Airport Express Speaker Option

I have an Airport Express connected to my wireless network, but when I try to toggle the speakers from computer to "Airport Express 63314f" (the name of the AE), that selection is grayed out. So iTunes seems to recognize the AE is therre, but won't let me use it. Why? How do I acess the speakers?

I've been having an AE and had the same problem.

for the last couple of days i no longer can see my itunes speaker from an old Airport Express (V 6.3) 802.11g. Airport Utility 5.6 still lets me set it up, so I can see it there. but for some reaason i can no longer see that speaker selection in itunes or any of my devices. Any ideas? Thanks.

What version of Acrobat or Acrobat Reader are you using? Are you trying to open the PDF files from the Finder, or in Acrobat/Reader?

Airport Express speaker problem

I have an Airport Extreme running my home network with two Airport Expresses, both hooked up to powered speakers. One Express is the older model, the other brand new. AirTunes intermittently drops one or the other speaker setup. My question is this- would I potentially fix this problem by upgrading the older Express to a new one? Thanks!

If all of your wireless client support 802.11n, then the answer would be yes. In that case you could create an 802.11n only network to get the best bandwidth possible for streaming.

Airport express speaker selection

Is it possible to have multiple airport expresses on the same network and select a specific express with speakers and then be able to switch expresses/speakers i.e a different room or area?

Yes, you can have multiple Airport Express Base Stations (AX), each connected to speakers or an audio receiver. You can then stream from iTunes (or other sources) to one or multiple AXs simultaneously.

Airport Express Speaker output very quiet with 60-cycle hum

I've previously hooked up my Airport Express to my stereo system via AirTunes, and it worked fine. But I just moved and set up my home network with my Airport Express connected to the stereo with the mini-stereo adapter. But now, when I play music over AirTunes, I can hear the music very faintly, but it's about the same volume as a 60-cycle electrical interference hum, and definitely not listenable. So I know the music is streaming and the AirPort is receiving, but I'm wondering if it's an electrical problem with the AirPort or output jack, or is there some software or hardware fit I can do myself. I've plugged in & out the cord, it works with an iPod, it's connected to a non-Phono jack of the stereo (AUX port), and I've reset the AirPort Express unit. Any other suggestions? Thanks in advance.

To rule out your stereo or audio cable, try substituting a pair of stereo headphones plugged directly into the AX's audio port. Do you still hear the hum? If so, then the problem is either with the AX itself or the power source is not properly shielded. Try connecting the AX to a known good power strip; one that has surge protection and/or noise cancelling capability would be ideal, and then, plug this into the outlet that you had the AXn connected to. Did this help? If not, then unfortunately, the problem may be with either the AX's audio and/or power circuit.

Cant connect to Airport Express or Apple TV

After I upgraded I cant connect my Itunes to Airport Express (the option on the bottom is gone) ... nor can I connect to AppleTV.

Reboot your wireless router. For some reason after major updates I have to reboot my wireless router to get homesharing and streaming working again. Unplug the router, count to 30 slowly and plug it back in again. Hope it helps.

Airport Express appears as an option in iTunes but sound only plays on comp

I used to be able to play itunes music through my computer or through an amplifier connected to an Airport Express. Since upgrading to iTunes 8 there is a third option displayed in the lower right portion of the iTunes window, "multiple speakers", but now, no matter which option I select the music plays through my computer and not through the remote speakers connected to the amplifier. Any one else have this problem? Any solutions?
I have turned off IPv6 to no effect. The Airport Express seems to be functioning normally as a wireless network. I have changed the iTunes preferences with respect to controlling sound in remote speakers with no effect.

There is a 3.5mm standard headphone audio output on the bottom of the airport express. If you plug speaks or headphones into this port while airport express is selected in iTunes, you be able to hear your music. Usefull if your destop is in one room and you want to hear music from it in another room where the airport is located.

Cannot see Airport Express as an Audio Output option!

Hello All,
Very frustruating.
I bought an AirPort Express hoping to use it as a Audio output device for movies/spotify etc.
Plugged it all in to my reciever (using optical cable) configured it to my TC network.
Opened itunes and the Airplay function is working perfectly. Music is streaming as expected.
However i cannot see the AE in the audio output options (when i "option+click" the speaker icon).
Tearing my hair out as this was the primary reason for purchasing the AE!
any help would be greatly apprecaited.

Trying to play movies through VLC and stream the Audio component to my AirPort express. Similary use Spotify on my computer and stream the audio component.
I thought i would be able to enable my laptop (Macbook Air) to use the Airport Express as its 'speakers' through selecting it as the output source in System preferences.
However it does not show up in the system preferences at all, what has me stumped is the Airport Express is 100% functional through itunes as well as some third party applications (Airfoil).
Im very confused as other users (from extensive google searching) appear to be able to atleast see the AirPort Express as an output device.
Any help greatly appreciated.

Not all Airport Express speakers showing up in Multiple Speakers option?

I can choose my airport express speakers in the drop down menu in iTunes individually, but when I open the multiple speakers option only 2 out of 5 zones show up?

I was able to resolve my issue. I found the answer from another post in an Apple forum. What you need to do is open the multiple speaker option and expand the window to show the additional Aiports/Apple TVs linked in iTunes. Once I did this, I am not able to see everything as expected. Seems like a flaw that it doesn't default to this extended view. Hope this helps.

ITunes 10 - Streaming to Airport Express is not an option.

Any idea why I can no longer AirTunes/AirPlay to my Airport Express? I only have the option to use my old AppleTV as an AirTunes/AirPlay speaker.

I did the following to resolve it:
Itunes -> Edit -> Preferences -> Devices -> and remove checkbox from "Search for remote ...." in spanish the option is "Buscar altavoces remotos conectados con airplay". Press OK button.
Same thing checking the option again: Itunes -> Edit -> Preferences -> Devices -> and mark the checkbox from "Search for remote ...."

Let's double-check your AX's settings...
To set up AirTunes on the AirPort Express Base Station (AX), using the AirPort Admin Utility, connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then, try these settings:
AirPort tab
- Base Station Name: <whatever you wish or use the default>
- Wireless Mode: Join an Existing Wireless Network (Wireless Client)
- Wireless Network: <select your Belkin wireless network>
Music tab
- Enable AirTunes on this base station (checked)
- Enable AirTunes over the Ethernet port (optional)
- iTunes Speaker Name: <whatever you wish>
- iTunes Speaker Password (optional)
In iTunes:
iTunes > Preferences... > Advanced > General
- Look for remote speakers connected with AirTunes (checked)

How do I use an airport express with the Apple A1121 speaker?

No, actually a really good question. The adapter is basically a 3.5 mm audio plug on one end and a digital optical jack on the other. It is designed to be used with a digital optical cable. Some cable providers have these in one unit. That is, the adapter is permanently attached to one end of the cable.

Neither speaker set has its own equalizer, and both require a different EQ setting to sound just right. Does anyone know of a way to have iTunes automatically change its EQ setting based on which Airport Express it is streaming to?

I'm in the same boat. I have a 6 zone amplifier running with 6 airport expresses to different rooms inside and outside the house. Each has it's own acoustic characteristics. I'd really love to be able to set each airport to equalize based on my SPL frequency sweep I did for each room.
Setting the eq in itunes won't do it as that is global plus I have many more sources for auiod other than itunes that use the AEs directly.
