Airport express RJ-45 jack for a network drive?

I am interested in extending my airport express network with a second airport express. Can I use the RJ-45 jack to connect a network drive (Buffalo LinkStation) or is the jack intended only for an incoming signal from cable/DSL modem? Or do I just need to get a regular wireless router with a multi-port switch? Does the airtunes functionality work on a wireless network provided by a non-apple router? I know getting a regular router is the less expensive way to go, but I would not mind having a second airport express for the airtunes capability if it could also run my network drive. I also know I can add an airport extreme to my network, which has extra ports, but's that's more than I want to spend.
Thanks for any advice.

Yes, you could buy a second Airport Express and configure it to "extend" the existing wireless network created by your existing Airport Express. The ethernet port on the new Airport Express would then be active and yes - you could cable a network drive to its ethernet port.
Yes, you can configure an Airport Express to wirelessly provide iTunes streaming on a wireless network created by a non-Apple wireless router.
My suggestion - for best performance, I recommend the network drive be cabled into your network. Therefore:
- buy a non-Apple wireless router, and use it to create your wireless network. The network driver could be cabled to one of the LAN ports on that wireless router
- configure your existing Airport Express as a wireless client on that router's wireless network. You can then wirelessly stream iTunes and print to a printer connected to that Airport Express.

  • Can I use airport express to create a local wireless network that my apple tv can connect to for AirPlay/mirroring in student halls/dorm without Internet connection

    Hi I was wondering :
Would I be able to make a local wireless network using airport express that my apple tv can connect to which in turn is connected to a projector with hdmi in so that I can mirror/AirPlay from iPhone pad and mac

will the Airport Express allow you to log onto a hotel wireless network, and broadcast a secure wireless network in your room for your wireless devices, like the Ipad, Iphone, etc.?
The bottom line with a single AirPort Express is no.
The AirPort Express can only "extend" a wireless network when the network is being provided by another Apple router.
As you might imagine, it is extremely unlikely that that the hotel network....which no doubt uses professional wireless access points provided by a manufacturer of commercial systems.....would be compatible with an AirPort Express.
In many years of travel domestically and internationally, I cannot recall a time when a single AirPort Express would "extend" the signal provided by a hotel's wireless network.
However, if you had two AirPort Express devices handy, you might be able to configure one to "join" the hotel network and provide an Ethernet signal to the second AirPort Express, which would be configured to "create" your own "private"  wireless network.

How many airport express can I add to my network for the purpose of using the airport express to send audio signal to different rooms in the house? I'm interested I'm running about six different zones.
What I'm looking to do is to have self powered in ceiling speakers in every room in my house with out having to run wires to every room to carry the audio signal. I would like to use the airport express to do the job of carting the audio signal.
Here's my set up now I have an airport extreme and one airport express that I use to carry audio to one room.

FWIW. I have used up to four AirPort Express Base Stations (AX) for streaming sucessfully in pretty much the way you have described. I didn't have a need to try more so I can't attest that more would or would not work.

  • Airport Express as wifi card for Xbox Live, then connect to Extreme network

My son just got xbox Live and we're trying to use Airport Express as wifi card for xbox (connected to xbox via ethernet). We use Airport Extreme as router for the house.
We're having trouble setting up Xbox Live, keep getting stuck at getting the xbox to communicate/access the web. Error reads "can't obtain IP address from router... make sure DHCP is enabled and has a large enough address range for all devices on network.. also make sure MAC filtering allows your console's MAC address or is disabled... "
We dont' know what else to do. I'm at wit's end before giving Gates $100... Anyone know how to get connected?
    Thank you!

You can also perform a simple test to verify if you have an internet connection at the ethernet port on the AirPort Express.
Move a laptop near the Express, turn off the wireless on the laptop, and connect to the Express using an ethernet cable. See if you can open your browser and get a good solid internet connection.
If you can, the Express is setup correctly and you know that you have an internet connection reaching all the way to the Xbox.
If you can't then there is a configuration error somewhere and it will need to be identified and corrected.

