Airport Express refuses to update firmware

I have an airport express that seems to be stuck on the 7.4.1 firmware. Whether I try to upgrade to 7.4.2 or down to an older version, it always stays at 7.4.1. Any suggestions for how to fix this?

Have you tried a Factory Default Reset first, and then tried to update the firmware?
If not, try the reset as follows:
Power down the Express for a few moments
Hold in the reset button and keep holding it in as you then plug the Express back in to power
Release the reset button after 10 seconds
Then open AirPort Utility to see if you can update the device. If you decide to try the default reset, you will lose all of your current settings, so you should understand that you will have to reconfigure the device again from scratch.
If you cannot update the firmware after a few default resets, then there is an issue with your AirPort Express and it will likely need to be exchanged.

  • Airport express will not update firmware.

The unit works fine, it's about one month old. Every time I open up the airport utility it says that 'This Airport Express should be updated to the latest firmware. Current version: 7.4.1 Available version 7.4.2" I've run this update at least four times and every time it completes 'successfully.' Upon returning to the airport utility mainpage, it just says the same thing again. It's just stuck at 7.4.1.
    Any ideas?

    Welcome to the discussions!
I've been able to fix this issue in the past by doing a factory default reset on the AirPort Express and then updating the firmware before reconfiguring the device.
To do this, power down the Express
Hold in the reset button and keep holding it in as you plug the device back into power
Release the reset button after approximately 10 seconds
You can also return the device to factory defaults when it is selected and you have AirPort Utility already open. From the Base Station menu at the very top of your screen up by the Apple icon, select Restore Default Settings
It might be a good idea to temporarily connect an ethernet cable from you computer to the Express to help AirPort Utility "discover" the device once you have done the reset.

  • Airport Express won't update firmware

My Airport Express can't seem to complete a firmware update.  During the installation process, an error message pops up that reads "An error occurred while updating the firmware.  -6753."  Any suggestions for how to get past this error?

I simply would not accept a 4 year old device as new. You may feel otherwise.
A guess, based on the info in your post, would be that you might have a defective unit, new or not.
Suggest that you try a Factory Default Reset a few more times. If things won't "take" after a few tries, it is pretty clear that the Express is not working correctly.

  • Airport Express refuses to be administered!

I have an Airport Express unit which refuses to be administered.
    Relevant specifications:
Powerbook G3, OS X 10.2.8 with all current updates
Airport Admin Utility says version 3.1.1
Airport Express has version 6.3 firmware
Whenever I try to connect with the Airport Admin Utility, either wired or wireless, I see the Airport Express in Airport Admin, but it has IP 254.128.0.0 instead of 10.0.1.1, like it should. Also it asks for a password, and since I have performed several factory resets, I try public and nothing happens, aside from the error that "it can't read the selected base station configuration".
The wireless card is a Sonnet Aria PC card, with the Broadcom chipset, so it is treated by the OS as an Apple supplied Airport card, shows up in Network System Preferences that way. No sign of malfunction. Anyway the inability to connect also happens while wired to the back of the Airport, so strictly speaking this isn't really about the wireless functions of the Airport Express so much as why I'm unable to adminsiter it.

  • Airport express refuses to reset password--solution

For awhile I've been bedeviled by an older Airport Express that could not be accessed via password in order to update firmware. Again and again we tried to reset the password, without success. In searching through the Apple forums I found several people reporting this problem, with no definitive answers given. Most of the threads are too old for replies, so I decided to post here for the benefit of others in my situation.
Anyway, here's what I did: I finally tried the password "admin," and voila! Firmware promptly updated. At that point I was able to go in and change the password to one of my own. Anyone else with this problem might want to try the same thing. Good luck!

