Airport express shows in Sys Pref but cannot select it

My Airport Express shows in bold as a devise in System Preferences > Sounds> Output, but when I click on it, it will not select, going back to highlight internal speakers.
I can select my Airport Express in iTunes, and it works but I cannot output sound to it in other programs, ie podcasts, online videos, DVDs. I could do this before I upgraded to Mtn Lion.
Running OS X 10.8.2, MacBook Pro 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB memory.
Thanks,
3pin

AirPort Utility for the iPhone, iPad, etc does not support the older version of the AirPort Express that you have.
Try installing AirPort Utility on the Lenovo laptop to see if you can configure the AirPort Express that way.
If the laptop runs XP SP3 or Vista SP2.....use AirPort Utility 5.5.3 for Windows - Support - Apple
Windows 7....use AirPort Utility 5.6.1 for Windows 7 - Support - Apple
Remember that the SB5101 modem must be fully reset before it will associate correctly with the AirPort Express. That means pressing the reset button on the back of the modem (if present) and powering off the modem for at least 30 minutes, then connecting it to the AirPort.

  • HT1515 Airport Express indicates it isworking properly - but cannot connect to the internet

I have connected Airport Express to my cable company router via ethernet.  Both the router and Airport Express (solid green light) indicate they are working properly.  When I connect my laptop directly to the cable router, I can access the network. However, I cannot connect to to the Internet wirelessly from my laptop when I connect Airport Express to the cable router.  I get a no internet connection error.  When I try to diagnose and repair the problem, the network settings cannot be fixed.  What should I do?

A flashing amber light indicates that the AirPort Express (AX) is not connected to either a network or the Internet.
How is your AX connected physically?
Is it: DSL/Cable modem > (Ethernet cable) > AX > (wireless) > Mac?
Did you run the AirPort Setup Assistant?

  • I finally got my airport express showing a green light, but

How  can I tell if the wireless signal that I now get on my iPad, far removed from the Airport Extreme, is really coming from the airport express?
    Thanks

OK, thanks. Give this a try:
The first order of business is to make sure that the AirPort Extreme is configured correctly for the extension. Keep the AirPort Express (AX) powered off for now.
Open Utility -Select the AirPort Extreme - Click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
Make sure that there is a check mark next to "Allow this network to be extended"
Jot down the name of the AirPort Extreme wireless network and the exact security setting (it's probably WPA2 Personal) that is in effect.
Click Update to save any changes
Move the AirPort Express near your computer and the AirPort Extreme
Perform a Factory Default Reset on the AirPort Express (AX) as follows:
Hold in the reset button and keep holding the reset button in for another 10-12 seconds while you plug the AX in to power
Release the reset button and give the AX about 40-45 seconds to restart, at which time the amber light will be blinking slowly
Make sure that you are logged on the AX network, which will have a name like Apple Network xxxxxx. There is no password. Alternately, if you have a spare Ethernet cable handy, you can connect it from your Mac to the AX and then disconnect it after you have updated the settings.
Open AirPort Utility -Select the AX -  Click Manual Setup
Click the Base Station tab below the row of icons to name your device, assign a device password and adjust Time Zone settings
    Click the Wireless tab
Wireless Mode = Extend a wireless network
Wireless Network Name = Exact same name as your AirPort Extreme network
Enter a check mark next to "Allow wireless clients"
Wireless Security = Exact same setting as the AirPort Extreme wireless network
Wireless Password = Same password as the AirPort Extreme wireless network
    Confirm Password
    Click Update to save settings
As soon as you see the message that the settings have been stored, close AirPort Utility
Wait 40-45 seconds for the AX to restart and you should have a green light
Now locate the AX approximately 1/2 to 2/3 the distance between the AirPort Extreme and the area that needs more wireless coverage. Minimize obstructions in the signal path as much as possible for best results.

