Airport Express Stops Working

Dear All, My Airport Express just stopped working. I tried to reset it (while plugged in, use a pin to punch the reset hole) but the amber light keeps blinking. Is this normal? Or have I done anything wrong? I truly appreciate your input.
Jimmy Chiu

A persistent, flashing amber light indicates that any of the several potential conditions may require your attention:
o The base station has not yet been configured because it is new, or the reset switch has been set.
o You have selected a security configuration that is not recommended.
o One of several other conditions, such as a disconnected Ethernet cable or invalid IP address has been detected.

If you run the AirPort Utility, it will show an amber circle on the summary page next to the area(s) causing the problem. Click on this amber circle and it should provide an explanation.

  • Airport Express stopped working...

My airport express stopped working some time ago so I bought a new one so I could play my music remotely again. My ld one just "disappeared" , it no longer showed on iTunes. I am having problems setting the new one up. I am using airport utilities and going through all the prompts. It is making me join my existing wireless network. At the end when it goes to restart, I get an error message "Airport utility was unable to find your Apple wireless device after restarting".
    I am stuck, any suggestions?

    Quick check list
Is your AE firmware updated to 7.3.2?
    Is your OS 10.5.4?
Is your Airport Utility software 5.3.2?
What are you using for a wireless base station? is it a combo modem / router, or are you using an Apple Extreme Base Station in bridge mode with a third party router?
All of the above are possible issues.
Provide some more detail in your post and the group will be more likely to be able to help
    Cheers

  • Airport Express Stops working when broadcast is turned off

    Router: Linksys WRT54G version 2
    Using: Airport Express
Purpose of Airport Express: To enable wireless speakers.
After a lot of trouble with the router and eventually having to update all router firmware, changing the type of security the router was working, etc I finally have the router up and running.
Everything is working fine but the last step I'd like to do is not have my SSID broadcast. As soon as I stop broadcasting the network the extreme loses it's connection.
The audio bridge I used before (Sondigo) hasn't updated it's drivers for windows 7 in months so I switched to the airport express but the audio bridge didn't need the SSID to be broadcast to work once it was connected to the wireless network.
Is it possible to have the SSID NOT broadcast and the extreme to continue to extend + broadcast the wireless speakers?
    Thanks!

Welcome to the discussion area, Carl M!
You'll enhance your chances of the AirPort Express joining the hidden Linksys network if you "hard reset" the AirPort Express by holding in the reset button until the amber light blinks more quickly, then release.
Configure the Express again to "join" your Linksys wireless network. Since the network will not appear as a choice to join, you'll have to type in the exact name of your network, security and password to give the Express the best chance to connect.
This procedure will sometimes work, sometimes not. Might be worth a try.

  • Had a Airport Express connected to my stereo and it was working.  I brought an Airport Extreme and suddenly it took over and Airport Express stopped working and disappeared from Airport Utility. What I am supposed to do?  ar2ro

I have an Airport Express connected to my stereo and it was working without any problem.
Recently I bought an Airport Extreme to use it as my Base Unit connecting it to my DSL.
I followed the instructions of the Airport Utility, and it started working.
Suddenly, problems started happen the Airport express that was connected to the stereo , stopped working and it disappeared from the Airport Utility area , as it did not exist in the network. I tried to reset it but it did not appear in the Airport Utility page.
Apparently I have other problems with the private network that it created because I cannot use it because of problems with the password that was created.  I can only use the network that  I created for my guest...
I dont know if my problem is a configuration problem or  there is problem with the equipment.
I read that other users where having the same problem with the Airport express , using non apple equipment as their base unit , but I thought that using the Airport Extreme was going to be compatible and no problems would happen.
    What should I do?

    Common Problem. Common solution.
Connect your Express via ethernet cable to the Mac while other network connections on the Mac are switched OFF.
After the Express shows up, change the settings of the Express to join the existing network. Take the appr. settings.
Unplug and reconnect your Mac to the network.
Check if the Express shows up in Airport Utility
    Alternative solution:
Hardreset the Express to factory settings
(while on power push the Pin next to the audio plug with a paperclip. Plug out the Express still holding down the little button then replug the Express to power and release button)
After that, the Express will show up in the Airport Utility.
    Make all needed settings.
I would prefer the first solution, its easier just to plug a cat5 cable.

