Airport Express resets every 5-10 min

Hi there,
I've got a new Airport Express (n-version) and it's set up to join my existing wireless network. Attached to the Airport's Ethernet port is a fileserver with all my music, movies, etc. In the Airport config utility I've enabled the setting to "Allow ethernet connections". So in other words I use the Airport to make my fileserver wireless.
When I use my MacBook or laptop to connect to the fileserver wirelessly, it all works fine at first (although a bit slow). But when I run a movie or copy a file from the fileserver on my MacBook/laptop, the Airport reboots itself every 5 to 10 min (orange light flashing). Takes about 30secs to get back online. Needless to say, you can't use it to watch a movie if the connection only lasts for 10 min
This is the second Airport that I've tried (returned the 1st to the store because of the reset) and both have the same problem, so I don't think it's malfunctioning hardware. Both the firmware and the Airport utility are updated to the latest version. I've tried the "robust connection" setting, which doesn't help either
Anybody got an idea how to solve this?
Thanks a lot!

AIrport extreme is setup. Airport express reset to factory settings. Light continues to blink amber. Utility will not recognize express to setup

Thanks. We understand that you want to use the Express to set up a separate wireless network with another modem, is that correct?
Unfortunately, we did not receive an answer to the questions that we asked above and have repeated again below regarding the AirPort Express and AirPort Utility. We asked these questions because not all versions of the AirPort Express are compatible with all versions of AirPort Utility.
What model of AirPort Express do you have?  If you are not sure, please locate the model number on the side or bottom of the AirPort Express. It starts with an "A" followed by four numbers.  It might be something like A1264 or A1392.
What version of AirPort Utility are you using? If you are not sure, please open AirPort Utility, click on the AirPort Utility menu in the upper left corner of the screen, and then click on About AirPort Utility.

  • Airport Express offline every morning

I've got an airport express at the office and am having a strange problem with it. Every morning, the wireless network doesn't show up on any of the PC's that use it. It used to happen multiple times a day and I've made a few changes (as described below) that have gotten it down to just happening every morning.
The original configuration that had to be rebooted regularly was:
    WPA + WPA2 for security
    Automatic channel selection
    DHCP for IP address
The new configuration that just goes offline overnight is:
    WPA for security
    Channel 10 hard coded
    Hard coded IP address
There is a second airport express nearby that is hard coded to use channel 1 and has a dynamic address. It uses WEP for security and works fine for long periods.
    Scott

Just to be clear, The second airport express that is just running WEP isn't mine. I've just talked to the users to see if they have been having any issues.

  • Airport Express problems with new MAC MINI and DLINK router SOLVED

Hi just thought I would post this as it may well help others experiencing similar frustrations with new core duo mac mini and wireless connection or quality problems across the network / internet etc
I have a 3 week old, new mac mini core duo 1.8ghz 2gig ram, 120gb disk - First Mac, connecting to my exisiting wireless network via DLINK ADSL Router 2MB Broadband also one windows laptop and pc also wireless on the network and two airport express potins to stream itunes to
    Problem was briefly
Mac worked fine, but the network connection just far too slow, laptop and pc, 1800+ kbps downstream mac mini 90 - 150kbps (http://www.adslguide.org/tools/speedtest.asp)
also if i ping the router directly from terminal (ping -c 20 192.168.1.1) average response 12+ ms with 20% packet loss, yet laptop and pc avg 2ms no losses
Spent 2 evenings on frustrating calls of more than 1 hour each (due to being cut off , then ring back and closed etc etc) and carrying out a the helpdesk troubleshooting (I am an IT consultant I think I am above this level), eventually an archive and install of the os as well
last night I call for the third time, insisting I dont wish to carry out any further troubleshooting, and want it replaced and resolved or my money back
I receive a call back from product specialist (not sure if thats mac mini specialist or airport) but we resolved the issue (his knowledge far superior to the help desk do this do this attitude)
between us we carried out the folowing and resolved the problem and I am now very happy
mac now downstreaming also in excess of 1800kbps (as expected for 2mb broadband)and no packet loss
This problem was resolved by switching off the turbo option hidden away in the routers settings, under wireless configuration
Supposed to improve performance, but its rubbish and will make hardly any difference under mac os to the speed but will certainly affect your mac mini performance(you may have a similar setting switched on in your routers and mac os dont like it)
We stumbled across this by first disconnecting one of the airport express devices from my dlink network, and using it on its own default apple wireless settings, effectively making it a standalone wireless network, and not via the dlink router
we then carried out the same ping with the ip address of this device (from airport admin utility default 10.0.1.1) and the results were fantastic 2ms avg no package loss
this established it was something with the router, and how we then interrogated the routers settings and found the turbo on option within wireless configuration
you may not be able to replicate this if you dont have an additional network you could join (such as airport express), but probably worth checking your own router settings for something similar
Hope that may be of assistance to others, sorry that its a bit long winded and garbled, but I'm just so excited to finally get my new mac working as i would expect it to
Also perhaps insist on speaking to a product specialist immediately that the helpdesk are unable to help you