  • Airport Express shows green light but NO Internet

I am using a Macbook Pro and an Airport Express for my Wi-Fi.
I have recently changed my Internet Service Provider. The new ISP provided me with the following information:
    1.IP address: 172.100.11.17
    2. Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
    3. Default Gateway:172.100.11.1
    4. Preferred DNS: 172.16.0.1
    5. Alternate DNS: 8.8.8.8
My ISP told me to enter this information manually unlike my previous ISP who used DHCP.
I entered this information by going to system preferences >> Network >> Advanced  >> TCP/IP >> Configure IPv4: Using Manually. I also entered the preferred and alternate DNS information under DNS servers in DNS tab.
I applied these settings and the airport express shows solid green light but gives NO access to internet.
I have also tried connecting the Ethernet cable directly to the computer, which also shows connected but gives NO access to Internet.
I borrowed another router from my friend (not apple) and entered the same settings given by my new ISP and boom !!! I got connected to the internet  only through wirelessly BUT no connection again using the ethernet.
So I am facing the following problem in Mac OS X (10.7.5)
    using
    Airport Express: NO internet
    Ethernet: NO internet
Other Router(non-apple): Internet works using Wi-fi
    Ethernet: NO internet
I do not know if something is blocking the connection or what is happening. I have created new locations (under network) and deleted the old existing one's but nothing seems to help. I also did a hard reset of my Airport Express but nothing seems to help.
    Please help me !!!

I must be doing something wrong with entering settings in Airport Express. The ISP technician is as clueless as me and had even did some changes under Wi-Fi in the network section on my macbook pro. I dont know if it is causing these problems. I have a few questions, please help.
Q1. While entering the ISP provided details using Airport Utility, which of these should I choose: A. Static B. DHCP C. PPPoE ?
Q2. Should my MAC address in the Airport Utility be set to configure manually or automatically ?
Q3. What should be my Wi-Fi settings in my computer ?. I mean in system preferences under network, should my TCP/IP set as DHCP or manually ? Under hardware tab, there is an option to select MAC address as either Automatically or Manually. What should it be ?

  • Airport Express shows constant amber

My Airport Express shows a constant amber. As soon as I plug it in it show's green for about a second and then moves to a solid amber, there's no flashing and it doesn't appear to be searching.
I've tried all the reset options including the factory default where you keep the reset button pressed while you plug it in but all I get is the Amber.
Am I doing something wrong? It is dead??

Temporarily connect your Mac via Ethernet directly to the AX. Then you can configure the AX. You may also need to do a hard reset of the AX.
Shouldn't the AX start flashing amber as soon as it's turned on as it's searching for a computer?
The flashing amber indicates the AX hasn't found an Internet connection. It has nothing to do with connecting to any computers.

  • Have installed Airport express using windows vista, unit blinks green, selected the speakers from itunes but get no sound at all, even if I put a headphone in the airport express. Pls advise

Have installed Airport express using windows vista, unit blinks green, selected the speakers from itunes but get no sound at all, even if I put a headphone in the airport express. Pls advise

If the AX is working properly, it should not show up in your list of available networks (since it is "joined" to your router). Have you unplugged and replugged your AX? Unplugged and, after a minute, replugged your router? Do you have MAC address filtering enabled on your router? (if so, disable it to see if the AX works ... it will broadcast its MAC address to the router, and you can add it.) Is your firewall turned on? Turn it off and see if you can access Airtunes. You will have to open a port in your firewall if that is the case.
The AX should have the same network name as your router the wireless tab. When it shows up, what name is it broadcasting?

  • My Apple Airport Express is blinking Amber and I cannot find it with the utility

My Apple Airport Express is blinking Amber and I cannot find it with the utility

Hi, had the same problem -
    1) Connected AE to Time Capsule with Ethernet cable - Configured it  - All worked fine
    2) Removed Ethernet cable between AE og TC - All worked fine
    3) Unpluged my AE from the socket outlet (power off) and pluged it inn where its supposed to be (2m from my Time Capsule)
    4) Now Airport Utility do not find me AE (after all i reconfigured through the Etheret calbe) ????
    A) Seems that Airport Utility are not able to "see" any wireless AE, only configurable by Ethernet Cable.
    B) Seems that AE are not able to reconnect to configured network after a power loss.
This is a little bit ****** - older airport utility had none of the problems (A and B)

  • Airport Express Shows in WAN, but not Wireless

I have an old Airport Express and a Time Machine (and Powerbook 13" 2011 model ... OSX 10.8.2). I have been using the TM fine for quite some time now. I used to use the AE, but packed it away for the last two years. Having just gotten a new stereo, I would like to play music via the AE again, as I used to.
However now I cannot get the AE to show up in Airport Utility. If I plug it in by Ethernet, it shows up fine and plays music. But the moment I unplug the Ethernet, I lose connection. I have tried to configure as Extend a Network and Join a Network, and the same thing happens with both ... music plays fine with plugged in, but cannot get a signal with wireless. AE does not show up at all on AU on wireless. Resetting the AE has no effect. The AE light is solid green the whole time.
I suspect I am doing something really basically wrong and dumb, but cannot figure it out at all. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    ok here's an update.
now my airport express turns to green automatically (only in my room)
it will still be blinking amber anywhere else
so the problem is still not solved.

