Airport Express Router - Black Magic, Vodoo or just plain poor design

My setup is TP Link modem in bridge mode connected to airport extreme to provide DHCP. All clients connected with no problems except the airport express n base station connected as client for airtunes.
The airport express will connect fine initially with green lights and all. It will then decide to drop off and remains in solid amber light. Tried soft, hard and factory resets but Airport Utility won't pick it up. I have google around, read all the forum and blogs and tried everything suggested for the last 3 months or so. The airport express will not broadcast its own wireless network and no matter what I tried, I can't get Airport Utility to recognise it so I can reconfigure it. Last night out of frustration, I pick up the airport express base station and gave it several wack on the palm of my hand and it came to live. It finally braodcast its default wireless. I decided to leave it on overnight to see if it will continue to broadcast in the morning. Yes, it's now configured in client mode to join my wireless network and playing music from my iphone to my powered speakers for several hours now.
So if anyone has a solid amber light on your stubborn airport express, you might want to give it a spanking. Not sure if the power cabling inside was blocking the transmitter or antennae and the wacking might moved things around (I could hear something was loose inside).

Hi Tesserax,
I have been playing music without missing beat for around 10 hours and decided to move the AX to its permanent location. But guess what? It exhibit its solid amber light again and cannot be found through airport utility. Unplug it, gave it a few whack and it works again. Now up and running without dropout. Guess I have to leave it there and not move it again.
You might be right though that I might have a defective unit but can be made to function through whacking it.

  • I want to set up my Apple Airport Express router to gain access to Unblockus. How do I do that?

Does anyone know how to set up the Airport Express router to gain access to Unblockus.
Unblockus has provided me the Preferred and Alternate DNS server numbers. I just dont
know how to configure the Airport Express router to accomodate this DNS address.
Also I dont want to negate the DNS address I already use to gain access to my internet service
    provider, when I do this.
    Help....

    I just dont
know how to configure the Airport Express router to accomodate this DNS address
Caution......This will overwrite any existing values that you have in the DNS Server boxes. There is no way to keep your existing DNS numbers if you enter new DNS numbers.
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
    Click on the AirPort Express
    Click Manual Setup
Click the Internet icon at the top of the AirPort Utility window
    Click the TCP/IP tab
Enter the Primary and Secondary DNS numbers in the DNS Server boxes
Click Update to save the new settings

  • Can I use an ethernet switch to add a "pogoplug" device to my Airport express router? Or do I need a different router?

I have an airport express router and decided to get a "pogoplug device" (cloud service to store files etc.). It requires to be connected to router per ethernet but I realized too late there is only one ethernet connection in the router. A friend suggested I get an ethernet switch but it still doesn't work...Do I need a new router?

Then, unfortunately, no as the single Ethernet port of the AX needs to be connected to the Ethernet port of your Broadband modem.
One option is to get another AX, and then, configure it as a wireless Ethernet bridge. It would connect to the first AX by wireless, and then, you can connect the PogoPlug to it.

I have been going crazy trying to find a way to import the XML files to fix the digitized look Adobe capture gave my footage. Someone help me
These are not XML from Final Cut. They are files saved from Media Express, a Black magic design program used for Capturing.
    THANK YOU.

Wouldn't it be more appropriate to open the actual media files captured with the program?

  • Why doesn't my airport express router issue proper DNS server address to DHCP clients?

I have an Airport express router (version 7.6.4).  It was configured to connect to internet via a cable modem, acting as a router with NAT. This means it obtians WAN address from cable modem, and in LAN it assumes IP address 10.0.1.1 as a gateway, and issue IP address to my 4-5 wireless clients (MBA, iPads, PCs) vi DHCP.
However I recently encounter an issue, that the router no longer issues DNS server address obtained from Cable Modem(206.x.x.x) but instead tell every DHCP client to use router ip address (10.0.1.1) as DNS server. I was pretty sure before Dec 2013 it is issueing (206.x.x.x) to all DHCP clients.
Apparently now the Airport express is acting as a DNS server or as a DNS cache. This works sporadically and very often result in long DNS look up or DNS look up failure.
Is this a bug or is it supposed to do so?  Any configuration can turn it off so Airport express will issue Cable modem obtained DNS server to DHCP clients?
My network otherwise works fine. for some of the Clients (e.g. one MBA) I configured DNS for it mannually and it's internet is working very smoothly.