  • AirPort Express constantly restarting after firmware upgrade

    Hello,
I have an AirPort Express that extends a wireless network created by a Time Capsule. They are identified by AirPort Utility 5.6 as "AirPort Express 802.11n" and "Time Capsule 802.11n (4th Generation)". The AirPort Express has worked properly for several years, but after updating the firmware to 7.6.1 a few weeks ago, it regurlaly hangs for a while, but works fine again for hours or days in between (so it isn't broken). The Time Capsule was upgraded to 7.6.1 at the same time and works without problems.
When the AirPort Express hangs, it's restarting itself all the time: the status light is solid amber for about a minute (starting up), then flashes two times amber (connecting), becomes green (ok) for half a second, and then solid amber again (restarting). This cyclic restarting can last for hours. Very strange behavior... During such cyclic restarting, it is on so shortly that it never shows up in AirPort Utility and it is impossible to connect and read the log file.
A factory default reset is possible and allows to configure it with AirPort Utility. But after reconfiguring, the AirPort Express entrers the cyclic restarting again. The same happens when configuring to join (instead of extend) the wireless network. After trying to factory-reset and reconfigure several times and finally letting it in its cyclic restarting for a while, it suddenly comes back on and will work again for several hours or even days (until the problem comes back again).
My next try will be to revert to firmware 7.6 (AirPort Utility 5.6 > Base Station > Upoad Firmware...). Any other ideas around?
    P.S.
I didn't find several (advanced) functionalities of the original AirPort Utility (5.6) in the new version (6.x): for example "Upload Firmware", "Logs and Statistics", "Use dynamic global hostname", "Disconnect disk users", etc. I hope 5.6 will be available and maintained for a while...

At the next hang of the AirPort Express and after a factory reset, I tried to revert to firmware 7.6 (AirPort Utility 5.6 > Base Station > Upoad Firmware… > select firmware from a list of available versions). After a while, it failed with the following error message:
An error occurred while updating the firmware.
Make sure your Apple Wi-Fi base station is plugged in and in range of your computer or connected via Ethernet and try again. (-1)
The Airport express was hanging again. After another factory reset, the menu item Upload Firmware… didn't show available firmware versions anymore, but asked to open a file in a finder pane. Is this expected behaviour?
The event log of the Time Capsule shows the following entries during the cyclic restarting of the AirPort Express (which doesn't give me a clue about the cause of my problem):

  • Airport Express will not update

My Airport Express is 7.4.1 and over the last two years where it asked me to update to 7.6.1, it never works. Why?

I have had a similar problem with one of my AEX's.
The hard reset & direct ethernet connection would not allow a reset or a firmware update.
I have just discovered that if one hovers over the device at hand when it appears in the Airport Utility list (column on the left) & right-click (or control-click), a virtual menu appears that includes "Restore to Default Settings," which was successful. The device was ethernet-connected for the reset & once it was restored I was able to update the firmware to 7.4.2.
It now is back in working order wirelessly.
Hope this may be of help to others!

  • Airport Express 802.11n Wifi firmware

    Hello,
    i have an Airport Express 802.11n Wifi Model-Number: A1264
Somehow Airport Utility cannot update the firmware to 7.x. It is stuck at 6.3.
I tried loading the firmware while holding the option key. But Airport Utility tells me it cannot install the 7.4.2 Firmware on this device.
Also there is no option for "n network in the wireless settings in the utility.
What can i do? Whats wrong with may Airport Express?

I don't have my long list of Apple model numbers handy, but I can confirm that if you bought an AirPort Express(n), you would certainly see a Radio Mode option to include 802.11n when you look at the settings in AirPort Utility.
I believe that the firmware for the 802.11n models started with version 7.3.1. I would guess that the "7" designates the addition of "n" capabilities.
I suspect a mistake was made and the device will need to be exchanged.

  • Airport Express Signal Weakness after Firmware 7.5.2 upgrade

I was trying to update my firmware on my Samsung Blu-Ray player b/c the menu was faulty, then I noticed it was not detecting my wireless network from my Airport Express that was clearly visible to my iPad and Mac Book Pro. So I went ahead and also updated my firmware for the Airport Express at the same time to 7.5.2 because it kept telling me it was needed.
Now with the new firmware, my wireless network is often not detected by my iPad and MacBook Pro if they are downstairs and 1 room over and is very slow when they do connect. I used AirRadar to sense if it was maybe getting some noise from another neighbor's network, or on the same channel, and neither was the case. I tried changing channels just in case to 8, but still only 35-39% strength downstairs or 25 feet away (but 95% in same room). I also tried changing to broadcasting at only 2.4 Ghz and 5 Ghz and neither seemed to work better.
So my question is- could the new firmware decrease signal strength? Can I go back to my old one? If so, I tried changing firmware versions but it won't allow me to select it as a drop down.
Any other ideas? The iPad used to be so fast. Now we can't use any web-based apps downstairs.