  • Airport express showing green but no internet connection

I have a new airport express (2013) connected to a motorola canopy point to multipoint wireless broadband system.
The express is in bridge mode and is using 8.8.4.4 and 208.67.222.222 as the DNS servers.
The aiport is showing a green light consistetly. However, the internet connection of devices on the network drops intermittently. Airport utility shows a yellow indicator and "disconnected".
Sometime the connection reappears quickly. Other times a restart in necessary.
It does not happen simulatnaesouly for every device. Some can have a connection while others do not. As I write this, my MB Air has an internet connection but my iPhone does not.
    Fixes I have tried:
Powering down and powering back up begining with the modem and then the base station.
    Changing base station channel
    Turning off wireless printer
Renewing DHCP lease on base station
Renewing DHCP lease on individual units
I see others with this problem but the fixes seem random. I was thinking it is a DNS issue but... the error reads "disconnected" not DNS issue.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

The issues seems to be DNS related.
When the internetconnection drops, the airport utility indicator switches to yellow, I can still get websites to reslive by using their IP addresses in place of the URL. E.g. http://173.194.70.101 for google.
But I can make neither heads nor tails of why this happens or when...
The one thing I think I am noticing but does not make any sense is that when I use the IP instead of the URL, it forces the connection back on.

  • Airport Express Stopped Connecting to Internet, but Computer Says It Is

    Hi,
I usually can find answers on these forums, through FAQs and troubleshooting, but this one's got me stumped. I've got an Airport Express Base Station. It worked great and then one day - it stopped working. Literally, I was online until about 12:30am, went to bed, and then at 10:00am the next morning all was lost. In the airport status in the menu bar, both my laptop (running 10.4.11) and my husband's (running 10.5.x - not sure which)show the base station is connected and working. In Internet Connect, it says the base station is working. But I cannot connect through Firefox, Safari or iChat. I know its not the cable modem because right now I'm directly connected through the ethernet line (and obviously it works since I'm on this discussion board). I've rebooted, my machine, the Airport Express, the cable modem about 20 times, in all different sequences, with the same results. I tried troubleshooting through Network System Preferences and still, a no-go. The funny thing is, if I plug in the printer and the ethernet line to the Airport Express, I can't connect to the internet but can print just fine. I've also tried to reboot the base station to Factory Settings and it doesn't seem to be doing that (plug it in while putting a paperclip in the reset button). Is it broken? Did it fry inside? Anyone have any suggestions? Help!

Well, to anyone else that may have had this problem, I was able to reset the base station to its factory settings. Turns out I wasn't holding the reset button down long enough (duh). Went through Airport Setup Assistant and everything's working fine now. Phew!

  • Airport express works with windows xp but not OS Tiger

    Hi all
    I’m a troubled man.
I have recently bought a new Mac pro along with an airport express. I am a first time user of Mac’s.
    Here is my problem.
I use a DSL modem and my airport express is connected with the LED indicator in solid green. When I try to connect using my user name and password the “searching for POPPE sever appears at the top of my screen.” And after a few seconds “could not find POPPE server. This happens all the time. I tried to get air tunes working but itunes could not detect my airport express.
Now since I’m an engineer I needed to run auto cad on my Mac so I downloaded Bootcamp, partitioned my Macpro hard drive and installed windows XP on my Mac book pro and to my surprise windows xp found my airport and connected to the server straight away. So I experimented and download the xp version of itunes and what do you know the xp version of itunes detected my airport express and everthing worked fine for Windows! This suggests to me that the problem lies with the mac software as the airport express is working fine. Whats going on! I do not understand.
When I go back to tiger it sees my airport but cannot connect. I run the airport assistant but it cannot detect my airport. I run the utility airport program but it cannot see my airport express. I go back to windows XP everything works fine???????
If you can come up with a solution to this strange problem I would be very grateful.
    Thanks

The user name and password may be just fine but the dialer software for OS X may be quirky to the point where it doesn't work with your modem through an Airport connection. My recommendation is to try uninstalling the DSL dialing software from the computer and setting up the Express to do the dialing for you. Your computer connection then becomes straight Ethernet.
If that doesn't work, have you checked to see if there's a newer version of the OS X dialing software available?
