are in this list may no longer in fact be compatible.

  • AirPort Express "boosting" wifi range

I am going to be using an AX to stream music from my office to the living room home stereo. I am not intending to use it as a wireless router because I already have a linksys I am happy with. So, without an ethernet cable plugged into the AX, will it "boost" the wifi signal at all? Or just put the streaming music to the stereo and have no effect on the wifi signal itself.

While the Airport Express can be used to extend the range of some wireless networks using WDS, it requires a third party firmware for your Linksys router, and the antenna on the Airport Express really isn't that great.
I'd look at higher power antennas for your existing base station. I don't know where to suggest you look, as all my suppliers are Australian. You're looking for something with an RP-TNC connection.

  • Airport Express as Repeate doesnt work

Hello. I have a TIme Capsule an older modell with 1GB Harddisk and Wifi function.
The Time Capsule is in an other house circa 8 meter next to me. In my house i have in Airport Express MB321Z/A that i will use as a repeater. I had done this configuration.
The LED of the Airport Express is green, aber 1 Meter next to the Airport Express the Signal is very weak. I dont really know if the Airport Express really works as repeater.
A time capsule 8 meter next to me trough two walls an one roof is that to much?? The Airport Express LED shines green but i think the signal is not better.
    What is the problem??

A time capsule 8 meter next to me trough two walls an one roof is that to much??
Each intervening obstruction will attenuate wireless signals a certain amount.
Try relocating the Express closer to the Time Capsule. The wireless information it is capable of repeating is only as good as the quality of signal it can receive.

  • Can I extend my Sky wireless signal with an AirPort Express?

    Hi,
I recently got an AirPort Express in the hope that I would be able to extend my wireless signal to areas that currently have a weak and unreliable signal from my Sky SR101 router.  I am currently able to do this with an old Belkin 'Wireless G Universal Range Extender' but it is not ideal - it's quite temperamental, it has to be reset from time to time and it also provides pretty low speeds.  I've tried configuring the basics for the AirPort Express but can't seem to get it to work.  I've seen on the forums that some people think it is impossible to extend a non-Apple base station's signal with an AirPort Express while others have managed to get it to work.  I would suspect that if I am able to do it with an outdated Belkin range extender I should be able to with a brand new AirPort Express - I don't know!
    Very grateful for any thoughts/comments/solutions.
    Thanks for reading.

Perhaps have one connected to the Sky router with an Ethernet cable and then boost the signal from that one with the other?  Would that work?
If the 1st Gen AirPort Express really is a 1st Gen, then yes, you could do this.
Check on the side of the AirPort Express for the model number.....hard to see in the faint print.....so you may need a magnifying glass.
A 1st Gen AirPort Express is model number A1264.

  • Is there a way to turn the wireless capabilities off on an AirPort Express?  I have an AirPort Extreme as my main router and use the express to just extend it. I only really want to you use the express for hard ethernet connections

Is there a way to turn the wireless capabilities off on an AirPort Express?  I have an AirPort Extreme as my main router and use the express to just extend it. I only really want to you use the express for hard ethernet connections. For whatever reason when I have my express extend my wifi at home the download speed from just the express is absolutely terrible, drops to about 1.5 mb compared to when it's on the extremes part of the network the speed goes up to 50-75mb. These terrible download speed really only affects the iPhones as my MacBook Pro usually gets the good speed no matter where it is. I don't believe there is anything wrong with my phone because if I am in the part of the house that uses just the extreme the download speeds on the iphone goes up to 50-75mb. As a note I have an AirPort Extreme on the top floor of my house (second floor) that's where my modem is located. On the first floor that's where one airport express is located. I also have another airport express in the basement that is accessed by my landlord. Any thoughts on how to fix this would be helpful.

It appears that your networking goals with the AirPort Express is to use it as a wireless Ethernet bridge instead of using it to extend the wireless range of your AirPort Extreme. The latter requires that the Express Wi-Fi radios be enabled.
If you intended to use the Express as a wireless bridge, you just need to reconfigure it to "Join a wireless" network instead of "Extend a wireless network."
For whatever reason when I have my express extend my wifi at home the download speed from just the express is absolutely terrible, drops to about 1.5 mb compared to when it's on the extremes part of the network the speed goes up to 50-75mb.
In an extended network, the placement of the extending base station is critical as it can only extend the wireless network at the bandwidth at which it receives it.
Please check out the following AirPort User Tip for details on optimal base station placement.

  • Really Weird "Host Name" for my Airport Express!?!

I was looking at my firewall log (I use DoorStop) and I noticed something really strange. I have two airport expresses linked to my airport extreme. As expected, the log shows when these two airport expresses use Bonjour.
The weird thing is that one of them show an IP address of 10.0.1.4 (which is normal), but then shows a "Host Name" of "cscslt72.cardiacstudycenter.com" This doesn't make any sense since I'm just on a home network. I looked this place up and it is located in my city, but I have no clue how their name/web address got associated with my airport express (which is set to "join wireless network").
Can anyone explain how this happened?
I did a reset of the airport express, figuring the host name would go back to normal, but it didn't! What's going on?

No, not unless you connect the two with an Ethernet cable and configure the Express as a bridge.
Consider replacing the Cisco router with the Express. The Express conveys advantages over the E1000.

  • Has anyone experienced the Airport Express getting really hot?

I just got an AirPort Express 802.11n Wi-Fi, model #A1264 and used it on vacation.  It worked fine but the unit got real hot while plugged into the electrical outlet.  Is this normal?   Thanks.

It hard to know exactly what "hot" means, but if you cannot hold your hand on the AirPort Express for 20-30 seconds or so, then it is running too hot.
It's normal for the device to feel hot because the outer case of the device acts to dissipate heat from the internal components.
Just be sure to give the AirPort Express plenty of airspace and try to avoid installing it in a cramped area.

  • Really weird..  After rebbot my PC won't find my Airport Express !

    I've tried every configuration possible.
And the only way my airport express works ( for airplay ) with my PC via Ethenet, is to:

    Any help?
The AE is in a place with bad wifi so it is connected via ethernet.
I wanted to expland my network but it does not work ( probably becouse of my router).