  • Airport Express Stopped Working when I switched to FIOS wireless router

AirPort Express worked for several years with Linksys router. When I upgraded to FIOS service, it came with a new wireless router. I have two Macs (iMac-G5 and MacBook 2.0 GHz) and work-supplied Lenovo T-61. Network is set up with WPA2 with 23-character-long pass phrase. AE (802.11B/G) will not connect to network. I can reset it to factory defaults and Airport Utility will find it. I then change the wireless interface on iMac to match the default network and I can configure the AE. When I apply the configuration changes, the AE reboots and never comes on-line. It stays in either the blinking orange pattern or in the alternate between orange and green pattern.
I have tried setting the AE up manually as well as "automatically" and have not had any success. I was a network engineer for over 10 years, so I have lots of experience configuring IP routing and switching. The log files on the FIOS router do not show any attempts by the AE to connect to my LAN.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?

Suspecting a problem with the security key, I began to experiment with different security settings. My first attempt was to change the security setting on the Verizon router from WPA2 to WPA. I did not change the key. When I did, I was able to configure the AirPort Express and then get the Airport Express to reboot and establish wireless communications with the FIOS router. Again, the only change I made was to switch the encryption type on the FIOS router from WPA2 to WPA. I have no idea why the AirPort Express would not properly join the network when the main wireless access point (the FIOS router) was using WPA2 security.

  • Airport Express stopped working with my Airport Extreme Network

Hi. I have an airport extreme as my base station and I have an express that is used to extend the network and plug into my stereo to allow for streaming music from iTunes. The system has worked great for months and now suddenly the extreme dropped. The light used to be solid green but now its yellow. I've reset the express to factory settings and now its blinking yellow. I can't figure out how to get it back online. Any help would be appreciated. It seems like an airport utility program could do this but I can't seem to find it on my Macbook Pro.
    Tim

Sorry...I meant to say that the express dropped. The extreme still works fine and gives me good internet connectivity.

  • HT2508 airport Express not working in Mountain Lion

My old airport express stopped working properly since I loaded Mountain Lion.  I purchased a new Airport Express and it will work, but the audio fades in and out.  I am connected from the airport express unit to my audio receiver via a 3.5 out into RCA (red/white) connector into the receiver.  Can someone suggest a cure?

I have three printers up and running connected to an Air Port Express,
and since I upgraded to Lion I can't connect to any of them, so I continued using SL on this MBP17.
System Preferences does not show any of my printers.
I opened Air Port and it says I need to update.
When I click on the update button, it takes me to the App Store, but no Air Port Software — What gives?
Now having the same problems with Mountain Lion.
Hoped ML would fix the problem, but NO.
I find I have to save documents to a flash drive and go to my old PowerMac G4 to print.
Steve we miss you. Apple is going to crap without you.

  • Express stopped working today

My Express stopped working today. Moved it from a plug where it had been working to another and no I can't see it from my Mac, though I can see it from my Windows laptop as a live wireless connection, it shows up on the PC as Apple Network 5f7ea1, but is absent from my Mac.
I've reset it, and confirmed it has version 6.1.1 installed (the updater could see it) , but I can't get AirPort admin to see it from either computer. Now it just displays a blinking amber light and doesn't work.

I've seen references to "Turn it off" before, but the only way to do that is unplug it. Or am I missing something? I've unplugged it a few times to no avail.
For the record, I'm connecting to this from an Extreme base station.

  • HT4587 I downloaded Airport Express Utility 5.6 to get my Airport Express to work with the latest Mac OSX 10.7.4, but when I install and run it, it still says my Airport Express is out-of-date and needs the 5.6 utility.

I downloaded and installed Airport Express Utility 5.6 to get my old Airport Express to work with the latest Mac OSX 10.7.4, but when I install and run it, it still says my Airport Express is out-of-date and needs the 5.6 utility. What's up?

It is likely that you downloaded AirPort Utility 5.6.1.  If you checked the requirements, this only runs on Leopard or Snow Leopard Macs.
You have Lion, so you need AirPort Utility 5.6 for Mac OS X Lion

  • How do I set Airport Express to work as repeater?

