Airport Express Signal Weakness after Firmware 7.5.2 upgrade

I was trying to update my firmware on my Samsung Blu-Ray player b/c the menu was faulty, then I noticed it was not detecting my wireless network from my Airport Express that was clearly visible to my iPad and Mac Book Pro. So I went ahead and also updated my firmware for the Airport Express at the same time to 7.5.2 because it kept telling me it was needed.
Now with the new firmware, my wireless network is often not detected by my iPad and MacBook Pro if they are downstairs and 1 room over and is very slow when they do connect. I used AirRadar to sense if it was maybe getting some noise from another neighbor's network, or on the same channel, and neither was the case. I tried changing channels just in case to 8, but still only 35-39% strength downstairs or 25 feet away (but 95% in same room). I also tried changing to broadcasting at only 2.4 Ghz and 5 Ghz and neither seemed to work better.
So my question is- could the new firmware decrease signal strength? Can I go back to my old one? If so, I tried changing firmware versions but it won't allow me to select it as a drop down.
Any other ideas? The iPad used to be so fast. Now we can't use any web-based apps downstairs.

I found the same after a recent upgrade. After trying different things, I reverted to the previous software and all was fine. I lost 50% of my signal with the new upgrade, hardly an improvement. I wish you well.

  • AirPort Express constantly restarting after firmware upgrade

    Hello,
I have an AirPort Express that extends a wireless network created by a Time Capsule. They are identified by AirPort Utility 5.6 as "AirPort Express 802.11n" and "Time Capsule 802.11n (4th Generation)". The AirPort Express has worked properly for several years, but after updating the firmware to 7.6.1 a few weeks ago, it regurlaly hangs for a while, but works fine again for hours or days in between (so it isn't broken). The Time Capsule was upgraded to 7.6.1 at the same time and works without problems.
When the AirPort Express hangs, it's restarting itself all the time: the status light is solid amber for about a minute (starting up), then flashes two times amber (connecting), becomes green (ok) for half a second, and then solid amber again (restarting). This cyclic restarting can last for hours. Very strange behavior... During such cyclic restarting, it is on so shortly that it never shows up in AirPort Utility and it is impossible to connect and read the log file.
A factory default reset is possible and allows to configure it with AirPort Utility. But after reconfiguring, the AirPort Express entrers the cyclic restarting again. The same happens when configuring to join (instead of extend) the wireless network. After trying to factory-reset and reconfigure several times and finally letting it in its cyclic restarting for a while, it suddenly comes back on and will work again for several hours or even days (until the problem comes back again).
My next try will be to revert to firmware 7.6 (AirPort Utility 5.6 > Base Station > Upoad Firmware...). Any other ideas around?
    P.S.
I didn't find several (advanced) functionalities of the original AirPort Utility (5.6) in the new version (6.x): for example "Upload Firmware", "Logs and Statistics", "Use dynamic global hostname", "Disconnect disk users", etc. I hope 5.6 will be available and maintained for a while...

At the next hang of the AirPort Express and after a factory reset, I tried to revert to firmware 7.6 (AirPort Utility 5.6 > Base Station > Upoad Firmware… > select firmware from a list of available versions). After a while, it failed with the following error message:
An error occurred while updating the firmware.
Make sure your Apple Wi-Fi base station is plugged in and in range of your computer or connected via Ethernet and try again. (-1)
The Airport express was hanging again. After another factory reset, the menu item Upload Firmware… didn't show available firmware versions anymore, but asked to open a file in a finder pane. Is this expected behaviour?
The event log of the Time Capsule shows the following entries during the cyclic restarting of the AirPort Express (which doesn't give me a clue about the cause of my problem):

  • AirPort Express has weak signal while playing music from Iphone, intermittent play

AirPort Express has weak signal while playing music from Iphone, intermittent play

I'm having the same problem, even more:
    - Watching movies over AppleTV: switches off every 20min (sleep mode).
    - Listening to iTunes music ofer AirPlay: the same.
    - A whole confusion with switching airplay destinations (AppleTV, AirportExpress) over iPhone remote app. Sometimes remote cannot find my library anymore
    - Before, I was able to multitask: stream a DVD to AppleTV, using airplay mirroring, and simultaneously stream music from iTunes on the same computer, over the iTunes airplay selector, to loudspeakers connected to AirportExpress. No longer possible.
I've grown a big Apple fan in short time, proudly living  what for others is the future (your media stored anyhwere, controlled from anywhere, played anywhere, stop thinking in terms of devices). And, I've learnt to savour the  moments when you can look your Microsoft friends deep in the eyes and say: "The big difference with Apple  - it just works"...
At the moment, I'm trying not to invite my friends.

