Airport Express Refuses to Be Setup

I have an old Airport Express that I havent used for almost a year. I wanted to use it today, but it looks like I needed to run the setup again, as all I had was a solid yellow light and it didnt show up in the Airport Admin Utility.
So I did the following:
Unplugged the Express, held down the reset button while pugging it back in and continued to hold it until it blinked green 4x and went to a solid yellow.
I ran the Airport Setup Assistant (v4.2) and chose the set up a new base station option.
It found the Express and I chose to join my existing network (my network showed up in the dropdown list and I added my network password).
I renamed the Express network and finalized.
The Extreme resets, as it should, but the light is now a blinking yellow and it wont show up either in the Airport Admin Utility or iTunes.
And when I go back into the Airport Setup Assistant to update an existing network, it's not in my list of networks.
Anyone have any idea what could be going on here? I did a quick search in the forums, but couldnt find anything.

Are you trying to add the AX as a client or to extend your Internet connectivity (WDS) to your AEBS?

Can the WAN port be used as LAN when AirPort Express (2nd Generation) is setup to join a wireless network? (IE: 2 LAN ports)
I haven't been able to get a clear answer on this. I believe the 1st generation would act as WAN/LAN depending on setting, but what happens with the 2nd generation?
    Thank you for your time.

If the Express joins a wireless network wirelessly, in other words its WAN port isn't connected to anything, the correct way to connect a wired client to it is by using its LAN port.
I don't know what would happen if you were to connect a wired client to its WAN port instead — it's just not supposed to be used for that purpose. It won't permanently break anything if you were to try it though. If you were, the worst that would occur is that your network would become unresponsive as packets continuously traverse its WAN port in a circular fashion, which might require that you power down your router to reset your whole network.
If you are already using your Express's LAN port and you need another, the way to provide more ports is to purchase an inexpensive ($10 or so) switch. Connect it to the LAN port and as many other pieces of equipment as the switch's available number of ports.
You're correct about the first generation with the single Ethernet port. It could be used in either capacity depending on its configuration.

I just bought an AirPort express. Currently I have a qwest wired router plugged into the back of my computer via an ethernet cable. Correct. That's the way to set up the AirPort Express. After connecting your AirPort Express to the router, open AirPort Utility (in /Applications/Utilities) and follow the steps

  • Airport Express refuses to be administered!

I have an Airport Express unit which refuses to be administered.
    Relevant specifications:
Powerbook G3, OS X 10.2.8 with all current updates
Airport Admin Utility says version 3.1.1
Airport Express has version 6.3 firmware
Whenever I try to connect with the Airport Admin Utility, either wired or wireless, I see the Airport Express in Airport Admin, but it has IP 254.128.0.0 instead of 10.0.1.1, like it should. Also it asks for a password, and since I have performed several factory resets, I try public and nothing happens, aside from the error that "it can't read the selected base station configuration".
The wireless card is a Sonnet Aria PC card, with the Broadcom chipset, so it is treated by the OS as an Apple supplied Airport card, shows up in Network System Preferences that way. No sign of malfunction. Anyway the inability to connect also happens while wired to the back of the Airport, so strictly speaking this isn't really about the wireless functions of the Airport Express so much as why I'm unable to adminsiter it.
    Powerbook G3 Mac OS X (10.2.x)
    Powermac G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

According to Apple you need to be running 10.3 to configure an Airport Express.

  • Airport Express Refuses to participate in WDS

    Hey there,
I am using a new wireless N Airport Extreme and an airport express extending it's range while sharing a printer and using airtunes. I have set this device up as "remote", I think that is right!
Now after a couple of months of having this setup working like a charm I have bought another Airport Express, but it simply won't work.
When setting up in the "Automatic" interface, it gets to the part where it asks which network to extend and what the name of the base station must be, then once I click on update it does nothin for a while then comes up with an error message saying "you cannot setup this base station for WDS because this computer does not have a wireless network card"... this error message comes from both my brand new iMac and my MacBook both running 10.4.10.
I can set it up in the manual interface but after I click on "save changes" the program sits claiming it is waiting for the router to restarts and says I can exit if I want. After I exit and re-open the airport utility, I can now only see my new airport express (which is sitting about a foot away from my iMac from now), the Airport utility says that it is fine (green status indicator) but the device itself is flashing amber.
If I try to get back into the settings, it is unable to open the device. To remedy this I have to do a hard reset and start over.
Going in a circle here, help would be much appreciated!
    Thanks a lot!

