AIrport Express / Spotify / Airfoil streaming problems

Hello world! Hoping you can help....
I have a Mac Book Pro and two hifi systems connected to my wireless network via two separate Air Port Express units.
I downloaded Airfoil to allow me to stream music to these Airport devices from Spotify.
Unfortunately the music constantly drops out, sometimes for minutes at a time. I can see the music is still playing on the Spotify App and the blue bar on the airfoil app is moving to show music is streaming through that too (before you ask I've checked volume and ensured Spotify is the chosen output!).
Occasionally one audio system will play music whilst the other is silent, but usually both airport express units will fail at the same time.
I live in a large block of flats, and I have always assumed that the problem was due to the number of wireless networks in the building... but then that wouldn't explain how the music is still playing on the app.
A friend has suggested a Airport Extreme base station might help matters, but another friend has said that wouldn't really help.
If anyone can help me with this problem it would be hugely appreciated. It's really frustrating!!!
P.

I have this same problem. The new Express was super-easy to set up - I didn't even have to do anything - but it does introduce gaps when I am streaming from services like Mog. My old Experss doesn't do that.
Would love to know what the solution is - otherwise, I'm taking this back to the Apple Store.

  • AirPort Express with PC -- Setup Problems

    Hi
Just wanted to share my experience -- I wasted most of a day getting my AirPort Express network up. Problem was, the setup software assumes that you have a wireless card in your PC. If, like me, you have a simple ethernet connection to a wireless router, then the program apparently has no way of finding the AirPort Express.
After hours of fumbling with suggestions on this forum, I finally found the tech support number and we figured out that I needed to run the setup program on my laptop, which does have a wireless card.
I would STRONGLY encourage Apple to re-write its setup software to recognize this very common hardware configuration and work with it, lest more customers waste more of their time. I was THIS CLOSE to angrily returning the box. Now that it's up, I really love it, but I almost didn't get there.

I had the same problem as you did with the setup of the AX from a PC connected to the router by Ethernet. I was able to run the setup by using the "Other ..." button at the bottom of the Base Station Chooser and giving it the IP address of the AX.
Does iTunes on the PC connected to the router by Ethernet find the AX? It doesn't for me. It works great from my other 3 PCs that are connected to the network by wireless. Of course, the PC with the problem is the one across the family room from the stereo ...

  • How do you setup an Airport Express to only stream music???

+I have a Time Capsule setup as my base for the internet access, followed by an airport express for wireless usb devices and for my stereo. I have a second airport express to which I want to setup for streaming music only. When I leave my home and go to friends etc i which to stream music via this second airport express.+
When I setup this device I get "problem connecting to the internet" I have marked that I do not which to connect to the Internet and the following message comes "make sure your ethernet cable is connected" blah blah blah. All I need is a portable music streaming "Airport Express" device, no connecting to another network, no internet access ect. Please can someone help?????? Am I just chancing my tail???
    Thanks in advance.

So you want to set the AirPort Express (AX) up at a location with no wireless network and no Ethernet network?
Just configure the AX to create a wireless network and ignore the messages about not being connected to the internet... because you aren't. Have your computer join the wireless network created by the AX. Start iTunes and stream music.

  • Airport Express wireless audio streaming keeps skipping

    Hi all
I'm new to the forums, so hope you're going to be able to help me!
We have 2 airport express's in our apartment. One downstairs and one upstairs. Our main router is downstairs. Our living area is upstairs.
We have all of our music loaded onto our iPad 2 and we stream it to the upstairs airport express (which is usually connected no less than 10ft away). The iPad is connected via Wifi to the airport express upstairs.
The upstairs airport express connects via cable to our surround sound amplifier system.
Whilst playing music, it constantly cuts out, sometimes for many seconds at a time, making music impossible to listen to.
We also have the latest apple tv, and we've tried streaming the music from the iPad to that, but it does the same thing again. The apple tv is also connected to the amplifier.
I hope I've explained the situation well enough - any information you can provide would be appreciated.
    Many thanks,
    Scott