  • Airport express shuts down after december update firmware

can anyone advise me on AEXpress which shuts down very soon after powering up, all since i upgraded firmware earlier in december? this is a replacement model which i got new in summer 2010...out of warranty now. it was fine on XP as client mode connecting wirelessly to Linksys WRT160N router; since upgrade, the airport express shows green light for 2 seconds; then amber for 1 minute; then no light at all. sometimes i plug it in and no lights appear at all. i doubt it's hardware as it followed the software update immediately. Should I somehow try to reinstall the previous software? but don't know how to do that since it won't stay powered on and doesn't show on airport utility. thanks, pdoyle

Your best option is going to be to try to perform a Factory Default Reset on the AirPort Express to see if that will clear up the difficulties. If this is successful, you could rollback the firmware to an earlier version or reconfigure the device again with the current version of firmware.
o Power down the Express for at least 20 minutes
o Hold in the reset button and keep holding the reset button in as you plug the Express back in to power
o Keep holding the reset button until you see the amber light blink more quickly. Hold another 3-4 seconds when you see this and release the reset button.
With luck, the Express has now been returned to default settings so you can try to reconfigure it again.
If you try the Factory Default Reset a few times and the Express is still having difficulties, I'm afraid there's been an internal failure within the device and it will need to be replaced.

  • Weak Airport Express Signal

    Hi,
My computer is only 5 feet away from my airport express, yet my connection is very weak (two bars at most).
How can I determine whether the problem is with my card or with Airport?
    Cheers

Those sound like good numbers. You could still be having an interference problem, though. Have you tried using a channel as different as possible from your neighbors'? A difference >= 3 is often recommended.
My neighbor' networks tend to appear and disappear. You might keep an eye on iStumbler's window, hoping to see whether your connection improves when a particular one shuts down. That could provide a helpful clue.
Have you made any recent changes in your home, such as a new heat source near your AX or new source of EMI?
I see you're using an 802.11b/g AX. If you're running the V6.3 firmware on it, I doubt that's the problem because I use the same. Furthermore, I don't believe the firmware for the b/g has been changed in quite awhile.

  • Airport Express Signal very weak

I have added an additional express to help boost my signal which weakens dramatically as I leave my office. We have a linksys system that my sister brought from her old apartment - that gives a great signal - but 2 Express and almost no signal. The utility can see both - but no signal.
Does anyone have any ideas? This is the only Apple function that feels just like a PC application - frustrating!

Are you using one Airport Express as a Base Station, and the second Airport Express to "extend" the range of that Base Station? When you configured the second Airport Express with the Airport Setup Assistant, did you select the option to configure the second Airport Express as a new base station that "extends" the range of the wireless network of the Airport Express acting as your network's base station?

  • Will extending a wireless network using airport express cause weaker signal?

Hoping someone can advise on the following please....
I have installed an Airport Express to extend my wireless network and have confirmed with Apple tech support that it's connected and configured properly. I'm using an Airport Extreme base station as a wireless router.
The AX does not seem to be extending the signal range at all, and since the setup the signal strenght from the Extreme base station seems to be at half previous strengh.
Has anyone experienced this please and, if so, what's the fix?
    Any replies gratefully received.
    Regards

Let's check the settings on your Express. Temporarily, move it to the same room or an adjacent room to the Extreme and power it back up.
Open AirPort Utility - select the Express - Click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the icons and make sure that your settings look like this:
Wireless Mode = Extend a wireless network
Wireless Network Name = Same name as the Extreme wireless network
Check mark entered next to Allow wireless clients
Wireless Security = Same setting as the Extreme network
Wireless Password = Same password as the Extreme network
    Confirm Password
Update to save settings, wait for green light.
Then move the Express another room or two further away from the Extreme....and restart both the Extreme and the Express. Then perform the BSSID test again.