Did you recently install Leopard (before adding the second Airport Express)?
I purchased a new Airport Extreme Base Station (802.11n w/gigabit) AFTER I had upgraded all of my computers to Leopard. I am having a **** of a time getting the new AEBS to stay connected to my Airport Express (WDS Network with the Express as a remote). In fact, I have given up completely and am returning the new AEBS and have reverting to using my older Airport Extreme Base Station (802.11g), which works PERFECTLY, even with Leopard installed.
    See my message here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1206469&tstart=0
Apple DEFINITELY has some Airport problems pertaining to Leopard and/or the new Airport Extreme Base Stations (gigabit). I will wait for them to work the issues out before attempting to "go N" again.

  • Airport express not found after setup

I have a maddening situation. At the beginning of setting up my airport extreme, the computer has no problem finding the wireless device. However, after the A/E is configured and added to my current network (linksys router), the computer can't find the A/E anymore.
    What's going on?

The following are Apple's instructions for setup using the Airport Setup Assistant, which is different from Airport Utility, but most of the steps are the same. Some are important for your installation, such as "do NOT select extend the range of my Airport..." and entering your network password correctly. Some steps, like plugging in the Airport, you probably already figured out
Since your router is a Linksys product, after the Express is set up you will no longer be able to see it using Airport Utility. The reason is that you set up the Express using its wireless network (Apple Network xxxxxx), which is subsequently disabled after setup. Once you're done and you click Update you'll be using your Linksys wireless network. Airport Utility only recognizes Airport networks. You didn't create one with your Express nor do you want to given your desired setup. If you need to use Airport Utility to configure the Express again you'll need to perform a hard reset.
If everything's right and you have checked iTunes Preferences > Devices "look for remote speakers connected with Airtunes" option you should see a new menu appear in the lower right of the iTunes window.
If this doesn't work, try disabling your router's encryption temporarily to simplify things. Reset the Express and run Airport Utility without a password this time. You may also need to modify your Sharing > Firewall settings too.
    Hope it helps!
Plug AirPort Express into a power outlet.
On your computer, join the wireless network created by AirPort Express.
Open AirPort Setup Assistant. Mac users: Find it in /Applications/Utilities/. Windows users: On the Start menu, point to All Programs and click AirPort.
When you see the Introduction screen, click Continue.
Select "Set up a new AirPort Base Station" and click Next.
When the AirPort Setup Assistant confirms that it has found your AirPort Express, click Continue. (If >your AirPort Express wasn't found, click Try Again.)
Select "Connect to my current wireless network."
Be sure that "Extend the range of my AirPort wireless network" is not selected (this option is used >only for WDS).
Click Next; AirPort Express Assistant will scan for your existing wireless network. Once it finds it, click Next again.
Choose the correct network (there may only be one) from the Wireless Network Name menu. If the wireless network is password protected, you will be prompted to enter the password. Enter the password and then click Next to continue.
Note: If you have difficulty with your password, you can get help with joining a third-party WEP-protected network.
Enter the name of your AirPort Express.
Tip: If you don't know the name, it's what appears in iTunes as the name of your AirTunes remote speakers.
    Click Next.
Assign an administrator password for AirPort Express. This password can be different from any network password, and is used for just changing settings on AirPort Express.
The Summary screen outlines the configuration options you've set. Optionally, you can click Show Passwords to review the administrator and network passwords. Finally, click Next to update AirPort Express with your settings.

  • Airport Express-ATT 2Wire Wireless Setup

I am attempting to set up a new Airport Express with an existing 2Wire Wireless network. Once I get the "join a wireless network" password set up, when I update, I'm kicked off my 2Wire network, and my computer cannot find the Airport.
I have set this Airport up on another network with no problems.
Is there a known issue that I am missing?

When the AirPort Express does not join another wireless network successfully, it's almost always a question of finding correct, compatible security settings. It's not enough to simply enter the correct password.
You'll need to "hard reset" the Express by holding the reset button in until the amber light begins to blink more quickly and then try the configuration again.
Perhaps the simple chart below will give you some ideas. In order to do this correctly and avoid repeated setup attempts, you'll need to get into the settings for the 2 Wire to see exactly how it is configured, security wise.
The examples below assume that you are using WPA security.
Apple WPA2 Personal = Other Manufacturers WPA2-PSK (AES)
Apple WPA/WPA2 Personal = Other Manufacturers WPA-PSK (TKIP)