  • Airport Express connecting to an existing wired network

    Hello,
I'm trying to connect an Airport Express unit to an existing wired network, can someone please help me to set this up or what I need to do? I originally connected the ethernet cable from the device (airport express) to the switch it was on but it didn't work and the other computers were connecting to that network. Should I setup the Airport Express in Bridge Mode or will i need to fiddle around with the settings a bit?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Regards,
    Daniel

Not sure what the difficulty is here.
All you really need to do is connect the Express to the switch with an Ethernet connection, open AirPort Utility on your Windows machine, and click Continue to get the process going.
If you need to download and install AirPort Utility for the PC, it is here:
    AirPort Utility 5.6.1 for Windows
Select the "Create a wireless network" option, assign a device name and password to the Express, then assign a wireless network name and password for the wireless network that you want the Express to provide.
Select the Bridge Mode option when it appears and click Update to save the settings.
The Express will restart and you should have a green light on the Express.
Then, log on to that wireless network from the iPad.

  • HT4259 Airport Express that were part of another network

I have two Airport Expresses that were part of another network and I am now trying to configure them on a new network to wirelessly extend it, but can not discover them on the AirPort Utility and I factory reset them as well and still they are not being discovered.  They plugged in only about 4-6 feet away from the base station (Airport Extreme). What should I do?

If you are using Lion 10.7.4 as your profile indicates.....
Open AirPort Utility and look at the rectangular box in the upper left hand corner of the AirPort Utility window.
It should read Other AirPort Base Stations (1) if you have reset the Express correctly.
Click on Other AirPort Base Stations (1), then click on the the AirPort Express xxxxxxx
AirPort Utility will take a minute to analyze your network, then announce that the Express will be configured to Extend your wireless network
Edit the name of the AirPort Express device if you wish, then click Next
Allow a minute or two for AirPort Utility to configure the Express
When you see the message that Setup is compete, click Done
Configure the second AirPort Express the same way.

  • Using the AirPort Express to Join an existing Wireless Network

    Hello,
I am hoping you can provide me with some help on this... I recelty acquired a PowerMac G4 with a 450 MHz processor, CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive, Zip Drive, 1 GB RAM, and two 40 GB HD... The system has OS 10.4 installed, and it is has built-in Ethernet...
I was told I could use the Airport Express to connect to an existing wireless network, so I purchased an Airport Express base Station... Thing is, to e honest, I am having a bit of a problem getting started...
    - First, to connect from the AirPort Express to my G4, do I need a special kind of Ethernet cable, or will the usual kind do?
    - Second do I need to istall the software first, or have the Airport express connected to the G4 before I do?
How would I go about setting this up, step-by-step?
    Any information would be appreciated...
    Thanks for your time...

OK, thanks. Hopefully, the Netgear is creating a wireless network using WPA/WPA2 security. That will make it much easier for the AirPort Express (AX) to join the wireless network. It can join networks with using WEP security, but password issues almost always arise using WEP.
Since you must enter the exact security settings and password for the wireless network, it would help tremendously to know this in advance. Otherwise, it's going to be a series of "trial and errors" and likely frustration, later on.
When you have a moment, check the security settings on the Netgear router.
It might be one of the following: WPA2 Personal, WPA/WPA2 Personal, WEP 128, WEP 40.

  • Using Airport Express as internet connection for one Mac and one PC

Will probably be judged a complete dork for this question. I have successfully set up my Imac G5 to run an internet connection through an Airport express. My partner runs a PC (Windows XP) and I want to connect this too. Have installed a USB wireless card on the PC, and installed Airport Utility, but it just won't find the Airport Express - it will however find the Imac with something like 96% signal strength. So I set up a network on the Mac and have successfully linked into it with the PC, but it soon comes up with a connectivity problem that will not allow internet browsing. So two questions - can I connect two computers to the Airport Express at once for internet browsing, or do I have to do it through linking the PC to a wireless network? If the latter is the route - any ideas on what the connectivity issue will be? Help!