  • Airport Express signal fine but no internet connection

We have been using an Airport Express for wireless Internet access and recently are unable to connect to the Internet. We use a Comcast cable modem, through a Linksys router, to the Airport Express. We can connect by network cable to the router and access the Internet, but are unable to connect wirelessly. We are getting a signal from the Airport Express (the light is green), but no Internet connectivity. We have restarted and done a hard reset (holding the reset button while plugging the Airport Express in) of the Airport Express, but it did not seem to help. The hard reset did not result in resetting the settings, so perhaps there is another way to reset it or perhaps there is another problem.
    Has anyone had similar problems?

I tried power cycling the cable modem, downloading new firmware (why didn't Software Update tell me about this?), deleting the DNS servers, hard reset of AirPort Express, factory reset of AirPort Express, fiddling with AirPort Admin Utility, fiddling with AirPort Setup, all of the above in different order and different combinations, and it still would not work.
Power cycling the cable modem was one of the first things I did, and that resulted in getting Internet connection through the cable modem onto the ethernet cable; just no Internet through AirPort. Finally, after a factory reset of the AirPort Express did not help, I decided to power cycle the cable modem again, even though I had already just confirmed again that I was getting the Internet through the ethernet cable. Once the cable modem finished the power cycle, it finally worked! I was back on the Internet via AirPort!
I'm not exactly sure which solution fixed it for me, but I suspect that it didn't work at first because I did not power cycle the cable modem afterwards. In other words, if after changing AirPort settings you still are not connected to the Internet, try power cycling the cable modem. Do this every time for each change you make to the AirPort settings.
The other thing I learned is that unplugging the cable modem from the wall power outlet or turning off the power strip will NOT power cycle the cable modem properly. Instead, you must remove the power cord from the cable modem. I tried all three of these methods and for whatever reason, the only time it worked was by removing the power cord.

  • Airport Express is weak extending my network

I have a 1 year old Airport Extreme (n) and moved into a new longer house, so I bought a new Airport Express (n) yesterday in order to extend the network. After going through the manual setup process, checked "extend this network" on both Extreme and Express, I still find the Express throws off a very weak signal. My computer is 10 feet from the Express and it's only at 2 bars of strength. It's starting to make me think that my computer is trying to connect with the Extreme (other end of the house), not the Express.
This is somewhat difficult to troubleshoot since both have the same network name.
    Any help?

Open AirPort Utility and click on the AirPort Extreme. Write down the AirPort ID of the device that you see in the window. Then do the same for the AirPort Express.
Move your laptop near the AirPort Express. Hold down the option key on your Mac while you click on the fan shaped AirPort icon at the top of the screen. Look for the BSSID. That is the AirPort ID of the device that your Mac is connected to.
If you are close to the AirPort Express, but see the ID of the AirPort Extreme, you are connected to the AirPort Extreme. Something is wrong with your setup, or the Express may be located too far away from the Extreme to pick up a good signal.
You want the Express located about 1/2 the distance from the AirPort Extreme to the area that needs more wireless coverage. Try different locations and be sure to restart both the Extreme and Express when you make any location changes.

  • Airport Express refuses to update firmware

I have an airport express that seems to be stuck on the 7.4.1 firmware. Whether I try to upgrade to 7.4.2 or down to an older version, it always stays at 7.4.1. Any suggestions for how to fix this?

Have you tried a Factory Default Reset first, and then tried to update the firmware?
If not, try the reset as follows:
Power down the Express for a few moments
Hold in the reset button and keep holding it in as you then plug the Express back in to power
Release the reset button after 10 seconds
Then open AirPort Utility to see if you can update the device. If you decide to try the default reset, you will lose all of your current settings, so you should understand that you will have to reconfigure the device again from scratch.
If you cannot update the firmware after a few default resets, then there is an issue with your AirPort Express and it will likely need to be exchanged.