    Sure, no problem.
You are going to take Signal & Noise measurements, and then, calculate the Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR). Not to worry, it sounds more difficult than actually doing it. Note: When taking these measurements, you will only want the AEBS to be broadcasting a wireless network as it is this network that we want to measure at the location of the AX. So, you just need to leave the AX disconnected from power and connect your Mac to the AEBS's wireless network while located near the AX. You, of course, are free (and encouraged) to take measurements at other point, like near the AEBS, a location between the AEBS and AX, and other areas upstairs where you can plug the AX into to see the differences.
SNR (in dB) = Signal (in dBm) - Noise (in dBm)
You can easily find the Signal and Noise values using System Profiler on your Mac laptop.
ref: Click on the Apple icon on the menu bar > About This Mac > More Info... > Contents > Network > AirPort > Interfaces > en1 > Current Network Information > Find your wireless network > Signal / Noise
While your still in the System Profiler, note the value for Transmit Rate.
These values should be negative numbers. For example, mine currently read: -67 dBm / -95 dBm, with a transmit rate of 27 (Mbps). Plugging in these numbers yield: SNR = -67 - (-95) = 28. My Mac Mini is about four rooms away from my AEBS with about five walls between them. As you can see, the signal is still quite useable ... but the bandwidth is minimal, especially for streaming.
    SNR Guideline
    40dB+ SNR = Excellent signal
25dB to 40dB SNR = Very good signal
    15dB to 25dB SNR = Low signal
10dB to 15dB SNR = Very low signal
    5dB to 10dB SNR = No signal
    Please post back your results.

  • Airport Express and Time Capsule problem

We've had an AirPort express since 2006 that has always worked FINE for wireless printing and Airplay.  We just bought a new iMac and a TimeCapsule (2tb).  We replaced our netgear router with the TimeCapsule, and now we have problems.  First off, if the iMac goes to sleep when it wakes - although the connection to the Internet is intact - AirPort Utility will not be able to find any of the TWO devices from any computer in the house (MacBook, PC, and iMac).  Second, if we try AirPlay from iTunes we get this:
And from there, everything again disappears from the AirPort Utility for a while........and then comes back and works fine.  Anyone know how to get rid of this hiccup?  sometimes it takes a while to come back, and we have to turn off one of the devices and turn it back on again.
    Thanks!

So you replaced the netgear router with teh TimeCapsule, and configured the airport express to join the network correct?
The iMac is connected to a LAN port on the TimeCapsule right?
AirPlay works by first "finding," and then, establishing a secured communications link between the iTunes host and the TimeCapsule. Once this link has been established, it can then start the streaming process. Also periodically through the streaming, AirPlay checks to see if the link is still valid.

  • Airport Express won't stream Netflix through Playstation 3

My PS3 can pick up the wireless internet signal from the router perfectly, I can play online games with no problem. If I plug the ethernet cord directly into the PS3, Netflix works flawlessly, so I'm sure its the router. It's an airport express with the latest firmware, I've got a printer plugged into the USB port for wireless printing, and an audio cord in for using AirPlay. Any ideas?

Would it have something to do with Airport stations not supporting UPnP?
Possibly. UPnP, like Apple's NAT-PMP, allows an application to "automatically" open ports in the NAT firewall. For best throughput for Netflix streaming, you would want the following ports open:
    TCP: 80, 443, 5223, 10070-10080
    UDP: 3478, 3479, 3658, 10070
Also, I was looking at some info on my router and it has an error, something to do with "Double NAT". I'm not really sure what that means, but would it be preventing my PS3 from streaming Netflix?
A "Double NAT" means that you have two routers in series that both have NAT enabled. I believe that your Motorola 4G modem is actually a combination modem & router. That means that your AX should be reconfigured as a bridge so that the Motorola can provide both NAT & DHCP services for your network. In this case either the Motorola would need to be enabled for UPnP or configure it for port mapping. However, I have a feeling that once you reconfigure the AX as a bridge, your Netflix streaming issue will be resolved.