Hello macfar14. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
For just streaming iTunes and/or for sharing a USB printer, the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) just needs to be configured as a wireless client ... which you already attempted to do.
Just to be sure nothing was missed, here are the basic steps to do this:
Either connect to the AX's wireless network or connect directly, using an Ethernet cable, to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then using the AirPort Utility in "Manual Setup" mode, make the following changes:
    AirPort > Wireless
o Wireless Mode: Join a wireless network
o Network Name: <existing wireless network's Network Name or SSID>
o Wireless Security: <select the encryption type of the existing wireless network>
o Wireless Password: <enter the existing wireless network password>
o Verify Password: <re-enter the existing wireless network password>
    Music
    o Enable AirTunes (checked)
o iTunes Speaker Name: <enter desired speaker name>
    o iTunes Speaker Password: (optional)
    o Verify Password: (optional)
o Click Update to write the new settings to the AX
    In iTunes:
    iTunes > Preferences... > Advanced > General
o Look for remote speakers connected with AirTunes (checked)

  • Airport Express disconnects every 5mins (Client Mode)

    Hi all,
I recently bought an Airport Express (n) so I could stream music to my Hi-Fi and bridge my Xbox 360.
I have configured the AX to connect to my existing wireless network which is served up by a Billion 7800n router (G+N mode).
However, every 5 minutes it disconnects from the network, here are sample of the logs..

I'm using WPA2 AES encryption, wireless is on a non-competing channel and the airport is only 2-3 meters away from the router in the same room.
Things I've tried are upgrading Router firmware to latest (1.6), switching Wi-Fi channels, enabling B mode on the router (BGN) but nothing seems to work.
I don't think it's interference as it disconnects almost every 5 minutes which suggests some config/hardware issue.
Anyone have any ideas? I've hit a brick wall.
    Thanks...

    Update:
This appears to be by design? - connection doesn't drop when using AirTunes/Airfoil which is what I bought it for.
However I thought the Ethernet port wouldn't work when used in Client mode (according to the FAQ). I was able to connect my Xbox 360 to the AX when in Client mode using a network cable and it is able to connect to Xbox Live. When doing this it drops off on the 5 minute intervals when the AX disconnects and reconnects.
I guess if I used AirTunes at the same time as the X360 it would work.
Would be nice if it worked as a stable bridge in client mode as I could bin off my other wireless bridges. Never mind - I ain't forking out for another AX so I can use "Apple's" WDS.

  • Airport Express and Lacie Ethernet Disk Mini Home Edition

    Hello -
I recently bought a Lacie Ethernet Disk Mini - Home Edition. I have it all set up on my home network when all of a sudden my Netgear router bites the big one.
I am looking into getting the Airport Express for its wireless streaming capabilities. My question is:
    - Can I hook my cable modem through the USB port on the Airport Express for internet use? If so, can I hook my Disk Mini into the Ethernet port on the Airport Extreme to access my drive? If not, I spose I can buy a regular linksys switch to split the lines?

    1. No, the USB port on the AirPort Express is solely for printer usage.
    2. With the latest AirPort Expresses you should be able to access your hard drive via ethernet, but since there is only one port you will have to have another wireless router to broadcast your internet. And you can't just have a router to split the port on the Express, it either runs in WAN mode (which is for a cable or dsl modem) or LAN mode (for accessing your hard drive). It can't run in both at the same time.
You could buy a cheap Linksys router but I can't guarantee how well the Express will work with extending the wireless network. It really sounds like you need to get the AirPort Extreme Base Station.

  • Time Capsule must be reset every 10-15 min

We lose our internet every 10-15 minutes and must reset the router. The weird thing is that Windows systems are not affected, only our IMAC. Has anyone run into anything like this before?

Thanks for this thought- I have been having the same problem in my office with frequently dropped connection, and have suspected all along that it was the work of the dread time capsule!! i've heard nothing but complaints about how it works.
i'll also be switching back to the airport extreme as the main base station for the office, since we never had any problems with it, and see if I can't get the Time Capsule to act as a wireless print server/hard drive as well.

  • Can I add an Airport Express Card to my Mac mIni?