How do I get my Airport Express to work as a repeater for my Apple TV, iPhones and iPad? I use a Mac Pro and a Netgear N300 Wireless N Router. The N300 sees the Airport fine and I can play music to the Airport from iTunes, but none of the other advertised features appear obvious.
All of my other Apple products sync to the N300 Router without issue and apart from some minor setting up to get it working with Apple TV, the N300 presents no compatibilty issues whatsoever.
When I purchased the Airport Express, I truly beleived that the Airport Utility Software, would allow me to choose whether I want to use it for Audio or USB or Repeating / Extending my network, by simply selecting the mode I required, when I required it. After all, isn't that the beauty of Mac computers?
Alas, there is no such drop down menu or button I can press in Airport Utilty to make such a straight forward selection. Instead, from what I can see so far in Airport Utility and various forums, there is a very long and painful process that must be carried out to use the Airport to extend my WIFI network.
I refuse to believe that it can be this hard and assume that that there is some really obvious setting I can change to make this work. It certainly wouldn't surprise me if Apple left this out of the manual, as Apple are legendary for not telling you how connect to 3rd party products, as I found with Apple TV.
As I said, I have read a million threads on this topic and all I have found so far are wanna be geeks, getting lost up there own a**es with lots of technical rubbish that has nothing to do with the problem.
If there is anyone there who actually knows what they are talking about and can explain this without Pythageros Theorem, I would be most grateful.

The AirPort Express can "Join" virtually any wireless network to provide AirTunes and remote printing capability.
But, the "Extend a wireless network" function of the Express appears to be a proprietary feature that will only work with other Apple wireless routers.
As far as we know, this feature is not compatible with routers from any other manufacturers, so there is virtually no chance that it will work with the Netgear N300 router.
I refuse to believe that it can be this hard and assume that that there is some really obvious setting I can change to make this work. It certainly wouldn't surprise me if Apple left this out of the manual,
Well, you can try either the guided setup or the Manual Setup method to configure the Express to "Extend a wireless network", but you are going to get an error message that the "network cannot be extended".
If you have the time and wish to prove this to yourself.....
Open AirPort Utility - Click Manual Setup
Click the Base Station tab below the icons to name the Express, setup a device password and adjust Time Zone settings
Click the Wireless tab and adjust as follows:
Wireless Mode = Extend a wireless network
Wireless Network Name = The name of the Netgear network that you wish to extend
Enter a check mark next to "Allow wireless clients" if not already checked
Wireless Security = Wireless security setting of the Netgear network
Wireless Password = Enter the password of the Netgear network
    Confirm Password
Click Update and wait for the error message

  • Help setting up my airport express to work at a relative's house

I recently upgraded my parents' house from dial-up to broadband connection via local telecom provider (Qwest). With ethernet cable plugged into my MacBook, all is well. But when I plug ethernet cable into my Airport Express unit, I am unable to access Internet. MacBook and Airport Express unit are communicating but -- I'm guessing I need to do something so that Airport Express unit works with a different modem than the one at my residence, i.e. the one now installed at my parents' house. I can probably figure it out if pointed in the right direction. I would be grateful.

It's always a good idea to do a complete power recycle of all the network components when switching networks to allow the modem to recognize the router.
Try the following, in order, checking for Internet access after each step, until resolved:
    1. If the modem has a reset switch, use it to reset the modem. Wait at least 5-10 minutes for the modem to initialize.
    2. Remove power from the modem. If it has a backup battery, remove this as well. Wait 5-10 minutes. Replace the battery, and add power back to the modem.
    3. Perform a complete power recycle of your network components as follows:
    Modem/Router Power Recycling - Quick
o Power-off the modem, AirPort Express Base Station (AX), & computer(s); Wait at least 5 minutes.
o Power-on the modem; Wait at least 5 minutes.
o Power-on the AX; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    o Power-on the computer(s)
If this fails to get the modem to "recognize" the Internet router, then try the "Full" version.
    Modem/Router Power ReCycling - Full
o Power-off the modem, AX, & computer(s). (Wait at least 30 minutes. If possible, leave the modem off overnight.)
o Power-on the modem; Wait at least 15 minutes.
o Power-on the AX; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    o Power-on the computer(s)
    4. Contact your ISP to have them perform a "modem reset."
You may also want to take advantage of the AX's ability to save multiple configurations.
The AX can store up to five different configuration profiles. You will need to use the AirPort Admin Utility, located in Applications/Utilities to create & save these profiles.
    To create a new profile:
o Open AirPort Admin Utility, and select your AX from the list, and then, click Configure.
o Click the Profiles icon in the toolbar.
o Click Add to create a new profile; give it a name, and then, click OK.
o Set options, such as network name, passwords, Internet connection method, etc.
o When done setting the options, click Update.
    To switch profiles:
o Open the AirPort Admin Utility, and select your AX from the list, and then, click Configure.
o Click the Profiles icon in the toolbar.
o Click on the desired profile, and then, click OK to apply the new profile and restart the AX.
Just remember to switch to the desired configuration profile before removing power from the AX.