But this will be a problem for my ipad and iphone that uses wifi.
These devices either allow full DHCP. If you need to mannually enter DNS server, you will need to turn entire IP configuration to mannual and that will be a problem for me.

Per chance is your AirPort Express Base Station (AX) an 802.11g model? If so, that is why you are getting this error message from the AirPort Utility running on the iPad. You would need to use either version 5.6 or 5.6.1 running on a Mac or a PC to administer this base station.

    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
Generally someone only has the choice of one or two broadband ISPs. If service from Comcast is reliable, I'd go with them if they can supply you with a "dumb" (i.e., no router functionality) modem. That should make setup of an AirPort Extreme very simple.
Reliability is the most important thing. In theory you only need configure things once, but you're dependent on reliability every day.
By the way, is there a reason you posted your message in the section for "AirPort for Windows"?

  • My iPod Touch was not connecting to my Airport Express router (which was "extending" a network as a WDS repeater) -- SOLVED!

My problem was this. I have a large apartment with concrete walls, so just one wireless router would not work. I used apple Airport routers and used one of them (an airport extreme) to create my wireless network, and a number of other ones -- airport expresses -- to "extend" the network.
That's all great, but I found that a couple of my devices -- mainly my iPod Touch -- would refuse to connect to the repeater airport express routers -- it only wanted to connect to the main Airport Extreme router, not the satellite guys.
Finally I solved the problem.  It had to do with how the wireless network's configuration for "Radio" setting was set regarding 802/11 b/g, and the dual-band ability of the Extreme. Below is the description of how I fixed it.
    ======SOLUTION THAT I POSTED======
I've pretty much solved this problem. I do not FULLY understand why, but now I can have my iPod touch (and I am hoping my kindle) attach correctly to the satellite/repeater airport express.  Here is what I did:
I did two configuration changes to my central hub airport extreme router (i.e., the one that my other routers were merely configured to "extend.")  I realize now that these are both configurations that must be done at that central router, and the repeater routers then simply mimic or reflect accordingly.
-- First, I used the most recent Airport Utility (v6.0) and clicked on my main router (which, crucially, is an airport extreme that has dual band 802.11, both 2.4ghz and 5ghz.)
-- In the airport utility, I clicked on that Extreme router and then in its funky popup window, clicked Edit.
-- Clicked the tab called Wireless.
-- Clicked on Wireless Options button.
-- the first config change I made on that page was to change the Radio Mode setting to "802.11a/n - 802.11 b/g."
What nobody really tells you is that that hyphenated choice means that the 5GHz band will use the first of those two (namely, a and n, in other words the strong modern N standard will be used on this band ONLY) ... while the 2.4GHZ band will use only the second of those two, b/g, in other words, the devices that only can use that older weaker standard.
So, it's kind of a segregation. I'm telling it "No, don't let the 2.4 ghz band try to handle traffic using N. That band will just take care of the old crappy clients."
-- the second config change that I made on that page was to check the check box to make a totally separate wireless network name for the 5GHZ band.  Further segregating things.  When I tried my solution without this additional step, my problem did not fix itself, though I don't fully see why.
As I said, a few questions remain in my head, but the darn thing works, so I'm happy. Among many other questions... are those airport expresses dual-band too? I didn't think they were but somehow they are repeating this dual-band strategy?  Whatever. it works.
BY THE WAY -- I recommend using the Apple question/answer board on StackExchange to get Apple-related answers. It is at http://apple.stackexchange.com/

To demonstrate, here's a screenshot from the Airport Utility on the iPod Touch in close proximity to the Express, still connected to the Extreme :

