Airport Express Stopped Working when I switched to FIOS wireless router

AirPort Express worked for several years with Linksys router. When I upgraded to FIOS service, it came with a new wireless router. I have two Macs (iMac-G5 and MacBook 2.0 GHz) and work-supplied Lenovo T-61. Network is set up with WPA2 with 23-character-long pass phrase. AE (802.11B/G) will not connect to network. I can reset it to factory defaults and Airport Utility will find it. I then change the wireless interface on iMac to match the default network and I can configure the AE. When I apply the configuration changes, the AE reboots and never comes on-line. It stays in either the blinking orange pattern or in the alternate between orange and green pattern.
I have tried setting the AE up manually as well as "automatically" and have not had any success. I was a network engineer for over 10 years, so I have lots of experience configuring IP routing and switching. The log files on the FIOS router do not show any attempts by the AE to connect to my LAN.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

Suspecting a problem with the security key, I began to experiment with different security settings. My first attempt was to change the security setting on the Verizon router from WPA2 to WPA. I did not change the key. When I did, I was able to configure the AirPort Express and then get the Airport Express to reboot and establish wireless communications with the FIOS router. Again, the only change I made was to switch the encryption type on the FIOS router from WPA2 to WPA. I have no idea why the AirPort Express would not properly join the network when the main wireless access point (the FIOS router) was using WPA2 security.

  • Airport Express Stops working when broadcast is turned off

    Router: Linksys WRT54G version 2
    Using: Airport Express
Purpose of Airport Express: To enable wireless speakers.
After a lot of trouble with the router and eventually having to update all router firmware, changing the type of security the router was working, etc I finally have the router up and running.
Everything is working fine but the last step I'd like to do is not have my SSID broadcast. As soon as I stop broadcasting the network the extreme loses it's connection.
The audio bridge I used before (Sondigo) hasn't updated it's drivers for windows 7 in months so I switched to the airport express but the audio bridge didn't need the SSID to be broadcast to work once it was connected to the wireless network.
Is it possible to have the SSID NOT broadcast and the extreme to continue to extend + broadcast the wireless speakers?
    Thanks!

Welcome to the discussion area, Carl M!
You'll enhance your chances of the AirPort Express joining the hidden Linksys network if you "hard reset" the AirPort Express by holding in the reset button until the amber light blinks more quickly, then release.
Configure the Express again to "join" your Linksys wireless network. Since the network will not appear as a choice to join, you'll have to type in the exact name of your network, security and password to give the Express the best chance to connect.
This procedure will sometimes work, sometimes not. Might be worth a try.

  • Airport Express stopped working...

My airport express stopped working some time ago so I bought a new one so I could play my music remotely again. My ld one just "disappeared" , it no longer showed on iTunes. I am having problems setting the new one up. I am using airport utilities and going through all the prompts. It is making me join my existing wireless network. At the end when it goes to restart, I get an error message "Airport utility was unable to find your Apple wireless device after restarting".
    I am stuck, any suggestions?

    Quick check list
Is your AE firmware updated to 7.3.2?
    Is your OS 10.5.4?
Is your Airport Utility software 5.3.2?
What are you using for a wireless base station? is it a combo modem / router, or are you using an Apple Extreme Base Station in bridge mode with a third party router?
All of the above are possible issues.
Provide some more detail in your post and the group will be more likely to be able to help
    Cheers

  • Why does AirPort Extreme stop working when I plug in a USB hard drive?

Why does Airport Extreme stop working when I plug in a USB hard drive?  The USB drive has its own power supply.  I've tried isolating the hard drive from Airport using a powered USB hub to no avail.

The USB port on the AirPort Extreme is borderline as far as its ability to supply adequate power to a hard drive. Another way of saying the same thing is that this is not a high power USB port, like you would find on a computer.
Your 2TB drive likely requires a bit more current than the USB port on the AirPort Extreme can supply. It is also possible that the drive's firmware may not support a network USB connection....only a "local" connection to a computer. Check with Seagate support on that possibility.
Try using a powered USB hub with the 2TB drive....and make sure that the drive is formatted correctly in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or FAT32....which the AirPort Extreme USB port can accept.