  • Can't Get Airport Express To Work With ATT's Uverse

For years, AE worked just fine with my 2Wire portal streaming music to my stereo. Went to Uverse 2 months ago, and AE quit working. I am not using an Airport base station, just the Uverse modem and I need help getting it to work.
There is nothing in this forum when I search for uverse, so I post this in hope someone can help me.
I reset AE it and it finally appeared in Airport utility with a yellow light. I click configure and when I choose to join my current network, it sets up it's own Apple network, removing it from Airport utility and changing Airport status in Network to yellow.
No matter what I do or how I try, I just can't get AE to work with the stock 2Wire modem.
Has anyone been able to get AE to work with just the 2wire router & not have to buy an airport base station.
Any help is REALLY appreciated, as I wanna hear my Christmas music, and it's turning me into a Grinch!
    Thanks!

+However, it asks for the security and all I see is WEP in the Home Network set up, I don't know if it's 40 or 128+
AT&T set this up, so only they can tell you for sure. My guess would be WEP 128 since this type of security is stronger than WEP 40.
+And it asks for a wireless password. I entered the one from the router & it did not work. Tried the Key and it did not work.+
This is the same wireless password that you would use if you were logging on to your wireless network with your computer. But, unless you first have the exact, correct security setting for your 2wire router, the password will not work.
+Has anyone out there successfully got their Airport Express to work with Uverse????+
I don't provide instructions to anyone on the forum unless I've first done it myself. I'm providing you with the same instructions that I used to help a neighbor with his 2wire Uverse setup last week. It works fine.
But, he called AT&T to ask them what security setting they used on his 2wire router. Otherwise, we would have had to try each possible setting to see if we could make it work.
AT&T also told him that his password should be 13 characters, all lower case letters with no spaces. That is what the neighbor said he used. I cannot confirm this as he did not share his password with me.
AT&T may have set up the password criteria differently on your router. You need to confirm with them on this.
+What password goes in the Base station tab, Key or Password?+
Any password you want. This is a separate password simply to be able to access the settings on the device in the future when you are using AirPort Utility. You could use your wireless network password if you want.
Please post back on your progress.

    Thanks,
This is the rear of your modem/router:
Connect a Cat5e or Cat6 cable from any of the 4 Ethernet Lan ports to the (single) socket on the Express, then go to Airport Utility (Applications>Utilities>Airport Utility) and select create a new network.
You will need to turn the wireless transmiter in the Netgear off, here is a link to the Netgear Manual in case you need to refer to it.

  • Why does AirPort Extreme stop working when I plug in a USB hard drive?

Why does Airport Extreme stop working when I plug in a USB hard drive?  The USB drive has its own power supply.  I've tried isolating the hard drive from Airport using a powered USB hub to no avail.

The USB port on the AirPort Extreme is borderline as far as its ability to supply adequate power to a hard drive. Another way of saying the same thing is that this is not a high power USB port, like you would find on a computer.
Your 2TB drive likely requires a bit more current than the USB port on the AirPort Extreme can supply. It is also possible that the drive's firmware may not support a network USB connection....only a "local" connection to a computer. Check with Seagate support on that possibility.
Try using a powered USB hub with the 2TB drive....and make sure that the drive is formatted correctly in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or FAT32....which the AirPort Extreme USB port can accept.