  • Airport express and choppy streaming video

I am running AX with a DHCP router from my service provider. Up until recently I watched streaming video (Adobe Flash Player) with no problems.  Now the video seems to stutter and have to rebuffer often and it seems to happen when Airport  is "Looking for new Networks".  This means the video stutters every 30 seconds or so.  Is there any way to avoid this?  My connection does not actually drop, it's just the streaming video that gets broken up.
So far I have tried to
    manually stick to one channel
reset the airport express to factory settings (which actually helped a bit; stutters from every 10 seconds to every 30 seconds)
    fiddled with interference robustness
    Any suggestions?
    AC

I'm not sure of the exact length restriction, but I have used a 100' cable with my AirPort Express Base Station (AX) to connect to the stereo and it worked just fine.

  • Optimum Airport Express Setup for Streaming and Mirroring same time

Hi, my AirPort Express probably is over hyped when I am using internet streaming and AirPlay Mirroring at same time, (I don't have the problem if I wired iPad directly to home TV). I wonder what and where I can set AirPort Express in optimum condition for doing that? Is any link can guide me set up step by step...
    Thanks a lot

Thanks Tesserax, there are two 5 GHz radio mode, which one I shall choose?
    802.11n (802.11a compatible)
    802.11n only (5 GHz)
I chose 802.11n (802.11a compatible) last night and with wide channel width, after change, my laptop is not able to find the base, even the light on Airport is green. Shall I try to use  802.11n only (5 GHz), with wide channel width option clicked?
    Thanks

  • Airport Express and Netflix streaming movies

Problem: When a Netflix movie streams to my BluRay wireless-capable DVR, I get maybe five minutes of the movie, then an error message saying "can't connect to Netflix".
The TV set is in a room about 70 feet from my original Airport Express, which I use in a home office as a wireless network between my two computers (Mac mini running 10.4.11 and a Windows Vista laptop). Through AE the two computers share an internet connection and a printer.
To get Netflix movies, on Apple's advice I bought a second AE to extend the signal range and placed it about halfway between my home office setup and the room with the TV. The distance, as I said, is about 70 feet across four rooms.
Neither Netflix tech support or LG tech support has provided a solution despite several calls to each.
    Any ideas?

I just bought a newest Airport Extreme, because the AirPort Express would drop to my newest MacBook Pro using WiFi and viewing a NetFlix instant/streaming movie. My Airport Express would only cover a small part of my house. At work, we have an older Airport Extreme and it covers a huge area! So, I was thinking I'll buy a newest Airport Extreme and get great coverage throughout my house and NetFlix will stream perfectly!
Unfortunately, I get pretty much the same results with the AirPort Extreme as my old AirPort Express!?!?!? I don't get good coverage throughout my house and NetFlix drops!?!?!? THe error is something like (from NetFlix), "dropped internet, testing and will reset to lower quality for uninterrupted viewing".
So, the Airport Extreme didn't help at all? I see a strong signal, but still get dropped Netflix.
Funny thing is, If I use an old Xbox wireless adapter and connect to my Motorola modem/WiFi router, the movies stream fine and I get a good signal throughout the house!?
I would much rather be able to use the built in Airport card on my newest MacBook Pro and the Airport Extreme....
    Any ideas?
What settings should I change from the default Airport Extreme settings?
    Thank you.... (anyone?)

  • Airport Express & Apple TV Setup Problems

I am having some strange problems with my network. First, I reset my Airport Express and went through the steps of connecting it to stream music, however, the Airport Utility will not recognize it after restarting (I can do a hard reset and it will find the unit, but then hangs up over and over at the same point).
Also, at the same time, my Apple TV is showing in iTunes, can stream music and movies, but is not showing in the Airport Utility and will not sync.
I am not sure what I might have changed...any ideas

I am on 10.5.8. When I do a hard reset the airport Express, the computer finds it, however, after going through the steps to add it to my network to stream iTunes, it restarts and the computer can't find it (light continuously blinks amber).
The AppleTV is showing in my iTunes, but NOT in my list of wireless devices and it won't sync. So it does stream movies and music, just won't sync. When I try and sync it, I get a firewall error, but I have my firewall settings to allow all incoming devices.
Should I just reset everything and try and start over?