  • Airport express has stopped working when college switched network to 'N'

    Hi all,
My university has just switched their wireless to 'N'-band. My airport express ('G') is now upset: not only has airtunes stopped working (I previously had joined it to the dorm wireless network), but I can no longer even access my airport in the Airport Utility (5.3.2).
I've done a hard reset of my airport express and I still cannot access the device via the airport utility. When I click 'rescan', the device is never found.
I have noticed, however, the default network "Apple Network 600eab' appearing among my wireless network choices. Unfortunately, Airport never actually lets me join that network.
Does anyone have any ideas I can try?
    Thanks
    LD

I've had to go back to firmware 7.4.1 and that seems to work.  Anyone know what is up with 7.5.2?

  • Airport Express Stops Working

Dear All, My Airport Express just stopped working. I tried to reset it (while plugged in, use a pin to punch the reset hole) but the amber light keeps blinking. Is this normal? Or have I done anything wrong? I truly appreciate your input.
    Jimmy Chiu

A persistent, flashing amber light indicates that any of the several potential conditions may require your attention:
o The base station has not yet been configured because it is new, or the reset switch has been set.
o You have selected a security configuration that is not recommended.
o One of several other conditions, such as a disconnected Ethernet cable or invalid IP address has been detected.
    (ref: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305101)
If you run the AirPort Utility, it will show an amber circle on the summary page next to the area(s) causing the problem. Click on this amber circle and it should provide an explanation.

  • Had a Airport Express connected to my stereo and it was working.  I brought an Airport Extreme and suddenly it took over and Airport Express stopped working and disappeared from Airport Utility. What I am supposed to do?  ar2ro

I have an Airport Express connected to my stereo and it was working without any problem.
Recently I bought an Airport Extreme to use it as my Base Unit connecting it to my DSL.
I followed the instructions of the Airport Utility, and it started working.
Suddenly, problems started happen the Airport express that was connected to the stereo , stopped working and it disappeared from the Airport Utility area , as it did not exist in the network. I tried to reset it but it did not appear in the Airport Utility page.
Apparently I have other problems with the private network that it created because I cannot use it because of problems with the password that was created.  I can only use the network that  I created for my guest...
I dont know if my problem is a configuration problem or  there is problem with the equipment.
I read that other users where having the same problem with the Airport express , using non apple equipment as their base unit , but I thought that using the Airport Extreme was going to be compatible and no problems would happen.
    What should I do?

    Common Problem. Common solution.
Connect your Express via ethernet cable to the Mac while other network connections on the Mac are switched OFF.
After the Express shows up, change the settings of the Express to join the existing network. Take the appr. settings.
Unplug and reconnect your Mac to the network.
Check if the Express shows up in Airport Utility
    Alternative solution:
Hardreset the Express to factory settings
(while on power push the Pin next to the audio plug with a paperclip. Plug out the Express still holding down the little button then replug the Express to power and release button)
After that, the Express will show up in the Airport Utility.
    Make all needed settings.
I would prefer the first solution, its easier just to plug a cat5 cable.

  • Some keys and functions stop working when i switch users.

2 people use my computer and just recently when i switch to my user, the special function keys stop working (screen and keyboard brightness - not sure what other keys aren't working. spaces works and so does play/pause etc). also i can't log out using the key short cuts nor by going to the menu and selecting Log Out.
switching back to the other user, the keys still work. and if i set the brightness there when i switch back the setting remain on my side. but i can't control them. the only way to get them back is to restart the computer which i can't do from my user. when i select restart, it beach balls for a few seconds then nothing happens.

Search for PRAM Reset On Mac.  Unless restrictions of some kind are set on that other user, this shouldn't be happening.

  • Airport Express not working when used with Broadband Router **HELP!!!**

    Hello.
I have an ethernet network in my house, and I am connected to the network via a Linksys router for Broadband VOIP and internet. I am on a G5 in my home office and want to stream music to my Airport Express for my home stereo in the living room, via the ethernet connection.
The problem is that when using the router in my network, only the Admin Utility sees the base station-- iTunes does not.
If I remove the router from the equation altogether and plug the network ethernet cable directly into the G5, the AX in the other room works just fine and I can get internet on the G5 in the office. The problem is that I need the router to operate my Vonage VOIP phone service and to connect a second computer to the internet as well. The IP address for the router in the home office is "192.168.x.xxx" and when I try moving it to the living room and connecting the AX to it, the Admin Asst doesn't see the AX at all.
When I connect the router to the network in the office, I can use internet on both computers and the VOIP phone service, and the AX Admin Asst. sees the base station from the other room. But again, iTunes does not.
Is there a way to configure the router to see the AX?
    Thanks for your help!