  • Slingbox Solo no longer working with new Airport Express router

Help! I'm at the end of my tether trying to get my Slingbox to communicate with the new Airport Express I've just bought. Here's the deal...Obviously, as AEXP only has one Ethernet Port (under advisement) I had to go and buy a 5 port Ethernet switch. Cable modem connects to 1 port of the switch. AEXP connects to another port. Slingbox connects to 3rd port. Network light on Slingbox flashes incessantly and Slingplayer software tells me to makes sure the "Network Router the Slingbox is connected to has the correct Port Forwarding settings."
I have tried (via google) but cannot make sense of this. There should be no firewall obstacles as i am using MAC filtering and have added the MAC address of the slingbox to the AEXP settings. I know that Slingbox does work as it worked fine before with my Belkin router. Please can anyone help? I have called slingbox for ages and they are unable to help. Here's hoping someone here has brains and the patience i don't have! Kind Regards.

identitytheft, Welcome to the discussion area!
Sorry but you need to replace the Ethernet switch with a router which has more than one Ethernet port.
Since the AirPort Express (AX) only has a single Ethernet port it can not properly share an IP address to Ethernet clients.

  • Airport Express + Router

This is really two questions in one.
I have just moved away from home and am looking at getting broadband. I already have a airport express.
Until I get broadband, I have just connect the airport express to my G4 tower, by ethernet, and created a network, from the airport express, in the hope I would be able to file share between the two. The ibook gets a IP from the airport express but the tower, assigns it self a IP and I can't file share between, either by using the network browser from finder, or connect to server. Is this possible. It is worth nothing that itunes, on both computers see's the airport express speakers/airtunes.
This really leads onto my main question.
If/When I go down the getting broadband, I can be given a one port router/moden, from someone who doesn't need it any more.
My plan is to get a switch, connect the router/moden, G4 tower, and airport express all to the switch. Will I be able to file share bewteen the two macs, and get the intenet on both, or will I have to go and buy a wireless router?
    Any help would be great.

That is what I thought. The AX alone will not do the job since it only has a single Ethernet port.
You will need to configure you setup like this:
    broadband<-> router<-> switch <-+->AX
    ................................|->G4
Do you need the AX for music streaming? If not, you can use any inexpensive wireless router and configure everything like this:
    broadband<-> wireless router <-->G4
If you need wireless printing, use the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) instead of the AX. You would configure everything like this:
    broadband<->[WAN] AEBS [LAN]<-->G4

  • Airport Express (802.11g) magically turned into (802.11n)

I recently notice that my older Airport Express 802.11.g is now showing as a 802.11n, and i can set it to 5ghz and connect everything shows as 802.11n.
I wonder what the cause of this miraculous upgrade, I don't think it was this 7.6 firmware, perhaps the previous.  Anyone else notice this, I'm not complaining, just curious that there was no mention of it I could find anywhere on the net.
    Thanks

How bizzare, maybe they were shipping it as the "g" with reduced functionality until they could make up new packaging or something, and some recent firmeware update switched it over, I think I actually have the box it came in somewhere......
Well, nother reason I love Apple, the magic upgrade.
    Thanks for your response....

  • My new AirPort Express router will not stop blinking

I just bought a new AirPort Express.  With the help of Time Warner, he gave me a new Modem and hooked everything together which included  connecting router, modem to my husband's Windows PC.  Now, the PC works great.  My Apple IMac and Apple IPad work great and get the Wi-Fi very nicely.  However, the AirPort Express unit continues to blink amber/orange and I don't think that is right.  Should I do something or just leave it alone since everything is working great and I don't want to mess around the wires and cause things to  stop working.  Any help will be appreciated.  Thanks.

  • Can't connect Airport Express to my main wireless network, just my guest account.

I go to join my Airport Express to my wireless network so I can play music from Itunes to my sound system in my living room.  That is all I want to use it for at this point.  I pull up a list of the networks available, and my guest network shows up on the list, but my main network, which all my computers and Iphone is connected to, isn't on there.  I have a Linksys E3000 with a guest account set up trhough it.  Windows 7.  I called tech support and they said something about a hidden setting.  I went and checked and couldn't find anything about this.  Also, when people come over they can access my main wireless account with my password.