  • Airport Express not seen by Setup Asst or Admin Utility as Air Tunes remote

I have Earthlink DSL running into an Airport Extreme Base Station and then into my iMac. I bought an Airport Express to play iTunes music over powered speakers in a different room. I plugged the speakers in and then plugged in the Express. The Amber light blinks and neither the Airport Setup Asst or the Admin Utility see it.
I have reset the Express about five times. I was worried about range, so I plugged it in an outlet five feet from the Airport Extreme Base Station. Still flashing amber and the iMac's Airport utilities could not see it.
Do I have a bad Aiport Express or are some of my Base Station settings wrong?
    Andy

Thanks so much for the tips, but unfortunately they leave me with more questions. Can you help?
if you are using wireless to connect to the
Express, you need to make sure that you have the
proper network name selected. It will not be the
name of your existing network because you haven't
set it up for that yet.
Where? The computer just does not see the Express wirelessly.
The easiest way to set up the Airport Express units
is to use an ethernet cable to plug a computer into
    them directly.
And then what do I do to get it set up to be seen when it is wireless?
If you are, for example, trying to set the Airport
Express up in a WDS and you were to get the password
for encryption wrong, forget to set it to the same
channel, forget to give it the same name, or any
other little minor mistakes, it might no longer be
available as a wireless connection unless you reset
    it.
In the config of the Airport Extreme Base Station, in the WDS tab, again, the Express is not seen. I can't make any mistakes because I can't do anything. It has NEVER been seen as a wireless connection.
I'm getting frustrated. Anyone want to buy a three week old Airport Extreme that has never been used but has a lot of pen marks on it from being reset about 20 times?

  • Airport Express refuses to join network.

I have an existing wireless network consisting of a D-Link DGL-4500 router running a mixed 802.11g and 802.11n network.  Everything has been working fine for ages.  I just bought an Airport Express in order to stream iTunes to my receiver.  I plug in the Airport, and get a blinking amber light.  I fire up the Airport Utility app on my iPhone, and right away it sees the Airport.  I configure the Airport for my network, and . . . nothing.  Blinking amber light.  The Airport Utility now cannot find the Airport, and eventually gives up with an error.  I check the logs on the router, and I see no evidence that the Airport has tried to connect to the router (I can't find the MAC anywhere in the logs).
I also tried to configure the Airport using the Airport Utility on my PC (Widnows 7, 64-bit).  I did a factory reset on the Airport.  Thereafter, the Utility will not see the Airport.  I connect the PC directly to the default wireless network created by the Airport, but the Utility still will not see the Airport.  I have to choose "Configure other" from the drop-down and enter the default IP and password for the Airport.  Once I have done so, I can edit the configuration settings, but after entering the correct information, the Airport resets itself, and . . . nothing.  Again, just a blinking amber light. The Airport Utility cannot find the Airport, and eventually gives up with an error. I check the logs on the router, and I see no evidence that the Airport has tried to connect to the router (I can't find the MAC anywhere in the logs).
    Is my Airport broken?

    Bob:
Thanks for the reply.  My understanding is that the iPhone Airport Utility app passes on the network settings to the Airport.  Since the iPhone connects successfully to the router and can access the internet (and therefore presumably "knows" the network), I would think that it is providing the proper information to the Airport.
However, when using the Airport Utility on my PC, I have double (triple) checked that I am entering the correct settings.  I've lost count of the number of tries.  The D-Link is using WPA2-Personal security.
What makes me wonder if the AIrport is faulty is this: I did a factory reset on the Airport.  When it restarts, it thinks it is a base station.  I configure my PC to "join" the Airport network.  However, the Airport Utility still cannot see the Airport, even when connected directly to it.
I did try to connect to the Airport from my Windows XP netbook using an ethernet cable.  The Airport Utility saw the Airport, and allowed me to configure it, but when the Airport restarted, it disappeared.  The Utility could not thereafter find the Airport, and it did not appear in the router logs.

  • Airport express refuses to reset password--solution

For awhile I've been bedeviled by an older Airport Express that could not be accessed via password in order to update firmware. Again and again we tried to reset the password, without success. In searching through the Apple forums I found several people reporting this problem, with no definitive answers given. Most of the threads are too old for replies, so I decided to post here for the benefit of others in my situation.
Anyway, here's what I did: I finally tried the password "admin," and voila! Firmware promptly updated. At that point I was able to go in and change the password to one of my own. Anyone else with this problem might want to try the same thing. Good luck!

According to Apple you need to be running 10.3 to configure an Airport Express.