No, not if the AirPort Express "joins" the wireless network.
No, I do not want to join a network.
It is possible to have the AirPort Express "create" a separate wireless network that would not have access to the Internet, but if you did this, you would need to log off of your normal network....(losing your Internet connection) and then log onto the AirPort Express network when you wanted to listen to AirPlay.
Then, when you wanted to have Internet access, you would have to log off of the AirPort Express network and log back onto your normal wireless network.
Ok, I understand that it is not possible to use airport express only for sound streaming while having an Internet connection at the same time. Airport express does need to join a network if I want sound streaming next an Internet connection. I wanted airport express not to get into way of my Internet connection because in this case the sound streaming messes up sometimes. When I configure airport express only as a sound output, the problems I encounter fade away but then I cannot access to the Internet. Anyhow thanks a lot for the answer.

    any ideas?

Try a hard reset on the Express by holding in the reset button until the amber light begins to flash more quickly, keep holding when you see this for another few seconds and then release.
Move the Express near your computer and temporarily, connect to is using an ethernet cable
Open AirPort Utility - Click Manual Setup
Click the Base Station tab to name the device, assign password and adjust Time Zone settings
    Click the Wireless tab
Wireless Mode = Extend a wireless network
Wireless Network Name = Same as your main network
Check mark next to Allow Wireless Clients
Wireless Security = Same setting as your main network
Password = Same as main network
    Confirm Password
Click the Music icon to check to see that AirTunes is enabled. It should be by default.
    Click Update to save settings
After the Express has restarted, you can disconnect the ethernet cable and move the Express back to the desired location.

  • Can I use the Airport Express to create a secure wireless network in a wireless-only hotel?

  • Airport Express Card on a wireless PC network??

Hey there, I was curious if it was possible to use a G5 with an Airport Express Card on a wireless PC network. My wife needs to be able to access the internet from another part of the house. Someone mentioned that it might be possible, but I can't seem to find anything explaining how to do it. Thanks for your time!
    Jeff

Which wireless router are you using?
    Are you using WEP?
One of the problems with WEP is that the actual standard relies on a 10 character HEX key for 40bit WEP and a 26 character HEX key for 128bit WEP.
In order to make things easier for people, vendors use certain algorithms to convert simple alphanumeric passwords (or passphrases) into HEX keys, thus enabling people to use simple memorable WEP password rather than lengthy HEX keys.
The problem is that different vendors use different algorithms to generate the HEX key and therefore a ASCII password on an AEBS will be hashed differently on a Netgear client and vice versa.
One thing is a 13 character 128 bit WEP password will be hashed by all vendors in the same way (if you use 40bit WEP then a 5 character password is required).
Though sometimes not even that works and the HEX key must be used regardless.

A router signal can not be boosted as all routers put out the maximum allowed by law.  However, proper placement of a secondary router will enable it to "repeat" or extend the signal.
An Airport can "extend" the WiFi created by another Airport.  It can not extend a non-Apple WiFi.  You need TWO Airport units, one to function as the main radio and the other to function as an extender.  I used two Express units.
Configuration is simple if you start from a factory default condition.  Connect the main Airport to AC power and finally to the Internet modem (or modem/router).  Open Airport Utility on your Mac or other computer and accept all of the recommendations.  After confirming that it works, insert your desired administrative and WiFi passwords.
Then connect the extender to AC power.  As before, open Airport Utility on your Mac or other computer and accept all of the recommendations.  No need to add password info.
Do not expect the Airport to respond instantly to the configuration commands.  BE PATIENT!

  • How to change channel on 5GHz on new (2012) Airport Express when connecting to en excsiting network?

Airport Express only provides channel 100 automatically when configuring it to connect to an excisting wireless network at 5GHz. This is out of range for most routers, which typicaly provieds channels 36 through 48 for connecting 5GHz devices.Only when you configure the Airport Express to establish a new wireless network it allows you to change channels manually. This is really weird. I have severeal Airport Express units (older model) around my house for streaming music, and they work just fine on 2.4 GHz, and so does the new (2012) one, but I bought it specifically to use 5GHz in a corner of my house with interference from surrounding 2.4 GHz networks, so I am really disappointed with this product. There should and must be a way to connect it to an excisting 5GHz network, but how to get the channel right in this cnfiguration mode?

When you extend wireless you cannot switch channels.. The Express is locked to the channel used by the Extreme.. there is no choice about this.
Reboot the extreme .. wait a minute and then reboot the express.. Channels will be tested on reboot to pick the best.. there is nothing much else you can do.