Hi JWHITHAM and welcome to the forums!
Have you tried manually adding your wireless network to the iPod touch? Mine does the same too sometimes and I just add it manually. So far it works.

  • Airport Express/Router Connection - Help Needed!

I was given an Airport Express for Christmas to use to beam my iTunes from my iMac to a pair of powered speakers in a different room. I was using the AE in conjunction with a Netgear wireless router.
It was a pig to set up but now I wish to change everything and I might need help.
I want to connect my router to the iMac by ethernet cable - the 2 bits of equipment are only 2 feet apart! Thus the AE will be the only piece of kit connected wirelessly to the router.
I would like to delete the present connection of AE to router and start again.
Is there anything I need to know about changing my router to Mac connection from wireless to wired and reinstalling my wireless connection from router to AE?

  • Diffilcuty being able to connect to new Airport Express router

I recently purchased a new apple express router, unfortunatley when I disconnect the existing router, which happens to be a Linksys, I am unable to connect.  If I re-connect to the Linksys, the connection takes place.  Additionally, once I plug inthe charger, the light turns green for 2 seconds and then starts to blink. Any suggestions
I have researched all of my connections and they are functioning

    Hello there Shirley,
Here is an article outlining what the blinking Amber light could be called Wi-Fi base station: Understanding and resolving a blinking amber status light found here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1589.
    Resolution
Here are some of the more common reasons that the status light may blink amber:
The Wi-Fi base station has not yet been configured because it is new.
The Wi-Fi base station has been reset.
A new firmware update is available for the Wi-Fi base station.
No IP address is available for the Wi-Fi base station.
A Wi-Fi base station in Extended Mode is out-of-network Wi-Fi range of a primary Wi-Fi base station.
The WAN Ethernet cable is unplugged from the Wi-Fi base station.
The Wi-Fi base station lacks a path to the Internet (or local router).
Internet access may be temporarily unavailable from your Internet Service Provider (ISP).
Your Time Capsule has detected that the internal hard drive has reported a SMART error, and is failing (This requires firmware 7.5.2, and AirPort Utility 5.5.2).
A persistent, blinking, amber status light indicates that your Wi-Fi base station may require your attention.
How to resolve a blinking amber status light alert
Launch AirPort Utility to determine why your Wi-Fi base station status light is blinking amber.
Apple recommends that you use AirPort Utility 5.5.2 for Mac, AirPort Utility 5.5.2 for Windows, or a newer version of AirPort Utility if one is available.
AirPort Utility 5.2 or later opens automatically if your Wi-Fi base station requires your attention. You may also choose to launch AirPort Utility at any time.
Do not use any version of AirPort Utility earlier than 5.0.
In Mac OS X, AirPort Utility is located in the Applications > Utilities folder.
In Microsoft Windows, AirPort Utility can be located by clicking Start > All Programs > AirPort.
Note: You may also locate and download the latest Wi-Fi base station firmware and software by clicking here.
In the AirPort Utility window, locate your Wi-Fi base station and double-click on it to open the Summary window. Note: If you have more than one Wi-Fi base station, double-click on the icon for the Wi-Fi base station that has the amber circle next to it.
When the Summary window appears, double-click the amber circle to the right of Wi-Fi base station Status to open the Status window.
The Status window lists any conditions that require your attention. Respond to each item until there are no more items listed.
Important: You must reset the Wi-Fi base station using the reset switch to re-enable checking for the conditions you ignored.
Eliminating the blinking, amber status light may require making changes to a specific setting, or putting a checkmark in the "Ignore" checkbox beside any option you don't wish to change. A checkmark simply tells the AirPort that you are aware of the issue and you have chosen to ignore it. For example, you may wish to leave your AirPort open without a password so that anyone can join your wireless network.
Click Update to apply your changes (the Wi-Fi base station will restart).
After the Wi-Fi base station has restarted, the status light should be green and not blinking. If the status light stays amber in color and blinks after the Wi-Fi base station restarts, you may repeat the steps above.
    All the very best,
    Sterling