Forgive me if this a little off thread, but I have just managed to get this to work and thought it might help people with similar configuration issues (mix manufacturer wireless networks)
I received an Airport Express (FW v. 6.3) for Christmas this year. I already am using a D-Link DI-524 wireless(G) router (Rev A FW 1.03) for my Comcast cable modem in my house (downstairs). What I wanted to do is to add the Airport Express in my office upstairs to my network (client mode) so that I could print from my HP Deskjet 3740 printer and listen to iTunes on my stereo through Airtunes. I have two iBooks (G3) with regular (802.11b) airport cards in them) running Tiger.
I ran into a couple of snags though. I could see the printer in Rendezvou and I could see the airport express in iTunes. I however could not print to the printer or connect to the speakers. I was able to connect to the speakers very intermittenly and then the audio would be disrupted every few seconds.
After a bit of hacking, what I found is that it seems that WPA PSK security doesn't work between the two. I changed the security to 128 bit WEP (ASCII mode). This means that you need an exactly 13 character pass phrase. This is necessary because Apple (and pretty much only Apple) supports 40 bit WEP (5 chars) and D-Link (and the rest of the Windows wireless universe) supports 64 bit WEP (7 chars), but they both support 128 bit WEP. I assume you could set both up as an open network if you were far enough from your neighbors, but I am in a townhouse complex, so I thought I probably better have some security on the network.
Now I only see one network (the one set up on my D-Link router) and I can print to my printer and stream to my stereo through iTunes (without disruption). Seems to work seemlessly now.
I should also mention that I did about three other things. I moved the LAN subnet on the D-link router to 192.168.1.1 (DHCP client address are now between 1.100 and .1.200) I had heard that this was necessary since both routers tried to use the 192.168.0 subnet, but I think this is only necessary in relay mode. I also statically assigned the IP address for the Airport Express. Finally I set up a firewall rule of Source WAN/LAN IP addresses of 192.168.1.100-200 of any protocol from ports 1-20000 to the same destination address range should be allowed to allow for all LAN traffic to be passed. I am very certain this is unnecessary and possible dangerous for security, but I thought I should mention that I did it.
    Hope this might help someone.

  • Mozc stops working when I switch locales

    Hello,
I have mozc and ibus installed on my system.
When I have LANG="en_US.UTF-8" in my /etc/locale.conf, mozc works fine.
However, when I set LANG="ja_JP.UTF-8", mozc stops working. Ibus starts fine, and I am able to type in Roman characters, but I am unable to type any Japanese characters, and I cannot do any conversions.
    I've generated 4 locales: en_US.UTF-8, en_US.ISO-8859-1, ja_JP.EUC-JP, and ja_JP.UTF-8 using the locale-gen command.
I'm not using a login manager, and my .xinitrc contains the following:
    xmodmap ~/.Xmodmap
    xrdb -merge ~/.Xresources
    ibus-daemon -xrd
    exec gnome-session
    My .xprofile contains:
    export XMODIFIERS="@im=ibus"
    export GTK_IM_MODULE="ibus"
    export QT_IM_MODULE="ibus"
I'm not really sure what the issue is. The problem persists across multiple WMs (awesome, gnome3, and xfce4). Thanks in advance, and if more information is needed just ask.

Thank you very much for your help. As you say I mean when I switch off the screen or when it goes to sleep. I realize though that it has to do with the app I'm using, SVTplay, rather than the devices since it turns out to work with Netflix. Sorry for your trouble unless you can help out with the app.