  • TV and Airport EXPRESS stop streaming after update

I have read all of the posts regarding the Airport Extreme update being the culprit of the slow streaming with the Apple TV, but I have an Airport Express (2 actually) that suddenly stopped streaming after the last batch of updates (iTunes 8 etc.).
Everything has been working flawlessly - I have all my movies and TV shows on an old Mac that streams to my Apple TV via 2 Airport Express base stations. I have one AE station "hosting" my internet connection, and then the other acting as a WDS remote. Suddenly after the last updates I have no streaming. I have re-set everything, and re-connected my media server to my Apple TV and no luck. My AE's are at the latest firmware 6.3, and Apple TV, iTunes and even OS is all up to date.
If anyone has any ideas how to fix this I would really appreciate it - it's driving me crazy.
    Thanks in advance.

Am in the same boat as it where, so will be happy to hear a solution!

  • Airport Express falls out after app. a day

    Hi
My Airport Express is 2 years old and is suddenly begone to stop allowing connection after about a day. Then if you cut the power and again power it up it works just fine fore about a day or so. I have reloaded the firmware, and that did'nt change anything. My question is - do i have any options to fix it my self or should i just go buy a new device?
    Sincerely
    Kim

    Welcome to the discussions, Kim!
It sounds like your AirPort Express is likely picking up some wireless interference from another wireless network near you, or even a nearby cordless phone.
Do you have AirPort Utility installed on your computer? It would be located as follows:
Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
    Click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
Look for the setting for Channel. It is probably set to Automatic now
Select another channel such as 8 or 9
Click Update to save your new settings
Give that a try. You may need to experiment further in order to find a clear, unused Channel. Keep trying different channels if needed. Hopefully, you will find a good one for your wireless network.

  • Airport Express error 15006 after period of no use

I have a network composed of a Time Capsule connected via ethernet to a Mac Mini running iTunes which broadcasts to three Airport Express stations. As long as I'm actively using it, I don't have any problems. When I come home from work, I can always count on an error 15006 in iTunes saying one of the Airport Express devices has disconnected. At this point, I have to stop and restart iTunes and everything is fine again. Since the Mac Mini is headless, running as a media server, this means pulling out my laptop and getting a remote desktop on the Mac Mini to restart iTunes - a daily ritual for months now.
I see a lot of discussion in here about restarting AEs and flashing firmware and whatnot, but it seems to me that iTunes just doesn't handle this situation properly, an error dialog is unnecessary when it could apparently just rescan the network and repair itself as it does on startup. Is there some other fix for this scenario? iTunes developers, could you please handle this sort of error differently with a more proactive approach?

    John Galt wrote:
    What a pain!
After the investment, and getting everything tuned in and working perfectly, having that outstanding issue was... quite painful to my psyche, yes
If you have a suggestion you should direct it via:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/
I did that... no feedback, of course, but it sure does seem like the last iTunes update addressed it. The dialog is still left up, but it seems to rescan the airport express devices and make them available again, for instance, in the Remote application. Keeping my fingers crossed, but it's been awhile since I hauled out the remote desktop and restarted iTunes because of that error - it was a daily event.

  • Airport Extreme Signal Weaker than Before

My Airport Extreme signal is weaker than it used to be. Nothing has changed except I can no longer connect to the internet without running diagnostics each time I try to use it. It will connect and then stay connected until my macbook goes to sleep. When it wakes up, I have to re-connect using diagnostics.
I am using it in the same room I always have and never had problems before. But for the past several weeks, it is just not behaving as it always has. I have checked for a firmware update, but airport utility doesn't indicate that one is available. It's running: Version 6.3.2.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. It's run great for the past several years. This is a new issue...

Because I can no longer connect to the internet without running diagnostics each time I try to use it. It will connect and then stay connected until my macbook goes to sleep. When it wakes up, I have to re-connect using diagnostics.
I am using it in the same room I always have and never had problems before. It will connect without problems in other rooms that are closer to the base station. But from the room where I ordinarily connect, it won't automatically connect anymore.
I can get it to connect from that room, and it will stay connected, but I can only do so by running diagnostics, telling it to assist me and then selecting the network and and following the steps to connect.