  • Airport Express refuses to update firmware

I have an airport express that seems to be stuck on the 7.4.1 firmware. Whether I try to upgrade to 7.4.2 or down to an older version, it always stays at 7.4.1. Any suggestions for how to fix this?

Have you tried a Factory Default Reset first, and then tried to update the firmware?
If not, try the reset as follows:
Power down the Express for a few moments
Hold in the reset button and keep holding it in as you then plug the Express back in to power
Release the reset button after 10 seconds
Then open AirPort Utility to see if you can update the device. If you decide to try the default reset, you will lose all of your current settings, so you should understand that you will have to reconfigure the device again from scratch.
If you cannot update the firmware after a few default resets, then there is an issue with your AirPort Express and it will likely need to be exchanged.

  • Airport express Blinks Yellow After Setup

I'm sure this has been asked before, but I couldn't find the answer.
I'm running windows xp on my desktop and have a DLink wireless router.
I'm trying to use airport express to stream music to my stereo. I've had it up and running in the past, but my airport has been unplugged for the last month and now it's stopped working.
I've set everything up with through the Admin utility with my airport connected to my router via ethernet.
Everything is fine until I click to update, the airport restarts, then nothing... just a flashing yellow light.
If anyone could point me in the right direction or tell me what I 'm doing wrong it would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried reseting it and starting from a clean slate? Set it up and then post back.

  • Airport express and network printer setup problem

I could not find and add my network printer in my work place only when network is connected via my airport express. I can see the printer when the network is connected by ethernet cable. Note: the printer I mentioned is not connected to the USB of the AE, it is a separate network printer with a true IP.
Is this a firewall problem in the airport express unit? I have the same problem with my ThinkPad too.

Have you tried putting the printer's IP address into the "add a printer" dialog box IP view of the Print & Fax panel of System Preferences?
It sounds like your AirPort Express is creating another subnet that is making it hard to access the printers subnet. You might try putting the AirPort Express into "bridge" mode.

  • Airport Express and Verizon Fios - setup problem

we recently converted to Verizon Fios - the airport express (used to play music through a stereo) stopped working and is no longer recognized (continuous blinking amber with "no configured station etc")- i have read through older solutions and many deal with different versions of the station or of Airport Utility - my Airport Express is Model A1264 - the Airport Utility is 6.3.1.4 - the OS X is 10.8.3 -
the Verizon Router has the following: (codes left out)
Actiontec number (ending in rev.1 - is this the model #?)
    User name = admin
    password
    ISSID
    WPA2 key
    WPS pin
    Wan Mac
the ISSID (5 digitt alpha and numeric) and the WPA2 Key (16 digit alpha & numeric) have been used to log on all wifi devices in the house (eg iphone/ ipad, streaming netflix) and worked
    any assistance greatly appreciated

i did read your post and had already tried a hard reset - several times - i have done it again to no avail - however i have done the following
    - i have 3 iMacs - one in the next room to where the main one is (the one i am having trouble with) and another in another part of the house with no wifi service - i took the Air Exp and plugged it in next to the iMac furthest away - it was found in seconds
    - i next tried it on the iMac in the next room - it was found - the Utility indicated it was examing the station then it wanted me to set up a new network which it named using my name and Airport Express - it asked for a new password - i gave it to it - THEN it wanted me to plug an ethernet cable into the airport express!! which i can't do - that is why it was being used wirelessly - i can't seem to get past that point
    - the main Imac still will not find the Air Esp station - if i can get the one in the bext room to work the airport express i can transfer the music to it and play from there

  • IPad 16gb wifi +airport express. No utilities setup

    Hey guys,
Here's my problem. I'm in sao Paulo staying in a room that only has Internet via Ethernet cable.
I currently have an Ipad 16gb and an airpot express. Problem is both of these are new and have never been setup or linked together. When I plug in the airport it blinks amber and I can get Internet service. I don't have a computer to run the disk... Am I totally screwed?
    Also I see a
"free public" Internet network when I check my iPads wifi connections. I can connect to it with a strong signal but I can't go online... I get an error saying couldn't connect to the Internet.
I'm totally new to all of this so any help would be totally welcome.
    Thanks for the help!

    No way I know of.
I don't bother if I can't determine who supports the network.
You see a lot of these 'Free Public Wi-Fi' or 'Free Public Network' hotspots in airports. Many of them are hosted on a laptop computer by someone in the concourse looking to steal personal info.
    It's not worth it, IMO.