  • Airport express only music streaming

    Good morning,
I just want to you use airport express for streaming music conneting a receiver and my mac pro book.
I don´t wanna go into the internet.
    What to do?
I´m using a fritzbox 3270 for internet, phone, etc.
    Thanks in advance.
    Michael

You basically have two choices and they are dependent on whether or not you want to "switch" wireless networks between accessing the Internet and streaming.
The AirPort Express can be used standalone, meaning that you do not need to connect it to a network or the Internet in order for it to provide a Wi-Fi network for streaming. However, if you do so, you will (again) have to switch which wireless network you will connect to in order to do so.
If this works for you, then I can provide the set up instructions.

  • Airport Express cuts off streaming music

I have an Airport Express 802.11n (2nd Generation)  Version 7.6.2 Firmware
I have configured my network to use my airport express to stream music from iTunes.  My music stops sporatically when streaming.  It eventually starts back up, then it stops again sometimes for as long as a minute.  FRUSTRATING.
The musis still plays on my computer, it's just something with the music stream.  Has anyone else encountered this?
The Airport express is configured to "Join Wireless Network" and the security is "WPA2 Personal"
I'm connecting to a Cisco Systems WAP AP610N with a wireless band of 2.4GHz and a Channel Width of 20 MHz
Standard Channel is:  6 which is 2.437GHz
    Any suggestions on why?

FYI, my final resolution was to sell it and buy another one.

  • Airport Express for music streaming, but not Internet?

I currently connect my PowerMac G5 to the Internet via a direct connection. How do I setup the A/E to stream music from my PowerMac G5 (Airport equipped), without disrupting the existing Ethernet connection?

If you want your G5 to be on the Internet AND stream music at the same time, the AirPort Express (AX) must be connected to your Internet source. The G5 can not use the Ethernet connection for Internet and the AirPort connection for streaming music at the same time.
If you have a wired router but do not have a wireless router, you could connect both the G5 and AX to the wired router.
If you do not have a router of any kind (other than the AX), you could connect AX to the ISP connection and then have the G5 wirelessly connect to the AX.
OR you could connect a wireless router to the ISP connection and then have the G5 and AX wirelessly connect to the router. Alternatively the G5 could be connected to the wireless router via Ethernet.

  • Airport express 802.11g connection problems

I own both an intel mac mini and a macbook, both running Leopard. I also own an Airport Express, which until about 4 months ago worked flawlessly. Since about Jan or Feb, my internet connection (via AT&T DSL) has gotten so flaky that I wind up using a neighbor's unprotected wireless connection (as I am now), even though my router is literally 3 feet away from me! I can't even connect to my router! I live in a condo, and have been told the signals from other wireless routers are "stomping" on my own wireless signal.
I have been told to move the router away from any electronic devices, but before this whole thing happened, my router was even closer to my computer than it is now, and worked without a hitch.
What do I do with this? A guy at a local Apple reseller suggests I upgrade to the latest Airport Express (802.11n), but I want to make sure I explore ALL options before spending the bucks.
    PLEASE advise...

I had the same problem with my AirPort Express. After much trouble shooting on the phone with Apple, they told me the same - that electronics were interfering and we needed to turn off all electronics. Did that and problem continued. They stayed their argument. I took the Airport Express router to a remote location where there was no chance of any interference. Problem continued. Again I called Apple - they stayed their argument. I convinced them to send me a new one. Fixed the problem. That one died about 1 week later. Called Apple again (and repeated the process). I asked them to send yet another new one. They said no because it was obviously MY problem - or something with the area where I was using it (even though I tried it in different locations). I took it to the Apple Store - they ran a diagnostic and yep, it was a problem with the router. So, I'm on my 3rd one -it's been working for a few years now.
My diagnosis is a bad Airport Express. Don't let Apple tell you it's a problem with "electronic interference" because likely its a faulty device and they don't want to take the flack for it.

  • Airport Express Base Station Setup problem

My new Airport Express Base Station (2nd generation) does not sense the internet using an ethernet cable.  The status light is green.  I am using a hotel's DSL system in Brazil.  When using the same cable, and connecting my laptop directly to the system, it senses the internet just fine, so I know it isn't the cable or the hotel.  Does anyone know of compatibility problems with this Airport model?

Does the DSL service require PPPoE for authentication before allowing you Internet access? If so, then the device directly connected to the DSL modem would need to be configured as such.