  • Bluetooth stops working when data switches

I've had my GS4 for almost a month now, and I've been having trouble while playing music via Bluetooth on my car stereo. I noticed that as I was driving, my stereo display would stop showing the title of the song, then exactly 2 seconds later the music would stop. When I looked at my phone, it showed that the music was still playing, but no sound was coming from anywhere. If I hit pause and then play again, the music started playing through the car speakers again. This was happening at completely random intervals, sometimes as often as 5 times during a 3-minute song. I started looking on the internet for a reason why this would happen and how to fix it, and I found that some people had problems with their WiFi detecting networks as they drove, and every time a new network was detected, their music would stop. I tried turning my WiFi off, but the music kept stopping. With that knowledge, I determined that the music was stopping whenever the status of my data connection changed. If I moved from a 4G to 3G area, my music stopped. If I went back into a 4G area, my music stopped. If I move to an area where I don't get a data connection, or back into a data coverage area, my music stops. The only way I can find to stop this from happening is to turn off my data completely. Has anybody else had this problem? Does anyone know how to fix it? Thank you so much for taking the time to read.

        Dear jesiswinning,
Good afternoon. I am sorry to learn of the difficulites you are experiencing with listening to music on your Samsung Galaxy S4 via Bluetooth. It would be my pleasure to address your equipment concerns.
I have verified this is not a known issues with the device. Have you tried removing the battery, then syncing back to your car? If this does not work, try to remove the SIM card from the phone, then re-insert back to your phone. For instructions on how to do this, click http://vz.to/10NQRZJ If you are still experiencing difficulites, please feel free to reach out to us. We will be more than happy to further assist.

  • Need help setting up Airport Express A1084 in Windows 7 via Netgear WNDR4500 wireless router

Hello All. I bought a used Airport Express A1084 off the net. Never had one before. My intention is to remotely control (via my iPhone using Apples Remote app or possibly XBMC) a "pc with music" and stream thru the AE connected to a boombox. I want to be able to take AE and boombox to the front yard, back yard, garage, or wherever my Netgear WNDR4500 will reach.
So far I have hit the reset on the AE and while holding, plugged it in to power (still holding) until the green light blinked. I let it go. Waited for it to complete booting (slow blinking yellow/amber light). The AE did not show up in Airport Utility ver 5.6.1. I uninstalled that version and installed older Airport Utility ver 5.4.2. Same results. I power cycled the router, turned off the Norton 365 firewall, and still get nothing. At one point though, I walked away for a while (an hour or so), came back and saw the AE listed in the left window pane of Airport Utility. I thought maybe I just didn't wait long enough so I clicked Manual Setup and it started to read the AE but Errored 10057. I tried again and got same error. I refreshed and the AE was gone.
Can someone tell me how to correct this so I can confirm I didn't buy a "brick"?
    Thanks in advance,
    Tom

Just so you are aware, the A1084 AirPort Express is a 802.11b/g wireless router that can only operate on the 2.4 GHz band. Regardless, it can be configured to join the wireless network provided by the Netgear as long as that network is configured to be backwards compatible with 802.11g clients. However, in the long run for performance, you do NOT want any non-"n" wireless clients connecting to your Netgear's network.
The 5.6.1 version of the AirPort Utility for Windows does not support the non-"n" version of the AirPort base stations. You would need to use an earlier version that will still run on Windows 7.
One thing to try would be to temporarily connect the Express directly to your PC using an Ethernet cable, and then, try accessing it with the AirPort Utility. If you are still unable to do so, you may have gotten yourself a defective unit.

  • Why phone part of iPhone stops working when I switch on Airport?

My iPhone works in my apartment. I switch on Airport...iPhone phone doesn't work. Turn off Airport...iPhone phone works.
Anybody know why this would happen?
Thanks in advance for any help or smart-ss comments.

    Because it's working as intended.
The airplane mode is for the exact purpose. It blocks the GSM signal from your phone so when you are in an airplane and they announce to shut off your cell phones you can just pop it into airplane mode and still use your ipod, video and other features.

  • Airport Express stopped working with my Airport Extreme Network

Hi. I have an airport extreme as my base station and I have an express that is used to extend the network and plug into my stereo to allow for streaming music from iTunes. The system has worked great for months and now suddenly the extreme dropped. The light used to be solid green but now its yellow. I've reset the express to factory settings and now its blinking yellow. I can't figure out how to get it back online. Any help would be appreciated. It seems like an airport utility program could do this but I can't seem to find it on my Macbook Pro.
    Tim

Sorry...I meant to say that the express dropped. The extreme still works fine and gives me good internet connectivity.