I found the same after a recent upgrade. After trying different things, I reverted to the previous software and all was fine. I lost 50% of my signal with the new upgrade, hardly an improvement. I wish you well.

  • ITunes sending at least -20db to airport express after security update

Hi all, did anyone notice anything strange after this week's security update?
My airport express is conected to a receiver and the volume was ok, 65w per channel and a pair of decent JBL speakers.
Now i need to set up my receiver to 0 db (maximum volume) to get an audible sound. I think that if there was something wrong with my receiver i should be getting no sound at all or at least some weird sound. Can anyone help me with this one?
Everytime i turn on iTunes i get a big pop sound through the receiver/speakers, and this was not happening before.
Well, i guess this is either a bug or my receiver is broken...
    Thanks in advance, Leo.
Does Apple have anything to say?

I already checked the receiver with a different sound source and it's all working fine.
I guess it is either a bug or a hardware issue on airport express.
Please help me. I can't live with wires anymore...
    Thanks.

  • Airport Express Refuses to Be Setup

I have an old Airport Express that I havent used for almost a year. I wanted to use it today, but it looks like I needed to run the setup again, as all I had was a solid yellow light and it didnt show up in the Airport Admin Utility.
    So I did the following:
Unplugged the Express, held down the reset button while pugging it back in and continued to hold it until it blinked green 4x and went to a solid yellow.
I ran the Airport Setup Assistant (v4.2) and chose the set up a new base station option.
It found the Express and I chose to join my existing network (my network showed up in the dropdown list and I added my network password).
I renamed the Express network and finalized.
The Extreme resets, as it should, but the light is now a blinking yellow and it wont show up either in the Airport Admin Utility or iTunes.
And when I go back into the Airport Setup Assistant to update an existing network, it's not in my list of networks.
Anyone have any idea what could be going on here? I did a quick search in the forums, but couldnt find anything.

  • Airport Express Refuses to participate in WDS

    Hey there,
I am using a new wireless N Airport Extreme and an airport express extending it's range while sharing a printer and using airtunes. I have set this device up as "remote", I think that is right!
Now after a couple of months of having this setup working like a charm I have bought another Airport Express, but it simply won't work.
When setting up in the "Automatic" interface, it gets to the part where it asks which network to extend and what the name of the base station must be, then once I click on update it does nothin for a while then comes up with an error message saying "you cannot setup this base station for WDS because this computer does not have a wireless network card"... this error message comes from both my brand new iMac and my MacBook both running 10.4.10.
I can set it up in the manual interface but after I click on "save changes" the program sits claiming it is waiting for the router to restarts and says I can exit if I want. After I exit and re-open the airport utility, I can now only see my new airport express (which is sitting about a foot away from my iMac from now), the Airport utility says that it is fine (green status indicator) but the device itself is flashing amber.
If I try to get back into the settings, it is unable to open the device. To remedy this I have to do a hard reset and start over.
Going in a circle here, help would be much appreciated!
    Thanks a lot!
    -Nic

Did you recently install Leopard (before adding the second Airport Express)?
I purchased a new Airport Extreme Base Station (802.11n w/gigabit) AFTER I had upgraded all of my computers to Leopard. I am having a **** of a time getting the new AEBS to stay connected to my Airport Express (WDS Network with the Express as a remote). In fact, I have given up completely and am returning the new AEBS and have reverting to using my older Airport Extreme Base Station (802.11g), which works PERFECTLY, even with Leopard installed.
    See my message here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1206469&tstart=0
Apple DEFINITELY has some Airport problems pertaining to Leopard and/or the new Airport Extreme Base Stations (gigabit). I will wait for them to work the issues out before attempting to "go N" again.

  • Airport Express 'names' not updating in Itunes 'speakers'

    Love the iphone remote app
purchased a few airport expresses -
    Named them - Renamed them
BUT itunes is NOT picking up the renames -
any clues on how I 'refresh' the speaker list names in itunes?

It has a separate name for the AirPort itself and the "iTunes Speaker Name." Use the AirPort Utility and click "Manual Setup" for the AirPort Express, then click the Music icon in the toolbar at the top. From there you can change the name it shows in iTunes.