  • IPhone reset every 5-10 min

I have bought an unlocked IPhone 4S and recieved it Dec 8th, I planned to use this IPhone on my trip to Saudi Arabia, the issue is that when I was trying to set up the phone here, it starts to restart randomly and the battery indicator doesn't reflect the real battery level, when it restarts it givs me the new battery level.
I've tried to restore and DFU restore but no success, can I mail the IPhone back to US and make Apple mail me another one to Suadi Arabia, coz I'm not going back there till next year.

you cannot mail the phone back directly to Apple.  They will not accept phones from out of the country.  You need to send your phone to someone in the USA to bring your phone into Apple for evaluation and possible exchange.  This is the only way to get warranty service on your phone.  It is why it is always advisable to purchase the phone in your own country.

  • AirPort express base station always on amber light

I live in China and use a macbook and an Airport Express base station to acess internet. It used to work really well, but after I changed my internet conection to China telecom (using an Alcatel ADSL home plusplus 500 modem) I can't acess using airport express (because every time I conect it to the modem it does not work - doesn't get signal). The amber light keeps flashing... I tried through the airport utility, but the base station doesn't appear on the list.
I also already reset the airport express base station. Still the same.
The China telecom technician was not helpful at all - he told me he "doesn't know apple"....
I don't have any problem with the internet conection if I use an ethernet cable directly from the modem to the computer; it only malfunctions when I connect the airport base station to the modem.
    Can anyone help me?

Maybe Windows is trying to get an 802.1x authentication which should be disabled:
Ensure that the Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication for this network check box is not checked.

It seems updating Windows XP to Service Pack 2 fixes that.

  • AirPort Express (with N) restarts on high load

Hello! My AirPort Express (with N) restarts on high load. For instance, when I try to use P2P-online TV streaming, AirPort Express restarts every one minute. When I try to copy large file from one MacBook to Mac mini via Wi-Fi, AirPort Express restarts again. AirPort uses PPPoE, wireless freq is 5GHz (on 2,4GHz problem stays at place). Everything else works fine. What can I do? Thanks in advance.

I have tried everything. So now I think this is hardware issue.

  • Airport Express - status repeatedly cycling from solid amber to solid green

Hello, my Airport is cycling solid green to solid amber approximately every 5 minutes or so. Any insight would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

Perform a Factory Default Reset on the AirPort Express
Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule FAQ
After the Express restarts, it should blink amber slowly. If you try the Factory Default Reset a few times and the Express will not blink amber slowly after it restarts, you have a defective AirPort Express that will need to be replaced.

  • Wireless Connectivity problem between BT HomeHub and AirPort Express

    Hi Guys,
I'm new here, and have just bought my 1st Apple product!
I'm afraid I haven't had a very good start though, and would really appreciate some assistance please.
My problem is with connecting my Apple AirPort Express ("APX") to my BT HomeHub ("BTHH") wirelessly, whilst also being able to use the internet. I can only get the internet to work, whilst also streaming music from itunes to APX, by connecting the APX to the BTHH via an Ethernet cable. Perhaps I should state my equipment:
    *Room #1*
    Computer: Laptop
Operating System: Windows XP, Service Pack 2
Modem: BT Homehub (the curved version with blue lights)
    Above Connection Method: Wireless.
    *Room #2*
    Hi-Fi (Linn)
    Apple AirPort Express
Above Connection Method: Digital (mini to regular toslink).
    *What I Want:*
    - To be able to wirelessly connect to the internet (PC to BTHH)
    - To be able to wirelessly stream music to the APX from iTunes
    - to be able to do both of the above simultaneously.
    Problem:
Once my laptop has found the APX network, as soon as I then connect to it, my BTHH internet connection disappears. or the APX disappears and I have to do a factory restet before my computer can discover it again. (It leaves me having access to only one network or the other). Hence, I cannot stream music to the AirPort and use the internet simultaneously. One or the other. I am trying to "Join an Existing Network" via the AirTunes software.
Very depressed as I don't know much about networking and had hoped it would just configure automatically. I have fiddled but it always loses the presence of the AirPort altogether until I do a factory reset for it to reappear as an available wireless network again.
Please please help a struggling newby - anybody got an idiot's, step-by-step guide to the perfect settings? thank you to anybody who can assist.

  • Setup wireless network for mac and pc with Airport Express?

    Mac Mini/OSX/10.8.2/Airport Express
    Question,
I have my AIrPort Express setup for my Mac Mini and I have dell computer that I want to share the wireless network. Is it possible to setup a wireless network with my mini and the pc using only the AirPort Express? Is the Airport Express a wireless router?
    Thanks,

If your Mac Mini is connecting to the Express using wireless, then this confirms that the device is working correctly.
The Express is a wireless router that can support up to 10 wireless connections, so your Dell computer should be able to connect assuming that its wireless card is working correctly, and the Dell indentifies the network and enters the correct wireless network password.
If you are having difficulty with the Dell PC connecting, this Windows troubleshooting document might help:
